Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,1Ἤγγιζεν δὲ ἑορτὴ τῶν ἀζύμων λεγομένη Πάσχα
and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.2καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς τὸ πῶς ἀνέλωσιν αὐτόν ἐφοβοῦντο γὰρ τὸν λαόν
Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.3Εἰσῆλθεν δὲ Σατανᾶς εἰς Ἰούδαν τὸν καλούμενον Ἰσκαριώτην ὄντα ἐκ τοῦ ἀριθμοῦ τῶν δώδεκα
And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.4καὶ ἀπελθὼν συνελάλησεν τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ στρατηγοῖς τὸ πῶς αὐτοῖς παραδῷ αὐτόν
They were delighted and agreed to give him money.5καὶ ἐχάρησαν καὶ συνέθεντο αὐτῷ ἀργύριον δοῦναι
He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.6καὶ ἐξωμολόγησεν καὶ ἐζήτει εὐκαιρίαν τοῦ παραδοῦναι αὐτὸν ἄτερ ὄχλου αὐτοῖς
Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.7Ἦλθεν δὲ ἡμέρα τῶν ἀζύμων [ἐν] ἔδει θύεσθαι τὸ πάσχα
Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."8καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Πέτρον καὶ Ἰωάννην εἰπών Πορευθέντες ἑτοιμάσατε ἡμῖν τὸ πάσχα ἵνα φάγωμεν
"Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked.9Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμεν
He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters,10 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰδοὺ εἰσελθόντων ὑμῶν εἰς τὴν πόλιν συναντήσει ὑμῖν ἄνθρωπος κεράμιον ὕδατος βαστάζων ἀκολουθήσατε αὐτῷ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν εἰς ἣν εἰσπορεύεται
and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?'11καὶ ἐρεῖτε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ τῆς οἰκίας Λέγει σοι Διδάσκαλος Ποῦ ἐστιν τὸ κατάλυμα ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω
He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there."12κἀκεῖνος ὑμῖν δείξει ἀνάγαιον μέγα ἐστρωμένον ἐκεῖ ἑτοιμάσατε
They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.13Ἀπελθόντες δὲ εὗρον καθὼς εἰρήκει αὐτοῖς καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα
When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.14Καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ὥρα ἀνέπεσεν καὶ οἱ ἀπόστολοι σὺν αὐτῷ
And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.15καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἐπιθυμίᾳ ἐπεθύμησα τοῦτο τὸ πάσχα φαγεῖν μεθ’ ὑμῶν πρὸ τοῦ με παθεῖν
For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God."16λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι 〈οὐκέτι〉 οὐ μὴ φάγω αὐτὸ ἕως ὅτου πληρωθῇ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ
After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you.17Καὶ δεξάμενος ποτήριον εὐχαριστήσας εἶπεν Λάβετε τοῦτο καὶ διαμερίσατε εἰς ἑαυτούς
For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."18λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν [ὅτι] οὐ μὴ πίω ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως οὗ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔλθῃ
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."19Καὶ λαβὼν ἄρτον εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων Τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν διδόμενον τοῦτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν
In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.20καὶ τὸ ποτήριον ὡσαύτως μετὰ τὸ δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον καινὴ διαθήκη ἐν τῷ αἵματί μου τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν ἐκχυννόμενον
But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.21Πλὴν ἰδοὺ χεὶρ τοῦ παραδιδόντος με μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης
The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!"22ὅτι Υἱὸς μὲν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου κατὰ τὸ ὡρισμένον πορεύεται πλὴν οὐαὶ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι’ οὗ παραδίδοται
They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.23Καὶ αὐτοὶ ἤρξαντο συζητεῖν πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς τὸ τίς ἄρα εἴη ἐξ αὐτῶν τοῦτο μέλλων πράσσειν
A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.24Ἐγένετο δὲ καὶ φιλονεικία ἐν αὐτοῖς τὸ τίς αὐτῶν δοκεῖ εἶναι μείζων
Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.25 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οἱ βασιλεῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν κυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ἐξουσιάζοντες αὐτῶν εὐεργέται καλοῦνται
But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.26ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως ἀλλ’ μείζων ἐν ὑμῖν γινέσθω ὡς νεώτερος καὶ ἡγούμενος ὡς διακονῶν
For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.27τίς γὰρ μείζων ἀνακείμενος διακονῶν οὐχὶ ἀνακείμενος ἐγὼ δὲ ἐν μέσῳ ὑμῶν εἰμι ὡς διακονῶν
You are those who have stood by me in my trials.28Ὑμεῖς δέ ἐστε οἱ διαμεμενηκότες μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐν τοῖς πειρασμοῖς μου
And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me,29κἀγὼ διατίθεμαι ὑμῖν καθὼς διέθετό μοι Πατήρ μου βασιλείαν
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.30ἵνα ἔσθητε καὶ πίνητε ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης μου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ μου καὶ καθήσεσθε ἐπὶ θρόνων τὰς δώδεκα φυλὰς κρίνοντες τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
"Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.31Σίμων Σίμων ἰδοὺ Σατανᾶς ἐξῃτήσατο ὑμᾶς τοῦ σινιάσαι ὡς τὸν σῖτον
But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."32ἐγὼ δὲ ἐδεήθην περὶ σοῦ ἵνα μὴ ἐκλίπῃ πίστις σου καὶ σύ ποτε ἐπιστρέψας στήρισον τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου
But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death."33 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Κύριε μετὰ σοῦ ἕτοιμός εἰμι καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν καὶ εἰς θάνατον πορεύεσθαι
Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me."34 δὲ εἶπεν Λέγω σοι Πέτρε οὐ φωνήσει σήμερον ἀλέκτωρ ἕως τρίς με ἀπαρνήσῃ 〈μὴ〉 εἰδέναι
Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered.35Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὅτε ἀπέστειλα ὑμᾶς ἄτερ βαλλαντίου καὶ πήρας καὶ ὑποδημάτων μή τινος ὑστερήσατε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Οὐθενός
He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.36Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἀλλὰ νῦν ἔχων βαλλάντιον ἀράτω ὁμοίως καὶ πήραν καὶ μὴ ἔχων πωλησάτω τὸ ἱμάτιον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀγορασάτω μάχαιραν
It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment."37λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι τοῦτο τὸ γεγραμμένον δεῖ τελεσθῆναι ἐν ἐμοί Τό Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη καὶ γὰρ τὸ περὶ ἐμοῦ τέλος ἔχει
The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That's enough!" he replied.38Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Κύριε ἰδοὺ μάχαιραι ὧδε δύο δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἱκανόν ἐστιν
Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.39Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐπορεύθη κατὰ τὸ ἔθος εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν ἠκολούθησαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ μαθηταί
On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."40γενόμενος δὲ ἐπὶ τοῦ τόπου εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Προσεύχεσθε μὴ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς πειρασμόν
He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,41Καὶ αὐτὸς ἀπεσπάσθη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὡσεὶ λίθου βολήν καὶ θεὶς τὰ γόνατα προσηύχετο
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."42λέγων Πάτερ εἰ βούλει παρένεγκε τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ πλὴν μὴ τὸ θέλημά μου ἀλλὰ τὸ σὸν γινέσθω
An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.43Ὤφθη δὲ αὐτῷ ἄγγελος ἀπ’ (τοῦ) οὐρανοῦ ἐνισχύων αὐτόν
And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.44καὶ γενόμενος ἐν ἀγωνίᾳ ἐκτενέστερον προσηύχετο καὶ ἐγένετο ἱδρὼς αὐτοῦ ὡσεὶ θρόμβοι αἵματος καταβαίνοντες ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν
When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.45Καὶ ἀναστὰς ἀπὸ τῆς προσευχῆς ἐλθὼν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς εὗρεν κοιμωμένους αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς λύπης
"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."46καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τί καθεύδετε ἀναστάντες προσεύχεσθε ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν
While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him,47Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ ὄχλος καὶ λεγόμενος Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα προήρχετο αὐτούς καὶ ἤγγισεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ φιλῆσαι αὐτόν
but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"48Ἰησοῦς δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰούδα φιλήματι τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδως
When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?"49Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ περὶ αὐτὸν τὸ ἐσόμενον εἶπαν Κύριε εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρῃ
And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.50καὶ ἐπάταξεν εἷς τις ἐξ αὐτῶν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως τὸν δοῦλον καὶ ἀφεῖλεν τὸ οὖς αὐτοῦ τὸ δεξιόν
But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him.51Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἐᾶτε ἕως τούτου καὶ ἁψάμενος τοῦ ὠτίου ἰάσατο αὐτόν
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?52Εἶπεν δὲ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς παραγενομένους ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ στρατηγοὺς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ πρεσβυτέρους Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων
Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns."53καθ’ ἡμέραν ὄντος μου μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οὐκ ἐξετείνατε τὰς χεῖρας ἐπ’ ἐμέ ἀλλ’ αὕτη ἐστὶν ὑμῶν ὥρα καὶ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους
Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.54Συλλαβόντες δὲ αὐτὸν ἤγαγον καὶ εἰσήγαγον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει μακρόθεν
And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.55Περιαψάντων δὲ πῦρ ἐν μέσῳ τῆς αὐλῆς καὶ συνκαθισάντων ἐκάθητο Πέτρος μέσος αὐτῶν
A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him."56ἰδοῦσα δὲ αὐτὸν παιδίσκη τις καθήμενον πρὸς τὸ φῶς καὶ ἀτενίσασα αὐτῷ εἶπεν Καὶ οὗτος σὺν αὐτῷ ἦν
But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said.57 δὲ ἠρνήσατο λέγων Οὐκ οἶδα αὐτόν γύναι
A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!"
About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean."59Καὶ διαστάσης ὡσεὶ ὥρας μιᾶς ἄλλος τις διϊσχυρίζετο λέγων Ἐπ’ ἀληθείας καὶ οὗτος μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἦν καὶ γὰρ Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν
Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.60Εἶπεν δὲ Πέτρος Ἄνθρωπε οὐκ οἶδα λέγεις καὶ παραχρῆμα ἔτι λαλοῦντος αὐτοῦ ἐφώνησεν ἀλέκτωρ
The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times."61καὶ στραφεὶς Κύριος ἐνέβλεψεν τῷ Πέτρῳ καὶ ὑπεμνήσθη Πέτρος τοῦ λόγου τοῦ Κυρίου ὡς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι Πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι σήμερον ἀπαρνήσῃ με τρίς
And he went outside and wept bitterly.62καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἔξω ἔκλαυσεν πικρῶς
The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.63Καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ συνέχοντες αὐτὸν ἐνέπαιζον αὐτῷ δέροντες
They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?"64καὶ περικαλύψαντες αὐτὸν ⧼ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὸ πρόσωπον καὶ⧽ ἐπηρώτων λέγοντες Προφήτευσον τίς ἐστιν παίσας σε
And they said many other insulting things to him.65καὶ ἕτερα πολλὰ βλασφημοῦντες ἔλεγον εἰς αὐτόν
At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.66Καὶ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡμέρα συνήχθη τὸ πρεσβυτέριον τοῦ λαοῦ ἀρχιερεῖς τε καὶ γραμματεῖς καὶ ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ συνέδριον αὐτῶν λέγοντες
"If you are the Messiah," they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me,67Εἰ σὺ εἶ Χριστός εἰπὸν ἡμῖν Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἐὰν ὑμῖν εἴπω οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε
and if I asked you, you would not answer.68ἐὰν δὲ ἐρωτήσω οὐ μὴ ἀποκριθῆτε
But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."69ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν δὲ ἔσται Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καθήμενος ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς δυνάμεως τοῦ Θεοῦ
They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You say that I am."70Εἶπαν δὲ πάντες Σὺ οὖν εἶ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἔφη Ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι
Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."71Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Τί ἔτι ἔχομεν μαρτυρίας χρείαν αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἠκούσαμεν ἀπὸ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
