Berean Study Bible A Greeting from JudeJude presents himself first as wholly devoted to Christ and under His authority. Though he belonged to Jesus’ earthly family, he grounds his identity in service to the risen Lord and in the responsibility of proclaiming His truth. Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle,… and a brother of James, James was the recognized leader of the Jerusalem church and was widely respected among Jewish Christians. Jude identifies himself through James, establishing his connection to the church without appealing to his own family relationship with Jesus. Luk 6:16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot… To those who are called, Jude writes to believers whom God has drawn to Himself through the gospel. Their place among God’s people rests on His gracious purpose rather than human status or effort. Rom 8:30 And those He predestined, He also called;… loved by God the Father, God’s fatherly love marks the recipients as His own. Their security and identity begin with His love, which was shown fully in sending His Son for their salvation. 2Th 2:16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father,… and kept in Jesus Christ: Believers are guarded through their union with Christ. In a letter warning against false teachers and moral corruption, Jude begins by affirming that Christ preserves His people for the salvation to come. Jhn 17:11-12 I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world,… Mercy, God’s mercy is His compassionate restraint toward sinners and His readiness to forgive those who turn to Him. Jude begins by asking that believers receive an increasing awareness of God’s pardon and sustaining compassion, especially as they face the corruption and deception addressed in the letter. 1Ti 1:2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy… peace, God gives His people settled confidence through reconciliation with Him. This peace remains firm amid conflict, uncertainty, and opposition, enabling the church to remain united and faithful when false teachers seek to disturb its life and doctrine. Rom 1:7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints… and love God’s love, shown supremely in the giving of His Son, is to govern the relationships of those called by Christ. Jude’s readers needed love that would strengthen fellowship, encourage faithfulness, and prevent the divisions fostered by ungodly influences. 1Jn 4:16 And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us. God is love; whoever abides in love abides in God… be multiplied to you. Jude’s greeting is a prayer that mercy, peace, and love would abound among his readers. These gifts from God would equip them to persevere in truth, resist error, and remain secure in their calling. 1Pe 1:2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father…
God’s Judgment on the UngodlyJude addresses his readers as fellow believers joined to him through Christ and the shared life of the church. 2Pe 3:1 Beloved, this is now my second letter to you.… although I made every effort to write to you about the salvation we share, He had intended to write about the salvation held in common by all who trust in Christ: forgiveness of sins, redemption, and eternal life through the gospel. Act 15:11 On the contrary, we believe it is through the grace… I felt it necessary to write and urge you Reports of dangerous influences among the believers required a direct warning rather than a general encouragement. 1Th 4:1 Finally, brothers, we ask and encourage you… to contend earnestly for the faith Christians were called to stand firmly for the true gospel against teachers whose conduct and message denied its authority. 1Ti 6:12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life… entrusted once for all to the saints. The faith is the complete apostolic message delivered to God’s people, not a doctrine open to alteration or replacement. 2Ti 1:13-14 Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching… For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed— False teachers had entered the churches quietly, presenting themselves as believers while introducing corrupt beliefs and practices. Their danger came from within the Christian community, much like the false prophets and destructive teachers warned about by Jesus and the apostles. Gal 2:4 This issue arose because some false brothers had come in… ungodly ones who were designated long ago for condemnation. Their judgment was not unforeseen; Scripture had long testified that those who reject God and lead others into sin will face His condemnation. Their presence did not overturn God’s purposes or catch Him unaware. 2Pe 2:3 In their greed, these false teachers will exploit you… They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality, Rather than receiving grace as forgiveness that leads to a changed life, they used it to excuse sexual sin and rebellion. Such teaching reflected the immoral patterns of the surrounding pagan world and treated Christian freedom as permission to continue in sin. Rom 6:1-2 What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin… and they deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. By rejecting Christ’s authority in both teaching and conduct, they denied the One they claimed to follow. Jesus is not merely a source of forgiveness but the sovereign Lord to whom all believers owe obedience. Tit 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions… Although you are fully aware of this, Jude writes to believers who already knew Israel’s history and the judgments recorded in Scripture. He calls them to remember what they had learned rather than assume past knowledge would protect them from present error. 2Pe 1:12 Therefore I will always remind you of these things… I want to remind you Remembering God’s works and judgments strengthens discernment and guards against the false teachers Jude is addressing. 2Pe 1:13 I think it is right to refresh your memory… that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, Israel’s exodus was a decisive act of divine salvation. Jude identifies Jesus as the Lord who redeemed Israel from slavery, affirming His active role in God’s saving work before His incarnation. Exo 12:51 And on that very day the LORD brought the Israelites out… He destroyed those who did not believe. The generation rescued from Egypt later refused to trust God and enter the land He promised them. Their judgment demonstrates that outward participation in God’s people and experience of His deliverance do not excuse persistent unbelief. 1Co 10:5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them,… And the angels who did not stay within their own domain Jude recalls angels who rejected the place and authority God assigned to them. Their rebellion involved leaving the order established by their Creator, commonly connected with the “sons of God” in Genesis 6:1–4 who took human women and produced the Nephilim. Gen 6:1-4 Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth… but abandoned their proper dwelling— Rather than remaining in their appointed heavenly station, these angels willfully crossed a boundary God had set. Their sin was not ignorance but deliberate defiance of His rule. 1Pe 3:19-20 in whom He also went and preached to the spirits in prison… these He has kept in eternal chains under darkness, God has confined these fallen angels in a state of judgment, limiting them until their final sentence. Their darkness reflects exclusion from God’s glory and the certainty of their punishment. 2Pe 2:4 For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned… bound for judgment on that great day. Their present confinement does not complete their judgment. They await the final day when God will judge all rebellion and permanently establish His righteous rule. Mat 25:41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me,… In like manner, Sodom and Gomorrah stand with the unbelieving Israelites and fallen angels as historical witnesses to God’s judgment on rebellion. 2Pe 2:6-7 He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah… Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, These cities of the Jordan Valley were prosperous centers whose destruction in Genesis 19 was sudden and complete. Gen 19:24-25 Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire… who indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, Their men sought to violate Lot’s angelic visitors, displaying violent sexual corruption and a rejection of God’s created order. Gen 19:4-5 Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city… are on display as an example Their ruin remains a public warning that God does not overlook persistent wickedness. 1Co 10:6 These things took place as examples to keep us from craving… of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire. The fire that consumed the cities foreshadows the everlasting judgment awaiting the ungodly. Mat 25:41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me,… Yet in the same way these dreamers Like the rebels described earlier, these false teachers lived by imagined revelations rather than God’s truth. Their claims to spiritual insight concealed rebellion, recalling those who opposed God in Israel’s history. Deu 13:1-3 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you… defile their bodies, Their conduct included sexual sin and other bodily corruption, treating physical behavior as unimportant while claiming spiritual knowledge. Such teaching contradicted God’s design for holiness. 1Co 6:18-20 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin… reject authority, They refused submission to Christ’s lordship and rejected the authority God had established through His apostles and servants. Their rebellion followed the pattern of those who challenged Moses and God’s appointed order. 2Pe 2:10 Such punishment is specially reserved for those who indulge… and slander glorious beings. In their arrogance, they spoke contemptuously of angelic and spiritual authorities they did not understand. Even holy angels do not speak rashly concerning such matters, but these teachers presumed to do so without reverence or restraint. 2Pe 2:11 Yet not even angels, though greater in strength and power… But even the archangel Michael, Michael is a chief angel entrusted with significant authority in the service of God and the protection of His people. Dan 10:13 However, the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed… when he disputed with the devil Michael confronted Satan, God’s adversary, in a matter involving Moses. Rev 12:7-9 Then a war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels… over the body of Moses, Moses died in Moab, and God buried him in an unknown place, preserving his grave from becoming an object of veneration. Deu 34:5-6 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there.… did not presume to bring a slanderous charge against him, Though Michael possessed great authority, he did not pronounce judgment against Satan on his own authority. 2Pe 2:11 Yet not even angels, though greater in strength and power… but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” Michael left judgment to the Lord, whose authority is greater than every angelic or demonic power. Zec 3:2 And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan!… These men, however, slander what they do not understand, Jude identifies the corrupt intruders within the church who reject God’s revealed truth while speaking arrogantly against it. Their opposition grows from spiritual blindness and rebellion rather than informed conviction. 2Pe 2:12 These men are like irrational animals, creatures of instinct… and like irrational animals, Driven by appetite, pride, and sensual desire, they abandon the moral understanding God has given mankind. Their conduct reflects instinct rather than submission to God’s authority. Psa 49:20 A man who has riches without understanding… they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively. The sins they pursue become the means of their ruin. Their judgment is certain, bringing the destruction reserved for those who persist in rejecting God’s truth. Gal 6:8 The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh… Woe to them! Jude announces God’s judgment on teachers whose conduct has led others away from the truth. Isa 5:20-23 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil… They have traveled the path of Cain; Like Cain, they have allowed sinful desire, hatred, and defiance of God to govern their actions. 1Jn 3:12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one… they have rushed for profit into the error of Balaam; Like Balaam, they have pursued personal gain while corrupting others and opposing God’s purposes. 2Pe 2:15 They have left the straight way and wandered off… they have perished in Korah’s rebellion. Their rejection of God’s authority follows Korah’s example and brings the same certainty of divine judgment. Num 16:31-35 As soon as Moses had finished saying all this,… These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts, The church’s love feasts were shared meals that expressed fellowship among believers and were often connected with remembrance of the Lord’s Supper. False teachers attended these gatherings while concealing their corrupt influence. Like hidden reefs beneath the water, they endangered those around them, threatening shipwreck, the unity, and the spiritual safety of the congregation. 2Pe 2:13 The harm they will suffer is the wages of their wickedness.… shamelessly feasting with you but shepherding only themselves. Rather than caring for God’s people, they used the church for personal advantage. Their open participation in fellowship concealed hearts devoted to self-interest, the opposite of faithful shepherds who protect and nourish the flock. Ezk 34:2 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel… They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; They offered promises of spiritual insight but brought no truth or nourishment. Their teaching lacked substance and stability, shifting with error rather than being grounded in God’s revealed word. 2Pe 2:17 These men are springs without water and mists… fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted. Though the season called for fruit, their lives produced nothing pleasing to God. Their barrenness revealed their spiritual death, and their uprooting points to certain judgment and removal rather than lasting life among God’s people. Mat 7:19-20 Every tree that does not bear good fruit… They are wild waves of the sea, They are like wild waves of the sea—turbulent and destructive, like the wicked whose lives are marked by unrest and disorder. These false teachers create confusion within the church and harm those influenced by them. Isa 57:20 But the wicked are like the storm-tossed sea,… foaming up their own shame; Their corrupt behavior openly displays the shame of their proud words and immoral deeds, revealing the sinful character they try to hide. Php 3:19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly,… wandering stars, “Wandering stars” depicts false teachers as unreliable guides who offer no dependable direction. Rather than leading believers toward truth, they drift from it and draw others into error. Isa 14:12 How you have fallen from heaven, O day star… for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever. Their judgment is certain and final. Having rejected God’s truth and led others astray, they face eternal separation from the light and presence of God. 2Pe 2:17 These men are springs without water and mists… Enoch, the seventh from Adam, Enoch belonged to the godly line through Seth and lived before the flood. Genesis records that he walked with God and that God took him, sparing him from death. 1Ch 1:1-3 Adam, Seth, Enosh,… also prophesied about them: Enoch warned beforehand of the ungodly people Jude describes. His prophecy was preserved in the Book of Enoch and declares God’s judgment on those who reject His authority. Gen 6:5-7 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man… “Behold, the Lord is coming The Lord’s return is certain and will bring open judgment upon evil and the completion of His righteous rule. Rev 22:12 “Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me,… with myriads of His holy ones He will come in overwhelming majesty with countless holy attendants, displaying His authority over every rebellious power. Deu 33:2 He said: “The LORD came from Sinai and dawned… to execute judgment on everyone, The Lord’s return will bring judgment upon all humanity without exception. Every person will stand before Him, and His verdict will be perfectly just. Act 17:31 For He has set a day when He will judge the world… and to convict all the ungodly Those who have resisted God will be exposed as guilty. Their rebellion will no longer be hidden or excused. Jhn 16:8 And when He comes, He will convict the world… of every ungodly act of wickedness God sees every deed, including the corrupt actions Jude’s false teachers had sought to excuse. No act of evil will escape His judgment. Rom 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven… and every harsh word spoken against Him Defiant, blasphemous, and slanderous words against God reveal the same hostility found in ungodly conduct. Human speech will also be brought into account. Mal 3:13 “Your words against Me have been harsh,” says the LORD.… by ungodly sinners.” Jude repeats the description to emphasize the settled rebellion of those under judgment. Their actions and words testify against them before the righteous Judge. 1Ti 1:9 We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous,… These men are discontented grumblers, They stirred unrest within the church, resembling Israel’s wilderness generation, who complained against the Lord despite His provision. Their dissatisfaction exposed hearts unwilling to submit to God’s rule. Num 14:27 How long will this wicked congregation grumble against Me?… following after their own lusts; Rather than obeying God, they pursued corrupt personal desires. Their conduct placed appetite and self-interest above holiness and truth. 2Pe 2:10 Such punishment is specially reserved for those who indulge… their mouths spew arrogance; Their proud speech displayed contempt for authority and disregard for God. Such boasting fostered division and revealed the rebellion within them. Psa 94:4 They pour out arrogant words; all workers of iniquity boast. they flatter others for their own advantage. They used insincere praise to gain influence, support, and personal benefit. Their manipulation stood opposed to the humility, honesty, and sacrificial service taught and modeled by Christ. 2Pe 2:3 In their greed, these false teachers will exploit you…
A Call to PersevereJude turns from exposing false teachers to encourage faithful believers, whom he regards with pastoral affection. 2Pe 3:17 Therefore, beloved, since you already know these things… remember what was foretold They were to remain steady by recalling the warnings already given about coming deception and rebellion. 2Pe 3:2 by recalling what was foretold by the holy prophets… by the apostles The apostles had been appointed by Christ and had instructed the churches concerning these dangers. Act 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching… of our Lord Jesus Christ Their teaching carried the authority of the risen Lord, whose truth stood in direct contrast to the corrupt claims of the intruders. 1Co 11:23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you:… when they said to you, Jude recalls the warnings given by the apostles, whose teaching prepared the churches for opposition and false influences within the Christian community. 2Pe 3:2 by recalling what was foretold by the holy prophets… “In the last times The last times began with Christ’s first coming and continue until His return. The gospel’s advance would be accompanied by growing rebellion against God’s truth. 2Ti 3:1 But understand this: In the last days… there will be scoffers Such people would ridicule God’s promises, reject Christ’s authority, and treat the hope of His return as meaningless. 2Pe 3:3 Most importantly, you must understand that in the last days… who will follow after their own ungodly desires.” Their unbelief would be shown in conduct shaped by sinful desires rather than obedience to God. Jude presents their presence as a fulfillment of apostolic warning, not a reason for believers to abandon the faith. 2Pe 2:10 Such punishment is specially reserved for those who indulge… These are the ones who cause divisions, Jude identifies professing believers whose conduct fractures the fellowship of the church. Their influence separates Christians from faithful teaching and undermines the unity Christ intends for His people. Tit 3:10 Reject a divisive man after a first and second admonition, who are worldly Their desires and judgments are governed by fallen human nature rather than submission to God. They pursue self-interest and corrupt the community through attitudes and behavior shaped by the values of the present age. Jas 3:15 Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly… and devoid of the Spirit. Their lack of the Holy Spirit’s presence reveals that they do not belong to Christ. Without the Spirit, they remain controlled by the flesh and cannot produce the obedience and godly character that mark genuine faith. Rom 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the flesh,… But you, beloved, Jude turns from the false teachers to the faithful believers, addressing them with pastoral affection as those loved by God and joined together in Christ. Their conduct and destiny stand in sharp contrast to those who had entered the church to corrupt it. 2Pe 3:17 Therefore, beloved, since you already know these things… by building yourselves up in your most holy faith Believers are to grow steadily in the truth handed down by Christ and His apostles. Faith is the secure foundation of Christian life, and the church is strengthened as its members hold firmly to sound doctrine and live in obedience to it. Col 2:7 rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith… and praying in the Holy Spirit, Prayer is to be directed by the Holy Spirit, who enables believers to seek God according to His will. Rather than relying on empty forms, they are to depend on the Spirit’s help as they remain faithful amid spiritual danger. Eph 6:18 Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer… keep yourselves in the love of God Believers are to remain faithful to God through obedience, prayer, and steadfast trust in His truth. God’s love is the secure setting in which His people live, and they are called to resist the false teaching and immoral conduct that threatened the church. Jhn 15:9-10 As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.… as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ Christians live in expectation of Christ’s return, when He will openly complete the salvation He has begun in His people. His final judgment will also reveal His mercy toward those who belong to Him. 1Pe 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!… to bring you eternal life. Eternal life is God’s promised gift through Jesus Christ, begun in the believer’s present relationship with God and fulfilled fully at Christ’s coming, when death and sin will have no further claim on His people. Jhn 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.… And indeed, Jude continues his instructions for responding to the spiritual danger created by false teachers within the church. The situation required discernment, firmness, and care for those affected by their influence. Rom 15:1 We who are strong ought to bear with the shortcomings… have mercy Believers were to respond with compassionate concern rather than harshness, seeking to help the vulnerable without excusing error or compromising the truth. Mat 9:13 “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call… on those who doubt; Some had been unsettled by false teaching and were wavering in faith. They needed patient instruction and restoration, not rejection, as the church sought to preserve them from further spiritual harm. Mat 14:31 Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold… save others by snatching them from the fire; Some are in immediate spiritual danger and need urgent rescue from the judgment sin brings. The image recalls a person pulled from destruction at the last moment, stressing the seriousness of false teaching and immoral conduct. Zec 3:2 And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan!… and to still others show mercy tempered with fear, Others require patient compassion, but help must be given with vigilance. Those restoring the fallen must remain aware of sin’s power and guard their own obedience to God. Rom 11:20-22 That is correct: They were broken off because of unbelief,… hating even the clothing stained by the flesh. Mercy toward sinners must never become acceptance of their sin. Even what has been marked by corrupt desires is to be rejected, reflecting the call for God’s people to remain morally clean. Zec 3:3-5 Now Joshua was dressed in filthy garments…
DoxologyGod preserves His people amid temptation, error, and opposition. Believers are called to persevere, yet their security rests ultimately in God’s power to guard them from falling away. His watchful care sustains those who belong to Him. 1Th 5:23-24 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify… and to present you unblemished Through Christ’s atoning work, believers will stand before God cleansed from sin and accepted in righteousness. The sacrificial requirement for an offering without defect anticipated Christ’s perfect sacrifice, by which He sanctifies His people for their final presentation before God. Col 1:22 But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body… in His glorious presence, The promised end of salvation is life before God Himself. His presence, once approached through the temple and its sacrifices, will be fully known when His redeemed people are brought into His unveiled glory. 2Th 1:10 on the day He comes to be glorified in His saints… with great joy— The final presentation of God’s people will be marked by complete joy. Sin, sorrow, and the threat of judgment will be gone, and the redeemed will rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s saving purpose. Psa 16:11 You have made known to me the path of life;… to the only God our Savior God alone is Savior, the source of redemption and deliverance from sin. Salvation comes from Him and is accomplished through His Son, Jesus Christ. 1Ti 2:3 This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority All honor, royal splendor, sovereign rule, and rightful power belong to God. His rule extends over every created thing and cannot be challenged or diminished. Psa 145:5 The glorious splendor of Your majesty. And I will… through Jesus Christ our Lord Jesus Christ is the Lord through whom God’s saving work is revealed and believers are brought into fellowship with Him. His resurrection and exaltation confirm His authority over all. Rom 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith… before all time, and now, and for all eternity. God’s glory and rule existed before creation, remain unchanged in the present, and will continue without end. 2Ti 1:9 He has saved us and called us to a holy calling… Amen. This affirms the truth and certainty of the praise offered to God. Amen means “so be it” or “truly.” 2Co 1:20 For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ.… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
