The Eastern Tribes Return Home

Then Joshua summoned

Joshua called a formal assembly as Israel’s appointed leader, preparing to address the tribes whose military service west of the Jordan was complete.

Jos 1:10-11 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people:…

“You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you,

All this time

From Israel’s crossing of the Jordan until the major campaigns in Canaan were completed, likely about seven years, these eastern tribes remained with their brothers in battle.

Num 32:20-22 Moses replied, “If you will do this—”…

you have not deserted your brothers,

Though Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had received land east of the Jordan, they honored their promise to fight alongside the other tribes until their inheritance was secured.

up to this very day,

Their service continued without interruption until Joshua formally released them to return home.

Jos 24:31 Israel had served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua…
Jdg 2:7 And the people served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua…

but have kept the charge given you by the LORD your God.

They obeyed the command first given through Moses to cross armed with Israel and remain until the land was subdued. Their faithfulness showed obedience to the LORD and commitment to the unity of the nation.

Deu 11:1 You shall therefore love the LORD your God…
Num 9:23 They camped at the LORD’s command, and they set out…
Num 9:19 Even when the cloud lingered over the tabernacle…

And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest

Israel’s tribes west of the Jordan had secured their inheritance and were no longer engaged in the major campaigns of conquest. Their settled condition showed that the LORD had fulfilled His promise to give them rest in the land.

Deu 3:20 until the LORD gives rest to your brothers…
Jos 21:44 And the LORD gave them rest on every side,…
1Ki 5:4 But now the LORD my God has given me rest…

as He promised them,

God’s faithfulness to the covenant promises made to the patriarchs was displayed in Israel’s possession of Canaan. The rest and land they received came from His power and purpose, not merely from military success.

1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…
Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel…
Jos 23:14 Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth…

you may return to your homes

The Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh had kept their pledge to fight alongside the other tribes until the land was secured. Having completed their duty, they were released to return to their families and possessions.

in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you

Moses had assigned these tribes territory east of the Jordan because it suited their large herds. His designation of the land was given in his role as the LORD’s servant and remained part of Israel’s inheritance.

Jos 13:8 The other half of Manasseh, along with the Reubenites…
Num 32:33 So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites…

across the Jordan.

Though separated from the other tribes by the river, the eastern tribes remained part of Israel and shared in the LORD’s covenant blessings.

Jos 1:14 Your wives, your young children, and your livestock…
Deu 4:47 They took possession of the land belonging to Sihon…
Num 32:19 Yet we will not have an inheritance with them…

But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you:

Joshua reminds the eastern tribes that their settlement east of the Jordan does not lessen their covenant obligations. Moses’ law governed Israel’s worship, conduct, justice, and life as the people chosen by God. Their security and continued fellowship with the LORD depended on faithful obedience.

Deu 5:32 So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you;…
Jos 1:7 Above all, be strong and very courageous.…
Deu 6:1 These are the commandments and statutes and ordinances…

to love the LORD your God,

Israel’s obedience was to arise from wholehearted love and loyalty to the God who delivered them and gave them the land. They were not to divide their allegiance among the gods of the surrounding nations.

Deu 6:5 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart…
Mat 22:37 Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God…
Deu 30:6 The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts…

to walk in all His ways,

Their daily conduct was to reflect God’s righteous standards in every part of life. Walking in His ways meant rejecting idolatry, injustice, and the customs of Canaan.

Deu 8:6 Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD…
Deu 5:33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God…
1Ki 2:3 And keep the charge of the LORD your God to walk in His ways…

to keep His commandments,

God’s commands were not optional instructions but the covenant requirements given through Moses. Israel was to preserve and practice them faithfully, teaching them to future generations.

Jhn 14:15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
1Jn 2:3 By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him…
Deu 6:17 You are to diligently keep the commandments of the LORD…

to hold fast to Him,

The tribes were to remain firmly devoted to the LORD despite their distance from the tabernacle and the influence of neighboring peoples. Their identity and unity rested on continued faithfulness to Him.

Deu 10:20 You are to fear the LORD your God and serve Him.…
Deu 13:4 You are to follow the LORD your God and fear Him.…
Jos 23:8 Instead, you shall hold fast to the LORD your God,…

and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

God required undivided devotion, expressed in sincere worship and obedient living. Joshua’s charge makes clear that Israel’s service to the LORD involved the whole person, not merely outward religious acts.

Deu 11:13 So if you carefully obey the commandments I am giving you…
Deu 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…
1Sa 12:24 Above all, fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully…

So Joshua blessed them

Joshua commended the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh for fulfilling their promise to fight alongside the other tribes until the land west of the Jordan was secured. His blessing recognized their faithful service and entrusted them to God’s care as they returned to their inheritance.

built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.

The large altar was intended as a visible witness of their shared worship of the Lord and their continuing place within Israel. Its size and location, however, led the western tribes to fear that a rival center of worship had been established.

The Israelites sent Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest

Phinehas carried the authority of the high-priestly family as Eleazar’s son and Aaron’s grandson. His earlier defense of God’s holiness during Israel’s sin at Peor made him a fitting leader for a mission involving suspected covenant unfaithfulness. Israel treated the report of the altar as a national concern, since rebellion by one part of the people could bring judgment upon all.

These tribes had received their inheritance east of the Jordan after pledging to help the other tribes conquer Canaan. Their construction of a large altar near the Jordan raised fears that they had established a rival place of worship or were turning from the LORD. The delegation sought to determine the facts before Israel acted against them.

They went to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh

A delegation from the western tribes crossed the Jordan to confront the eastern tribes over the altar they had built. Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh had received their inheritance east of the river because the land was well suited for their livestock. Though they had fulfilled their obligation to help conquer Canaan, their location outside the main body of Israel created concern that they might separate themselves from the worship of the LORD.

‘What is this breach of faith you have committed today against the God of Israel

The eastern tribes were suspected of violating their covenant obligation to worship the LORD alone. Israel had recently entered the Promised Land, and any departure from God’s commands endangered the peace and blessing He had given them.

1Ch 10:13 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD…
Ezr 10:2 Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an Elamite, said to Ezra:…

by turning away from the LORD

The concern was that the altar represented apostasy rather than devotion. Turning from the LORD meant rejecting His authority and opening the way for idolatry and covenant judgment.

1Sa 12:20 “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “Even though you have…”…
Deu 11:16 But be careful that you are not enticed to turn aside…

and building for yourselves an altar,

The altar’s location apart from the LORD’s tabernacle caused the western tribes to fear that a separate system of worship was being established. Such division would undermine Israel’s unity under the worship God had appointed.

that you might rebel against the LORD this day?

Their accusation treated the matter as a possible act of deliberate rebellion, not a minor misunderstanding. They urgently sought an answer because rebellion against the LORD could bring consequences upon the entire nation.

Num 14:9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not be afraid…
1Sa 12:15 But if you disobey the LORD and rebel against His command,…
Deu 9:7 Remember this, and never forget how you provoked the LORD…

Was not the sin of Peor enough for us,

At Peor, Israel joined in the worship of Baal and committed sexual immorality with foreign women, provoking the LORD’s anger. The leaders of Israel remembered how quickly compromise with idolatry had brought judgment upon the nation.

Num 25:1-5 While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began…
Deu 4:3-4 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal-peor…
Hos 9:10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness…

from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day?

The sin at Peor remained a lasting national shame, reminding Israel that rebellion against God defiles the whole community and cannot be treated lightly.

Num 19:13 Anyone who touches a human corpse and fails…
Num 19:20 But if a person who is unclean does not purify himself,…
Lev 16:30 because on this day atonement will be made…

It even brought a plague upon the congregation of the LORD.

God’s judgment fell on Israel, and twenty-four thousand died in the plague. The warning against the eastern tribes arose from fear that a new act of unfaithfulness would again bring judgment on all Israel.

Num 25:8-9 followed the Israelite into the tent…
Psa 106:28-31 They yoked themselves to Baal of Peor…
Num 16:46-49 Take your censer, place fire from the altar in it…

And now, would you turn away from the LORD?

The western tribes feared that the altar built by Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh signaled a departure from Israel’s covenant worship. Israel had already suffered when some turned from the LORD through idolatry and disobedience. Any rival altar could threaten the unity of the nation and repeat the sins that had brought judgment on earlier generations.

1Ki 11:9-10 Now the LORD grew angry with Solomon, because his heart…
2Ch 7:19-20 But if you turn away and forsake the statutes…

If you rebel today against the LORD,

Their concern was not merely about the eastern tribes’ private actions. Rebellion against God’s command endangered the whole covenant community, especially after Israel had entered the land through the LORD’s help. The tribes on the west sought to confront the matter before it became open disobedience.

Num 14:9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not be afraid…
Deu 1:26-27 But you were unwilling to go up; you rebelled…
1Sa 12:14-15 If you fear the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice,…

tomorrow He will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.

Israel’s history showed that God’s judgment could fall upon the nation because of the sin of individuals or tribes. The covenant bound the people together, and persistent rebellion by one part of Israel could bring consequences upon all.

The offer shows that the western tribes were willing to share their own inheritance so that Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh would remain fully united with Israel.

Israel’s defeat at Ai and the death of thirty-six men showed that Achan’s sin affected the nation. Though the act was private, it brought God’s displeasure upon the people until the guilty man was identified and removed.

Achan’s household and possessions were brought to the Valley of Achor, where judgment fell upon all connected with his rebellion. The warning recalls the grave cost of unfaithfulness and urges Israel to preserve covenant faithfulness as they settle the land.

Then the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh

The Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh had received their inheritance east of the Jordan under Moses. Though separated from the other tribes by the river, they remained part of Israel and shared in its covenant responsibilities.

answered the leaders of the clans of Israel:

Their reply addressed the alarm caused by the altar near the Jordan. The western tribes feared that it represented rebellion against the Lord and threatened to bring judgment on the whole nation. The eastern tribes responded to show that the altar was not for sacrifice or rival worship, but a witness to their continuing place among the people of God.

God knew the purpose of the altar, and the tribes invited all Israel to examine their conduct openly. Their intent was not hidden, and they sought to remove suspicion among their brethren.

If this was in rebellion or breach of faith against the LORD,

The accusation concerned a grave covenant violation: establishing an unauthorized altar for sacrifices apart from the altar at the tabernacle. Such rebellion would threaten Israel’s unity and obedience to God.

Num 5:6 Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts…
1Ch 5:25 But they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers,…
Lev 26:40 But if they will confess their iniquity…

The tribes declared themselves willing to receive judgment if they had acted unfaithfully. Their words showed confidence that the altar had not been built for idolatry or independent worship.

Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Ezk 24:14 I, the LORD, have spoken; the time is coming…

If we have built for ourselves an altar

The eastern tribes had erected a large altar near the Jordan, prompting fears that they intended to establish an independent center of worship apart from the tabernacle. Since the LORD had appointed one place for Israel’s sacrificial worship, such an act would have threatened the nation’s covenant unity.

to turn away from Him

Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh denied that the altar represented rebellion or abandonment of the LORD. Their words recognize that forsaking God would place them under His judgment and endanger all Israel.

Deu 29:18-19 Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you…
Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…
Deu 30:17-18 But if your heart turns away and you do not listen,…

and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it,

Sacrifices belonging to Israel’s worship were to be brought to the altar at the tabernacle, where the priests served. Offering them on this structure would have created an unauthorized rival altar.

Lev 1:3-4 If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd,…
Lev 2:1-2 “When anyone brings a grain offering to the LORD,…

or to sacrifice peace offerings on it,

Peace offerings expressed fellowship and reconciliation with the LORD and with His people. As communal meals shared by the offerer, the priests, and God, using the Jordan altar for such sacrifices would have divided the worshiping community and violated the order God had established.

Lev 3:1-5 If one’s offering is a peace offering…
Lev 7:11-15 Now this is the law of the peace offering…

But in fact we have done this for fear

Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had acted deliberately to protect their descendants’ place within Israel. Though settled east of the Jordan, they remained part of the covenant people and feared that distance might eventually be used against them.

that in the future your descendants might say to ours,

They anticipated that later generations west of the Jordan could question whether the eastern tribes truly belonged to Israel. Their concern was not immediate conflict but the preservation of unity and shared worship for their children.

Exo 12:26-27 When your children ask you, ‘What does this service mean…

‘What have you to do with the LORD,

The feared accusation would deny the eastern tribes any right to approach the LORD or participate in the worship He had appointed for Israel. The altar they built was intended to prevent such a separation, not to establish an alternate place of sacrifice.

Neh 2:20 So I answered them and said, “The God of heaven is the One…
1Sa 26:19 Now please, may my lord the king hear the words…

the God of Israel?

The LORD was the God of all twelve tribes, regardless of where they lived. The eastern tribes sought to preserve that truth by providing a visible witness that they and their descendants belonged to the same covenant community.

1Ch 29:10 Then David blessed the LORD in the sight of all…
2Sa 7:27 For You, O LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,…
1Ki 8:23 O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven…

For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you Reubenites and Gadites.

The Jordan formed the natural boundary between the tribes living in Canaan and those who had received their inheritance east of the river. Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh had settled there with Moses’ approval after pledging to help Israel conquer the land west of the Jordan. Though the river marked separate territories, it did not divide them from Israel’s covenant life or from the LORD’s gift to the nation.

Deu 3:18-20 At that time I commanded you: “The LORD your God…
Jos 1:14-15 Your wives, your young children, and your livestock…
Num 32:33 So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites…

You have no share in the LORD!’

The western tribes feared that later generations might regard the eastern tribes as outsiders, excluded from Israel’s worship at the tabernacle and from the inheritance God had given His people. Such a separation could weaken their common identity and encourage neglect of the LORD’s appointed worship.

Num 18:20 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance…
Deu 10:9 That is why Levi has no portion or inheritance…
1Sa 26:19 Now please, may my lord the king hear the words…

So your descendants could cause ours to stop fearing the LORD.

The concern centered on the lasting effect of division upon their children. If the Jordan came to be viewed as a barrier to fellowship and worship, future generations on the west might deny their eastern relatives a place among God’s people. The eastern tribes therefore sought to preserve visible testimony that they shared the same LORD, altar, covenant, and inheritance.

Jdg 2:10-13 After that whole generation had also been gathered…
Deu 13:6-10 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter,…
Deu 6:12-15 be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you…

That is why we said,

The eastern tribes explained that concern for future generations had led them to act before any division arose between them and the tribes west of the Jordan.

Jos 4:7 The waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark…

but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.

It was not intended to rival the altar at the tabernacle or establish a separate place of worship. Its purpose was memorial, guarding against any future claim that the eastern tribes had no share in the worship of the Lord.

Lev 17:8-9 Tell them that if anyone from the house of Israel…
Deu 12:5-6 Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God…

Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come,

The tribes east of the Jordan built the altar as a lasting witness that they belonged to the same covenant people as the tribes living in Canaan. Its purpose was not to establish a rival place of worship, but to preserve a visible memorial of their common allegiance to the LORD for future generations.

Gen 31:48-52 Then Laban declared, “This mound is a witness…
Deu 31:19-21 Now therefore, write down for yourselves this song…
Exo 12:26-27 When your children ask you, ‘What does this service mean…

that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’

The eastern tribes affirmed that they would bring their offerings to the LORD’s appointed sanctuary at Shiloh, where the tabernacle stood. Burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings were to be presented according to God’s law at the central altar, not at the monument they had built.

Deu 12:5-7 Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God…
Exo 20:24 You are to make for Me an altar of earth…
1Ki 8:62-64 Then the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices…

Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’

The altar would prevent later generations from treating the tribes east of the Jordan as outsiders. Though separated by the river, Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh shared the same God, covenant, priesthood, and place of worship as the rest of Israel.

1Sa 26:19 Now please, may my lord the king hear the words…

Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD

The eastern tribes firmly denied any intention to forsake God. They understood rebellion as a serious breach of the covenant that had brought judgment upon Israel in the past.

Num 1:4-16 And one man from each tribe, the head of each family,…

The eastern tribes explained that the altar was not intended for sacrifices or rebellion, but as a witness that they remained part of Israel and worshiped the Lord at His appointed altar.

The explanation removed the threat of conflict. Phinehas and the leaders recognized the eastern tribes’ faithfulness and accepted the altar as a testimony of Israel’s continued unity.

Act 15:12 The whole assembly fell silent as they listened…

Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest

Phinehas, Aaron’s grandson and Eleazar’s son, had previously acted decisively to uphold God’s holiness during Israel’s sin at Peor. As a priest and respected leader, he represented the concern of the whole congregation that covenant unfaithfulness could bring judgment upon Israel.

Num 25:7-13 On seeing this, Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron…
Num 31:6 And Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into battle,…

said to the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh,

The eastern tribes had received their inheritance east of the Jordan, creating a natural distance from the tribes in Canaan. Their altar had raised fears that they were establishing a rival center of worship and separating themselves from the LORD’s appointed sanctuary.

Jos 1:12-15 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe…
Num 32:20-22 Moses replied, “If you will do this—”…
Deu 3:12-20 So at that time we took possession of this land…

Their explanation showed that the altar was not intended for sacrifices or rebellion but as a witness that the tribes on both sides of the Jordan belonged to the same God and shared in His covenant. The peaceful resolution confirmed that the LORD had not withdrawn His favor from the nation.

Jos 3:10 He continued, “This is how you will know that the living God…
Deu 7:21 Do not be terrified by them, for the LORD your God…
Zep 3:15 The LORD has taken away your punishment…

because you have not committed this breach of faith against Him.

The tribes had not rejected the LORD or altered His commands concerning worship. Their care to preserve their connection with the rest of Israel removed the suspicion of idolatry and covenant disloyalty.

Lev 6:2 If someone sins and acts unfaithfully against the LORD…
Num 5:6 Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts…
Jos 7:1 The Israelites, however, acted unfaithfully…

Consequently, you have delivered the Israelites from the hand of the LORD.”

Had the altar been built for unauthorized worship, God’s judgment could have fallen upon the entire congregation. By making their purpose clear, the eastern tribes prevented conflict among Israel and spared the nation from the consequences of unfaithfulness.

Then Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest,

Phinehas represented the priestly authority entrusted with guarding Israel’s covenant faithfulness. As Aaron’s grandson and Eleazar’s son, he carried both spiritual and national responsibility in addressing a matter that threatened the unity of the tribes.

regarding the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of Gilead.

These tribes, settled east of the Jordan in Gilead, remained fully part of Israel despite the geographical separation. The resolution affirmed their continued share in the covenant community and removed the threat of division.

Deu 3:12-13 So at that time we took possession of this land…
Num 32:33 So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites…
Jos 13:8 The other half of Manasseh, along with the Reubenites…

The Israelites were satisfied with the report,

Phinehas and the tribal leaders confirmed that the altar built by Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh was not a rival place of worship or an act of rebellion. It stood as a witness that the eastern tribes shared in Israel’s covenant faith and worship of the LORD.

Act 15:12-13 The whole assembly fell silent as they listened…

The western tribes gave thanks to God for preserving unity among Israel and preventing a breach between the tribes.

1Ch 29:20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Bless the LORD…

Num 32:33-42 So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites…

So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness,

Together with the half-tribe of Manasseh, they had settled east of the Jordan. The altar was not intended for sacrifices but was erected as a visible sign that they remained united with the tribes west of the river. The Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness.

The altar affirmed their common confession that Yahweh alone was Israel’s God and that all the tribes belonged to Him.
