The Plot against Daniel

Now it pleased Darius

Darius the Mede assumed authority over Babylon after its fall. His decision reflects the orderly administration needed to govern the newly acquired kingdom.

Est 1:21 The king and his princes were pleased with this counsel;…
Neh 2:6 Then the king, with the queen seated beside him, asked me,…

to appoint 120 satraps

These officials served as provincial rulers, overseeing local affairs, maintaining order, and administering royal interests across the empire.

Dan 3:2 Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent word to assemble the satraps,…
Est 8:9 At once the royal scribes were summoned,…

to rule throughout the kingdom,

The extensive realm required delegated authority so that the king’s rule could be carried out in every region.

Est 1:1 This is what happened in the days of Xerxes,…

and over them three administrators,

The Medo-Persian realm governed its many provinces through layers of appointed officials. Three chief administrators supervised the provincial rulers and represented the king’s authority across the empire.

including Daniel,

Though Daniel had been taken from Judah into exile, his long record of wisdom, integrity, and faithful service brought him into the highest ranks of the new government. His position showed that God continued to preserve and honor him under foreign rulers.

to whom these satraps were accountable

The satraps governed the provinces but answered to the three administrators. Such oversight limited abuse, kept provincial affairs under review, and ensured that local rulers remained loyal to the throne.

Soon, by his extraordinary spirit,

Daniel’s wisdom, integrity, and faithfulness set him apart as a servant uniquely equipped by God.

Daniel distinguished himself among the administrators and satraps.

Though serving within the Medo-Persian government, he proved more capable and trustworthy than the other officials.

Dan 1:20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding…
Pro 22:29 Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will be stationed……

So the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

Darius recognized Daniel’s ability to oversee the empire’s affairs and intended to give him authority second only to the throne.

Dan 2:48 Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many generous gifts.…
Dan 5:29 Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel…

Thus the administrators and satraps sought a charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom,

The Medo-Persian officials resented Daniel’s prominence under Darius. Though a Jewish exile from the former Babylonian regime, Daniel had gained the king’s confidence and was being considered for greater authority. Their search reflects the rivalry and jealousy that often surrounded power in royal courts.

Luk 23:2 We found this man subverting our nation,…
Mat 26:59 Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin…
Act 24:5 We have found this man to be a pestilence,…

but they could find no charge or corruption,

Daniel’s public service gave his enemies ample opportunity to examine his conduct, yet they found no evidence of dishonesty, disloyalty, or misuse of authority. His integrity stood out in an administration where corruption could easily flourish.

Luk 23:14 and said to them, “You brought me this man…
Act 25:25 But I found he had done nothing worthy of death,…

because he was trustworthy,

Daniel fulfilled his duties faithfully and could be relied upon by the king. His enemies could not accuse him of neglecting the interests of the kingdom or acting for personal gain.

Gen 39:4-6 Joseph found favor in his sight and became his attendant.…
Luk 16:10 Whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful…

and no negligence or corruption was found in him.

Daniel’s careful work and upright character left his opponents with no legitimate accusation. Since they could not attack his conduct in government, they would seek to exploit his faithfulness to God.

1Sa 12:3-4 Here I am. Bear witness against me before the LORD…
2Ki 22:7 But they need not account for the money…
1Pe 2:22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.”

Finally these men said,

Daniel’s rivals had searched unsuccessfully for evidence of corruption or neglect in his administration. Their opposition arose from jealousy over the king’s confidence in him and from fear of his growing influence within the empire.

Psa 2:2 The kings of the earth take their stand…
Pro 1:11 If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood…”…

“We will never find any charge against this Daniel

Daniel’s public life gave them no legitimate grounds for accusation. He served the king faithfully and conducted himself with integrity, leaving his enemies unable to attack his character or official duties.

Luk 23:4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds,…

unless we find something against him concerning the law of his God.”

Knowing Daniel would not compromise his worship or obedience to the Lord, they chose to use his devotion against him. Their plan depended on creating a conflict between the king’s decree and Daniel’s duty to God.

So the administrators and satraps went together to the king

The leading officials acted in concert to undermine Daniel, whose faithful service and integrity had made him a target of jealousy. Their united approach reveals a deliberate conspiracy within the Medo-Persian administration.

All the royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers, and governors have agreed

The empire’s leading officials united in a calculated effort to remove Daniel. Their claim of complete agreement was likely deceptive, since Daniel himself was one of the highest administrators. Unable to find fault in his public conduct, they targeted his devotion to God.

that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce a decree

They appealed to the king’s authority and to the unalterable character of Medo-Persian law. By framing their plot as a matter of loyalty and public order, they drew Darius into approving a decree designed to entrap Daniel.

The penalty was intended to make disobedience fatal and unavoidable. The officials expected Daniel’s regular practice of prayer to condemn him, but God would use their scheme to display His power and vindicate His faithful servant.

Psa 22:21 Save me from the mouth of the lion; at the horns…

Therefore, O king, establish the decree and sign the document

The officials pressed Darius to make their proposal a binding royal order, concealing their intent to destroy Daniel. By securing the king’s signature, they turned a scheme of jealousy into an official matter of state.

Under Persian custom, a royal edict was treated as irrevocable once issued. This left Darius unable to withdraw the order even after he recognized the trap set for Daniel.

in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians,

The kingdom maintained a reputation for fixed laws and decrees, as also seen during the reign of Xerxes. The officials appealed to this established practice to give their proposal the force of imperial law.

Dan 8:20 The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings…

The decree’s permanence heightens the crisis: Daniel’s faithfulness to God would bring him under a law the king himself could not reverse. Yet the limitation of human law would soon reveal God’s authority over kings, courts, and death.

Therefore

After the officials persuaded the king to establish the prohibition, the plot against Daniel moved into its final stage. Their goal was to use the king’s own law to punish Daniel for his faithful worship of God.

King Darius

As ruler over the Medo-Persian realm in Babylon, Darius possessed authority to issue binding decrees. Yet his authority was limited before the sovereign purposes of God.

By signing the order, Darius gave it official force under the unalterable law of the Medes and Persians. He did not yet recognize that the decree had been crafted to entrap Daniel.

The document forbade petitions to any god or man other than the king for thirty days. It directly challenged Daniel’s continued prayer to the God of Israel and set the conflict between human law and obedience to God in motion.

Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Now when Daniel learned that the document had been signed,

Daniel knew the decree was legally binding and that continued prayer to anyone but the king would bring punishment. His enemies had designed the law to exploit his known faithfulness to God.

Est 3:12 On the thirteenth day of the first month,…
Est 8:8 Now you may write in the king’s name regarding the Jews,…
Est 8:10 Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes…

he went into his house,

Rather than hide, flee, or alter his conduct, Daniel returned to the ordinary place where he regularly prayed.

Mat 14:23 He had dismissed them, He went up on the mountain by Himself…

and three times a day he got down on his knees,

Daniel’s prayer life was ordered and deliberate. Kneeling showed humility before God, not defiance for its own sake.

Act 20:36 When Paul had said this, he knelt down with all of them…

prayed, and gave thanks to his God,

Facing a deadly threat, Daniel continued both to seek God and to thank Him. His confidence rested in God’s rule rather than in the favor of the Persian court.

Php 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer…
1Th 5:17-18 Pray without ceasing.…
Col 4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful,

just as he had done before.

The decree did not create Daniel’s faithfulness; it revealed the settled pattern of his life. His enemies could predict his actions because his devotion to God had long been consistent.

Act 17:2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue…
Luk 22:39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives…

Then these men went as a group

Daniel’s rivals acted together to protect their influence in Darius’s administration. Unable to find corruption or negligence in Daniel, they had arranged a law designed to make his loyalty to God appear as disobedience to the king.

Psa 83:5 For with one mind they plot together; they form an alliance…
Psa 2:2 The kings of the earth take their stand…
Neh 4:8 and all of them conspired to come and fight…

and found Daniel petitioning

They watched Daniel at the usual time and place of his daily prayers. Though he knew the decree had been signed, he continued openly in the pattern of worship he had maintained throughout his life.

Act 9:11 “Get up!” the Lord told him. “Go to the house of Judas…
Dan 9:3 So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek Him…

and imploring his God.

Daniel brought his requests before the God of Israel rather than yielding to a command that placed the king above God. His conduct exposed the malicious purpose behind the decree and set in motion the events that would reveal God’s power before Darius and the empire.

2Ch 6:19 Yet regard the prayer and plea of Your servant, O LORD my God,…
Dan 2:18 urging them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven…

So they approached the king and asked about his royal decree:

Daniel’s rivals acted with calculated malice, using the decree they had persuaded Darius to issue in order to destroy the man the king intended to elevate. Their appeal forced the king to confront the consequences of his own decision.

Est 3:12 On the thirteenth day of the first month,…
Est 8:9 At once the royal scribes were summoned,…

“Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days any man who petitions any god or man except you, O king,

The order prohibited prayer or petitions to any other authority, placing the king at the center of public loyalty for a limited time. Daniel’s enemies knew that his regular devotion to the God of Israel would not change.

1Ki 8:38-39 then may whatever prayer or petition Your people Israel make…
Psa 65:2 O You who listen to prayer, all people will come to You.
Mat 4:10 “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written:…

will be thrown into the den of lions?”

The lions’ den was a feared form of execution and a display of royal power. By invoking its penalty, the conspirators sought to make Daniel’s death appear to be a necessary enforcement of the law rather than the result of personal hatred.

Psa 22:21 Save me from the mouth of the lion; at the horns…
Heb 11:33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice,…
2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,…

The king replied, “According to the law of the Medes and Persians the order stands, and it cannot be repealed.”

Darius confirmed the decree’s binding force. Though he would soon seek Daniel’s deliverance, he could not revoke an order issued under the established law of his realm. Human authority and legal custom could not alter Daniel’s danger, but neither could they prevent God from preserving him.

Est 1:19 So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree,…
Est 8:8 Now you may write in the king’s name regarding the Jews,…
Est 8:10 Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes…

Then they told the king,

The officials pressed their accusation before Darius after discovering Daniel praying openly, as they expected. Their report was intended to force the king to enforce the decree they had persuaded him to sign.

Est 3:8 Then Haman informed King Xerxes, “There is a certain people…
Dan 3:8 At this time some astrologers came forward…

“Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah,

They identified Daniel by his foreign origin to diminish his standing and portray him as an outsider who did not deserve favor in the Persian court. Though taken from Judah during the Babylonian exile, Daniel had risen to prominence through God-given wisdom and faithful service.

Dan 2:25 Arioch hastily brought Daniel before the king…
Dan 1:6 Among these young men were some from Judah: Daniel…

shows no regard for you, O king,

Their charge appealed to Darius’s authority by presenting Daniel’s obedience to God as personal disrespect toward the king. Daniel was not acting in rebellion against civil authority; he refused only a command that forbade worship and prayer to God.

Dan 3:12 But there are some Jews you have appointed…
Dan 3:14 And Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Shadrach, Meshach…

or for the decree that you have signed.

The officials relied on the binding character of Medo-Persian law, knowing that the king could not easily withdraw the decree even after recognizing their scheme.

Est 8:8 Now you may write in the king’s name regarding the Jews,…
Est 1:19 So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree,…

He still makes his petition three times a day.”

Daniel continued his established practice of prayer without concealment or compromise. His faithfulness brought him into conflict with the decree, not because he sought confrontation, but because devotion to God governed his life.

Psa 55:17 Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress,…
Psa 119:164 Seven times a day I praise You for Your righteous judgments.

As soon as the king heard this,

Darius immediately recognized that Daniel had been trapped by the officials who had promoted the decree. Their accusation exposed the consequences of a law the king had approved without considering their purpose.

2Ki 19:1 On hearing this report, King Hezekiah tore his clothes…
1Ki 21:27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes,…
Jhn 19:8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid,

he was deeply distressed

Darius valued Daniel as a faithful and capable servant. He understood that Daniel’s offense was not rebellion against the king but obedience to his God, yet the law demanded punishment.

Mrk 6:26 The king was consumed with sorrow, but because of his oaths…
Mat 14:9 The king was grieved, but because of his oaths…
2Ki 6:30 When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore…

and set his mind on delivering Daniel,

Though Persian law treated royal decrees as irrevocable, Darius sought every possible means to spare Daniel. His concern reveals both Daniel’s standing in the kingdom and the king’s regret over the decree.

Jhn 19:12 From then on, Pilate tried to release Him,…
Luk 23:20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again,
Luk 23:16 Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”

and he labored until sundown to rescue him.

Darius continued searching for a lawful way to save Daniel until the day ended and the sentence had to be carried out. Human authority could not overturn the decree, leaving Daniel’s deliverance in God’s hands.

Luk 23:22-23 A third time he said to them, “What evil has this man done?…
Jhn 19:15-16 At this, they shouted, “Away with Him! Away with Him!”…
Mrk 15:14-15 “Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?”…

Then the men approached the king together

The officials acted in deliberate unity, using their combined influence to press the charge against Daniel. Their organized opposition stands against Daniel’s individual faithfulness to God.

Dan 3:8-12 At this time some astrologers came forward…
Est 3:8-9 Then Haman informed King Xerxes, “There is a certain people…

and said to him, “Remember, O king,

They appealed to Darius’s responsibility to uphold his own authority, reminding him that his decree had been publicly established.

1Ki 1:11-13 Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon,…
Est 6:1-3 That night sleep escaped the king; so he ordered…

that by the law of the Medes and Persians

Medo-Persian law was regarded as binding once issued, even upon the king. The conspirators used this legal custom to prevent Darius from protecting Daniel.

Est 1:19 So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree,…
Est 8:8 Now you may write in the king’s name regarding the Jews,…

no decree or ordinance established by the king can be changed.”

Their demand forced Darius to confront the consequences of a law he had been persuaded to sign. Human schemes and royal decrees could not overturn God’s purpose for Daniel.

Est 8:10 Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes…
Ecc 8:4 For the king’s word is supreme, and who can say…

So the king gave the order,

Darius was bound by the law he had approved, though he desired to spare Daniel. The unalterable decrees of the Medes and Persians exposed the limits of earthly authority and set the stage for God’s greater rule.

Est 7:9 Then Harbonah, one of the eunuchs attending the king…
Dan 3:19 At this, Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage, …

and they brought Daniel

Daniel’s position and long record of faithful service did not protect him from the jealousy of his rivals. His offense was not disloyalty to the king but steadfast obedience to God.

Dan 5:13 So Daniel was brought before the king, who asked him,…
Act 6:12 So they stirred up the people, elders, and scribes…

and threw him into the den of lions.

The den was intended as an execution site, leaving Daniel without any human means of escape. His enemies expected the lions to end both his life and his influence.

Jer 38:6 So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the cistern…
Heb 11:33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice,…
2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,…

The king said to Daniel,

Darius’s words reveal both distress and respect. He had observed Daniel’s consistent devotion and recognized that Daniel’s God alone could save him.

Dan 3:14 And Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Shadrach, Meshach…
Est 7:5 Then King Xerxes spoke up and asked Queen Esther,…

“May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!”

Daniel’s continual service to God was evident even to a pagan ruler. Darius could offer no legal remedy, but he entrusted Daniel’s fate to the God Daniel faithfully served.

Dan 3:17 If the God whom we serve exists, then He is able to deliver…
Act 27:23 For just last night an angel of the God to whom I belong…
Psa 34:7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him,…

A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den,

The stone closed Daniel into what appeared to be certain death. Such secured entrances were used for tombs, pits, and confined enclosures, leaving no practical means of escape. The scene also anticipates the sealed tomb of Christ, where human measures could not prevent God’s deliverance.

Mat 27:60 and placed it in his own new tomb…
Mrk 15:46 So Joseph bought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus,…
Jos 10:18 So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth…

and the king sealed it with his own signet ring

Darius personally marked the stone with his royal seal, making any attempt to open it an offense against the king’s authority. His action showed both the seriousness of the decree and his concern for Daniel.

Est 8:8 Now you may write in the king’s name regarding the Jews,…
Est 3:10 So the king removed the signet ring from his finger…
Jer 32:10 I signed and sealed the deed, called in witnesses,…

and with the rings of his nobles,

The officials added their seals, binding the ruling class to the decision and preventing anyone from altering the arrangement without their knowledge.

Est 8:2 The king removed the signet ring he had recovered from Haman…
Gen 41:42 Then Pharaoh removed the signet ring from his finger,…

so that nothing concerning Daniel could be changed.

The conspirators intended Daniel’s fate to be final under the laws of the empire. Yet the sealed den only made God’s intervention unmistakable: Daniel was preserved by divine power, not by human rescue.

Est 1:19 So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree,…
Dan 4:35 All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing…
1Sa 15:29 Moreover, the Glory of Israel does not lie…

Then the king went to his palace

Darius returned to his royal residence after Daniel was sealed in the lions’ den. Though he held great authority, he could not revoke the law he had approved. His palace, normally a place of comfort and power, became a place of grief and helplessness.

1Ki 21:4 So Ahab went to his palace, sullen and angry…
Est 7:7 In his fury, the king arose from drinking his wine…

and spent the night fasting.

Darius denied himself the usual privileges of a king because of his concern for Daniel. His fasting showed distress and a sincere desire that Daniel’s God might preserve him.

No entertainment was brought before him,

Psa 77:4 You have kept my eyes from closing; I am too troubled…

At the first light of dawn,

Darius rose as soon as morning came, unable to put Daniel’s fate out of mind. Having been trapped by the decree he approved, he hoped Daniel’s God had preserved him.

the king got up

Though ruler of the empire, Darius personally went to learn what had happened. His concern reveals the regard he had developed for Daniel, whose integrity and service had earned the king’s trust.

Est 7:7 In his fury, the king arose from drinking his wine…

The king’s haste departed from normal royal ceremony and displayed his anxiety. He knew that humanly speaking Daniel had been given over to certain death.

When he reached the den,

King Darius came personally at daybreak to the place where Daniel had been sealed inside the lions’ pit. His presence shows that he had spent the night troubled by the consequence of the law he had been persuaded to enforce.

The king’s distress reveals his concern for Daniel and his recognition that the punishment had been unjustly driven by Daniel’s enemies.

Psa 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried…
Jon 2:2 “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me.”…
Psa 120:1 A song of ascents. In my distress I cried to the LORD,…

Darius identified Daniel by his faithful service to the true God, whose power stood above the gods and decrees of men.

Heb 9:14 how much more will the blood of Christ,…
1Th 1:9 For they themselves report what kind of welcome you gave us,…
Act 16:17 This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting,…

has your God, whom you serve continually,

Daniel’s steadfast devotion was known even in the royal court. His life had consistently testified that his loyalty to God governed every circumstance.

Dan 3:17 If the God whom we serve exists, then He is able to deliver…
Jos 24:15 But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD,…
1Sa 12:24 Above all, fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully…

been able to deliver you from the lions?”

Darius hoped that Daniel’s God had preserved him, though he did not yet know the outcome. The question sets the scene for God’s direct vindication of His faithful servant.

1Sa 17:37 David added, “The LORD, who delivered me from the claws…
2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,…
Heb 11:33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice,…

Then Daniel replied,

Daniel had spent the night in the lions’ den because he would not cease praying to God. His answer confirmed that God had preserved him, showing that the lions had not overcome the servant whom God protected.

Dan 2:27 Daniel answered the king, “No wise man, enchanter, …
Dan 5:17 In response, Daniel said to the king, “You may keep…
Mat 10:19-20 But when they hand you over, do not worry…

“O king,

Daniel spoke respectfully to Darius even though the king’s decree had led to his punishment. He remained loyal to God without treating the king with contempt.

Dan 2:4 Then the astrologers answered the king in Aramaic,…
Dan 5:10 Hearing the outcry of the king and his nobles,…
Est 7:3 If I have found favor in your sight, O king,…

may you live forever!

The customary royal greeting showed Daniel’s lack of bitterness toward Darius. Though earthly rulers may act unjustly, Daniel trusted God to judge rightly and to rule over every kingdom.

Neh 2:3 “May the king live forever! Why should I not be sad…”…
1Ki 1:31 Bathsheba bowed facedown in homage to the king…
1Sa 10:24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the one…

My God sent His angel

Daniel credits his deliverance directly to the God he had faithfully served. God intervened by sending an angel, demonstrating His authority over the circumstances arranged for Daniel’s death.

Dan 3:28 Nebuchadnezzar declared, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach,…
Act 12:11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know for sure…
Exo 23:20 Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you…

and shut the mouths of the lions.

The lions, kept as instruments of royal execution, were restrained by God’s power. Daniel’s preservation parallels the deliverance of his friends from the furnace: the king’s sentence could not overcome God’s will.

Heb 11:33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice,…
2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,…
Psa 22:21 Save me from the mouth of the lion; at the horns…

They have not hurt me,

Daniel emerged from the den unharmed after a night that should have ended in death. His survival publicly exposed the failure of the accusations brought against him.

Gen 31:7 And although he has cheated me and changed my wages…
Act 18:10 For I am with you and no one will lay a hand on you,…
Psa 121:7 The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve…

for I was found innocent in His sight,

God’s deliverance confirmed Daniel’s blameless conduct before Him. Daniel had violated no command of God by continuing to pray, and the Lord judged him differently from the officials who had plotted against him.

Psa 17:3 You have tried my heart; You have visited me in the night.…
2Ki 20:3 “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked…”…
Psa 18:20 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness…

and I have done no wrong against you, O king.”

Daniel also maintained that he had not acted disloyally toward Darius. He respected the king and his office, while refusing to obey a decree that forbade worship of God.

1Sa 24:11 See, my father, look at the corner of your robe…
1Sa 26:18 And he continued, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant?…
Act 25:8 “I have committed no offense against the law of the Jews…”…

The king was overjoyed

Darius’s relief was immediate and profound. Though bound by his own decree, he had hoped Daniel’s God would preserve the faithful official he valued.

Est 8:15-17 Mordecai went out from the presence of the king…
Psa 126:2-3 Then our mouths were filled with laughter…
Luk 15:24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again!…

and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den,

The king acted at once to remove Daniel from the place intended for his execution. Daniel’s rescue showed that the sentence imposed by men had not overcome God’s purpose.

Jer 38:13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him…
Psa 40:2 He lifted me up from the pit of despair,…
1Sa 2:8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy…

and when Daniel was lifted out of the den,

Daniel emerged publicly from the den, allowing those present to witness the result of God’s protection.

Psa 71:20 Though You have shown me many troubles and misfortunes,…

no wounds whatsoever were found on him,

The lions had inflicted no injury. Daniel’s complete safety confirmed that his deliverance was miraculous, not accidental.

because he had trusted in his God.

Daniel had remained faithful in prayer despite the decree and its consequences. God honored that trust by preserving him and vindicating his innocence.

At the command of the king,

Darius acted with the full authority of his office after recognizing that Daniel had been delivered by God and that the charge against him had been malicious.

Est 7:9-10 Then Harbonah, one of the eunuchs attending the king…

the men who had falsely accused Daniel

The officials who had engineered Daniel’s condemnation were exposed as enemies of both Daniel and the king’s administration. Their plot had relied on the king’s decree while seeking Daniel’s death.

Darius Honors God

Then King Darius wrote

Following Daniel’s deliverance from the lions’ den, Darius publicly acknowledged the God whom Daniel served. As ruler over Babylon after its conquest by the Medes and Persians, he used his authority to announce the significance of Daniel’s preservation.

Dan 4:1 King Nebuchadnezzar, To the people of every nation…
Est 8:10 Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes…
Est 1:22 He sent letters to all the provinces of the kingdom,…

to the people of every nation and language throughout the land:

His kingdom included many peoples brought under Medo-Persian rule. The decree extended throughout his realm, making Daniel’s deliverance and the power of Daniel’s God known beyond the royal court.

Dan 3:29 Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language…
Est 8:9 At once the royal scribes were summoned,…
Dan 3:4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “O people of every nation…

“May your prosperity abound.

Darius opened with the customary royal greeting of peace and well-being. In light of Daniel’s deliverance, the greeting introduced a proclamation that recognized God’s authority over the king and his empire.

1Ki 2:3 And keep the charge of the LORD your God to walk in His ways…
Deu 29:9 So keep and follow the words of this covenant,…
3Jn 1:2 Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper…

I hereby decree that in every part of my kingdom,

Darius issued an official command throughout the Medo-Persian Empire, whose territories encompassed many nations and peoples. Royal decrees carried the full authority of the king and were expected to be obeyed.

Est 8:9 At once the royal scribes were summoned,…
Est 1:22 He sent letters to all the provinces of the kingdom,…
Dan 3:29 Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language…

men are to tremble in fear before the God of Daniel:

Daniel’s deliverance from the lions’ den had demonstrated that the God Daniel served possessed power beyond that of any earthly ruler or pagan god. Darius called his subjects to recognize Him with reverence and awe.

Psa 96:9 Worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness;…
Psa 2:11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
Jer 10:7 Who would not fear You, O King of nations? This is Your due.…

For He is the living God,

Unlike the idols of Babylon and Persia, God is not fashioned by human hands or unable to act. He sees, speaks, judges, and intervenes in the affairs of men.

Jer 10:10 But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God…
Psa 42:2 My soul thirsts for God, the living God.…
Jos 3:10 He continued, “This is how you will know that the living God…

and He endures forever;

Darius’s reign, like every human kingdom, would pass away, but God remains unchanged and eternal.

Psa 102:27 But You remain the same, and Your years will never end.
Psa 90:2 Before the mountains were born or You brought forth…
Deu 33:27 The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath…

His kingdom will never be destroyed,

God’s rule cannot be overthrown by military power, political change, or death. His kingdom stands above every empire.

Dan 2:44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven…
Luk 1:33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever.…
Heb 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom,…

and His dominion will never end.

God’s authority extends over all nations and generations, and His reign continues without limit.

Dan 7:14 And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship…
Psa 145:13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion…
Rev 11:15 The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord…

He delivers and rescues;

God proved Himself the protector of those who remain faithful to Him. Daniel’s preservation showed that no earthly power, including the authority of a Persian king, could overcome God’s purpose.

Psa 91:14-15 Because he loves Me, I will deliver him;…
Psa 34:17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears;…
Psa 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.…

He performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth,

The lions’ den was not an isolated act of providence but a public display of God’s rule over all creation. Darius recognized that Daniel’s God alone had power beyond human laws, rulers, and natural danger.

Act 2:19 I will show wonders in the heavens above…
Jol 2:30 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth,…
Psa 135:6-9 The LORD does all that pleases Him in the heavens…

for He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.”

Daniel emerged unharmed after a night in the den because God sent His angel to shut the lions’ mouths. The miracle vindicated Daniel’s innocence and led the king to proclaim the greatness of the living God throughout his kingdom.

2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,…
Psa 22:21 Save me from the mouth of the lion; at the horns…
Heb 11:33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice,…

So Daniel prospered

Daniel continued to flourish in position and influence because God preserved him through exile, court intrigues, and changing empires. His prosperity included honor, usefulness in government, and an enduring testimony of faithfulness.

Dan 2:48 Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many generous gifts.…
Gen 39:2-3 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man…
Psa 1:3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,…

during the reign of Darius

Under Darius the Mede, Daniel remained a leading official after Babylon’s fall. The transition of power did not diminish God’s purpose for him, but placed him in a new administration where his integrity became widely known.

Dan 5:31 and Darius the Mede received the kingdom…
Dan 9:1 In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes,…
Hag 1:1 In the second year of the reign of Darius…

and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Daniel’s service continued into the reign of Cyrus, whose rule brought the Persian Empire to prominence and opened the way for the Jewish return to Jerusalem. Daniel lived to see God’s judgment on Babylon and the beginning of Israel’s restoration.

Ezr 1:1-4 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,…
2Ch 36:22-23 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,…
