Then the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pilate.1Καὶ ἀναστὰν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Πιλᾶτον
And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”2ἤρξαντο δὲ κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Τοῦτον εὕραμεν διαστρέφοντα τὸ ἔθνος ἡμῶν καὶ κωλύοντα φόρους Καίσαρι διδόναι καὶ λέγοντα ἑαυτὸν Χριστὸν βασιλέα εἶναι
Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”3 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν λέγων Σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ ἔφη Σὺ λέγεις
So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no fault in this Man.”4 δὲ Πιλᾶτος εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ὄχλους Οὐδὲν εὑρίσκω αἴτιον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ
But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.”5Οἱ δὲ ἐπίσχυον λέγοντες ὅτι Ἀνασείει τὸν λαὸν διδάσκων καθ’ ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἕως ὧδε
When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean.6Πιλᾶτος δὲ ἀκούσας ἐπηρώτησεν εἰ ἄνθρωπος Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν
And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.7καὶ ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας Ἡρῴδου ἐστὶν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς Ἡρῴδην ὄντα καὶ αὐτὸν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις
Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him.8 δὲ Ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐχάρη λίαν ἦν γὰρ ἐξ ἱκανῶν χρόνων θέλων ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ ἀκούειν περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤλπιζέν τι σημεῖον ἰδεῖν ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ γινόμενον
Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing.9ἐπηρώτα δὲ αὐτὸν ἐν λόγοις ἱκανοῖς αὐτὸς δὲ οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ
And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him.10Εἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς εὐτόνως κατηγοροῦντες αὐτοῦ
Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.11ἐξουθενήσας δὲ αὐτὸν ‹καὶ› Ἡρῴδης σὺν τοῖς στρατεύμασιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπαίξας περιβαλὼν ἐσθῆτα λαμπρὰν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν τῷ Πιλάτῳ
That very day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.12Ἐγένοντο δὲ φίλοι τε Ἡρῴδης καὶ Πιλᾶτος ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ μετ’ ἀλλήλων προϋπῆρχον γὰρ ἐν ἔχθρᾳ ὄντες πρὸς αὑτούς
Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,13Πιλᾶτος δὲ συνκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τὸν λαὸν
said to them, “You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him;14εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Προσηνέγκατέ μοι τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ἀνακρίνας οὐθὲν εὗρον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ αἴτιον ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατ’ αὐτοῦ
no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him.15ἀλλ’ οὐδὲ Ἡρῴδης ἀνέπεμψεν γὰρ αὐτὸν πρὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ ἰδοὺ οὐδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου ἐστὶν πεπραγμένον αὐτῷ
I will therefore chastise Him and release Him16παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω
(for it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast).17⧼Ἀνάγκην δὲ εἴχεν ἀπολύειν αὐτοῖς κατὰ ἑορτὴν ἕνα⧽
And they all cried out at once, saying, “Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas”—18Ἀνέκραγον δὲ παμπληθεὶ* λέγοντες Αἶρε τοῦτον ἀπόλυσον δὲ ἡμῖν τὸν Βαραββᾶν
who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder.19ὅστις ἦν διὰ στάσιν τινὰ γενομένην ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ φόνον βληθεὶς ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ
Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them.20Πάλιν δὲ Πιλᾶτος προσεφώνησεν αὐτοῖς θέλων ἀπολῦσαι τὸν Ἰησοῦν
But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”21οἱ δὲ ἐπεφώνουν λέγοντες Σταύρου σταύρου αὐτόν
Then he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”22 δὲ τρίτον εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν οὗτος οὐδὲν αἴτιον θανάτου εὗρον ἐν αὐτῷ παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω
But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed.23Οἱ δὲ ἐπέκειντο φωναῖς μεγάλαις αἰτούμενοι αὐτὸν σταυρωθῆναι καὶ κατίσχυον αἱ φωναὶ αὐτῶν ⧼καὶ τῶν ἀρχιερέων⧽
So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested.24καὶ Πιλᾶτος ἐπέκρινεν γενέσθαι τὸ αἴτημα αὐτῶν
And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.25ἀπέλυσεν δὲ τὸν διὰ στάσιν καὶ φόνον βεβλημένον εἰς φυλακὴν ὃν ᾐτοῦντο τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν παρέδωκεν τῷ θελήματι αὐτῶν
Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.26Καὶ ὡς ἀπήγαγον αὐτόν ἐπιλαβόμενοι Σίμωνά τινα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπ’ ἀγροῦ ἐπέθηκαν αὐτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν φέρειν ὄπισθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him.27Ἠκολούθει δὲ αὐτῷ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ γυναικῶν αἳ ἐκόπτοντο καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν
But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.28στραφεὶς δὲ πρὸς αὐτὰς ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Θυγατέρες Ἰερουσαλήμ μὴ κλαίετε ἐπ’ ἐμέ πλὴν ἐφ’ ἑαυτὰς κλαίετε καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν
For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’29ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἔρχονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς ἐροῦσιν Μακάριαι αἱ στεῖραι καὶ αἱ κοιλίαι αἳ οὐκ ἐγέννησαν καὶ μαστοὶ οἳ οὐκ ἔθρεψαν
Then they will begin ‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’30τότε Ἄρξονται λέγειν τοῖς ὄρεσιν Πέσετε* ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς Καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς Καλύψατε ἡμᾶς
For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”31Ὅτι εἰ ἐν ‹τῷ› ὑγρῷ ξύλῳ ταῦτα ποιοῦσιν ἐν τῷ ξηρῷ τί γένηται
There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death.32Ἤγοντο δὲ καὶ ἕτεροι κακοῦργοι δύο σὺν αὐτῷ ἀναιρεθῆναι
And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.33Καὶ ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον Κρανίον ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς κακούργους ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὃν δὲ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots.34 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔλεγεν Πάτερ ἄφες αὐτοῖς οὐ γὰρ οἴδασιν τί ποιοῦσιν διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἔβαλον κλήρους
And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”35Καὶ εἱστήκει λαὸς θεωρῶν ἐξεμυκτήριζον δὲ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες λέγοντες Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν σωσάτω ἑαυτόν εἰ οὗτός ἐστιν Χριστὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐκλεκτός
The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine,36Ἐνέπαιξαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται προσερχόμενοι ὄξος προσφέροντες αὐτῷ
and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”37καὶ λέγοντες Εἰ σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων σῶσον σεαυτόν
And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.38Ἦν δὲ καὶ ἐπιγραφὴ ἐπ’ αὐτῷ Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ ΟΥΤΟΣ* {γράμμασιν Ἑλληνικοῖς καὶ Ρωμαϊκοῖς καὶ Ἑβραϊκοῖς}
Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”39Εἷς δὲ τῶν κρεμασθέντων κακούργων ἐβλασφήμει αὐτόν ‹λέγων› Οὐχὶ σὺ εἶ Χριστός σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς
But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?40Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ἕτερος ἐπιτιμῶν αὐτῷ ἔφη Οὐδὲ φοβῇ σὺ τὸν Θεόν ὅτι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ κρίματι εἶ
And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.”41καὶ ἡμεῖς μὲν δικαίως ἄξια γὰρ ὧν ἐπράξαμεν ἀπολαμβάνομεν οὗτος δὲ οὐδὲν ἄτοπον ἔπραξεν
Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”42καὶ ἔλεγεν Ἰησοῦ μνήσθητί μου ὅταν ἔλθῃς εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν σου
And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”43Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀμήν σοι λέγω σήμερον μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ Παραδείσῳ
Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.44Καὶ ἦν ἤδη ὡσεὶ ὥρα ἕκτη καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ’ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.45τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλιπόντος ἐσχίσθη δὲ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ μέσον
And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last.46Καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Πάτερ εἰς χεῖράς σου παρατίθεμαι τὸ πνεῦμά μου τοῦτο δὲ εἰπὼν ἐξέπνευσεν
So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”47Ἰδὼν δὲ ἑκατοντάρχης τὸ γενόμενον ἐδόξαζεν τὸν Θεὸν λέγων Ὄντως ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος ἦν
And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned.48καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαραγενόμενοι ὄχλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην θεωρήσαντες τὰ γενόμενα τύπτοντες τὰ στήθη ὑπέστρεφον
But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.49εἱστήκεισαν δὲ πάντες οἱ γνωστοὶ αὐτῷ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν καὶ γυναῖκες αἱ συνακολουθοῦσαι αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁρῶσαι ταῦτα
Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man.50Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι Ἰωσὴφ βουλευτὴς ὑπάρχων [καὶ] ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος
He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God.51οὗτος οὐκ ἦν συνκατατεθειμένος τῇ βουλῇ καὶ τῇ πράξει αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας πόλεως τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὃς προσεδέχετο τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.52οὗτος προσελθὼν τῷ Πιλάτῳ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before.53καὶ καθελὼν ἐνετύλιξεν αὐτὸ σινδόνι καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸν ἐν μνήματι λαξευτῷ οὗ οὐκ ἦν οὐδεὶς οὔπω κείμενος
That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.54καὶ ἡμέρα ἦν Παρασκευῆς καὶ σάββατον ἐπέφωσκεν
And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid.55Κατακολουθήσασαι δὲ αἱ γυναῖκες αἵτινες ἦσαν συνεληλυθυῖαι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας αὐτῷ ἐθεάσαντο τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ ὡς ἐτέθη τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ
Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.56ὑποστρέψασαι δὲ ἡτοίμασαν ἀρώματα καὶ μύρα Καὶ τὸ μὲν σάββατον ἡσύχασαν κατὰ τὴν ἐντολήν
