Exodus 35
Berean Study Bible

The Sabbath

Then Moses assembled the whole congregation of Israel

After receiving God’s instructions concerning the tabernacle, Moses gathered the entire nation to hear them. Israel’s worship and obedience were matters for the whole covenant community, not merely its leaders. Having been delivered from Egypt and formed into a people at Sinai, they were to order their life according to the Lord’s commands.

Deu 5:1 Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them:…
Deu 31:12 Assemble the people—men, women, children…

and said to them,

Moses spoke as God’s appointed servant, faithfully delivering what he had received. The people were responsible to hear and obey the instructions given through him.

Exo 24:3 When Moses came and told the people all the words…
Deu 31:1 When Moses had finished speaking these words to all Israel,

“These are the things that the LORD has commanded you to do:

The work of building the tabernacle, observing the Sabbath, and providing its materials began with God’s command. Israel was not free to design its worship according to preference; the Lord Himself established how He would dwell among His people and be served by them.

Deu 5:32 So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you;…
Deu 8:1 You must carefully follow every commandment…

For six days work may be done,

Israel was given six days for ordinary labor, following the pattern God established in creation. Work was part of life in the camp and in the land, providing for households and sustaining the nation.

Exo 20:9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
Deu 5:13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
Exo 23:12 For six days you are to do your work, but on the seventh day…

but the seventh day shall be your holy day,

The seventh day belonged uniquely to the LORD. Its observance marked Israel as His covenant people and distinguished their weekly life from that of the surrounding nations.

Deu 5:12 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy,…
Ezk 20:20 Keep My Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign…

a Sabbath of complete rest to the LORD.

All ordinary labor ceased so that the people could devote the day to worship, rest, and remembrance of God’s provision. Their rest acknowledged that the nation depended on the LORD rather than solely on its own labor.

Lev 23:32 It will be a Sabbath of complete rest for you…
Exo 16:23 He told them, “This is what the LORD has said:…
Lev 16:31 It is a Sabbath of complete rest for you,…

Whoever does any work on that day must be put to death.

Deliberate violation of the Sabbath was rebellion against the covenant God had made with Israel. The penalty showed that the holiness of the LORD and the commands governing His people were not to be treated lightly.

Exo 31:14-15 Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy. Anyone who profanes it…
Num 15:35-36 And the LORD said to Moses, “The man must surely be put…

Do not light a fire

Sabbath rest extended to ordinary household labor, including kindling fires for cooking and work. Israel was to cease from activities that sustained the regular rhythm of labor and depend on provisions prepared beforehand.

Jer 17:27 But if you do not listen to Me to keep the Sabbath day holy……
Num 15:32-36 While the Israelites were in the wilderness, a man was found…
Exo 16:23 He told them, “This is what the LORD has said:…

in any of your dwellings

The command applied throughout Israel’s camps and homes. Sabbath observance was not limited to public worship or the tabernacle; every household was responsible to honor the day set apart by God.

Lev 23:3 For six days work may be done, but the seventh day…
Jer 17:21-22 This is what the LORD says: Take heed for yourselves;…
Exo 16:29 Understand that the LORD has given you the Sabbath;…

on the Sabbath day.”

The Sabbath marked Israel as God’s covenant people and recalled His rest after creation. It provided a weekly cessation from labor for worship, reflection, and trust in God’s provision. Christ fulfills the Sabbath’s promise of rest, giving His people lasting rest from striving to establish their own righteousness.

Offerings for the Tabernacle

Moses also told the whole congregation of Israel,

Moses addressed the entire assembly because the instructions concerned the nation as a whole. Israel’s worship, service, and covenant obedience were shared responsibilities, not matters left only to its leaders. The gathering reflected Israel’s ordering under God’s rule, with Moses delivering the commands entrusted to him.

Deu 31:30 Then Moses recited aloud to the whole assembly of Israel…
Deu 31:1 When Moses had finished speaking these words to all Israel,
Deu 5:1 Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them:…

“This is what the LORD has commanded:

The work of building the Tabernacle began with God’s command, not human initiative. The sanctuary would stand at the center of Israel’s camp as the appointed place where the LORD dwelt among His redeemed people and where they approached Him according to His revealed order.

Lev 9:6 And Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded you…
Lev 8:5 And Moses said to them, “This is what the LORD has commanded…

Take from among you an offering to the LORD.

Israel was called to supply the materials for the Tabernacle from what God had already provided during the exodus. The sanctuary would stand at the center of the camp as the appointed place where the LORD dwelt among His people, so its construction involved the whole congregation.

1Ch 29:6 Then the leaders of the families, the officers of the tribes…

The materials were given freely rather than collected as a required tax. Willing contributions revealed gratitude, faith, and obedience to the LORD’s command. Men and women throughout the camp participated, providing what was needed for the work entrusted to Bezalel, Oholiab, and the skilled craftsmen.

gold, silver, and bronze;

These costly metals were used for the Tabernacle’s structure, furnishings, and instruments of service. Gold adorned the most sacred furnishings, including the ark and lampstand; silver was used in the bases and related elements of the sanctuary; bronze was used especially for the altar and its utensils in the courtyard. fine linen and goat hair;

Fine linen provided a pure, bright fabric suitable for the sacred furnishings and coverings of the tabernacle. Goat hair formed a durable outer covering, like the material commonly used for tents. Together they supplied both beauty and protection for the sanctuary, where God dwelt among His people and where sacrifice addressed their sin.

ram skins dyed red and fine leather;

The Tabernacle’s coverings combined sacrifice and protection. Rams were used in offerings of consecration and atonement, and their red-dyed skins recalled the blood required for sin. The durable outer leather protected the sanctuary and its holy furnishings from the wilderness environment. Together, these materials pointed to access to God through sacrifice and to the security found under His provision, fulfilled in Christ’s atoning death and faithful care for His people.

Its use gave lasting structure to the place where God dwelt among His people, reflecting the enduring holiness and faithfulness of the covenant. The incorruptible quality of the wood also foreshadowed Christ, the sinless and eternal High Priest.
