David’s Last Song

These are the last words of David:

David’s final recorded oracle looks back on the Lord’s work in raising him to Israel’s throne and speaks forward to the righteous rule God would establish through his house.

1Ki 2:1-4 As the time drew near for David to die, he charged his son…
1Ch 29:28 He died at a ripe old age, full of years, riches, and honor,…
Psa 72:20 Thus conclude the prayers of David son of Jesse.

“The oracle of David son of Jesse,

David remained the son of Jesse, a man from Bethlehem whose rise from tending sheep to ruling Israel came by God’s choice rather than human rank.

Act 13:22 After removing Saul, He raised up David as their king…
1Sa 16:11-13 And Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons”…

Psa 18:35 You have given me Your shield of salvation;…

the one anointed by the God of Jacob,

David’s kingship rested on God’s appointment and covenant faithfulness to Israel. His anointing marked him as the ruler chosen to lead God’s people.

The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me;

David identified the source of his final prophetic words as the Spirit of God. As Israel’s king, he spoke from personal experience, yet the message came by divine direction and carried God’s authority.

Act 1:16 Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled…
Act 4:25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of Your servant,…
2Pe 1:21 For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will…

His word was on my tongue.

The LORD gave David the words he was to speak, making him a faithful human instrument of God’s revelation. His testimony concerning God’s covenant, righteous rule, and coming King rests on God’s own communication.

Isa 59:21 “As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD…
Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……
Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…

The God of Israel spoke;

David’s final oracle came from the covenant God who had chosen, preserved, and governed Israel. His words carried divine authority, not merely the reflection of an aging king.

Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……

the Rock of Israel said to me,

‘He who rules the people with justice,

A king was to govern according to God’s righteous standard, defending what was right and judging without corruption or favoritism. David’s reign pointed beyond itself to the perfect rule promised through his greater Son.

is like the light of the morning at sunrise

Righteous rule brings the clarity, security, and hope that dawn brings after a night of darkness. David describes the blessing of a king who governs in the fear of God, reflecting the goodness of God’s own reign.

Isa 58:8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn…
Pro 4:18 The path of the righteous is like the first gleam…
Mal 4:2 But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness…

of a cloudless dawn,

The image portrays an unhindered day, free from the threat of storm or gloom. Under godly leadership, justice and peace are not obscured by corruption or oppression.

Job 37:21 Now no one can gaze at the sun when it is bright…
Sng 6:10 Who is this who shines like the dawn, as fair as the moon,…
2Pe 1:19 We also have the word of the prophets…

the glistening after the rain

Rain refreshed the land and enabled crops to grow in Israel’s dry climate. Its brightness afterward pictures God’s favor bringing restoration and renewed strength to His people.

Psa 72:6 May he be like rain that falls on freshly cut grass,…
Deu 32:2 Let my teaching fall like rain and my speech settle like dew…
Hos 6:3 So let us know—let us press on to know the LORD.…

on the sprouting grass of the earth.’

Fresh grass following rain depicts life, fruitfulness, and prosperity. David’s words anticipate the lasting reign of the promised King from his line, whose righteous rule will bring enduring blessing.

Isa 55:10-11 For just as rain and snow fall from heaven…
Isa 61:11 For as the earth brings forth its growth, …
Psa 147:8 who covers the sky with clouds, who prepares rain…

Is not my house right with God?

David rests in God’s covenant faithfulness toward his royal line. Though David’s family would know sin, discipline, and failure, God had chosen his house to bear the promised kingdom. The security of that promise depended on God’s purpose rather than the perfection of David’s descendants.

2Sa 7:18-19 Then King David went in, sat before the LORD…
1Ch 17:16-17 Then King David went in, sat before the LORD…

For He has established with me an everlasting covenant,

God had pledged that David’s throne and kingdom would endure before Him. The covenant looked beyond David’s immediate heirs to the final Son of David, Jesus Christ, whose reign will never end. David’s confidence at the close of his life rests in God’s unbreakable commitment.

2Sa 7:12-16 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest…
Isa 55:3 Incline your ear and come to Me; listen,…
Jer 32:40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them…

ordered and secured in every part.

God had arranged His covenant with complete wisdom and had made it certain by His own power. Neither political upheaval, rebellion, nor the later fall of Judah could overturn what God had determined. The promise would be preserved until its fulfillment in Christ.

2Sa 22:31 As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD…
Psa 111:7-8 The works of His hands are truth and justice;…
Psa 19:7 The Law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul;…

Will He not bring about my full salvation

David trusted God to accomplish all that He had promised, including deliverance, preservation, and the ultimate salvation bound up with his covenant. His hope reached beyond temporary victories to God’s lasting redemption.

2Sa 22:51 Great salvation He brings to His king…
Luk 1:69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us…
Psa 118:14 The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become…

and my every desire?

David’s deepest desire was the completion of God’s purpose for his house and kingdom. He expected God to fulfill what He had established, because his hope was fixed on the covenant rather than on his own strength.

Psa 21:2 You have granted his heart’s desire and have not withheld…
Psa 37:4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give…
Psa 145:19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him;…

But the worthless are all like thorns raked aside,

Those who reject the rule of God are compared to thorns—harmful, unfruitful, and unfit for the place of blessing described for the righteous king. Like thornbushes cleared from a field, they are removed rather than cultivated among God’s people.

Isa 33:12 The peoples will be burned to ashes, like thorns cut down…
Psa 58:9 Before your pots can feel the burning thorns…
1Sa 2:12 Now the sons of Eli were wicked men; they had no regard for…

for they can never be gathered by hand.

Thorns cannot be handled safely or brought in as something useful. Their removal requires care and strength, pointing to God’s final judgment on persistent rebellion. David’s words distinguish the lasting security of God’s covenant from the certain end of those who oppose His ways.

Luk 6:44 For each tree is known by its own fruit.…
Mat 7:16 By their fruit you will recognize them…
Heb 6:8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless,…

The man who touches them must be armed with iron or with the shaft of a spear.

The wicked are like thornbushes, dangerous to grasp and impossible to gather by hand. They must be confronted with strength and caution, as soldiers used iron weapons and spears against hostile forces. David’s imagery portrays evil as something that cannot be domesticated or safely tolerated.

Num 35:16 If, however, anyone strikes a person with an iron object…
1Sa 17:7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam,…
2Sa 21:19 Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at Gob…

The fire burns them to ashes in the place where they lie.”

Like thorns cut down and burned where they fall, the wicked face complete judgment. Their destruction is final, and they cannot escape the consequences of their rebellion.

Isa 33:12 The peoples will be burned to ashes, like thorns cut down…
Ezk 28:18 By the multitude of your iniquities and the dishonesty…
Mal 4:3 Then you will trample the wicked, for they will be ashes…

Next in command was Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite.

Eleazar stood among David’s leading warriors, men whose courage and loyalty helped secure David’s reign. His identification by family and clan reflects the established tribal ties within Israel that supported David.

1Ch 11:12 Next in command was Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite……

1Ch 11:19 “Far be it from me, my God, to do this!”…

he went with David to taunt the Philistines

When Israel faced a renewed Philistine threat, he joined David in defying the Philistines. Their bold challenge reflected confidence in the Lord’s help, even as Israel’s army faltered.

1Sa 17:10 Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel…
1Sa 17:26 David asked the men who were standing with him,……
1Sa 17:45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come against me…

who had gathered for battle at Pas-dammim.

Located in the Valley of Elah, Pas-dammim was a strategic battlefield where Philistine forces sought to press into Israelite territory.

1Ch 11:13 He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines…
1Sa 17:1 Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war…
1Sa 17:2 Saul and the men of Israel assembled and camped…

The men of Israel retreated,

The men of Israel retreated, leaving Eleazar and David to stand against the enemy. Their retreat magnified the courage of those who remained and the deliverance God gave through them.

1Sa 17:24 When all the men of Israel saw Goliath, they fled…
1Ch 10:1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and many fell…
1Sa 4:10 So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated…

but Eleazar stood his ground

Eleazar, one of David’s mighty men, refused to retreat when the Philistines attacked. His courage and loyalty marked him as a warrior who would not abandon his king or his people when the battle turned difficult.

2Ch 20:17 You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions…
Exo 14:13 But Moses told the people, “Do not be afraid.…
Deu 20:4 For the LORD your God goes with you to fight for you…

and struck the Philistines

Israel’s long conflict with the Philistines formed much of David’s military history. Eleazar’s stand helped turn back an enemy force that threatened Israel’s security and opposed the Lord’s chosen people.

2Sa 5:25 So David did as the LORD had commanded him,…
1Ch 14:16 So David did as God had commanded him, and…
1Sa 17:49-51 Then David reached into his bag, took out a stone,…

until his hand grew weary and stuck to his sword.

The prolonged fighting left Eleazar exhausted, yet he continued until the enemy was defeated. His grip on the sword portrays determined endurance in the midst of a desperate battle.

1Ch 11:13 He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines…
Exo 17:12 When Moses’ hands grew heavy, they took a stone…
Isa 40:29-31 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength…

The LORD brought about a great victory that day.

Though Eleazar fought faithfully, the victory belonged to the Lord. David’s warriors were instruments in God’s deliverance of Israel, and their success depended ultimately on His power.

1Ch 11:14 But Eleazar and David stationed themselves in the field…
1Sa 11:13 But Saul ordered, “No one shall be put to death this day,…
2Ch 20:15 And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!…

Then the troops returned to him, but only to plunder the dead.

The other Israelite soldiers returned after the enemy had been routed, gathering the spoil from the battlefield. Eleazar had borne the fiercest part of the conflict, while the nation benefited from the victory God had given.

2Ch 20:25 Then Jehoshaphat and his people went to carry off…
1Sa 17:53 When the Israelites returned from their pursuit…
1Sa 31:8-10 The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead…

And after him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite.

Shammah, whose name means “astonishment” or “desolation,” was one of David’s mighty men, the proven warriors who helped secure and defend Israel during David’s reign. He followed Eleazar in the record of these men. His identification as the son of Agee and a Hararite distinguishes him from others bearing the same name and reflects the varied origins of those who served under David.

1Ch 11:27 Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite,
1Ch 12:1-2 Now these were the men who came to David at Ziklag,…
1Ch 12:8 Some Gadites defected to David at his stronghold…

When the Philistines had banded together near a field full of lentils,

The Philistines had assembled for a raid or battle in cultivated land, where seizing crops would harm Israel’s food supply and livelihood. Their repeated incursions into Israel’s territory were part of the continuing conflict between the two nations.

1Ch 11:13-14 He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines…
2Sa 5:17-18 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed…
1Ch 14:8-12 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king…

Israel’s troops fled from them.

The Israelite soldiers withdrew before the Philistine force, leaving the field exposed. Shammah’s stand in the lentil field, described in the following account, showed the courage that marked David’s mighty men and brought deliverance from the enemy.

1Sa 31:1-2 Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and many fell…
1Ch 10:1-2 Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and many fell…
1Sa 13:5-7 Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel…

But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field,

While the rest of Israel’s troops fled before the Philistines, Shammah remained at his post. The field, likely planted with lentils, represented part of Israel’s land and livelihood, making its defense significant despite its humble appearance.

1Ch 11:13-14 He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines…
2Ch 20:17 You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions…
Exo 14:13 But Moses told the people, “Do not be afraid.…

defended it,

Shammah refused to surrender ground that belonged to Israel. His courage displayed loyalty to David, commitment to his people, and confidence that the Lord could preserve him against a superior force.

1Sa 17:35 I went after it, struck it down, and delivered the lamb…
1Sa 25:16 They were a wall around us, both day and night…
Neh 4:14 After I had made an inspection, I stood up and said…

and struck down the Philistines.

The Philistine attack was turned back through Shammah’s determined resistance. Their repeated incursions into Israelite territory marked them as a continuing threat during David’s rise and reign.

Jdg 15:15-16 He found the fresh jawbone of a donkey…
1Sa 14:13-14 So Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet,…
1Sa 17:50-51 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling…

So the LORD brought about a great victory.

Shammah fought faithfully, but the victory belonged to the Lord. The account honors human courage while making clear that Israel’s deliverance came through God’s power.

1Sa 17:47 And all those assembled here will know that it is not…
2Ch 20:15 And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!…
Psa 144:10 Him who gives victory to kings, who frees His servant David…

three of the thirty chief men

These were leading warriors among David’s mighty men, distinguished by courage, skill, and proven loyalty to him.

1Ch 11:20 Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the Three…

David was holding a defensible refuge in the Judean foothills during the period of Philistine pressure. Adullam had become an early center of support for David and the men who joined his cause.

1Sa 22:2 And all who were distressed or indebted or discontented…

The Philistines had established a military presence near Jerusalem in a fertile, strategically important valley, threatening Israelite territory and challenging David’s growing leadership.

2Sa 5:18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out…
2Sa 5:22 Once again the Philistines came up and spread out…
1Ch 14:9 Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley…

At that time

David was facing renewed Philistine pressure during his reign over Israel.

1Ch 11:15 Three of the thirty chief men went down to David…
2Sa 5:17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed…
1Ch 14:8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king…

David was in the stronghold,

David was positioned in a defensible stronghold while the enemy occupied the surrounding territory.

1Sa 22:4 So he left them in the care of the king of Moab,…
1Sa 24:1 After Saul had returned from pursuing the Philistines,…

David’s own hometown lay under Philistine control, demonstrating the extent of their invasion and the urgent threat to Israel.

1Ch 11:17-19 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone…
2Sa 5:18-25 Now the Philistines had come and spread out…

David longed for water

While David was in the stronghold and the Philistines held Bethlehem, he remembered the water from his hometown. His desire reflects both physical thirst and the loss of access to the place closely tied to his family and early life.

1Ch 11:17 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone…
Psa 42:1-2 For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah.…
Psa 63:1 A Psalm of David, when he was in the Wilderness…

and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water

David voiced a personal wish, not an order. His men acted out of devotion to him, willingly risking themselves to fulfill what he had only expressed aloud.

Jhn 4:7-10 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water,…
1Ki 17:10-11 So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived…
Gen 24:17-20 So the servant ran to meet her and said…

from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!”

The well stood near Bethlehem’s gate, a central and familiar place in the city David could not safely enter while the Philistines occupied it. The request shows the cost of Israel’s conflict with the Philistines and sets up David’s refusal to drink water obtained at such danger.

1Ch 11:18 So the Three broke through the Philistine camp,…
Rut 4:1 Meanwhile, Boaz went to the gate and sat down there.…
1Sa 17:12 Now David was the son of a man named Jesse, an Ephrathite…

So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine camp,

David’s three leading warriors penetrated the Philistine position near Bethlehem at great personal risk. Their action displayed both extraordinary courage and steadfast loyalty to their king while the Philistines held the area.

2Sa 5:17-25 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed…
1Ch 14:8-17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king…
2Sa 21:15-17 Once again the Philistines waged war against Israel…

drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem,

The well was near David’s hometown, a place associated with his early life and family. Though the request had apparently been spoken as a longing rather than a command, the men treated it as an opportunity to honor David.

1Ch 11:17 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone…
Rut 4:1 Meanwhile, Boaz went to the gate and sat down there.…
Mic 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small…

and brought it back to David.

They returned safely with the water, having accomplished a task that had no military necessity but required remarkable daring. Their devotion reflected the close bond between David and the men who served under him.

1Ch 11:18 So the Three broke through the Philistine camp,…
2Sa 16:1-2 When David had gone a little beyond the summit,…
2Sa 17:27-29 When David came to Mahanaim, he was met by Shobi…

But he refused to drink it;

David recognized that the water had been obtained at the possible cost of his men’s lives. He would not satisfy his own desire with something purchased through such danger.

1Ch 11:19 “Far be it from me, my God, to do this!”…
2Sa 24:24 So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen…
1Sa 26:9-11 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him…

instead, he poured it out to the LORD,

David presented the water to the LORD as an offering, acknowledging that the lives and courage of his men belonged to God. By pouring it out, he honored their sacrifice and showed that such devotion was too precious to be used for personal pleasure.

1Sa 7:6 When they had gathered at Mizpah, they drew water…
Gen 35:14 So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where God had spoken…
Num 28:7 The drink offering accompanying each lamb shall be…

saying, “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this!

David regarded the water as too costly for personal enjoyment because it had been obtained at the risk of his men’s lives. His appeal to the LORD shows reverence and gratitude, recognizing that their devotion could not be treated lightly.

1Ch 11:17-19 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone…
1Sa 24:6 So he said to his men, “The LORD forbid…
1Sa 26:11 But the LORD forbid that I should extend my hand…

Is this not the blood of the men who risked their lives?”

The water represented the lives of the three warriors who broke through Philistine lines at Bethlehem to obtain it. David considered their danger and loyalty so weighty that drinking it would dishonor the cost of their action.

Lev 17:10-14 If anyone from the house of Israel or a foreigner…
Deu 12:23-25 Only be sure not to eat the blood, because the blood…
Gen 9:4 But you must not eat meat with its lifeblood still in it.

So he refused to drink it.

Rather than consume the water, David poured it out before the LORD as an offering. He honored both God, who had preserved the men, and the warriors whose courage had made the gift possible.

1Ki 13:8-10 But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me…
Mat 27:34 they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall;…
Dan 1:8-16 But Daniel made up his mind not to defile himself…

Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.

The account preserves the remarkable loyalty, courage, and military skill of David’s three leading warriors, whose deeds helped establish and defend his kingdom.

1Ch 11:20-25 Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the Three…
2Sa 21:15-22 Once again the Philistines waged war against Israel…
1Ch 20:4-8 Some time later, war broke out with the Philistines…

Now Abishai, the brother of Joab and son of Zeruiah,

Abishai belonged to David’s own family through Zeruiah, David’s sister. Along with Joab and Asahel, he became one of the leading military figures of David’s reign.
