Ephesians 5

Imitators of God

1 Γίνεσθε (Be) οὖν (therefore) μιμηταὶ (imitators) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) ἀγαπητά (beloved), 2 καὶ (and) περιπατεῖτε (walk) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ἡμᾶς (us) καὶ (and) παρέδωκεν (gave up) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) προσφορὰν (as an offering) καὶ (and) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) εἰς (into) ὀσμὴν (a fragrance) εὐωδίας (of a sweet smell).

3 Πορνεία (Sexual immorality) δὲ (however) καὶ (and) ἀκαθαρσία (impurity) πᾶσα (all) (or) πλεονεξία (covetousness) μηδὲ (not even) ὀνομαζέσθω (let be named) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you⁺), καθὼς (just as) πρέπει (is proper) ἁγίοις (to saints), 4 καὶ (and) αἰσχρότης (shamefulness) καὶ (and) μωρολογία (foolish talk) (or) εὐτραπελία (crude joking), (which) οὐκ (not) ἀνῆκεν (are fitting), ἀλλὰ (but) μᾶλλον (rather) εὐχαριστία (thanksgiving). 5 τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) ἴστε (you⁺ know) γινώσκοντες (realizing), ὅτι (that) πᾶς (every) πόρνος (sexually immoral person) (or) ἀκάθαρτος (impure person) (or) πλεονέκτης (covetous person), (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰδωλολάτρης (an idolater), οὐκ (no) ἔχει (has) κληρονομίαν (inheritance) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) καὶ (and) Θεοῦ (of God).

6 Μηδεὶς (No one) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἀπατάτω (let deceive) κενοῖς (with empty) λόγοις (words)· διὰ (because of) ταῦτα (these things) γὰρ (for) ἔρχεται (comes) (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐπὶ (upon) τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) τῆς (-) ἀπειθείας (of disobedience). 7 μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) γίνεσθε (be) συμμέτοχοι (partakers) αὐτῶν (with them)·

8 Ἦτε (You⁺ were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) σκότος (darkness), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) φῶς (you are light) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord)· ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) φωτὸς (of light) περιπατεῖτε (walk),— 9  (-) γὰρ (for) καρπὸς (the fruit) τοῦ (of the) φωτὸς (light) ἐν (is in) πάσῃ (all) ἀγαθωσύνῃ (goodness) καὶ (and) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (truth),— 10 δοκιμάζοντες (discerning) τί (what) ἐστιν (is) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord),

11 Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) συνκοινωνεῖτε (have fellowship with) τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (deeds) τοῖς (-) ἀκάρποις (unfruitful) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness), μᾶλλον (rather) δὲ (however) καὶ (even) ἐλέγχετε (expose them), 12 τὰ (the things) γὰρ (for) κρυφῇ (in secret) γινόμενα (being done) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτῶν (them) αἰσχρόν (shameful) ἐστιν (it is) καὶ (even) λέγειν (to speak of)· 13 τὰ (-) δὲ (But) πάντα (everything) ἐλεγχόμενα (being exposed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) φωτὸς (light) φανεροῦται (is made manifest)· πᾶν (everything) γὰρ (for) τὸ (-) φανερούμενον (being made manifest) φῶς (light) ἐστιν (is). 14 διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says)·

Ἔγειρε (Awake you), (the one) καθεύδων (sleeping),

καὶ (and) ἀνάστα (rise up) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead),

καὶ (and) ἐπιφαύσει (will shine upon) σοι (you) (-) Χριστός (Christ).

15 Βλέπετε (Watch) οὖν (therefore) ἀκριβῶς (carefully) πῶς (how) περιπατεῖτε (you⁺ walk), μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἄσοφοι (unwise) ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) σοφοί (wise), 16 ἐξαγοραζόμενοι (redeeming) τὸν (the) καιρόν (time), ὅτι (because) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) πονηραί (evil) εἰσιν (are). 17 διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) μὴ (not) γίνεσθε (be) ἄφρονες (foolish), ἀλλὰ (but) συνίετε (understand) τί (what) τὸ (is the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord). 18 καὶ (And) μὴ (not) μεθύσκεσθε (be drunk) οἴνῳ (with wine), ἐν (in) (which) ἐστιν (is) ἀσωτία (debauchery), ἀλλὰ (But) πληροῦσθε (be filled) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit), 19 λαλοῦντες (speaking) ἑαυτοῖς (to each other) ἐν (in) ψαλμοῖς (psalms) καὶ (and) ὕμνοις (hymns) καὶ (and) ᾠδαῖς (songs) πνευματικαῖς (spiritual), ᾄδοντες (singing) καὶ (and) ψάλλοντες (making melody) τῇ (in the) καρδίᾳ (heart) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), 20 εὐχαριστοῦντες (giving thanks) πάντοτε (always) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all things) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τῷ (to the) Θεῷ (God) καὶ (and) Πατρί (Father),

21 Ὑποτασσόμενοι (Be submitting) ἀλλήλοις (to one another) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (fear) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

22 Αἱ (-) γυναῖκες (wives) τοῖς (to) ἰδίοις (your own) ἀνδράσιν (husbands) ὡς (as) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), 23 ὅτι (for) ἀνήρ (the husband) ἐστιν (is) κεφαλὴ (head) τῆς (of the) γυναικὸς (wife) ὡς (as) καὶ (also) (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) κεφαλὴ (is the head) τῆς (of the) ἐκκλησίας (church), αὐτὸς (He Himself) σωτὴρ (Savior) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body). 24 ἀλλὰ (But) ὡς (as) (the) ἐκκλησία (church) ὑποτάσσεται (submits) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (to Christ), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) αἱ (-) γυναῖκες (wives) τοῖς (to their) ἀνδράσιν (husbands) ἐν (in) παντί (everything).

25 Οἱ (-) ἄνδρες (Husbands), ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τὰς (your) γυναῖκας (wives), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἠγάπησεν (loved) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church) καὶ (and) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) παρέδωκεν (gave up) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῆς (her), 26 ἵνα (so that) αὐτὴν (her) ἁγιάσῃ (He might sanctify) καθαρίσας (having cleansed her) τῷ (by the) λουτρῷ (washing) τοῦ (-) ὕδατος (of water) ἐν (in) ῥήματι (the word), 27 ἵνα (so that) παραστήσῃ (might present) αὐτὸς (He) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) ἔνδοξον (in glory) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church), μὴ (not) ἔχουσαν (having) σπίλον (spot) (or) ῥυτίδα (wrinkle) (or) τι (any) τῶν (of the) τοιούτων (such things), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) (she may be) ἁγία (holy) καὶ (and) ἄμωμος (blameless).

28 Οὕτως (So) ὀφείλουσιν (ought) καὶ (also) οἱ (-) ἄνδρες (husbands) ἀγαπᾶν (to love) τὰς (the) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) γυναῖκας (wives) ὡς (as) τὰ (the) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) σώματα (bodies). (The one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) γυναῖκα (wife) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ἀγαπᾷ (loves)· 29 οὐδεὶς (No one) γάρ (for) ποτε (at any time) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) σάρκα (flesh) ἐμίσησεν (hated), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκτρέφει (he nourishes) καὶ (and) θάλπει (cherishes) αὐτήν (it), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also does) (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church), 30 ὅτι (for) μέλη (members) ἐσμὲν (we are) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

31 Ἀντὶ (Because of) τούτου (this) καταλείψει (will leave) ἄνθρωπος (a man) τὸν (his) πατέρα (father) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) μητέρα (mother) καὶ (and) προσκολληθήσεται (be joined) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἔσονται (will be) οἱ (the) δύο (two) εἰς (into) σάρκα (flesh) μίαν (one). 32 τὸ (-) μυστήριον (Mystery) τοῦτο (this) μέγα (great) ἐστίν (is), ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (speak) εἰς (as to) Χριστὸν (Christ) καὶ (and) εἰς (as to) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church). 33 πλὴν (However) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) οἱ (-) καθ’ (every) ἕνα (one) ἕκαστος (each) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) γυναῖκα (wife) οὕτως (so) ἀγαπάτω (let love) ὡς (as) ἑαυτόν (himself), (-) δὲ (and) γυνὴ (the wife) ἵνα (that) φοβῆται (she may respect) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (husband).
