Berean Study Bible Freedom in ChristChrist’s death and resurrection deliver believers from sin’s rule and from seeking acceptance with God through keeping the law. In Galatia, teachers were urging Gentile Christians to receive circumcision and submit to the Mosaic Law as necessary for salvation. Paul insists that Christ’s work is sufficient and that believers are free to live under the direction of the Spirit. Jhn 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Stand firm, then, The Galatians were not to surrender the gospel they had received. They needed steadfastness against teaching that added human requirements to faith in Christ. 1Co 16:13 Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage.… and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery. Returning to the law as a means of justification would place them under a burden Christ had removed. The law could reveal sin but could not give righteousness or life; salvation rests on Christ alone. Act 15:10 Now then, why do you test God by placing… Take notice: Paul urgently calls the Galatian believers to recognize the danger of abandoning the gospel he preached. Heb 2:1 We must pay closer attention, therefore,… I, Paul, tell you As the apostle who first brought them the message of Christ, Paul speaks with personal authority and deep concern. 2Co 10:1 Now by the mildness and gentleness of Christ,… that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Circumcision marked membership in the covenant given to Abraham and remained central to Jewish identity. Some teachers were urging Gentile Christians to receive it as necessary for full acceptance before God. Act 15:1 Then some men came down from Judea and were teaching… Christ will be of no value to you at all. Seeking justification through circumcision meant turning from Christ’s finished work to the law. Christ cannot be treated as an addition to human efforts for righteousness; salvation rests wholly on Him. Gal 2:21 I do not set aside the grace of God. For if righteousness… Again I testify Paul repeats his warning to stress its seriousness and certainty. He speaks with apostolic authority against making circumcision a condition of acceptance before God. Gal 1:9 As we have said before, so now I say again:… to every man who gets himself circumcised The issue was not circumcision as an ethnic or cultural practice, but receiving it as a religious requirement for justification. Some were urging Gentile believers to adopt this sign of the Abrahamic covenant in order to be fully included among God’s people. Rom 2:25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law… that he is obligated to obey the whole law. Anyone who seeks righteousness through circumcision places himself under the entire Mosaic Law, not merely one requirement. The Law demands complete obedience and cannot justify sinners; righteousness is received through faith in Christ alone. Jas 2:10 Whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at one point… You who are trying to be justified by the law Paul warns the Galatians against the teaching that obedience to the Mosaic Law, especially circumcision, was necessary for salvation. The Law revealed sin and directed Israel’s covenant life, but it could not make sinners righteous before God. Righteousness is received through faith in Christ, not earned by human obedience. Gal 2:16 know that a man is not justified by works of the law… have been severed from Christ; Those who seek acceptance with God through the Law abandon Christ as the basis of their justification. Christ’s saving work cannot be combined with reliance on legal observance as a means of salvation. To turn to the Law for righteousness is to reject the sufficiency of His sacrifice. Eph 2:12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ,… you have fallen away from grace. They had departed from the gospel of grace by replacing God’s free gift with a system of works. Grace and justification by the Law stand in opposition: salvation rests wholly on Christ and is received by faith. Heb 6:4-6 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened… But by faith But by faith, believers receive righteousness through trust in Jesus Christ rather than through works required by the Mosaic Law. Justification rests on Christ’s saving work, and faith characterizes the ongoing life of those whom God has declared righteous. Rom 3:28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith… we eagerly await Christians live in expectation of the day when Christ returns, sin is removed, and God’s work of salvation is completed. This hope produces patient endurance rather than passive delay. Rom 8:23-25 Not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits… through the Spirit The Holy Spirit gives believers new life, assures them of their place in God’s family, and enables them to walk in obedience. His presence distinguishes the people of the new covenant from those seeking acceptance through the law. Rom 8:13-16 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;… the hope of righteousness. Though believers are already counted righteous in Christ, they await the final fulfillment of that righteousness when they are fully conformed to Him at His return. Rom 5:1-2 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith… For in Christ Jesus For in Christ Jesus, believers are united to Him through faith and share in the benefits of His death and resurrection. Their standing before God rests on Christ’s righteousness rather than ethnic identity or religious observance. Rom 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those… neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. Circumcision marked Israel’s covenant identity under the law given through Moses, but some teachers insisted that Gentile believers must receive it. Paul rejects that requirement. Neither Jewish ancestry nor Gentile background can secure acceptance with God. 1Co 7:19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing.… What matters is faith God justifies sinners through trusting in Jesus Christ, not through works of the law. Saving faith relies on Christ’s completed sacrifice and receives the grace God provides. Rom 3:28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith… expressing itself through love. True faith produces love for God and others. It is not empty profession but a changed life that serves others and fulfills God’s moral purpose. 1Th 1:3 continually recalling before our God and Father… You were running so well. The Galatian believers had begun their Christian lives with faith in Christ and freedom from reliance on the Mosaic Law. Their earlier progress showed a clear acceptance of the gospel Paul had preached. 1Co 9:24-25 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run… Who has obstructed you False teachers had entered the churches and diverted them from that course. By requiring circumcision and observance of the Law for Gentile believers, they challenged the sufficiency of Christ’s saving work. 1Th 2:18 For we wanted to come to you—indeed I, Paul, tried again… from obeying the truth? The truth is the gospel of justification by faith in Christ apart from works of the Law. Turning to legal requirements as a basis for acceptance with God meant abandoning the message they had first received. 1Pe 1:22 Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth… Such persuasion The pressure to accept circumcision and the Mosaic law as requirements for salvation was turning the Galatian believers from the gospel Paul had preached. 2Co 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers… does not come Such teaching has no place in the message of salvation by grace through faith in Christ. Jas 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above… from the One God is the source of the true gospel and 1Th 2:12 encouraging you, comforting you, and urging you…… who calls you. He called the Galatians into fellowship with Christ, not into reliance on works of the law. 1Co 1:9 God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son… A little leaven Leaven commonly pictured a corrupting influence. Removed from Jewish homes during Passover, it was associated with cleansing from impurity. Paul applies the image to the false teaching troubling the Galatian churches. 1Co 5:6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know… works through Error does not remain contained. Once accepted, it spreads through the congregation, weakening confidence in the sufficiency of Christ and leading believers away from the gospel. Mat 13:33 The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman… the whole batch of dough. The dough represents the church as a whole. A small departure from truth can affect its teaching, fellowship, and conduct, making vigilance necessary for the health of the entire body. Rom 11:16 If the first part of the dough is holy, so is the batch… I am confident in the Lord Paul’s assurance rests in the Lord’s power to preserve His people and lead them back to the truth. Though the Galatians had been unsettled by false teaching, Paul expects them to reject any message that alters the gospel of grace through faith in Christ. 2Th 3:4 And we have confidence in the Lord that you… that you will take no other view. The believers were to hold firmly to the gospel Paul had preached rather than submit to demands for circumcision and observance of the Mosaic Law as requirements for salvation. Php 3:15 All of us who are mature should embrace this point of view… The one who is troubling you The agitator, whether one person or a group, was confusing the churches by promoting a false gospel and dividing Jewish and Gentile believers. Gal 1:7 which is not even a gospel. Evidently some people… will bear the judgment, God would hold the false teacher accountable for corrupting the gospel and leading others away from the truth. 2Th 1:6 After all, it is only right for God to repay with affliction… whoever he may be. Position, reputation, and influence would not shield anyone from God’s impartial judgment. Rom 2:11 For God does not show favoritism. Now, brothers, Paul appeals to the Galatians as fellow members of God’s family, urging them to remember their shared life in Christ. 1Co 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord… if I am still preaching circumcision, Paul rejects the charge that he still requires Gentile believers to submit to circumcision and the Jewish law. Act 15:1 Then some men came down from Judea and were teaching… why am I still being persecuted? His suffering from those who defended circumcision shows that his message remained opposed to their demands. Gal 6:12 Those who want to make a good impression outwardly… In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. If circumcision were necessary for acceptance with God, Christ’s death would no longer stand as the sufficient basis of salvation, and the cross would no longer confront human reliance on religious works. 1Co 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews… As for those who are agitating you, Paul refers to those who were troubling the Galatian churches by insisting that Gentile believers must be circumcised and keep the Mosaic law to be fully accepted by God. Their teaching distorted the gospel of grace and unsettled believers who had received Christ by faith. Act 15:24 It has come to our attention that some went out from us… I wish they would proceed to emasculate themselves! Paul sharply exposes the folly of making circumcision a requirement for righteousness. Those who promoted it as necessary for salvation were not merely adding a religious practice; they were denying the sufficiency of Christ’s work. His reference to emasculation is hyperbolic, underscoring the absurdity and danger of their demands. Deu 23:1 No man with crushed or severed genitals… For you, brothers, were called to freedom; Believers in Christ have been released from dependence on the Mosaic Law for justification and from slavery to sin. Paul wrote to churches troubled by Judaizers who taught that Gentile Christians must adopt Jewish law to be fully accepted by God. Their calling rests on Christ’s saving work, not on legal observance. Jhn 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Freedom from the Law does not permit sinful living. The flesh refers to the fallen human nature that resists God and seeks self-gratification. Christians are not to return to the immoral patterns common in their former pagan lives or to treat grace as permission for sin. 1Pe 2:16 Live in freedom, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up… Rather, serve one another in love. Christian liberty is expressed through willing service to fellow believers. Instead of using freedom for self-interest, believers are to seek one another’s good in the love Christ commanded and demonstrated. 1Pe 4:10 As good stewards of the manifold grace of God,… The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree: Paul confronts those who treated obedience to the Mosaic Law as necessary for justification. The law’s moral purpose is carried out in love, not through legalistic efforts to earn acceptance before God. Love governs the believer’s conduct toward others and prevents the selfishness and conflict that threatened the Galatian churches. Rom 13:8-10 Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love.… “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Drawn from the Law given to Israel, this command requires sincere concern for others equal to the care naturally given to oneself. Neighborly love extends beyond personal friends or one’s own group and rejects hostility, exploitation, and indifference. Such love reflects obedience to God’s will and fulfills the law’s demands in human relationships. Lev 19:18 Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against any of your… But if you keep on biting and devouring one another, Paul portrays the Galatian believers as turning on each other like wild animals. Disputes over the Law, circumcision, and Gentile inclusion were fostering pride, hostility, and division rather than love. Such conduct denied the freedom believers had received in Christ and damaged the fellowship He established. Jas 4:1-2 What causes conflicts and quarrels among you?… watch out, The churches needed to recognize where their conflicts were leading. Each believer bore responsibility to resist bitterness, selfish ambition, and legalistic judgment before these attitudes spread through the congregation. Mat 24:4 Jesus answered, “See to it that no one deceives you. or you will be consumed by one another. Continued strife would not produce faithful obedience or spiritual strength but would ruin the unity and witness of the churches. A community divided by resentment cannot stand, whereas the law’s true purpose is fulfilled through love for one’s neighbor. Isa 9:20-21 They carve out what is on the right, but they are hungry;…
Walking by the SpiritPaul continues his instruction to the Galatian believers, directing them away from reliance on the law and toward the life God provides through faith in Christ. Rom 12:1-2 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,… walk by the Spirit, Believers are to order their daily conduct under the Holy Spirit’s leading, depending on His power rather than human effort. Jhn 14:16-17 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another… and you will not gratify As the Spirit governs a believer’s life, sinful impulses are not allowed to rule or be fulfilled or completed in their intended expression. Rom 13:14 Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,… the desires of the flesh. The flesh is humanity’s fallen nature, with its self-centered desires and rebellion against God. It remains opposed to the Spirit, producing attitudes and actions inconsistent with the new life believers have received in Christ. 1Jn 2:16-17 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh… For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, The flesh is humanity’s fallen nature, marked by rebellion against God since the fall. Its desires turn inward, seeking self-rule, sinful pleasure, and independence from God’s commands. Though believers have been made new in Christ, the old sinful nature remains a source of temptation during earthly life. Rom 8:5-8 Those who live according to the flesh… and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. The Holy Spirit dwells in believers and produces desires that conform to God’s will. He leads them away from sin and toward holiness, obedience, love, and self-control. His work is not merely external guidance but an inward transformation that increasingly conforms believers to Christ. Mat 26:41 Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation.… They are opposed to each other, The conflict between the flesh and the Spirit is continual and real. The flesh resists the Spirit’s work, while the Spirit opposes the sinful impulses of the flesh. Christian life therefore includes spiritual warfare within the believer as well as resistance to sin in the world. Rom 7:23 But I see another law at work in my body, warring against… so that you do not do what you want. Neither sinful desires nor human will can rightly govern the believer’s life. The flesh draws toward what dishonors God, while the Spirit restrains sin and directs the believer toward obedience. Victory comes through yielding to the Spirit rather than following the desires of the fallen nature. Rom 7:15-17 I do not understand what I do. For what I want… But if you are led by the Spirit, “But if you are led by the Spirit” describes the ongoing guidance of believers by the Holy Spirit. Those who belong to Christ are no longer governed by the Mosaic Law or controlled by the flesh; instead, the Spirit produces obedience to God from within and shapes their conduct according to their new identity in Christ. Rom 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. you are not under the law. Gentile believers were not required to submit to the Mosaic Law as the means of righteousness, despite the claims of the Judaizers troubling the Galatian churches. The law had exposed sin and pointed forward to Christ, but justification comes through faith in Him. Freedom from the law is not permission for sin; the Spirit directs believers to fulfill God’s will through love. Rom 6:14 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not… The acts of the flesh are obvious: Fallen human nature produces conduct that openly opposes God’s design and rule. Paul names sins that marked both pagan society and the old way of life from which believers had been called. Rom 8:5-8 Those who live according to the flesh… sexual immorality, Sexual sin includes all sexual activity outside the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman. Such practices were common in the surrounding Greco-Roman culture and were often connected with idolatry and public vice. 1Co 6:18-20 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin… impurity, Moral uncleanness reaches beyond outward acts to corrupt desires, speech, and conduct that defile a person before God. Eph 4:19 Having lost all sense of shame, they have given… and debauchery; Shameless, unchecked indulgence in sensual pleasure reveals a refusal of self-control and disregard for God’s standards. Eph 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to… idolatry and sorcery; Idolatry was widespread throughout the Greco-Roman world, where people honored many gods through temples, images, sacrifices, and household shrines. It rejects the worship owed to the one true God and includes giving ultimate devotion to anything that takes His place. Sorcery involved occult practices intended to gain power, knowledge, protection, or control through spiritual forces apart from God. Both practices joined people to pagan worship and represented rebellion against God. Rev 9:20-21 Now the rest of mankind still did not repent… hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; These sins destroy relationships and disturb the fellowship of believers. Hatred fosters hostility, discord creates ongoing conflict, jealousy resents another person’s good, and rage gives uncontrolled anger room to injure others. Such conduct grows from self-centered desires rather than love and peace. 1Jn 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, … rivalries, divisions, factions, Rivalries arise when people pursue personal status or insist on their own interests. Divisions and factions split a congregation into opposing groups, often centered on leaders, preferences, or disputes. These works of the flesh weaken the unity God intends for His people and replace mutual service with contention. 1Co 3:3-4 for you are still worldly. For since there is jealousy… and envy; Envy resents the good given to others and breeds discontent, rivalry, and hostility. It lay behind Cain’s hatred of Abel and Joseph’s brothers’ treatment of him. Rather than receiving God’s providence with gratitude, envy turns another person’s blessing into a cause for bitterness. Pro 14:30 A tranquil heart is life to the body, but… drunkenness, Drunkenness surrenders self-control to alcohol and commonly opens the way to reckless conduct, violence, impurity, and neglect of duty. Such excess was common in pagan feasts and social life, but God calls His people to sobriety and discipline. Pro 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler,… orgies, Orgies describe riotous revelry marked by uncontrolled sensual indulgence. In the Greco-Roman world, such behavior often accompanied festivals, banquets, and idolatrous celebrations. It stands against the purity and self-control required of those who belong to Christ. Rom 13:13-14 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime,… and the like. The sins named are representative rather than complete. Every form of conduct arising from the flesh belongs under the same condemnation, requiring believers to reject sin rather than excuse it because it is not specifically listed. Mrk 7:21-23 For from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts… I warn you, as I did before, Paul repeats a warning he had already given the Galatians, showing the seriousness of the matter and his concern for their faithfulness. The gospel that saves also calls those saved to turn from the former pattern of life. 1Th 4:6 no one should ever violate or exploit his brother… that those who practice such things The warning concerns those whose settled, unrepentant practice is characterized by these sins. It does not deny forgiveness for the repentant believer, but it rejects the claim that a person may persist in the works of the flesh while remaining unchanged. Jhn 8:34 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,… will not inherit the kingdom of God. Those who remain in such a life show that they do not belong to God’s kingdom and will not receive its promised inheritance. God’s kingdom belongs to those who are made new through Christ and walk in obedience to Him. 1Co 6:9-10 Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral… But the fruit of the Spirit is The Holy Spirit produces a unified pattern of godly character in those who belong to Christ. Unlike the works of the flesh, which arise from fallen human nature, this fruit comes from the Spirit’s abiding work and grows as believers walk in obedience to God. Jhn 15:4-5 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you… love, Love stands first because it governs the rest. It is self-giving devotion to God and sincere concern for others, reflecting the love God has shown in giving His Son. Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.… joy, Joy is settled gladness rooted in salvation and confidence in God’s care. It remains present even in hardship because it rests on the believer’s hope in Christ rather than changing circumstances. Jhn 15:11 I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you… peace, Peace includes reconciliation with God through faith and the inward security that follows. It also shapes relationships, leading believers to pursue harmony rather than conflict. Jhn 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.… patience, Patience endures suffering, delay, and provocation without yielding to resentment. It reflects God’s forbearance and enables believers to bear with one another in humility. Eph 4:2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience,… kindness, Kindness is compassionate, gracious conduct toward others. It is shown in words and actions that seek another person’s good rather than personal advantage. Eph 4:32 Be kind and tenderhearted to one another,… goodness, Goodness is moral uprightness expressed through active generosity and righteous living. It rejects evil and seeks what honors God. Rom 15:14 I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves… faithfulness, Faithfulness is steadfast loyalty, reliability, and perseverance. It reflects God’s unchanging character and marks those who remain devoted to Christ in every duty and trial. 1Co 4:2 Now it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. gentleness, Gentleness is strength governed by humility, not weakness or passivity. Though often despised in the Greco-Roman world, it marked Jesus’ character and is necessary for humility, patience, and peace among believers. It also governs the restoration of those caught in sin, preventing correction from becoming harsh or self-righteous. Mat 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me… and self-control. Self-control submits desires, words, and actions to God’s will. Paul’s world valued discipline, especially among athletes and philosophers, yet the Spirit produces a deeper mastery that resists sinful impulses and preserves moral integrity. Without it, a person is vulnerable like an undefended city. 1Co 9:25 Everyone who competes in the games trains… Against such things there is no law. No law condemns conduct shaped by the Spirit’s fruit. These qualities fulfill the righteous purpose of God’s law, while the Spirit frees believers from sin’s power and enables lives that accord with God’s will. 1Ti 1:9 We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous,… Those who belong to Christ Jesus Believers are identified by their union with Christ and their allegiance to Him. They no longer belong to the old life ruled by sin but have received a new identity through His death and resurrection. 1Co 3:23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. have crucified the flesh Christ’s death marks a decisive break with the sinful nature. The flesh has been condemned and rejected as the ruling power in the believer’s life, though its influence must still be resisted through obedience to the Spirit. Rom 6:6 We know that our old self was crucified with Him… with its passions and desires. Sinful cravings, impulses, and self-centered ambitions are included in the flesh that has been put to death. Christians are therefore called to reject desires opposed to God and live in keeping with the life the Spirit produces. 1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,… Since we live by the Spirit, Believers have received new life through the Holy Spirit by faith in Christ. The Spirit’s presence marks their belonging to God and sets them free from the rule of the sinful nature. 2Co 3:6 And He has qualified us as ministers of a new covenant,… let us walk in step with the Spirit. Their daily conduct should therefore conform to the life the Spirit has given, expressed in obedience to God, love for others, and the fruit of the Spirit. Rom 8:4 so that the righteous standard of the law… Let us not become conceited, Paul warns believers against vain self-importance, which breeds division and undermines humility. In a culture shaped by competition for honor and status, Christians were not to measure their worth against one another or seek recognition within the church. Php 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride,… provoking A conceited spirit often leads people to challenge, irritate, or compete with others. Such behavior could intensify disputes over the Law, leadership, and spiritual standing among the Galatians, threatening the unity produced by the Spirit. Eph 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath… and envying one another. Envy resents the gifts, position, or blessings of others and turns fellow believers into rivals. Paul calls the church away from comparison and resentment, since both provoking and envy arise from the sinful desires that believers are to reject. Jas 3:16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist,… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
