Jos 19:4 Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah, Hormah, Hormah stood in the Negev and was associated with Israel’s conflict against the Canaanites during the wilderness period, when the city was devoted to destruction. Its name means “destruction” or “devotion to destruction.” Jos 15:30 Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah, Ziklag, Ziklag later became known as David’s refuge while he fled from Saul. Given to him by Achish of Gath, it was raided and burned by the Amalekites before David recovered the captives and defeated the raiders. Jos 15:31 Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah, Beth-marcaboth, A Simeonite town in the southern portion of Israel’s land; Beth-marcaboth means “house of chariots,” likely associated with the care, storage, or use of chariots. Jos 19:5 Ziklag, Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susah, Hazar-susim, This settlement’s connection with horses suggests the value of livestock and transport in the region. 1Ki 4:26 Solomon had 4,000 stalls for his chariot horses… Beth-biri, Beth-biri, meaning “house of my creation” or “house of my well,” stood among the towns and villages assigned to Simeon within Judah’s larger territory. Jos 19:6 Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen—thirteen cities,… and Shaaraim. These communities, including Shaaraim, meaning “two gates,” helped establish Simeon’s presence in the south and provided settled places for the tribe’s families. Jos 15:36 Shaaraim, Adithaim, and Gederah (or Gederothaim)… These were their cities until the reign of David. The record marks the period before David’s reign, when later changes in Israel’s administration and territorial arrangements affected these older tribal settlements. 2Sa 5:3-5 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron… And their villages were Etam, Etam, meaning “lair of wild beasts,” was one of the smaller Simeonite settlements located within Judah’s territory, reflecting Simeon’s scattered inheritance among the towns of the south. Jdg 15:8 And he struck them ruthlessly with a great slaughter,… Ain, Ain, meaning “spring” or “fountain,” provided access to water, supporting households, livestock, and cultivation in a region where dependable springs were vital. Jos 19:7 Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan—four cities… Rimmon, Rimmon, meaning “pomegranate,” belonged to the same cluster of Simeonite villages and likely served the surrounding agricultural population. Jos 15:32 Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon—twenty-nine cities in all… Tochen, Tochen is little mentioned elsewhere, but its inclusion preserves the record of Simeon’s complete inheritance. Its name may mean “measured” or “balanced.” Jos 19:1-6 The second lot came out for the clans of the tribe… and Ashan— Ashan, meaning “smoke” or “cloud,” was another established Simeonite community within the lands assigned among Judah’s towns. Jos 15:42 Libnah, Ether, Ashan, five towns— These five villages formed part of the settled territory occupied by the descendants of Simeon. Jos 19:8-9 and all the villages surrounding these cities… and all their surrounding villages as far as Baal. Simeon’s inheritance included the villages connected to its principal towns, extending to Baal, likely Baalath-beer in the Negev. These communities lay within Judah’s larger allotment, where Simeon received its portion because Judah’s territory was more than the tribe required. Jos 19:8 and all the villages surrounding these cities… These were their settlements, The record preserves the established homes and boundaries of the Simeonite clans, confirming their place in the land God allotted to Israel. Jos 19:9 The inheritance of the Simeonites was taken… and they kept a genealogical record: Their genealogies safeguarded tribal identity, family inheritance, and the rightful order of the clans within Israel. 1Ch 9:1 So all Israel was recorded in the genealogies… Meshobab, Meshobab, whose name means “restorer” or “one who returns,” appears among the leading men of Simeon during a period when the tribe sought additional pastureland and security for its families. His inclusion preserves the record of Simeon’s continued identity while living within the territory assigned to Judah. Num 26:12-14 These were the descendants of Simeon by their clans:… Jamlech, Jamlech, whose name means “he will reign” or “whom God makes king,” was one of the Simeonite leaders associated with the expansion of the tribe’s settlements. Though Simeon held no separate kingdom or major political influence, its families remained active in the southern regions of Israel. 2Ch 15:9 And he assembled all Judah and Benjamin, … Joshah son of Amaziah, Joshah, whose name means “Jehovah gives,” belonged to the same group of Simeonite leaders. His identification through Amaziah, meaning “strength of the Lord,” reflects the importance of family lines in establishing the inheritance, responsibilities, and history of the tribe. 2Ch 25:1-4 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king,… Joel, Joel, whose name means “Yahweh is God,” was a leader among the descendants of Simeon during the period recorded by the Chronicler. 1Ch 5:4 The descendants of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son… Jehu son of Joshibiah Jehu, meaning “Yahweh is He,” son of Joshibiah belonged to the Simeonite family line and should not be confused with Jehu, king of Israel. 2Ki 9:2-3 When you arrive, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat,… (son of Seraiah, son of Asiel), Jehoshaphat was the son of Seraiah and the grandson of Asiel. 1Ch 6:14-15 Azariah was the father of Seraiah, and Seraiah… Elioenai, Elioenai, whose name means “My eyes are toward God” or “God is my eyes,” was one of the Simeonite leaders whose families had grown in number. 1Ch 3:23 The sons of Neariah: Elioenai, Hizkiah… Jaakobah, Jaakobah, whose name is uncertain but may be related to Jacob, meaning “supplanter” or “holder of the heel,” was one of the recognized Simeonite clan leaders who sought pastureland for their flocks. Gen 35:8 Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under… son of Jedaiah, These genealogies established family identity, tribal rights, and continuity within Israel; Jedaiah means “Yahweh has known” or “Yahweh knows.” 1Ch 24:7 The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah, son of Shimri, The record traces Ziza through successive generations, including Shimri, whose name means “watchful” or “vigilant,” showing that his family held a recognized place among the Simeonite clans. 1Ch 11:45 Jediael son of Shimri and his brother Joha the Tizite, son of Shemaiah). Ziza’s descendants, including Shemaiah, whose name means “heard by Yahweh,” were among those who sought additional pastureland during the reign of Hezekiah, when Simeon expanded into territory near Gedor. 1Ch 15:11 David summoned the priests Zadok and Abiathar… These men listed by name “These men listed by name” identifies recognized leaders of the Simeonite clans. Their recorded genealogy affirmed their tribal identity and covenant standing within Israel. Num 1:17 So Moses and Aaron took these men designated by name… were the leaders of their clans. As heads of their families, they bore responsibility for directing their households and representing them in tribal affairs. Num 1:16 These men were appointed from the congregation;… Their families increased greatly, Their families had increased greatly, outgrowing the limits of their inherited territory. Exo 1:7 but the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied;… and they journeyed to the entrance of Gedor, The descendants of Simeon moved beyond their established territory because their population and herds required additional land. Gedor lay in the region associated with Judah’s southern hill country, where access to open land and water would have been important for a growing pastoral community. Jos 15:58 Halhul, Beth-zur, Gedor, to the east side of the valley, They explored a specific valley district suitable for settlement. Its eastern side offered land that could support grazing and provide room for families, flocks, and herds. Gen 13:10-12 And Lot looked out and saw the whole plain… in search of pasture for their flocks. The Simeonites depended on livestock and needed reliable grazing land. Their search reflects the practical pressures facing the tribe as it sought to establish a secure place within the inheritance God had given Israel. Gen 47:3-4 “What is your occupation?” Pharaoh asked… There they found rich, good pasture, The area provided abundant grazing land, making it well suited for Simeon’s flocks and herds. Ezk 34:14 I will feed them in good pasture, and the lofty mountains… and the land was spacious, peaceful, and quiet; Its size and security offered the tribe room to settle without immediate threat or conflict. Exo 3:8 I have come down to rescue them from the hand of Egyptians… for some Hamites had lived there formerly. Earlier inhabitants descended from Ham had occupied the region before the Simeonites drove them out and took possession of it. Gen 10:6-20 The sons of Ham: Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.… These who were noted by name These men, who were noted by name, were leaders from the tribe of Simeon whose families sought additional land for their growing herds. Their tribe, whose inheritance lay within Judah, had continued to seek room for its people and flocks. Num 1:23 those registered to the tribe of Simeon numbered 59,300. led by Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, Four men of the family of Ishi, meaning “my husband” or “my salvation,” directed the group. Their leadership reflects the tribal and family structure through which such journeys, conflicts, and settlements were undertaken. 1Ch 27:16 These officers were in charge of the tribes of Israel:… went to Mount Seir They traveled into the mountainous land south of Judah, a region associated with Edom and inhabited in part by surviving Amalekites. The Simeonites defeated those remaining there and settled in the area. Gen 36:8-9 So Esau (that is, Edom) settled in the area of Mount Seir.… and struck down the remnant of the Amalekites who had escaped. The Amalekites had long opposed Israel and had been marked for judgment because of their repeated hostility toward God’s people. Those defeated by the Simeonites were survivors of earlier conflicts who had escaped destruction. Their removal completed the Simeonite campaign in the region of Mount Seir. 1Sa 15:2-3 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed… And they have lived there to this day. The Simeonites settled in the land they had taken, establishing a lasting home in territory once held by the Amalekite remnant. Their occupation of the area preserved Simeon’s place within Israel despite the tribe’s limited inheritance in the south.
