The Prayer of the Afflicted

A prayer of one who is afflicted,

This psalm is a personal lament of one overwhelmed by severe distress. The sufferer’s affliction may include physical weakness, sorrow, isolation, and spiritual anguish, while also reflecting the hardships endured by God’s people.

Jas 5:13 Is any one of you suffering? He should pray.…
Psa 34:17-18 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears;…

when he grows faint

“When he grows faint” portrays strength failing under prolonged trouble. With no confidence in himself, the psalmist turns wholly to God.

Psa 61:2 From the ends of the earth I call out to You…
Psa 143:4 My spirit grows faint within me; my heart is dismayed…

and pours out his lament before the LORD.

He brings his grief openly before the covenant God, refusing to hide his pain or seek relief apart from Him.

1Sa 1:15 “No, my lord,” Hannah replied. “I am a woman troubled…
Lam 2:19 Arise, cry out in the night from the first watch…

Hear my prayer, O LORD;

The psalmist begins with a direct appeal for God’s attention. He trusts that the LORD knows his condition and remains faithful to His people.

Psa 143:1 A Psalm of David. O LORD, hear my prayer.…
Psa 86:6 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and attend to my plea for mercy.

let my cry for help come before You.

He asks God to receive his plea and act in mercy, confident that no distress is beyond the Lord’s sight or power.

Psa 119:169 May my cry come before You, O LORD; give me understanding…
Psa 88:2 May my prayer come before You; incline Your ear to my cry.

Do not hide Your face from me in my day of distress.

The psalmist pleads for God’s continued presence amid overwhelming suffering. God’s hidden face conveys the anguish of feeling abandoned when help is most needed.

Psa 69:17 Hide not Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress.…
Psa 27:9 Hide not Your face from me, nor turn away Your servant in anger.…
Psa 13:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD?…

Incline Your ear to me;

He asks the Lord to hear him personally and mercifully, confident that God remains attentive to the cries of His afflicted people.

Psa 17:6 I call on You, O God, for You will answer me.…
Psa 86:1 A prayer of David. Incline Your ear, O LORD, and answer me,…
Psa 71:2 In Your justice, rescue and deliver me;…

answer me quickly when I call.

The danger is urgent, and he seeks immediate deliverance from the Lord, who alone can sustain him in his distress.

Psa 143:7 Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails.…
Psa 70:5 But I am poor and needy; hurry to me, O God.…
Psa 40:13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; hurry, O LORD…

For my days vanish like smoke,

The psalmist laments that his days disappear like smoke, quickly fading under the burden of prolonged suffering. His words emphasize both the frailty of human life and the crushing weight of his present distress.

Psa 37:20 But the wicked and enemies of the LORD will perish…
Jas 4:14 You do not even know what will happen tomorrow!…
Psa 39:5 You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths,…

and my bones burn like glowing embers.

Suffering has reached his innermost being, draining the strength once associated with healthy bones. The image portrays bodily weakness, grief, and anguish consuming him as fire consumes embers.

Job 30:30 My skin grows black and peels, and my bones burn with fever.
Lam 1:13 He sent fire from on high, and it overpowered my bones.…
Jer 20:9 “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name…”…

My heart is afflicted,

The psalmist describes inward anguish that has drained his strength and hope. His suffering is not merely physical; it reaches the center of his thoughts, emotions, and worship as he waits for God to hear his cry.

Psa 109:22 For I am poor and needy; my heart is wounded within me.
Psa 55:4 My heart pounds within me, and the terrors of death…
Psa 38:8 I am numb and badly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.

and withered like grass;

Like grass scorched by the sun and deprived of moisture, he feels frail and near exhaustion. The image reflects the brevity and weakness of human life apart from the Lord’s sustaining care.

Psa 90:5-6 You sweep them away in their sleep; they are like…
Psa 103:15-16 As for man, his days are like grass—he blooms…
Isa 40:7-8 The grass withers and the flowers fall when…

I even forget to eat my bread.

Grief has become so consuming that he neglects ordinary nourishment. Bread, the daily provision of life, no longer holds his attention as sorrow and prayer occupy his mind.

1Sa 1:7-8 And this went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up…
Job 3:24 I sigh when food is put before me, and…
Job 33:20 so that he detests his bread, and his soul loathes…

Through my loud groaning

The psalmist’s suffering is so severe that his cries of anguish are continual. His grief before God is not hidden or restrained, but rises from prolonged affliction and helplessness.

Job 3:24 I sigh when food is put before me, and…
Psa 38:8 I am numb and badly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.
Psa 6:6 I am weary from groaning; all night I flood…

my skin hangs on my bones.

His distress has weakened him physically, leaving him gaunt and exhausted. The outward condition reflects the depth of his inward sorrow as he waits for God to restore him.

Job 19:20 My skin and flesh cling to my bones; I have escaped…
Lam 4:8 But now their appearance is blacker than soot;…
Job 33:21 His flesh wastes away from sight, and his hidden bones…

I am like a desert owl,

The psalmist pictures himself alone in a barren wilderness, separated from help, fellowship, and comfort. The desert, marked by scarcity and danger, reflects the depth of his affliction and the sense that God’s people have been brought low.

Isa 34:11 The desert owl and screech owl will possess it,…
Zep 2:14 Herds will lie down in her midst, creatures of every kind.…
Mic 1:8 Because of this I will lament and wail; I will walk barefoot…

like an owl among the ruins.

Ruined cities and abandoned buildings were places of silence, death, and desolation. The image conveys mourning amid devastation, as though the psalmist remains among the wreckage of judgment and loss. His isolation reflects both personal suffering and the afflicted condition of Jerusalem.

Isa 13:21 But desert creatures will lie down there,…
Jer 51:37 Babylon will become a heap of rubble, a haunt for jackals…
Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…

I lie awake;

The afflicted psalmist cannot sleep under the weight of sorrow, reproach, and uncertainty. His wakefulness reflects a prolonged season of distress as he waits for the Lord to hear his prayer and act on behalf of Zion.

Psa 119:148 My eyes anticipate the watches of night,…
Psa 77:4 You have kept my eyes from closing; I am too troubled…
Job 7:4 When I lie down I think: ‘When will I get up?’…

I am like a lone bird on a housetop.

Flat rooftops were exposed, elevated places where a solitary bird would be visible and without shelter. The image portrays the psalmist as isolated from human comfort and vulnerable before his enemies, yet still looking to God for mercy and restoration.

Pro 27:8 Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man…
Pro 21:9 Better to live on a corner of the roof…
Psa 55:6 I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!…

All day long my enemies taunt me;

The psalmist endures unrelenting contempt, likely amid national devastation and personal affliction. Such scorn intensified the suffering of God’s people during periods of oppression, including exile, when hostile nations mocked their trust in the Lord.

Psa 42:10 Like the crushing of my bones, my enemies taunt me……
Jer 20:7 You have deceived me, O LORD, and I was deceived.…
Lam 3:14 I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song…

they ridicule me and curse me.

His enemies seek to shame and break him through continual verbal attacks. Their cruelty reflects the recurring biblical pattern of the righteous suffering at the hands of those who reject God, while the psalmist continues to look to the Lord for deliverance and vindication.

1Sa 17:43 “Am I a dog,” he said to David, “that you come at me”…
2Sa 16:5-8 As King David approached Bahurim, a man from the house…
Job 30:1 “But now they mock me, men younger than I am”…

For I have eaten ashes like bread

Ashes, commonly associated with mourning, portray grief so consuming that sorrow has taken the place of ordinary nourishment. The psalmist describes a condition of humiliation, weakness, and affliction before God, with every part of life marked by loss.

Isa 44:20 He feeds on ashes. His deluded heart has led him astray…
Job 42:6 Therefore I despise myself, and I repent in dust and ashes.”
Job 2:8 And Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself…

and mixed my drink with tears

His weeping is constant, turning even water into a reminder of suffering. Food and drink, ordinarily signs of God’s sustaining care, are overshadowed by anguish as he bears the weight of personal distress and Jerusalem’s desolation.

Psa 80:5 You fed them with the bread of tears and made them drink…
Psa 42:3 My tears have been my food both day and night,…
Lam 2:11 My eyes fail from weeping; I am churning within.…

because of Your indignation and wrath,

The psalmist understands his affliction under God’s righteous judgment against sin. Israel’s history showed that persistent rebellion and idolatry brought divine discipline, culminating in the Babylonian exile. Yet God’s wrath does not cancel His covenant purposes; in Christ, judgment against sin was borne fully so that those who trust Him are reconciled to God.

Job 16:9 His anger has torn me and opposed me; He gnashes His teeth…
Psa 88:7 Your wrath weighs heavily upon me; all Your waves…
Psa 38:1-3 A Psalm of David, for remembrance. O LORD, do not rebuke me…

for You have picked me up and cast me aside.

His distress feels like abandonment and removal from security, much as Israel was driven from the land into captivity. The language captures the suffering of one who knows God has allowed his condition. Christ also endured rejection and forsakenness in His suffering, but God vindicated Him through the resurrection and exaltation.

Job 30:22-23 You snatch me up into the wind and drive me…
Psa 75:6-7 For exaltation comes neither from east nor west,…
Lam 2:1 How the Lord has covered the Daughter of Zion…

My days are like lengthening shadows,

The psalmist sees his life nearing its close, like evening shadows stretching toward night. Affliction has made his weakness and mortality especially vivid.

Psa 109:23 I am fading away like a lengthening shadow;…
Psa 144:4 Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow.
1Ch 29:15 For we are foreigners and strangers in Your presence,…

and I wither away like grass.

Human strength fades quickly under suffering and time, as grass dries beneath the heat. Against this frailty, the psalm turns to the enduring Lord, whose purposes and faithfulness do not pass away.

Isa 40:7-8 The grass withers and the flowers fall when…
1Pe 1:24 All flesh is like grass, and all its glory…
Psa 103:15-16 As for man, his days are like grass—he blooms…

But You, O LORD,

Human life and earthly powers pass away, but Yahweh remains. Israel’s covenant God is unchanged by suffering, exile, or the rise and fall of nations.

Psa 3:3 But You, O LORD, are a shield around me,…
Psa 90:1 A prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, You have been…
Isa 40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD…

sit enthroned forever;

Though Jerusalem lay in ruins, God still ruled as King. His authority was not diminished by the destruction of the city or the apparent success of Israel’s enemies.

Psa 9:7 But the LORD abides forever; He has established His throne…
Psa 29:10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD…
Psa 45:6 Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever,…

Your renown endures to all generations.

God’s name and mighty works would remain known among His people and the nations. His faithfulness to His promises ensures that every generation has reason to remember Him.

Psa 135:13 Your name, O LORD, endures forever, Your renown, O LORD…
Psa 145:13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion…
Exo 3:15 God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites,…

You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,

God will act on behalf of Jerusalem and His covenant people. Zion, the city of David and site of the Temple, represented Israel’s worship, national life, and promised restoration. His compassion points to His mercy toward a people who had endured judgment and desolation.

Isa 30:18-19 Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you;…
Isa 51:3 For the LORD will comfort Zion and will look with compassion…
Zec 1:17 Proclaim further that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

for it is time to show her favor—

After the exile and the ruin of Jerusalem, God’s favor meant the return of His people, the rebuilding of the city, and the restoration of worship. Their future depended not on their strength but on God’s faithful mercy.

Isa 49:8 This is what the LORD says: “In the time of favor…
Isa 61:2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor…
Psa 85:1-2 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.…

the appointed time has come.

The restoration would occur according to God’s fixed purpose. What He had promised through the prophets would be fulfilled in His time, demonstrating that His judgment was not the end of His covenant promises.

Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;…
Psa 75:2 “When I choose a time, I will judge fairly.
Gal 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son,…

For Your servants delight in her stones

God’s people cherished Jerusalem even in its ruined condition because it was the city He had chosen for His name and the former site of the temple. Its stones represented the city, its walls, and the place of worship that had been destroyed during the Babylonian conquest. Their affection showed a continuing hope that Zion would be rebuilt and restored.

Isa 54:11 “O afflicted city, lashed by storms, without solace,…
Zec 1:16 Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I will return……
Hag 1:8 Go up into the hills, bring down lumber,…

and take pity on her dust.

The dust pictured Jerusalem’s devastation after its destruction and abandonment. The servants of God mourned not only for what had been lost but also desired the city’s renewal. Their concern anticipated the return from exile and the rebuilding of Jerusalem under leaders such as Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah, in keeping with God’s covenant promise to restore His people.

Isa 52:2 Shake off your dust! Rise up and sit on your throne…
Neh 1:3-4 And they told me, “The remnant who survived the exile…
Isa 61:4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins; they will restore…

So the nations will fear the name of the LORD,

God’s restoration of Zion will display His faithfulness so clearly that Gentile nations will recognize His authority. Surrounded by peoples devoted to false gods, Israel looked forward to the day when the LORD’s power over history and His covenant people would be evident beyond its borders.

Isa 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD where the sun sets…
Rev 15:4 Who will not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name?…
Mal 1:11 For My name will be great among the nations,…

and all the kings of the earth will fear Your glory.

Earthly rulers, despite their wealth and military strength, will be subject to the Lord’s majesty. His glory, revealed in His acts of judgment, deliverance, and restoration, will leave no rival authority untouched.

Psa 72:11 May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.
Psa 76:12 He breaks the spirits of princes; He is feared…
Php 2:10-11 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,…

For the LORD will rebuild Zion;

Zion, the city of Jerusalem, would be restored after the devastation of exile. Its rebuilding demonstrated the LORD’s faithfulness to His covenant people and His commitment to establish worship again in the place He had chosen. The restored city also anticipated the greater kingdom of Christ, who brings lasting redemption and gathers His people to God.

Psa 69:35 For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah…
Psa 147:2 The LORD builds up Jerusalem; He gathers the exiles…
Isa 61:4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins; they will restore…

He has appeared in His glory.

The LORD’s intervention in restoring Zion would plainly reveal His power, faithfulness, and royal presence. What appeared impossible after Jerusalem’s destruction would show that Israel’s future depended on God rather than human strength. The rebuilding of Zion pointed beyond its immediate historical fulfillment to the day when Christ’s glory will be openly displayed and God will dwell with His people forever.

Num 14:10 But the whole congregation threatened to stone Joshua…
Exo 16:10 And as Aaron was speaking to the whole congregation…
Ezk 43:4-5 and the glory of the LORD entered the temple…

He will turn toward the prayer of the destitute;

God hears those brought low by suffering, poverty, exile, or affliction. Israel’s periods of national distress, including the Babylonian exile, revealed that earthly security could vanish, yet the Lord had not abandoned His covenant people. He gives attention to those with no human source of help and receives their cries with compassion.

Psa 69:33 For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise…
Psa 34:6 This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; …
Isa 41:17 The poor and needy seek water, but there is none;…

He will not despise their prayer.

The Lord does not reject the humble because of their weakness or low standing. He values sincere prayer from those who depend upon Him, unlike human societies that often honor wealth and power. His care for the afflicted points to the ministry of Christ, who came to bring hope to the poor, the brokenhearted, and all who seek God in humility.

Psa 22:24 For He has not despised or detested the torment…
Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;…
Psa 66:19-20 But God has surely heard; He has attended…

Let this be written for the generation to come,

The psalmist calls for God’s acts of mercy and deliverance to be preserved in writing. Written testimony would carry the account beyond those who witnessed Jerusalem’s distress and restoration, instructing later generations in the Lord’s faithfulness.

Psa 78:4 We will not hide them from their children…
Deu 31:19 Now therefore, write down for yourselves this song…
Hab 2:2 Then the LORD answered me: “Write down this vision…

so that a people not yet created

God’s purposes extend beyond the present generation. Those yet unborn would inherit the record of His dealings with His people and learn that He remains faithful to His covenant promises.

Psa 78:6 that the coming generation would know them…
Psa 22:31 They will come and proclaim His righteousness…
Rom 4:17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations”…

may praise the LORD.

The recorded history of God’s work is meant to lead future generations to worship Him. His deliverance of Zion would stand as evidence of His power, compassion, and rule over all generations.

Psa 145:4 One generation will commend Your works to the next,…
Psa 79:13 Then we Your people, the sheep of Your pasture…
Isa 43:21 The people I formed for Myself will declare My praise.

For He looked down from the heights of His sanctuary;

God viewed the earth from His holy dwelling in heaven, ruling over all creation while remaining fully aware of human need and suffering. His sanctuary is not limited to an earthly temple but reflects His heavenly throne and sovereign authority.

The Lord’s attention is deliberate and personal. Though exalted above the world, He sees the condition of people and acts according to His purposes, especially for those afflicted and in need of deliverance.

to hear a prisoner’s groaning,

God hears those crushed by oppression, captivity, and sorrow. Israel’s bondage in Egypt and the later sufferings of exiles showed that no afflicted people are beyond His notice. The groaning of prisoners reflects the helplessness of those unable to free themselves and their need for God’s intervention.

Psa 79:11 May the groans of the captives reach You;…
Psa 107:10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,…

to release those condemned to death,

God has power to save those facing certain destruction. His deliverance of captives and preservation of His people reveal His justice and mercy. Ultimately, this points to Christ’s work in delivering sinners from the judgment and death they deserve, granting life to those who trust in Him.

Psa 9:11 Sing praises to the LORD, who dwells in Zion;…

and praise Him

Praise rises from those who recognize the LORD’s mercy and power. The deliverance described in the psalm would lead not merely to private gratitude but to public worship among God’s gathered people.

Psa 22:23 You who fear the LORD, praise Him! All descendants of Jacob…
Psa 113:1 Hallelujah! Give praise, O servants of the LORD…
Psa 150:6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Hallelujah!

in Jerusalem,

Jerusalem was the seat of David’s throne and the location of the temple built by Solomon. Its restoration would testify that the LORD had not abandoned His people and would fulfill His purposes through the city He had chosen.

Psa 147:12 Exalt the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion!
Psa 135:21 Blessed be the LORD from Zion—He who dwells in Jerusalem.…

The psalm looks ahead to a day when nations once divided by language, power, and idolatry will be gathered together under God’s rule. What earthly rulers could not accomplish through conquest or alliance, the Lord will bring about through His kingdom.

He has broken my strength on the way;

The afflicted psalmist sees his suffering as coming under God’s sovereign hand. His strength has failed during the course of life, leaving him weakened before he has reached the end of his journey. Like Job, he recognizes that trials can strip away human ability and expose dependence on God.

Psa 71:9 Do not discard me in my old age; do not forsake me…
Isa 57:10 You are wearied by your many journeys, but you did not say…

He has cut short my days.

The psalmist fears that his affliction will lead to an early death. His words reflect the brevity and uncertainty of human life, which remains in God’s hands. Yet the surrounding psalm contrasts his frailty with the enduring reign and unchanging years of the Lord.

In the beginning

God existed before all created things and brought time, matter, and life into being by His will. Creation rests on His eternal nature rather than on chance or competing powers.

You laid the foundations of the earth,

and the heavens are the work of Your hands.

The vast heavens, with all their order and beauty, were made by God and belong to Him. The Creator who formed earth and heaven rules over them and remains distinct from all He has made.

The heavens and earth belong to the created order and will not endure forever in their present form. God existed before creation and remains unchanged when the present universe passes away. His purposes are not limited by the life of the world He made.

Creation bears the effects of time and decay. Like clothing that eventually becomes unusable, the present heavens and earth are temporary and subject to God’s appointed end.

Isa 51:6 But My salvation will last forever, and My righteousness……

God will actively bring the old creation to its conclusion and replace it according to His will. The change is not beyond His control but part of His sovereign plan for renewal.

The children of Your servants will dwell securely,

Though the psalm begins with personal affliction and the desolation of Zion, it ends with confidence in God’s enduring faithfulness. Those who belong to Him will not be abandoned, and their families will have a secure place under His care.
