Jeremiah 18
Berean Study Bible

The Potter and the Clay

This is the word

A new revelation introduces the message that follows, carrying God’s authority over Judah’s present condition and future.

Hos 1:1 This is the word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri…
Jon 1:1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai…
Mic 1:1 This is the word of the LORD that came to Micah…

that came to Jeremiah

Jeremiah ministered during Judah’s final years before the Babylonian exile, confronting persistent idolatry, injustice, and refusal to heed God’s warnings. He was sent to call the nation back from its rebellion and to announce both judgment and the possibility of mercy.

Jer 1:2 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in the thirteenth year…
Jer 25:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah concerning…
Jer 32:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…

from the LORD:

The message came from Israel’s covenant God, who remained faithful to His purposes despite Judah’s unfaithfulness. What follows at the potter’s house reveals His sovereign right to judge, reshape, or preserve a people according to their response to Him.

Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…
1Ki 17:2 Then a revelation from the LORD came to Elijah:
2Sa 7:4 But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying,

“Go down at once to the potter’s house,

God directed Jeremiah to leave his present work and go immediately to a familiar place of labor in Jerusalem. The potter’s work would provide a visible illustration of God’s authority over Israel. As clay is shaped on the wheel according to the potter’s purpose, so the Lord has the right to judge, preserve, or remake the nation.

Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay,…
Rom 9:21 Does not the potter have the right to make…
Isa 29:16 Shall what is formed say to him who formed it…

and there I will give you My message.”

Jeremiah would receive God’s revelation while observing the potter at work. The setting prepared him to understand the message that followed: Israel’s future was not fixed apart from its response to God, and the Lord remained free to carry out judgment or restoration according to His righteous purposes.

Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……
Ezk 3:4 Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now…

So I went down to the potter’s house

Jeremiah left Jerusalem for the workshop, likely located in a lower part of the city or valley. There the Lord used an ordinary craftsman’s work to reveal His authority over Judah. The potter’s house provided a visible picture of God’s power to form, judge, and restore His covenant people according to their response to His word.

Jer 19:1-2 This is what the LORD says: “Go and buy a clay jar…
Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay,…

and saw him working at the wheel.

The potter shaped clay on a revolving wheel, pressing and forming it while it remained pliable. Israel, though marred by sin and rebellion, was not beyond God’s power to reshape. Yet the illustration also warned that the nation’s future depended on whether it would turn from evil or persist in disobedience.

Rom 9:20-21 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?…
Job 10:9 Please remember that You molded me like clay.…
Isa 29:16 Shall what is formed say to him who formed it…

But the vessel that he was shaping from the clay

Jeremiah watched a potter at work, using a familiar craft to portray God’s authority over Israel. As the potter controls the clay on the wheel, the Lord has rightful power over the nation He formed and sustained.

Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay,…
Rom 9:20-21 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?…
Job 10:9 Please remember that You molded me like clay.…

became flawed in his hand;

The defect pictured Israel’s corruption through idolatry, injustice, and refusal to obey God. The failure lay not with the potter but with the clay, reflecting the nation’s persistent rebellion during Jeremiah’s ministry.

Jer 19:11 this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I will shatter…
Isa 30:14 It will break in pieces like a potter’s jar…
Psa 31:12 I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind.…

so he formed it into another vessel,

Rather than casting the clay aside, the potter reworked it. God’s announced judgment on Judah was not meaningless destruction; it included the possibility of repentance, discipline, and restoration according to His purpose.

Rom 9:22-23 What if God, intending to show His wrath…
2Ti 2:20-21 A large house contains not only vessels of gold and silver……
2Co 4:7 Now we have this treasure in jars of clay…

as it seemed best for him to do.

The potter determined the vessel’s final form, illustrating God’s sovereign freedom to deal with nations in righteousness. Judah could not claim control over its destiny, yet God’s warnings left room for a changed outcome if the people turned from their sin.

Psa 115:3 Our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases.
Eph 1:11 In Him we were also chosen as God’s own,…
Dan 4:35 All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing…

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

God again spoke directly to Jeremiah, directing the prophet to explain the meaning of the potter’s work. Jeremiah’s message did not arise from personal reflection but from the LORD’s revealed purpose. The coming lesson would show that God has rightful authority over Israel and the nations, shaping their history according to His righteous will.

Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
1Ki 17:2 Then a revelation from the LORD came to Elijah:
2Ki 20:4 Before Isaiah had left the middle courtyard,…

“O house of Israel, declares the LORD,

God addresses His covenant people directly as Jeremiah warns Judah in the years before Jerusalem’s fall. Their national identity did not exempt them from judgment; it made their rebellion against the Lord more serious.

Ezk 36:22 Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is…
Exo 19:5-6 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…
Deu 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.…

can I not treat you as this potter treats his clay?

Having watched the potter remake a flawed vessel, Jeremiah declares that God has the right and power to deal with Israel according to its response to Him. The Lord who formed the nation can also humble, discipline, or restore it.

Rom 9:20-21 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?…
Isa 45:9 Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker—one clay pot…
Job 10:9 Please remember that You molded me like clay.…

Just like clay in the potter’s hand,

The clay does not determine the potter’s design. Israel’s future was not fixed by ancestry, political strength, or past privilege, but remained subject to God’s righteous purpose.

Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay,…
Isa 29:16 Shall what is formed say to him who formed it…
Job 33:6 I am just like you before God; I was also formed from clay.

so are you in My hand,

God’s rule over Israel included both judgment and mercy. Though the nation faced the consequences of persistent sin, it remained under His authority and could be reshaped through repentance.

Isa 43:13 Even from eternity I am He, and none can deliver…
Deu 32:39 See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me…
Psa 95:7 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture…

O house of Israel.

The repeated address presses the warning upon the whole people. Jerusalem’s coming judgment was not arbitrary; it followed Israel’s refusal to live as the people God had called them to be.

Isa 5:7 For the vineyard of the LORD of Hosts is the house of Israel…
Ezk 37:11-12 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones”…
Hos 1:10 Yet the number of the Israelites will be like the sand…

At any time

God remains free to act in history according to His righteous purposes, without being limited by human plans or expectations.

Ecc 3:1 To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose…
Psa 115:3 Our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases.
Dan 4:35 All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing…

I might announce

Through Jeremiah, the Lord publicly declares what He intends to do, warning people and rulers before judgment comes.

Jer 1:16 I will pronounce My judgments against them…
Jon 3:4 On the first day of his journey, Jonah set out into the city…
Ezk 33:7-9 As for you, O son of man, I have made you a watchman…

that a nation or kingdom

God governs every people and political power, including Judah and the surrounding empires that shaped its history.

Dan 2:21 He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings…
Dan 4:17 This decision is the decree of the watchers,…
Psa 47:8 God reigns over the nations; God is seated on His throne…

will be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed.

Nations that persist in evil may lose their strength, land, and rule under God’s judgment. Their rise and fall are subject to His authority.

Jer 1:10 See, I have appointed you today over nations and kingdoms…
Jer 31:28 Just as I watched over them to uproot and tear down…
Amo 9:8 Surely the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom……

But if that nation I warned

God’s warnings revealed both His justice and His mercy, giving nations opportunity to respond before judgment fell. Jeremiah’s ministry included warnings to Judah and surrounding peoples during the rise of Babylon.

Jon 3:4 On the first day of his journey, Jonah set out into the city…
Ezk 33:7-9 As for you, O son of man, I have made you a watchman…
Ezk 3:17-19 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house…

turns from its evil,

National repentance required more than regret; it meant abandoning wicked conduct and returning to obedience to God. Nineveh’s response to Jonah showed that even a Gentile nation could avert impending judgment through genuine repentance.

Jon 3:8-10 Furthermore, let both man and beast be covered…
Ezk 18:21-23 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins…
Isa 55:7 Let the wicked man forsake his way; let him return…

then I will relent of the disaster

God’s withholding of judgment does not reflect instability in His character. He consistently judges evil and shows mercy to those who turn from it. The threatened calamity was conditional upon continued rebellion.

Exo 32:14 So the LORD relented from the calamity He had threatened…
2Sa 24:16 But when the angel stretched out his hand…
Jol 2:13-14 So rend your hearts and not your garments,…

I had planned to bring.

The disaster God contemplated was the righteous consequence of sin. For Judah, Babylon’s coming invasion and exile stood as a real warning, yet repentance could still alter the nation’s immediate outcome.

Jer 26:3 Perhaps they will listen and turn—each from his evil way…
2Ki 22:16 this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring calamity…
Jer 19:15 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…

And if at another time

God also speaks of a different course for nations, showing that His dealings correspond to their response to His revealed will.

Jon 3:10 When God saw their actions, He relented from the disaster…
Exo 32:14 So the LORD relented from the calamity He had threatened…
2Ki 20:5 Go back and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people…

I announce

Through Jeremiah, He declares His purpose with full authority.

Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…
Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…
Isa 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times…

that I will build up and establish

He may grant growth, security, and enduring strength rather than judgment.

Jer 31:28 Just as I watched over them to uproot and tear down…
Jer 24:6 I will build them up and not tear them down…
Jer 1:10 See, I have appointed you today over nations and kingdoms…

a nation or kingdom,

His rule extends over every people and government, not Israel alone.

Dan 2:21 He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings…
Dan 4:17 This decision is the decree of the watchers,…
2Ch 20:6 O LORD, God of our fathers, are You not the God who is…

and if it does evil in My sight

God judges nations according to their conduct. Judah’s idolatry, injustice, and refusal to remain faithful to the covenant stood openly before Him.

1Ki 11:6 So Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD;…
2Ki 21:2 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD…
2Ki 17:11 They burned incense on all the high places…

and does not listen to My voice,

The Lord spoke through Jeremiah and other prophets, calling the people to turn from sin and obey His commands. Their refusal was deliberate rebellion, not ignorance.

Deu 13:4 You are to follow the LORD your God and fear Him.…
Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
1Sa 15:19 So why did you not obey the LORD? Why did you rush…

then I will relent of the good I had intended for it.

The promised blessing was conditional upon obedience. If a nation turned to evil, God would withhold the good He had announced, acting consistently with His righteousness and the covenant warnings given to Israel.

Jol 2:14 Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing…
Deu 28:1-2 Now if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God…
2Ch 7:19-20 But if you turn away and forsake the statutes…

Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem

Jeremiah was sent to the southern kingdom in its final years before Babylon’s conquest. Judah’s leaders and people had abandoned the covenant through idolatry, injustice, and reliance on foreign powers. Jerusalem, the nation’s political and religious center, was especially accountable for its influence over the land.

Jer 11:2 Listen to the words of this covenant and tell them…
Zep 1:4 I will stretch out My hand against Judah…
Jer 7:2 “Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD and proclaim…

that this is what the LORD says:

Jeremiah delivered God’s own declaration, not a personal warning. The covenant LORD who had chosen Israel now confronted Judah for its rebellion.

2Ki 22:15 And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD,…
Isa 37:21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…
Ezk 2:4 They are obstinate and stubborn children.…

‘Behold, I am planning a disaster for you and devising a plan against you.

God announced coming judgment in the form of Babylon’s invasion, the destruction of Jerusalem, and exile from the land. This was not arbitrary disaster but the righteous response to generations of persistent sin.

Mic 2:3 Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I am planning against…
Jer 19:3 Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah…
Amo 3:6 If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble?…

Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways,

Judgment was not yet inevitable if the people would repent. Every person was called to abandon the idolatry, violence, dishonesty, and disobedience that had characterized Judah.

Jer 25:5 The prophets told you, ‘Turn now, each of you,…
Ezk 33:11 Say to them: ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Ezk 18:30 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you…

and correct your ways and deeds.’

Repentance required visible change in conduct as well as a return of the heart to God. Judah was to live according to the commands it had received rather than continue in rebellion.

Jer 7:3 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel:…
Zec 1:4 Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets…
Ezk 18:31 Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions…

But they will reply, ‘It is hopeless.

Judah’s response rejects the warning God has given through Jeremiah. They treat repentance as useless and resign themselves to the judgment their sin has invited, though God’s warning itself leaves room for mercy if they turn from evil.

Ezk 37:11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones”…
Job 17:15 where then is my hope? Who can see any hope for me?
Lam 3:18 “My strength has perished, along with my hope…”…

We will follow our own plans,

Rather than submit to the Lord’s purpose for them, the people choose their own desires and policies. Their determination reveals open rebellion against the covenant God who had called them to obedience.

Psa 81:12 So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts…
Isa 53:6 We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned…
Isa 65:2 All day long I have held out My hands to an obstinate people…

and each of us will act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’”

The rebellion is both personal and national. Each person intends to continue in sinful conduct, hardened against correction. Their refusal to change confirms the justice of the coming judgment.

Jer 11:8 Yet they would not obey or incline their ears,…
Deu 29:19 because when such a person hears the words…
2Ch 36:13 He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar…

Therefore this is what the LORD says:

God speaks as the covenant Lord and Judge, announcing His assessment of Judah’s rebellion.

Ezk 5:8-9 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Jer 7:20 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, My anger…
Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…

“Inquire among the nations:

The surrounding peoples are summoned as witnesses because even nations devoted to false gods would recognize the shocking nature of Judah’s conduct.

Jer 2:10 Cross over to the coasts of Cyprus and take a look;…
Isa 34:1 Come near, O nations, to listen; pay attention, O peoples.…
Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years long past…

Who has ever heard things like these?

Judah’s abandonment of the Lord who delivered and sustained her stands out as an extraordinary act of unfaithfulness.

Isa 66:8 Who has heard of such as this? Who has seen such things?…
Deu 4:32 Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other…
Hab 1:5 Look at the nations and observe—be utterly astounded……

Virgin Israel has done a most terrible thing.

Israel, set apart for the Lord as a pure bride, had defiled herself through idolatry and covenant rebellion.

Amo 5:2 Fallen is Virgin Israel, never to rise again.…
Hos 6:10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing:…
Isa 1:4 Alas, O sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity…

Does the snow of Lebanon ever leave its rocky slopes?

Lebanon’s snow-covered heights, especially Mount Hermon, were a familiar and dependable sight to Israel. Their snow supplied moisture and sustained springs, illustrating the order God established in creation. Israel’s abandonment of the Lord was therefore unnatural: what God made to endure remained faithful to its purpose, while His covenant people turned from Him.

Job 38:22-23 Have you entered the storehouses of snow…
Psa 147:15-18 He sends forth His command to the earth;…
Job 37:6-10 For He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’…

Or do its cool waters flowing from a distance ever run dry?

Streams fed by Lebanon’s snow brought clear, refreshing water to regions far from the mountains. Their steady flow contrasts with Judah’s spiritual condition. God had faithfully provided life, protection, and blessing, yet the people rejected Him for idols and false paths.

Psa 104:10-13 He sends forth springs in the valleys; they flow…
Isa 58:11 The LORD will always guide you; He will satisfy you…
Deu 8:7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,…

Yet My people have forgotten Me.

Israel’s refusal to remember the Lord was a willful abandonment of the covenant. Though He had delivered, sustained, and warned them, they gave their loyalty to other gods.

Jer 2:32 Does a maiden forget her jewelry or a bride her wedding sash…
Jer 3:21 A voice is heard on the barren heights,…
Deu 32:18 You ignored the Rock who brought you forth;…

They burn incense to worthless idols

Worship that belonged to the Lord was offered to gods fashioned by human hands and unable to save. Their religious practices continued, but they were directed toward false objects of trust.

Jer 44:8 Why are you provoking Me to anger by the work of your hands…
2Ki 22:17 because they have forsaken Me and burned incense…
Psa 96:5 For all the gods of the nations are idols,…

that make them stumble in their ways,

Idolatry corrupted the nation’s judgment and conduct, drawing them into disobedience and injustice. By rejecting God’s authority, they lost the moral clarity He had given them.

Ezk 14:3 Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts…
Isa 8:14-15 And He will be a sanctuary—but to both houses of Israel…
1Pe 2:8 “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.”…

leaving the ancient roads

The ancient roads were the established way of covenant faithfulness revealed through God’s law and upheld by the faithful generations of Israel.

Jer 6:16 Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths…
Job 22:15-16 Will you stay on the ancient path that wicked men have trod?…
Pro 2:13-15 those who leave the straight paths to walk in the ways…

to walk on rutted bypaths

Judah chose unstable and destructive courses shaped by pagan worship and human preference. These paths led the people farther from the Lord and toward judgment.

Jdg 5:6 In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days…
Psa 125:5 But those who turn to crooked ways the LORD will banish…
Isa 59:8 The way of peace they have not known…

instead of on the highway.

God’s way was clear and secure, marked by obedience and righteousness. Their rejection of that path exposed the depth of their rebellion.

Pro 15:19 The way of the slacker is like a hedge of thorns…
Isa 35:8 And there will be a highway called the Way of Holiness.…
Isa 40:3 A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD…

They have made their land a desolation,

Judah’s persistent idolatry and rebellion brought the covenant judgment God had warned of. The fertile land given to Israel would be left devastated as invading armies destroyed its cities, fields, and homes. Babylon’s conquest of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple made this judgment visible to all.

Jer 25:11 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…
Ezk 35:9 I will make you a perpetual desolation.…

a perpetual object of scorn;

The ruins of Judah would stand as an enduring public disgrace among surrounding nations. Jerusalem, once known as the place where the Lord had set His name, became evidence of the seriousness of rejecting His commands.

Jer 23:40 And I will bring upon you everlasting shame…
Jer 24:9 I will make them a horror and an offense…
Deu 28:37 You will become an object of horror, scorn, and ridicule…

all who pass by will be appalled

Travelers and neighboring peoples would be shocked by the scale of the destruction. The fallen city and abandoned countryside would testify that Judah’s downfall was not accidental but the result of God’s judgment.

Jer 49:17 Edom will become an object of horror. All who pass by…
1Ki 9:8 And when this temple has become a heap of rubble,…

and shake their heads.

Their gesture would express disbelief, contempt, and mourning at the ruin of a nation that had received such great blessing.

Psa 109:25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me…
Psa 22:7 All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads:
Lam 2:15 All who pass by clap their hands at you in scorn.…

I will scatter them before the enemy like the east wind.

God declares that Judah will be driven before its enemies with the force and suddenness of a desert wind. The east wind, hot and destructive, conveyed desolation and ruin. Judah’s coming defeat by Babylon would not be accidental or merely political; it would be God’s judgment for their persistent rebellion, resulting in the scattering of the people and the loss of their land.

Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…
Ezk 5:10 As a result, fathers among you will eat their sons…
Hos 13:15 Although he flourishes among his brothers,…

I will show them My back and not My face in the day of their calamity.”

Rather than granting His favor, protection, and deliverance, the Lord would turn away from Judah when disaster came. Their calamity would culminate in the Babylonian invasion, Jerusalem’s fall, and exile. God’s refusal to intervene reflected the seriousness of their long-standing rejection of His covenant and repeated warnings.

Deu 31:17-18 On that day My anger will burn against them,…
Deu 32:20 He said: “I will hide My face from them;…
Mic 3:4 Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer…

Another Plot against Jeremiah

Then some said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah,

Jeremiah’s own countrymen conspired to silence him because his warnings threatened their security and exposed their rebellion against the Lord. Rather than repent, they treated God’s prophet as an enemy.

Jer 11:19 For I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter;…
Psa 37:12 The wicked scheme against the righteous…

for the law will never be lost to the priest,

They trusted the continued presence of priests and temple worship as proof that Judah would remain secure, assuming religious institutions could protect them while they ignored God’s commands.

Mal 2:7 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge…
Deu 33:10 He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law…

nor counsel to the wise,

They also relied on their political advisers and respected leaders, believing human wisdom would preserve the nation despite Jeremiah’s warnings.

Pro 11:14 For lack of guidance, a nation falls,…
Pro 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel.…

nor an oracle to the prophet.

Their confidence included the expectation that prophets would continue to offer acceptable messages. They rejected Jeremiah because he proclaimed judgment rather than the peace they wanted to hear.

Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…

Come, let us denounce him

The conspirators sought to destroy Jeremiah’s influence through accusations and public opposition instead of answering the truth of his message.

Jer 20:10 For I have heard the whispering of many:…
Psa 35:11 Hostile witnesses come forward; they make charges…

and pay no heed to any of his words.”

Their refusal to listen revealed hardened hearts. By rejecting Jeremiah, they rejected the Lord’s warning and moved closer to the judgment that would come upon Judah.

2Ch 36:16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words…
Zec 7:11-12 But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn…

Attend to me, O LORD.

Jeremiah appeals directly to God as opposition against his ministry intensifies. Though he has faithfully delivered God’s warnings, the people and their leaders have turned against him.

Psa 86:6 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and attend to my plea for mercy.
Psa 17:1 A prayer of David. Hear, O LORD, my righteous plea;…
Psa 5:1 For the choirmaster, to be accompanied by flutes.…

Hear what my accusers are saying!

His enemies are plotting against him and rejecting the message God gave through him. Jeremiah places their words before the Lord, trusting Him to judge the false charges and defend His servant.

Psa 35:11-12 Hostile witnesses come forward; they make charges…
Psa 27:12 Do not hand me over to the will of my foes,…
Psa 109:2-4 For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me;…

Should good be repaid with evil?

Jeremiah protests the injustice of being opposed by the very people for whom he has sought God’s mercy. Their hostility reveals the depth of Judah’s rebellion, as they reject both the Lord’s warning and the prophet sent to deliver it.

Gen 44:4 They had not gone far from the city when Joseph…
Psa 35:12 They repay me evil for good, to the bereavement of my soul.
Pro 17:13 If anyone returns evil for good, evil will never leave…

Yet they have dug a pit for me.

Jeremiah’s enemies have secretly planned his downfall, treating him as a threat rather than as God’s servant. The pit portrays deliberate treachery and the danger he faced from his own countrymen.

Psa 119:85 The arrogant have dug pits for me in violation of Your law.
Psa 57:6 They spread a net for my feet; my soul was despondent.…
Psa 35:7 For without cause they laid their net for me;…

Remember how I stood before You to speak good on their behalf,

Jeremiah had faithfully interceded for Judah, pleading that God would spare them despite their sin. His appeal recalls his role as a mediator who brought the needs of the people before the Lord.

Exo 32:11-14 But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God, saying,…
Deu 9:18-19 Then I fell down before the LORD for forty days…
Gen 18:23-33 Abraham stepped forward and said, “Will You really…

to turn Your wrath from them.

God’s wrath was not arbitrary but the righteous response to Judah’s persistent idolatry and disobedience. Jeremiah had sought to delay or avert judgment through prayer, yet the people answered his concern with betrayal.

Psa 106:23 So He said He would destroy them—had not Moses…
Num 25:11 Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest,…
Amo 7:2-6 And when the locusts had eaten every green plant…

Therefore, hand their children over to famine;

Judah’s persistent rebellion had brought God’s judgment upon the nation. Famine would devastate households and expose the helplessness of children, showing that sin’s consequences had reached every part of society.

Lam 2:11 My eyes fail from weeping; I am churning within.…
Lam 4:4 The nursing infant’s tongue clings in thirst…

pour out the power of the sword upon them.

Foreign invasion would follow famine. The sword represents the violence of war that would strip Judah of security, defense, and national stability.

Jer 15:2 If they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you are to tell them…
Lev 26:25 And I will bring a sword against you to execute…

Let their wives become childless and widowed;

War and death would leave many women without husbands or children, removing the family support on which they depended and deepening the nation’s sorrow.

Isa 47:9 These two things will overtake you in a moment,…
Psa 109:9 May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.

let their husbands be slain by disease,

Disease would accompany the wider calamity, claiming men who might otherwise have provided protection and provision for their families.

2Ch 21:14-15 So behold, the LORD is about to strike your people…
2Sa 24:15 So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel from that morning…

their young men struck down by the sword in battle.

The death of Judah’s young warriors would weaken the nation’s future and reveal the full scale of the coming judgment.

Jer 11:22 So this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “I will punish……
Ezk 30:17 The young men of On and Pi-beseth will fall by the sword,…

Let a cry be heard from their houses

Jeremiah asks God to bring judgment upon the men who plotted against him and rejected the Lord’s message. Their homes, once places of security, would be filled with anguish when judgment came.

Exo 12:30 During the night Pharaoh got up—he and all his officials…
Jer 9:19 For the sound of wailing is heard from Zion…
Zep 1:10 On that day,” declares the LORD, “a cry will go up…

when You suddenly bring raiders against them,

The attack would come swiftly through invading armies, fulfilling God’s warning that Judah’s rebellion would lead to devastation at the hands of Babylon.

for they have dug a pit to capture me

Jeremiah’s enemies secretly sought to silence and destroy him because he faithfully proclaimed God’s word. Their plot against the prophet was also rebellion against the God who sent him.

Psa 35:7 For without cause they laid their net for me;…
Psa 57:6 They spread a net for my feet; my soul was despondent.…
Psa 119:85 The arrogant have dug pits for me in violation of Your law.

and have hidden snares for my feet.

Their schemes were deliberate and deceitful, designed to bring Jeremiah down without cause. He places their actions before the Lord, trusting God to judge those who oppose His servant.

Psa 140:5 The proud hide a snare for me; the cords of their net…
Psa 142:3 Although my spirit grows faint within me, You know my way.…
Psa 31:4 You free me from the net laid out for me…

But You, O LORD, know all their deadly plots against me.

Jeremiah brought the conspiracy of his enemies before the Lord, who had already revealed the plans of the men of Anathoth and others who sought to silence him. Their hostility was not merely opposition to his message; they intended to take his life because he faithfully proclaimed God’s coming judgment.

Do not wipe out their guilt or blot out their sin from Your sight.

Psa 109:14-15 May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered…

Let them be overthrown before You;

He placed the matter in God’s hands rather than seeking personal revenge. The overthrow requested was a judicial act of God against those who opposed His word and persecuted His servant.

Psa 9:3-4 When my enemies retreat, they stumble and perish before You.…
Psa 7:15-16 He has dug a hole and hollowed it out;…
Psa 73:18-20 Surely You set them on slick ground; …

deal with them in the time of Your anger.
