Isaiah 48

Israel’s Stubbornness

“Listen to this, O house of Jacob,

God summons the people of Israel to hear His charge against them. Though they bear the name of their forefather Jacob, their conduct has not reflected the faithfulness expected of the covenant people.

Jer 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob,…

Psa 78:1 A Maskil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my instruction;…

you who are called by the name of Israel,

Israel was the name given to Jacob by God, marking the nation’s distinct identity and calling. They claimed that identity publicly, yet many treated it as an honor without accepting its obligations.

Gen 35:10 And God said to him, “Though your name is Jacob.…

who have descended from the line of Judah,

Judah was the tribe through which David’s royal house would come, and from which the promised Messiah would later be born. Their ancestry reminded them of God’s enduring promises, but it did not excuse their unfaithfulness.

Psa 78:68 But He chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which He loved.

who swear by the name of the LORD,

The people invoked the Lord’s name in oaths and religious observances. Such acts were meant to reflect reverence for God and accountability before Him, but their words were often unsupported by obedience.

Their profession was marked by hypocrisy. They claimed loyalty to the Lord while resisting His commands, exposing the gap between outward religion and genuine faithfulness.

who indeed call yourselves after the holy city

Jerusalem, the place of the Temple and the center of Israel’s worship, marked them as a people set apart for God. Yet their association with the holy city had become a source of empty confidence rather than evidence of faithful obedience.

the LORD of Hosts is His name.

The God they professed to trust is the sovereign ruler over heaven’s armies and all earthly powers. His name exposes the contrast between His holiness and power and their insincere worship.

Isa 47:4 Our Redeemer—the LORD of Hosts is His name…
Isa 54:5 For your husband is your Maker—the LORD of Hosts…

I foretold the former things long ago;

God had announced earlier events through His prophets before they occurred, demonstrating His sovereign direction of Israel’s history and His faithfulness to His covenant purposes.

Isa 45:21 Speak up and present your case—yes, let them take counsel…
Isa 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times…

they came out of My mouth and I proclaimed them.

The prophecies originated with God, not human imagination. He made His purposes known publicly through His chosen messengers so that their fulfillment would identify Him as the true God.

Isa 45:23 By Myself I have sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth,…
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…

Suddenly I acted,

At the appointed time, God intervened decisively to accomplish what He had declared. His actions were neither delayed by human resistance nor dependent on human strength.

Isa 29:5 But your many foes will be like fine dust…
Isa 30:13 This iniquity of yours is like a breach about to fail…

and they came to pass.

The fulfillment of former prophecies confirmed the certainty of God’s word. What He has spoken concerning His people, judgment, redemption, and the future will likewise be fulfilled.

1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…
Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel…

For I knew that you are stubborn;

God had long known Israel’s persistent resistance to His will. Their history included repeated rebellion, idolatry, and distrust even after deliverance from Egypt, provision in the wilderness, and the giving of the law. Their conduct did not surprise God; it showed the settled condition of a people unwilling to obey Him.

your neck is iron

Israel refused to bend in humble submission to God’s authority. Like an unyielding neck that will not bow, the nation resisted correction and persisted in self-will despite God’s warnings and acts of mercy.

Jer 7:26 Yet they would not listen to Me or incline their ear,…
Jer 19:15 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…

Ezk 3:8-9 Behold, I will make your face as hard as their faces…

Job 12:22 He reveals the deep things of darkness…

You have never heard;

Israel had received God’s law, warnings, and promises through Moses and the prophets, yet repeatedly refused to obey. Their problem was not lack of revelation but persistent resistance to it.

Deu 29:4 Yet to this day the LORD has not given you…
Jer 5:21 Hear this, O foolish and senseless people……

you have never understood;

They did not receive God’s words with faith or allow them to govern their conduct. Though they knew His mighty acts and covenant requirements, they continued in unbelief and idolatry.

Mat 13:14 In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled:…
Mrk 4:12 ‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving’…

for a long time your ears have not been open.

From the wilderness generation onward, Israel’s history was marked by recurring rebellion against the Lord’s commands. Their spiritual insensitivity had become deeply established.

Job 33:16 He opens their ears and terrifies them with warnings
Psa 40:6 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,…

Psa 78:57 They turned back and were faithless like their fathers,…

you have been called a rebel from birth.

Israel’s rebellion appeared early in its national history, including the complaints, unbelief, and idolatry displayed after the Exodus. God’s foreknowledge of their unfaithfulness magnifies His patience and faithfulness to His covenant.

Psa 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; the liars go astray…
Psa 51:5 Surely I was brought forth in iniquity; I was sinful…

For the sake of My name

God acted to preserve the honor of His holy name, which Israel’s rebellion had profaned among the nations. His faithfulness to His covenant and His revealed character governed His dealings with His people.

Ezk 36:22 Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is…
Psa 106:8 Yet He saved them for the sake of His name,…
Ezk 20:9 But I acted for the sake of My name, that it should not…

I will delay My wrath;

Though Israel deserved judgment for idolatry and unfaithfulness, God did not immediately bring the full punishment their sin required. His patience left room for repentance and preserved the people through whom His promises would continue.

Psa 78:38 And yet He was compassionate; He forgave their iniquity…
Neh 9:17 They refused to listen and failed to remember…
Exo 34:6-7 Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out:…

for the sake of My praise

By showing mercy while maintaining His righteousness, God displayed His power, faithfulness, and authority before Israel and the surrounding nations.

Isa 43:21 The people I formed for Myself will declare My praise.
Psa 50:23 He who sacrifices a thank offering honors Me,…
Eph 1:6 to the praise of His glorious grace,…

I will restrain it,

The withholding of judgment came by God’s deliberate will, not because Israel had earned mercy or escaped His control.

Hos 11:9 I will not execute the full fury of My anger;…
Mic 7:18 Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity…

so that you will not be cut off.

God preserved a remnant rather than destroying Israel completely, keeping His covenant purposes intact and carrying forward the line through which the promised Savior would come.

Lev 26:44 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land…
Jer 30:11 For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD.…
Ezk 20:17 Yet I looked on them with pity and did not destroy them…

See, I have refined you,

God had disciplined Israel through exile and suffering, separating them from idolatry and exposing the emptiness of their rebellion. His purpose was not their destruction but their restoration as a people set apart for His name.

Zec 13:9 This third I will bring through the fire;…
Mal 3:3 And He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver;…
Psa 66:10 For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us…

but not as silver;

Their refinement was not the complete removal of all impurity, as in the smelting of silver, but a measured discipline suited to their weakness. God preserved a remnant rather than allowing judgment to consume the nation.

Pro 25:4 Remove the dross from the silver, and a vessel…
Psa 12:6 The words of the LORD are flawless, like silver…

I have tested you

Israel’s trials revealed the condition of their hearts and demonstrated their dependence on the Lord. Their affliction exposed unbelief and rebellion while preparing the faithful to trust His promises.

Deu 8:2 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you…
Job 23:10 Yet He knows the way I have taken; when He has tested me…
Psa 26:2 Test me, O LORD, and try me; examine my heart and mind.

in the furnace of affliction.

The furnace refers especially to the severe oppression and loss connected with captivity. Though the suffering was real, it remained under God’s control and served His purpose of preserving His people and bringing them back to their land.

1Ki 8:51 For they are Your people and Your inheritance;…
1Pe 1:6-7 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while…
Isa 30:20 The Lord will give you the bread of adversity…

For My own sake, My very own sake, I will act;

God will preserve Israel despite its unfaithfulness because His covenant name and faithfulness are at stake. During the Babylonian exile, Israel’s restoration would demonstrate that the Lord had not been defeated by Babylon or abandoned His promises.

Ezk 36:22-23 Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is…
Ezk 20:9 But I acted for the sake of My name, that it should not…
1Sa 12:22 Indeed, for the sake of His great name…

for how can I let Myself be defamed?

If Israel remained under judgment without deliverance, the nations could conclude that Israel’s God lacked power or faithfulness. God’s actions reveal His holiness and uphold the honor of His name before the world.

Ezk 20:39 And as for you, O house of Israel, this is what the Lord GOD…
Rom 2:24 “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles”…

I will not yield My glory to another.

The Lord alone is God, and no idol, empire, or false deity can claim credit for Israel’s deliverance. His glory belongs exclusively to Him, exposing the emptiness of Babylonian gods and every rival to His worship.

Deliverance Promised to Israel

Listen to Me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I have called:

God addresses the descendants of Jacob as His covenant people. Jacob’s name, changed to Israel, recalls the patriarch from whom the twelve tribes descended. Their identity and calling rested on God’s sovereign choice, not on their strength or faithfulness. In the setting of coming exile and promised restoration, Israel was summoned to heed the God who had formed and preserved the nation.

Isa 44:1 But now listen, O Jacob My servant, Israel…
Isa 43:1 But now, this is what the LORD says—He who created you……
Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One.

I am He;

The Lord identifies Himself as the one true and living God. Unlike the idols of Babylon, He is not made, carried, or dependent upon human devotion. He remains constant in character, purpose, and power, and His word concerning Israel’s judgment and deliverance will stand.

Isa 43:10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD…
Deu 32:39 See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me…
Isa 46:4 Even to your old age, I will be the same,…

I am the first, and I am the last.

God existed before Israel, Babylon, and every earthly kingdom, and He will remain when they have passed away. He governs history from its beginning to its end, directing nations and fulfilling His purposes. Israel’s future was secure because it rested in the eternal God rather than in changing political powers.

Isa 44:6 Thus says the LORD, the King and Redeemer of Israel…
Rev 1:17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man.…
Rev 22:13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last…

Surely My own hand founded the earth,

God declares Himself the direct and sovereign Creator of the earth. Its existence rests on His purposeful act, not on chance or human power.

Isa 45:12 It is I who made the earth and created man…
Psa 102:25 In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth…
Job 38:4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?…

and My right hand spread out the heavens;

The heavens, with their vast order and beauty, were fashioned by God’s strength and wisdom. His rule extends from the earth to every part of the created universe.

Isa 44:24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer who formed you…
Job 9:8 He alone stretches out the heavens and…
Psa 104:2 He wraps Himself in light as with a garment;…

when I summon them, they stand up together.

Creation remains subject to God’s command. The earth and heavens respond as one to His will, showing that the Creator continues to govern all He has made.

Isa 40:26 Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these?…
Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded…
Job 38:7 while the morning stars sang together…

Come together, all of you, and listen:

Israel is summoned to hear the Lord’s declaration concerning the nations and His purpose for His people. The call demands attention because God is about to identify the One who alone directs history.

Isa 45:20 Come, gather together, and draw near, you fugitives…
Isa 34:1 Come near, O nations, to listen; pay attention, O peoples.…
Mic 1:2 Hear, O peoples, all of you; listen, O earth!…

Which of the idols has foretold these things?

No idol had announced Babylon’s fall or named the ruler who would bring it about. The gods of Babylon could neither reveal the future nor prevent the judgment God had decreed.

Isa 44:7-8 Who then is like Me? Let him say so! Let him declare his case…
Isa 41:22-23 Let them come and tell us what will happen.…
Isa 46:9-10 Remember what happened long ago, for I am God,…

The LORD’s chosen ally will carry out His desire against Babylon,

God’s chosen instrument was Cyrus, the Persian king who conquered Babylon in 539 BC. Though Cyrus did not belong to Israel, the Lord appointed him to overthrow Babylon and permit the Jewish exiles to return to their land.

Isa 45:1-4 This is what the LORD says to Cyrus His anointed,…
Isa 44:28 who says of Cyrus, ‘My shepherd will fulfill……
Dan 5:30-31 That very night Belshazzar king of the Chaldeans was slain,…

and His arm will be against the Chaldeans.

God’s power would fall upon Babylon and its ruling Chaldean people. Their empire, which had destroyed Jerusalem and carried Judah into exile, would be brought down according to the Lord’s purpose.

Jer 50:35 A sword is against the Chaldeans, declares the LORD…
Jer 51:24-25 Before your very eyes I will repay Babylon…

Isa 46:11 I summon a bird of prey from the east, a man for My purpose…
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…

yes, I have called him.

Cyrus was appointed by God to overthrow Babylon and permit the Jewish exiles to return and rebuild Jerusalem.

Cyrus’s campaign would prosper because God had determined its outcome. His success included Babylon’s fall and the restoration of the Jews to their land.

Isa 44:28 who says of Cyrus, ‘My shepherd will fulfill……
Isa 45:13 I will raise up Cyrus in righteousness…
Ezr 1:2 This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD…

God summons His people to hear His public declaration and recognize His authority over their history.

Deu 5:27 Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says.…
Isa 55:3 Incline your ear and come to Me; listen,…
Isa 46:3 Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant…

From the beginning I have not spoken in secret;

Unlike the hidden claims of false gods, the Lord’s purposes have been openly proclaimed through His servants.

Isa 45:19 I have not spoken in secret, from a place in a land…
Jhn 18:20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered.…
Jhn 16:25 I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech.…

Psa 25:8-9 Good and upright is the LORD; therefore He shows sinners…

If only you had paid attention to My commandments,

God laments Israel’s refusal to pay deep, attentive heed to the covenant He gave through Moses. Their persistent rebellion brought the judgment and exile Isaiah had warned of, though obedience would have led to covenant blessing.

Deu 5:29 If only they had such a heart to fear Me…
Psa 81:13 If only My people would listen to Me, if Israel would follow…
Deu 28:1-2 Now if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God…

your peace would have been like a river,

Israel could have enjoyed enduring security, prosperity, and wholeness instead of the distress caused by sin and judgment. Like a river that continually supplies life to the land, God’s peace would have sustained the nation.

Leave Babylon!

As Babylon faced judgment, the Jewish exiles were commanded to depart rather than remain among a people marked by idolatry and opposition to the Lord. Their return would recall the exodus from Egypt, when God brought His people out of bondage.
