Berean Study Bible Heaven Is My ThroneThe Lord speaks with His own authority, declaring His judgment on misplaced confidence in outward religion. 1Ki 21:19 Tell him that this is what the LORD says:… “Heaven is My throne, He rules from heaven as the supreme King over all creation, beyond the limits of human structures or institutions. Mat 5:34 But I tell you not to swear at all: either by heaven… and earth is My footstool. The whole earth remains under His authority. No place, nation, or sanctuary can contain or control His presence. Mat 5:35 or by the earth, for it is His footstool;… What kind of house will you build for Me? Though God had commanded the temple’s construction and received worship there, the building itself could never serve as His true dwelling in the sense of containing Him. 1Ch 17:4 Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says… Or where will My place of repose be? God does not depend on human efforts for a resting place. The coming context shows that He looks instead to those who are humble, contrite, and reverent toward His word. Act 7:49 Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.… Has not My hand made all these things? The LORD claims sole authorship of the heavens, the earth, and all that fills them. No temple, sacrifice, or human work can add to the God who brought all things into existence. Isa 45:12 It is I who made the earth and created man… And so they came into being,” declares the LORD. Creation stands because God willed and spoke it into being. His declaration also exposes the emptiness of worship that honors outward forms while resisting the One who made all things. Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded… “This is the one I will esteem: God’s favor rests not on those who trust in religious status or impressive offerings, but on those whose hearts are rightly ordered before Him. Psa 138:6 Though the LORD is on high, He attends to the lowly;… he who is humble and contrite in spirit, Humility recognizes dependence upon God, and contrition acknowledges sin without excuse. Such a person comes before the LORD in repentance rather than self-confidence. Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;… who trembles at My word. Reverence for God is shown by receiving His word as true, authoritative, and binding. The LORD seeks worshipers who fear Him and submit to what He has spoken. Ezr 9:4 Then everyone who trembled at the words… Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who slays a man; God had commanded animal sacrifices, but offerings brought by people who defied Him were offensive rather than acceptable. An ox, though valuable and suitable for sacrifice, could not cover deliberate rebellion. Isa 1:11-15 “What good to Me is your multitude of sacrifices?”… whoever sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s neck; A lamb was a proper sacrificial animal, while a dog was ceremonially unclean. The comparison shows that outward compliance with worship requirements could become as detestable as an unclean act when joined to disobedience. Mal 1:8-14 When you offer blind animals for sacrifice,… whoever presents a grain offering is like one who offers pig’s blood; Grain offerings expressed thanksgiving and dedication, yet God rejected them from those who continued in sin. Pig’s blood represented what was forbidden and defiling under the Law. Amo 5:21-23 “I hate, I despise your feasts! I cannot stand the stench”… whoever offers frankincense is like one who blesses an idol. Incense belonged to the worship of the Lord, but worship offered without loyalty to Him was no better than honoring a false god. Israel’s history repeatedly showed the danger of combining devotion to God with idolatrous practices. Jer 44:17-19 Instead, we will do everything we vowed to do… Indeed, they have chosen their own ways and delighted in their abominations. The people knowingly preferred their own desires to God’s commands. Their sacrifices could not hide hearts committed to rebellion, idolatry, and moral corruption. Isa 65:2-5 All day long I have held out My hands to an obstinate people… So I will choose their punishment God’s judgment answers Israel’s deliberate rebellion. Under the covenant, persistent disobedience brought the curses God had warned of, including defeat, devastation, and exile. Ezk 7:3-4 The end is now upon you, and I will unleash My anger.… and I will bring terror upon them, The terror would be realized through invading armies and national collapse, culminating in the Babylonian conquest of Judah. What the people feared would come upon them because they had rejected the Lord. Lev 26:16 then this is what I will do to you: I will bring upon you… because I called and no one answered, God had repeatedly summoned His people to return to Him through His prophets, but they refused His call. Pro 1:24 Because you refused my call, and no one took… I spoke and no one listened. Their rejection was not caused by lack of revelation. They heard God’s word and knowingly ignored it. Jer 25:3-4 From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon… But they did evil in My sight Their sins were fully exposed before God, who judges not only outward acts but the rebellion of the heart. Jdg 2:11 And the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD… and chose that in which I did not delight.” Israel willingly embraced idolatry and evil rather than obedience. Their judgment followed their own choices and their continued refusal to do what pleased God. Isa 65:12 I will destine you for the sword, and you will all kneel… You who tremble at His word, God addresses the faithful remnant whose reverence for Him is shown by humble submission to His commands rather than outward religion. Ezr 9:4 Then everyone who trembled at the words… hear the word of the LORD: The Lord calls them to receive His declaration concerning the opposition they face within their own people. Jer 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob,… “Your brothers who hate you and exclude you because of My name Their persecutors are fellow Israelites who reject and isolate those devoted to the Lord, treating faithfulness to Him as a cause for contempt. Luk 6:22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude… have said, ‘Let the LORD be glorified that we may see your joy!’ Their words are mocking. They challenge the faithful to show evidence of God’s favor while claiming concern for His glory. Isa 5:19 Let Him hurry and hasten His work so that we may see it… But they will be put to shame.” God will vindicate those who remain faithful to Him and expose the guilt of those who despise His people. Psa 40:14 May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded;… Hear the uproar from the city; Jerusalem is the scene of God’s decisive judgment, and the disturbance signals that His action has begun among the people who had professed to worship Him while resisting His rule. Isa 22:2 O city of commotion, O town of revelry?… listen to the voice from the temple! The judgment proceeds from the place associated with God’s presence and worship, showing that no outward religious observance can shield rebellion from His justice. Amo 1:2 He said: “The LORD roars from Zion and raises His voice… It is the voice of the LORD, The announcement comes with divine authority; the Lord Himself speaks and acts as Israel’s covenant God. Psa 29:3-4 The voice of the LORD is over the waters;… repaying His enemies what they deserve! Those who oppose God and reject His ways will receive the judgment their deeds merit. Deu 32:43 Rejoice, O heavens, with Him, and let all God's angels…
Rejoice with JerusalemZion’s restoration will come by God’s direct action, not through the long suffering and delay normally associated with childbirth. The Lord will fulfill His promises to Jerusalem with suddenness and power. Isa 54:1 Shout for joy, O barren woman, who bears no children;… before she was in pain, she delivered a boy. The birth of the male child pictures the emergence of a renewed people and kingdom from Zion. What human effort could not accomplish, God will bring forth in His appointed time, marking a new beginning after judgment and exile. Rev 12:5 And she gave birth to a son, a male child,… Who has heard of such as this? Isaiah portrays Israel’s restoration as an event without parallel. After long judgment, exile, and dispersion, God would restore His people in a manner no nation had experienced. Deu 4:32 Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other… Who has seen such things? The repeated question magnifies the wonder of God’s faithfulness. Israel’s preservation and return testify that the Lord keeps His covenant promises despite generations of rebellion and suffering. Isa 52:15 He will sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths.… Can a country be born in a day or a nation be delivered in an instant? The image anticipates a sudden national renewal rather than a gradual recovery. Israel’s return from Babylon foreshadowed a greater restoration, and the reestablishment of the State of Israel in 1948 stands as a striking historical evidence of the nation’s continuing place in God’s purposes. Isa 60:22 The least of you will become a thousand,… Yet as soon as Zion was in labor, she gave birth to her children. Zion is pictured as a mother whose anguish is followed immediately by deliverance. The hardships endured by Israel will give way to restoration, regathering, and the fulfillment of God’s promises to His people. Mic 4:10 Writhe in agony, O Daughter of Zion, like a woman in labor.… Shall I bring a baby to the point of birth and not deliver it?” says the LORD. Israel’s restoration would not fail at the moment of fulfillment. Childbirth, though perilous in the ancient world, pictured the certainty that God would complete the work He had begun: bringing His scattered people home, renewing Zion, and establishing the blessings He promised. Isa 37:3 “This is what Hezekiah says: Today is a day of distress,”… “Or will I who deliver close the womb?” says your God. The God who initiates life and directs history would not withhold the outcome He had ordained. Calling Himself “your God” recalls His covenant bond with Israel and assures them that their future rests on His power and faithfulness, not on their present weakness or the opposition of the nations. 1Sa 1:5-6 But to Hannah he would give a double portion,… Be glad for Jerusalem Jerusalem is the city God chose for His name, the site of the temple, and the center of Israel’s worship. Though it endured invasion, destruction, and exile, Isaiah looks beyond its desolation to the restoration God will bring. Isa 65:18-19 But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create;… and rejoice over her, Joy will replace the grief caused by Jerusalem’s judgment and suffering. Her restoration will display God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises and His return of blessing to Zion. Isa 62:4-5 No longer will you be called Forsaken, nor your land… all who love her. Those devoted to the Lord and His purposes are called to share in Jerusalem’s future blessing. The city represents more than its walls and streets; it is the appointed place of God’s dwelling and the gathering point of His people. Psa 102:13-16 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,… Rejoice greatly with her, The repeated command emphasizes the magnitude of the coming restoration. Jerusalem’s peace, security, and abundance will come from the Lord rather than from human strength. Zep 3:14-15 Sing for joy, O Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel!… all who mourn over her, Many had mourned Jerusalem’s ruin, especially after the Babylonian destruction of the city and temple. Their sorrow will not have the final word, for God promises comfort, renewal, and joy for Zion. Isa 61:2-3 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor… so that you may nurse and be satisfied at her comforting breasts; Jerusalem is portrayed as a mother whose restored children receive comfort, provision, and security. After judgment and exile, God promises that His people will again find fullness and peace in the city He has chosen. Isa 60:16 You will drink the milk of nations and nurse… you may drink deeply and delight yourselves in her glorious abundance. The restored Jerusalem will overflow with the blessings God provides. Her abundance reflects His faithfulness to gather, sustain, and honor His people, replacing former grief and desolation with lasting joy. Psa 36:8 They feast on the abundance of Your house,… For this is what the LORD says: The promised restoration rests on the LORD’s own declaration. Isaiah speaks God’s word concerning Jerusalem’s future comfort after judgment. Jer 31:2 This is what the LORD says: “The people who survived… “I will extend peace to her like a river, The LORD will give Jerusalem enduring well-being, security, and blessing in overflowing measure. What had been marked by grief and devastation will know abundant peace. Isa 48:18 If only you had paid attention to My commandments,… and the wealth of nations like a flowing stream; The nations will bring their resources and honor to Jerusalem, fulfilling the LORD’s purpose to exalt Zion and display His glory among the peoples. Isa 60:11 Your gates will always stand open; they will never be shut… you will nurse and be carried on her arm, Jerusalem is pictured as a restored mother caring for her children. Those who mourned over her will be nourished, protected, and sustained in the city God has renewed. Num 11:12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth,… and bounced upon her knees. The image portrays tenderness, joy, and close care. The LORD’s restored people will experience the comfort and security that follow His judgment and salvation. Gen 50:23 He saw Ephraim’s sons to the third generation,… As a mother comforts her son, God compares His care for His people to the tender, personal comfort a mother gives her child. In Israel’s family life, a mother’s care included protection, reassurance, and provision during distress. Psa 131:2 Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul;… so will I comfort you, God promises enduring comfort to those who remain faithful to Him. After judgment and exile, He would not abandon His people but would restore them and renew their security in His presence. Isa 51:12 “I, even I, am He who comforts you. Why should you be afraid… and you will be consoled over Jerusalem.” Jerusalem, devastated by invasion and exile, would again become the place where God’s restored people experienced His blessing. Its renewal pointed beyond the rebuilding of the city to the future peace and fellowship God would establish with His people. Isa 52:9 Break forth in joy, sing together, O ruins of Jerusalem,… When you see, you will rejoice, Jerusalem’s restoration will bring visible evidence of God’s faithfulness, ending the grief and humiliation endured by His people. The return from exile foreshadowed this joy, but the full promise reaches toward God’s final restoration of Zion and the rejoicing of those who belong to Him. Isa 60:5 Then you will look and be radiant, and your heart will… and you will flourish like grass; God’s servants will be renewed with the speed and vitality of grass after rain. Their flourishing includes security, peace, and spiritual strength after a season of suffering and loss. Psa 72:16 May there be an abundance of grain in the land;… then the hand of the LORD will be revealed to His servants, God will openly act for those who serve Him, showing His power to deliver, protect, and vindicate them. What had been hidden or delayed will become clear through His intervention. Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan… but His wrath will be shown to His enemies. The same coming of God that brings blessing to His servants brings judgment upon those who reject Him and oppose His purposes. His judgment is righteous and final against persistent rebellion. Nam 1:2-3 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging…
Final Judgments against the WickedThe Lord’s return is certain and will bring judgment upon persistent rebellion. Fire portrays His holy presence, consuming evil while purifying those who belong to Him. The coming Day of the Lord will reveal His authority over all nations and peoples. Psa 50:3 Our God approaches and will not be silent!… His chariots are like a whirlwind— The imagery presents the Lord advancing with irresistible power and speed. Chariots, symbols of royal and military strength, show that no human force can withstand His judgment. Jer 4:13 Behold, he advances like the clouds,… to execute His anger with fury God’s wrath is not uncontrolled passion but His righteous response to sin, idolatry, and injustice. Those who have rejected His rule will face the consequences of their rebellion. Jer 21:5 And I Myself will fight against you with a mighty arm… and His rebuke with flames of fire. His judgment exposes and removes what is evil. His rebuke implies correction and judgment. Fire brings destruction upon the wicked and serves as a refining work among His people, anticipating the final judgment of God’s enemies. Psa 18:13-15 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High… For by fire and by His sword, God’s judgment will come with irresistible power. Fire displays His holy wrath against sin, while the sword portrays His direct action against those who persist in rebellion. These images also reflect the destruction brought by ancient warfare, underscoring that His judgment will be neither symbolic nor avoidable. 2Th 1:7-8 to grant relief to you who are oppressed and to us as well… the LORD will execute judgment on all flesh, The judgment extends beyond Jerusalem and Israel to every nation and people. God rules over all humanity and will hold every person accountable for rejecting His truth and opposing His purposes. Jer 25:31 The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth… and many will be slain by the LORD. The scale of judgment will be great because human rebellion is widespread. Isaiah’s warning anticipates the final overthrow of God’s enemies, when the Lord will judge evil openly and establish His righteous reign. Jer 25:33 Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread… “Those who consecrate and purify themselves Those who consecrate and purify themselves for pagan rites claim a holiness that directly opposes God’s commands. Their ceremonial actions conceal rebellion rather than genuine devotion. Lev 20:7 Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy,… to enter the groves— Sacred gardens were places of idolatrous worship, patterned after Canaanite religious practices rather than worship at the temple God had appointed. 2Ki 17:10 They set up for themselves sacred pillars… to follow one in the center The phrase likely refers to a central leader who directs the ceremony and unites the participants in idolatrous worship. Deu 13:2 and if the sign or wonder he has spoken to you comes about,… of those who eat the flesh of swine and vermin and rats— Their food openly violates the distinctions God gave Israel between clean and unclean animals. Combined with idolatry, such conduct displays deliberate rejection of the covenant. Lev 11:7-8 And the pig, though it has a split hoof… will perish together,” God’s judgment will fall on all who participate, regardless of their role or outward claims of purification. Isa 1:28 But rebels and sinners will together be shattered,… declares the LORD. The coming judgment rests on the certain word and authority of God. Jer 23:31 “Yes,” declares the LORD, “I am against the prophets… “And I, knowing their deeds and thoughts, God sees every outward act and every hidden motive. His coming judgment rests on complete knowledge of human rebellion and faithfulness, leaving no nation or individual beyond His righteous assessment. Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind… am coming to gather all nations and tongues, The gathering reaches beyond Israel to the peoples of the whole earth. Though humanity was scattered among nations and languages, God will summon representatives from every people to stand before Him. Dan 7:14 And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship… and they will come and see My glory. The nations will witness the open display of God’s majesty and rule. What Israel saw in limited measure through God’s presence among them will be revealed publicly when He brings His purposes for the world to their appointed fulfillment. Jhn 17:24 Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me… I will establish a sign among them, God will provide a visible demonstration of His power and authority following His judgment of the nations. The sign will identify His work and confirm that He alone is Lord. Isa 49:22 This is what the Lord GOD says: “Behold,… and I will send survivors from among them to the nations— Those preserved through judgment will become witnesses of God’s glory. Rather than remaining in Jerusalem, they will carry news of what God has done to peoples who have not known Him. Ezk 12:16 But I will spare a few of them from sword and famine… to Tarshish, Put, and the archers of Lud; These distant regions include lands west of Israel, North Africa, and Asia Minor. Lud was known for its military skill, especially its archers, showing that God’s message would reach powerful as well as remote peoples. Jer 46:9 Advance, O horses! Race furiously, O chariots!… to Tubal, Javan, and the islands far away Tubal and Javan point toward areas of Asia Minor and Greece, while the distant islands or coastlands represent lands beyond Israel’s immediate world. The list emphasizes the worldwide reach of God’s purpose. 1Ch 1:5 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai… who have not heard of My fame or seen My glory. The nations had lived without direct knowledge of the God of Israel or the revelation of His majesty in Jerusalem. Their ignorance would not remain permanent. Isa 52:15 He will sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths.… So they will proclaim My glory among the nations. The survivors will declare God’s acts, holiness, and kingship throughout the world. The gathering and restoration of Israel will become a testimony that draws the nations to acknowledge His glory. Psa 96:3 Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders… And they will bring all your brothers from all the nations as a gift to the LORD The nations will gather Israel’s scattered people and bring them back to the Lord. Their return will display God’s faithfulness to restore His covenant people and will be received as an act of worship. Deu 30:3-4 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion… on horses and chariots and wagons, on mules and camels, The varied means of travel portray a large-scale return from distant lands. What once marked military strength, commerce, and long-distance travel will serve God’s purpose of bringing His people home. 1Ki 10:28-29 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and Kue;… to My holy mountain Jerusalem,” says the LORD, Jerusalem is the appointed center of Israel’s worship and the place of God’s earthly dwelling among His people. The return to the city includes the renewal of Israel’s worship and covenant life under the Lord’s authority. Isa 2:2-3 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD… “just as the Israelites bring an offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD.” Israel’s restored people will be brought with the care and holiness associated with an acceptable temple offering. The image points to cleansing and consecration before God, fulfilled ultimately through the sacrifice of Christ, who enables His people to approach God in purity. Num 7:13-17 His offering was one silver platter, and one silver bowl… “And I will select some of them as priests and Levites,” God promises to appoint people from among the nations to serve in roles once limited to Israel’s priestly tribe. The Levites were assigned to tabernacle and temple service, while Aaron’s descendants served as priests. Isaiah foresees a future order in which those brought to the Lord from every nation share in holy service, displaying the full reach of God’s redemption and the enduring reality of worship before Him. Num 16:5 Then he said to Korah and all his followers,… says the LORD. God’s own declaration guarantees the certainty of this promise. His authority establishes both the calling of His servants and the fulfillment of His purposes. Exo 19:6 And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests… “For just as the new heavens and the new earth, God promises a future renewal of creation, replacing the present world marked by sin, death, and corruption. The new order will be wholly suited to His righteous rule. Isa 65:17 For behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth.… which I will make, The renewal will come by God’s direct creative power. As He created the world in the beginning, He will establish its final and permanent form according to His purpose. Rev 21:5 And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold,… will endure before Me,” declares the LORD, Unlike the present heavens and earth, the new creation will remain forever in God’s presence. The LORD’s declaration guarantees the certainty and permanence of what He has promised. Psa 102:26-27 They will perish, but You remain; they will all… “so your descendants and your name will endure. Israel’s faithful remnant will not be erased or forgotten. Their continued existence and identity rest on God’s covenant faithfulness, extending into the everlasting kingdom He will establish. Psa 72:17 May his name endure forever; may his name…… From one New Moon to another In the new heavens and new earth, worship will follow an ordered and continual pattern. The monthly observance recalls God’s rule over time and His provision for the life of His people. Num 28:11-15 At the beginning of every month, you are to present… and from one Sabbath to another, Weekly worship and rest will remain central in the restored order. The Sabbath’s purpose of honoring the Creator and enjoying His presence will be fully realized. Exo 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.… all mankind will come to worship before Me,” People from every nation will gather before the LORD in Jerusalem to acknowledge Him as King. Israel’s God will be worshiped universally, fulfilling His purpose to bring the nations under His righteous rule. Psa 86:9 All the nations You have made will come and bow before You… says the LORD. The promise rests on the LORD’s authority and faithfulness. What He has declared concerning His kingdom and the worship of all peoples will surely come to pass. Amo 9:15 I will firmly plant them in their own land… “As they go forth, Those who come to worship the Lord in Jerusalem will depart and behold the outcome of His final judgment. Mat 24:28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather. they will see the corpses of the men who have rebelled against Me; The rebels are those who rejected God’s rule and opposed His purposes. Their defeat stands as a public witness that no enemy can escape His judgment. Num 16:32-35 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them… for their worm will never die, Their destruction is portrayed as continual and irreversible, with no recovery or escape from the consequences of rebellion. Mrk 9:48 their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched… their fire will never be quenched, God’s judgment is not temporary or ineffective. The fire remains until His sentence is fully and eternally carried out. Mat 3:12 His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing… and they will be a horror to all mankind.” All humanity will recognize the holiness and justice of God as the fate of the rebellious stands in sharp contrast to the blessing of those who worship Him. Jer 29:18 I will pursue them with sword and famine and plague.… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
