Ezekiel 33
Berean Study Bible

Ezekiel the Watchman for Israel

Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

God continued to speak directly to Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile, entrusting him with messages for the house of Israel. Ezekiel did not speak from personal opinion or political insight; he delivered the revelation God gave him. The repeated communications prepared the exiles for renewed warnings concerning Jerusalem’s fall, personal responsibility, and the need to heed God’s appointed watchman.

Ezk 6:1 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Ezk 7:1 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Ezk 12:1 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Son of man,

God addresses Ezekiel as a mortal man called to stand before Him and represent the people in receiving and delivering His word. Jesus also used this title of Himself, identifying with humanity while fulfilling His unique authority as prophet, priest, and king.

Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Dan 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified…

speak to your people and tell them:

Ezekiel must faithfully communicate the warning God gives him to the Israelites.

Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…
Jer 1:7 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…

‘Suppose I bring the sword against a land,

The sword represents war and judgment permitted by God against a nation.

Ezk 14:17 Or if I bring a sword against that land,…
Lev 26:25 And I will bring a sword against you to execute…

and the people of that land choose a man from among them,

The inhabitants appoint one of their own to serve the community in a time of danger.

Exo 18:21 Furthermore, select capable men from among the people…

appointing him as their watchman,

A watchman stood at a city’s wall or tower to observe approaching threats and sound the alarm so the people could respond.

Ezk 3:17 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house…
Hab 2:1 I will stand at my guard post and station myself…

and he sees the sword coming against that land

The watchman stands on the city’s walls or towers, responsible to observe approaching danger. The sword represents an invading army and the judgment God permits against a rebellious people. The land is Israel’s covenant inheritance, making the approaching threat a national crisis.

Ezk 14:17 Or if I bring a sword against that land,…
Jer 4:5-6 Announce in Judah, proclaim in Jerusalem, and say:…
Jer 1:13-14 Again the word of the LORD came to me, asking,…

and blows the ram’s horn

The shofar, or ram’s horn, sounded an unmistakable alarm throughout a city or region. Its blast summoned the people to prepare, seek safety, and respond to the danger before it arrived.

Jos 6:4-5 Have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns…
Num 10:9-10 When you enter into battle, sound short blasts…
Jol 2:1 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm…

to warn the people.

The watchman’s responsibility is fulfilled by giving a clear warning. In Ezekiel’s ministry, the watchman illustrates the prophet’s duty to announce God’s judgment and call Israel to turn from sin. The people remain accountable for how they respond to the warning.

Ezk 3:17-19 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house…
Jer 6:17 I appointed watchmen over you and said, ‘Listen’…
Amo 3:6-7 If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble?…

Then if anyone hears the sound of the horn

The watchman’s trumpet gave a clear public warning that danger was near. In Israel, the shofar summoned people, marked sacred occasions, and alerted a city to military threat. Its sound meant that the inhabitants had time to respond before the enemy arrived.

Num 10:9 When you enter into battle, sound short blasts…
Jol 2:1 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm…
1Co 14:8 Again, if the trumpet sounds a muffled call,…

but fails to heed the warning,

Anyone who heard the alarm and failed to heed it—to pay attention and act accordingly—chose not to seek safety. The warning was neither hidden nor uncertain, and each listener bore responsibility for responding to it.

Jer 6:17 I appointed watchmen over you and said, ‘Listen’…
Pro 1:24-25 Because you refused my call, and no one took…
Heb 12:25 See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks…

and the sword comes and takes him away,

The sword represents the invading force God permitted to bring judgment upon the land. Death or captivity followed when a person ignored the announced danger.

Ezk 21:3-5 This is what the LORD says: ‘I am against you,…
Jer 42:16 then the sword you fear will overtake you there…
Isa 31:8 Then Assyria will fall, but not by the sword of man;…

his blood will be on his own head.

His death rested upon his own decision, not upon the watchman, who had faithfully sounded the alarm. His blood was on his own head, signifying personal culpability and bloodguilt. God’s judgment was just because warning had been given and rejected.

Jos 2:19 If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street,…
1Ki 2:37 On the day you go out and cross the Kidron Valley,…
2Sa 1:16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood…

Since he heard the sound of the horn

The watchman’s trumpet gave public warning that danger was approaching. In Israel, the horn summoned people to act quickly when an enemy threatened the city. God had appointed Ezekiel to give such warnings to the exiles.

Jer 6:17 I appointed watchmen over you and said, ‘Listen’…
Jol 2:1 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm…
Amo 3:6 If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble?…

but failed to heed the warning,

The hearer had received sufficient notice but chose not to respond. His refusal was deliberate, not the result of ignorance.

Pro 1:24-25 Because you refused my call, and no one took…
Pro 29:1 A man who remains stiff-necked after much reproof…
Zec 1:4 Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets…

his blood will be on his own head.

He would bear responsibility for the judgment that followed. The watchman had fulfilled his duty by sounding the alarm, leaving the guilty person accountable for rejecting it.

1Ki 2:37 On the day you go out and cross the Kidron Valley,…
Act 18:6 But when they opposed and insulted him,…
2Sa 1:16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood…

If he had heeded the warning,

Repentance and obedience offered a real escape from the threatened judgment. God’s warnings were given so that sinners might turn from their evil way.

Pro 1:33 But whoever listens to me will dwell in safety,…
Ezk 18:21 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins…
Pro 19:16 He who keeps a commandment preserves his soul,…

he would have saved his life.

By responding to the warning, he could have avoided the judgment brought on by his sin.

Ezk 18:27 But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness…
Deu 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…
Pro 16:17 The highway of the upright leads away from evil;…

But if the watchman sees the sword coming

The watchman stood on the city wall or tower, watching for approaching armies and other dangers. His position gave him responsibility to recognize a threat before those below could see it.

Ezk 3:17-21 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house…
Hab 2:1-3 I will stand at my guard post and station myself…

and fails to blow the horn to warn the people,

A trumpet alarm called the city to prepare, flee, or defend itself. Silence from the watchman left the people exposed because he neglected the duty entrusted to him.

Num 10:9-10 When you enter into battle, sound short blasts…
Jer 6:17 I appointed watchmen over you and said, ‘Listen’…
Amo 3:6-8 If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble?…

and the sword comes and takes away a life,

The approaching sword represents the judgment and destruction that follow when an enemy attacks. The loss is real, not merely symbolic, and the watchman’s failure has serious consequences.

Jer 15:2 If they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you are to tell them…
Jer 43:11 He will come and strike down the land of Egypt,…
Ezk 21:9-17 Son of man, prophesy and tell them that this is…

then that one will be taken away in his iniquity,

The person who dies remains accountable for his own sin. God does not transfer that guilt to the watchman, since each person answers to Him for his own conduct.

Ezk 18:26 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness…
Ezk 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die.…
Lev 26:39 Those of you who survive in the lands of your enemies…

but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.’

The watchman is answerable for withholding the warning God required him to give. Ezekiel was appointed to speak God’s message faithfully, leaving each hearer responsible for responding to it.

Act 20:26-27 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent…
Act 18:6 But when they opposed and insulted him,…
Gen 9:5-6 And surely I will require the life of any man or beast…

As for you, O son of man,

God addresses Ezekiel by a title that emphasizes his human weakness and his calling to stand before the people as God’s servant. Though he bears the message of the Lord, he remains one of the people to whom he is sent.

Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Ezk 4:1 Now you, son of man, take a brick, place it before…
Ezk 5:1 “As for you, son of man, take a sharp sword,”…

I have made you a watchman

Ezekiel is assigned the duty of a guard who watches for danger and sounds the alarm. He is responsible to warn the people when God reveals coming judgment, whether they listen or refuse.

Ezk 3:17 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house…
Isa 21:6 For this is what the Lord says to me: “Go, post a lookout…
Hab 2:1 I will stand at my guard post and station myself…

for the house of Israel;

The warning is directed to Israel, including the exiles living in Babylon. Though the nation had been judged for persistent rebellion, God continued to speak to His covenant people and call them to turn from sin.

Ezk 3:4 Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now…
Ezk 3:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “eat what you find here.”…
Ezk 2:3 “Son of man,” He said to me, “I am sending you…

so hear the word from My mouth

Ezekiel’s message must come from God rather than from his own judgment or opinion. He is to receive the Lord’s instruction faithfully before speaking to the people.

Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
Deu 8:3 He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna…
Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……

and give them the warning from Me.

The warning carries God’s authority and reveals His justice and mercy. Israel is given clear notice of its sin and of the judgment that follows continued rebellion.

Ezk 3:18-21 If I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’…
2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…
Jer 7:25 From the day your fathers came out of Egypt…

If I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’

God declares the certainty of judgment upon those who persist in rebellion. He entrusted Ezekiel with announcing that warning to Israel during its exile.

Ezk 18:4 Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son…
Ezk 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die.…
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God…

but you do not speak out to dissuade him from his way,

As a watchman, Ezekiel was responsible to sound the alarm rather than remain silent when danger approached.

Lev 19:17 You must not harbor hatred against your brother…
Pro 24:11-12 Rescue those being led away to death, and restrain…
Jas 5:19-20 My brothers, if one of you should wander…

then that wicked man will die in his iniquity,

The wicked person would bear the judgment for his own sin, having refused the warning and continued in his evil way.

Ezk 18:24 But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness…
Ezk 18:26 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness…
Num 15:30-31 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…

yet I will hold you accountable for his blood.

Ezekiel would also answer to God for failing to carry out the task he had been given.

Ezk 3:18-19 If I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’…
Gen 9:5-6 And surely I will require the life of any man or beast…
1Ki 2:32-33 The LORD will bring his bloodshed back upon his own head,…

But if you warn the wicked man to turn from his way,

Ezekiel’s calling as Israel’s watchman required him to announce God’s warning plainly. Like a guard stationed to see danger approaching, he was responsible to sound the alarm so that the guilty would have opportunity to turn from sin.

Ezk 3:18-19 If I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’…
Jer 18:11 Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents…
Isa 55:7 Let the wicked man forsake his way; let him return…

and he does not turn from it,

The warning does not remove the wicked man’s responsibility before God. He may reject the message and continue in rebellion, though he has been told the consequence.

Pro 29:1 A man who remains stiff-necked after much reproof…
Pro 1:24-25 Because you refused my call, and no one took…
Jer 7:27-28 When you tell them all these things, they will not listen…

he will die in his iniquity,

Persistent sin brings God’s judgment. The wicked man’s death is the result of his own iniquity, not a failure on Ezekiel’s part to make God’s warning known.

Ezk 18:4 Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son…
Jhn 8:24 That is why I told you that you would die in your sins.…
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God…

but you will have saved your life.

By faithfully carrying out his commission, Ezekiel would not bear guilt for the wicked man’s destruction. God held the watchman accountable for delivering the warning, while each person remained accountable for his own response.

1Ti 4:16 Pay close attention to your life and to your teaching.…
Act 20:26-27 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent…
Jas 5:20 Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way…

The Message of the Watchman

Now as for you, son of man,

God addresses Ezekiel by the title that emphasizes his human weakness before the sovereign Lord and his appointed role as God’s messenger to the exiles.

Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Ezk 3:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “eat what you find here.”…
Ezk 3:17 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house…

tell the house of Israel

The warning belongs to the whole covenant nation, whose rebellion had brought judgment and exile in Babylon.

Ezk 3:4 Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now…
Ezk 2:3 “Son of man,” He said to me, “I am sending you…
Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…

that this is what they have said:

The people have begun to admit the misery produced by their rebellion, though their confession is marked by despair.

1Ki 8:47 We have sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly…
Lev 26:40-42 But if they will confess their iniquity…
Dan 9:5-6 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly.…

‘Our transgressions and our sins are heavy upon us,

They recognize that their persistent disobedience has brought guilt and divine discipline upon them.

Psa 38:4 For my iniquities have overwhelmed me;…
Psa 40:12 For evils without number surround me; my sins have overtaken…
Ezr 9:6 O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed…

and we are wasting away because of them!

Their national ruin, exile, and suffering reveal sin’s destructive power.

Lev 26:39 Those of you who survive in the lands of your enemies…
Psa 31:10 For my life is consumed with grief and my years with groaning…
Isa 64:6 Each of us has become like something unclean,…

How can we live?’

Believing themselves beyond recovery, they ask whether restoration is possible. The question prepares for God’s declaration that He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked but calls them to turn and live.

Ezk 18:31-32 Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions…
Deu 30:19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…
Hos 14:1-2 Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God for you have stumbled…

Say to them:

God commissioned Ezekiel to speak His own words to Israel’s exiles in Babylon. The prophet was not delivering a personal opinion but a solemn message from the Lord to a people facing judgment.

Jer 1:17 Get yourself ready. Stand up and tell them everything…
Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…
Jer 26:2 This is what the LORD says: Stand in the courtyard…

‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,

The living and eternal God bound His declaration to His own life and authority. His warning and invitation were certain, not empty threats or passing emotion.

Num 14:21 Yet as surely as I live and as surely as the whole earth…
Ezk 20:33 As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Deu 32:40 For I lift up My hand to heaven and declare:…

I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked,

God’s judgment is righteous, yet He does not delight in human ruin. Israel’s rebellion had brought real consequences, but judgment was not His preferred outcome.

Ezk 18:23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked?…
Ezk 18:32 For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death,…
Jhn 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world…

but rather that the wicked should turn from their ways and live.

God called the wicked to abandon their sinful conduct and receive life rather than the death their rebellion deserved. Repentance meant a genuine return to obedience to Him.

Ezk 18:21 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins…
Ezk 18:27 But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness…
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise…

Turn! Turn from your evil ways!

The repeated appeal presses the urgency of Israel’s decision. Though Jerusalem had fallen and many were in exile, individuals remained responsible to turn from sin and seek the Lord.

Ezk 18:30 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you…
Jer 25:5 The prophets told you, ‘Turn now, each of you,…
Zec 1:4 Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets…

For why should you die, O house of Israel?’

God confronted the nation with the needless tragedy of refusing His call. Death would come through continued rebellion; life was held out to those who turned from their evil ways.

Ezk 18:31 Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions…
Deu 30:19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God…

Therefore, son of man, say to your people:

God again addresses Ezekiel as “son of man,” identifying him as a mortal man appointed to speak God’s words. Though living among the exiles in Babylon, Ezekiel remained responsible to warn and instruct his fellow Israelites.

Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…
Ezk 3:17 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house…

‘The righteousness of the righteous man will not deliver him in the day of his transgression;

A record of past obedience does not excuse deliberate rebellion. Each person stands before God according to his present response to His commands.

Ezk 18:24 But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness…
Ezk 18:26 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness…

neither will the wickedness of the wicked man cause him to stumble on the day he turns from his wickedness.

God does not deny mercy to the sinner who truly abandons wickedness. Repentance marks a real change of direction and brings forgiveness rather than inevitable judgment.

Ezk 18:27 But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness…
Pro 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper,…

Nor will the righteous man be able to survive by his righteousness on the day he sins.’

Israel could not rely on former faithfulness while persisting in sin. God requires continuing obedience, and no one’s own righteousness can secure life apart from His mercy.

Ezk 3:20 Now if a righteous man turns from his righteousness…
Ezk 14:14 then even if these three men—Noah, Daniel, and Job—…

If I tell the righteous man that he will surely live,

God’s promise of life required continued obedience. Ezekiel, appointed as a watchman for Israel, was responsible to warn individuals of God’s judgment and call them to turn from sin.

Ezk 18:9 He follows My statutes and faithfully keeps My ordinances.…
Pro 11:19 Genuine righteousness leads to life, but the pursuit…
Lev 18:5 Keep My statutes and My judgments, for the man who…

but he then trusts in his righteousness

Past faithfulness could become a source of pride and false security if a person presumed that former obedience excused later rebellion.

Luk 18:9-14 To some who trusted in their own righteousness,…
Rom 10:3 Because they were ignorant of God’s righteousness…
Php 3:9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness…

and commits iniquity,

Deliberate sin revealed a departure from the righteous path God commanded.

2Pe 2:20-22 If indeed they have escaped the corruption of the world…
Heb 10:26-27 If we deliberately go on sinning after we have received…
Rom 6:12-13 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body…

then none of his righteous works will be remembered;

God judges individuals according to their present response to His word; earlier righteous conduct did not cancel the guilt of unrepented sin.

Ezk 18:24 But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness…
1Co 3:13-15 his workmanship will be evident, because the Day…
Mat 6:1 Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men…

he will die because of the iniquity he has committed.

The judgment was personal and certain, underscoring Israel’s accountability before God and the necessity of turning from sin.

Ezk 18:26 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness…
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God…
Jas 1:15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;…

But if I tell the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’

God’s warning through Ezekiel declared the certain judgment awaiting those who remained in sin. Speaking to Israel in exile, Ezekiel upheld God’s righteousness while making clear that judgment was not arbitrary; the wicked were accountable for their conduct before the Lord.

Gen 2:17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge…
Ezk 18:4 Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son…
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God…

and he turns from his sin

God allowed no one to excuse continued rebellion as unavoidable. A wicked person who abandoned his sinful way and returned to obedience could live, demonstrating that the Lord receives genuine repentance rather than taking pleasure in judgment.

Ezk 18:21 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins…
Pro 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper,…
Isa 55:7 Let the wicked man forsake his way; let him return…

and does what is just and right—

Repentance was to be seen in a changed life. Restored faithfulness included honest dealings, respect for others, and obedience to God’s commands. Such conduct showed that the former wickedness had been forsaken and that the person had turned toward the way of life.

Ezk 18:27-28 But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness…
Gen 18:19 For I have chosen him, so that he will…
Mic 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good.…

if he restores a pledge,

Repentance required concrete action. Under Israel’s law, a creditor was not permitted to keep collateral needed for a poor man’s daily survival, such as his cloak overnight. Returning such a pledge showed renewed concern for justice and mercy.

Ezk 18:7 He does not oppress another, but restores the pledge…
Deu 24:12-13 If he is a poor man, you must not go to sleep…
Exo 22:26-27 If you take your neighbor’s cloak as collateral,…

makes restitution for what he has stolen,

Theft could not be addressed by words alone. The offender was required to return what had been taken and compensate the injured person. Genuine repentance repaired the damage where possible and acknowledged God’s standard of righteousness.

Lev 6:4-5 once he has sinned and becomes guilty, he must return…
Num 5:6-7 Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts…
Exo 22:1-4 If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters or sells it…

and walks in the statutes of life

God’s commands marked the way of life for His covenant people. Obedience demonstrated that a person had turned from the conduct that brought judgment and had returned to the Lord’s appointed path.

Ezk 20:11 And I gave them My statutes and made known to them…
Lev 18:5 Keep My statutes and My judgments, for the man who…
Deu 30:15-16 See, I have set before you today life and prosperity,…

without practicing iniquity—

A changed life involved abandoning ongoing rebellion, not merely regretting its consequences. The repentant sinner was to cease practicing iniquity, or moral wrongdoing and sin, and live according to God’s righteous requirements.

1Jn 3:9 Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin,…
Psa 119:3 They do no iniquity; they walk in His ways.
Psa 15:2 He who walks with integrity and practices righteousness…

then he will surely live; he will not die.

God assured the exiles that judgment was not unavoidable for those who truly turned from sin. The one who repented and obeyed would not die for his former wickedness but would receive life under God’s righteous judgment.

Jhn 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.”…
Pro 12:28 There is life in the path of righteousness, but…
Deu 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…

None of the sins he has committed will be held against him.

Ezekiel addressed the Babylonian exiles with God’s assurance that a wicked person who truly turns from sin is not bound by his former guilt. God judges each person according to his present response to His commands, granting forgiveness where repentance is genuine.

Ezk 18:22 None of the transgressions he has committed…
Psa 32:1-2 Of David. Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven…
Jer 31:34 No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother…

He has done what is just and right;

Repentance is shown in a changed life. The repentant person abandons injustice and returns to the standards God gave Israel through His law, treating others rightly and living in obedience to the Lord.

Ezk 18:5 Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just…
Gen 18:19 For I have chosen him, so that he will…
Mic 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good.…

he will surely live.

God promised preservation from the judgment deserved by sin. For the exiles, this included the hope of life under God’s restoring mercy; it also establishes the enduring truth that sin brings death, while forgiveness and obedience lead to life.

Ezk 18:21 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins…
Lev 18:5 Keep My statutes and My judgments, for the man who…
Deu 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…

Yet your people say,

The exiles openly complained against God, interpreting their judgment and displacement as evidence of unfairness. Though they had repeatedly broken the covenant through idolatry, violence, and rebellion, they viewed their suffering as undeserved.

Mal 3:13 “Your words against Me have been harsh,” says the LORD.…
Num 21:5 spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you led us…
Exo 16:8 And Moses added, “The LORD will give you meat to eat…

‘The way of the Lord is not just.’

Their charge repeated the objection raised earlier: they believed God judged individuals for the sins of others or held them accountable without regard for their present conduct. Ezekiel had made clear that each person would answer for his own sin and that repentance brought life.

Ezk 18:25 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’…
Job 34:10-12 Therefore listen to me, O men of understanding.…
Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just.…

But it is their way that is not just.

God’s judgment was righteous; the injustice lay in the people’s refusal to acknowledge their guilt while accusing Him of wrongdoing. Their exile resulted from persistent disobedience, yet God continued to call them to turn from sin and live.

Ezk 18:29 Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord’…
Pro 21:2 All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the LORD…
Pro 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end…

If a righteous man turns from his righteousness

Ezekiel rejects the belief that past obedience guarantees safety regardless of later rebellion. Each person stands before God according to his present course, and a life once marked by faithfulness can be abandoned through deliberate disobedience.

2Pe 2:20-22 If indeed they have escaped the corruption of the world…
Heb 6:4-6 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened…
Pro 14:14 The backslider in heart receives the fill of his own ways,…

and commits iniquity,

The man does not merely stumble but turns to wickedness, rejecting the conduct God requires. In Israel’s covenant life, such rebellion brought guilt upon the individual and could not be excused by former righteousness.

Heb 10:26-27 If we deliberately go on sinning after we have received…
Dan 9:5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly.…
1Jn 3:4-8 Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well…

he will die for it.

God’s judgment is impartial. The man bears responsibility for his own sin and faces the death his rebellion deserves. Past righteousness does not cancel unrepented iniquity.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God…
Jas 1:15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;…
Rom 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;…

But if a wicked man turns from his wickedness

Ezekiel addressed Israelites living in exile who were tempted to blame their condition on earlier generations. God held each person responsible for responding to His warning. A wicked person was not bound to remain in rebellion; turning from sin meant abandoning a course of disobedience and returning to God.

Pro 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper,…
Isa 55:7 Let the wicked man forsake his way; let him return…

and does what is just and right,

Repentance required more than regret. It produced a changed life marked by obedience, honest dealings, and faithful treatment of others according to God’s commands.

Pro 21:3 To do righteousness and justice is more desirable…
Deu 6:18 Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD,…

he will live because of this.

God promised life rather than judgment to the one who genuinely turned and lived righteously. The warning and promise affirmed that God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked but calls sinners to repent and live.

Deu 30:15-16 See, I have set before you today life and prosperity,…

Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’

The exiles charged God with unfairness, overlooking the nation’s long record of idolatry, violence, and covenant unfaithfulness. Their suffering was not arbitrary but the judgment God had warned would follow persistent rebellion.

Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just.…
Job 34:12 Indeed, it is true that God does not act wickedly,…

But I will judge each of you according to his ways,

God’s judgment was righteous and personal. Israel’s national ruin did not remove individual accountability; each person stood responsible for his own response to God’s commands and call to repent.

The entire covenant people were summoned to recognize both their privileged relationship with the Lord and their obligation to obey Him. Judgment confirmed God’s faithfulness to His word, even as His covenant purposes for Israel remained.

Word of Jerusalem’s Fall

In the twelfth year of our exile,

The exiles in Babylon dated events from King Jehoiachin’s deportation in 597 BC. Thus, the twelfth year of our exile refers to early 585 BC, several months after Jerusalem’s destruction.

Ezk 32:1 In the twelfth year, on the first day of the twelfth month,…
Ezk 1:2 On the fifth day of the month—it was the fifth year…

on the fifth day of the tenth month,

The date, the fifth day of the tenth month, carefully preserves the historical moment when the news of Jerusalem’s fall reached Ezekiel’s community.

Ezk 24:1-2 In the ninth year, on the tenth day of the tenth month,…
2Ki 25:1-2 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…

a fugitive from Jerusalem came to me

A survivor who had escaped the ruined city arrived in Babylon after the long journey across the desert.

Ezk 24:26-27 on that day a fugitive will come and tell you the news.…
2Ki 25:4-5 Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans…

and reported, “The city has been taken!”

Jerusalem had fallen to Babylon, the temple had been destroyed, and Judah’s rebellion had brought the judgment God had announced. The report confirmed Ezekiel’s earlier warnings and marked a turning point in his ministry, as his message would now increasingly address Israel’s future restoration.

Jer 39:2-5 And on the ninth day of the fourth month,…
Jer 52:6-7 By the ninth day of the fourth month, the famine in the city…

Now the evening before the fugitive arrived,

The evening before the fugitive arrived from Jerusalem with news of the city’s fall, the LORD prepared Ezekiel for the report, confirming that Babylon’s destruction of Jerusalem had occurred as God had warned.

Ezk 24:26-27 on that day a fugitive will come and tell you the news.…
2Ki 25:8-12 On the seventh day of the fifth month,…
Jer 39:8-10 The Chaldeans set fire to the palace of the king…

the hand of the LORD was upon me,

God’s power and direction rested on Ezekiel, making clear that the prophet’s message came by divine authority.

Ezk 1:3 The word of the LORD came directly to Ezekiel the priest…
Ezk 3:14 So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away…
Ezk 37:1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and He brought me out…

and He opened my mouth before the man came to me in the morning.

Ezekiel’s appointed silence was lifted before the fugitive arrived. The confirmed destruction of Jerusalem marked the end of his warnings concerning judgment.

Ezk 3:26-27 I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth…
Exo 4:11-12 And the LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth?…
Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……

So my mouth was opened and I was no longer mute.

Ezekiel could now speak freely to explain the meaning of Jerusalem’s fall and proclaim God’s future purposes for His people.

Luk 1:20-22 And now you will be silent and unable to speak…
Luk 1:64 Immediately Zechariah’s mouth was opened…
Isa 35:6 Then the lame will leap like a deer, and the mute tongue…

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

Ezekiel received a direct revelation from God after the fall of Jerusalem had been confirmed. Though the city lay in ruins and many survivors faced exile, the LORD continued to address His people through the prophet. What follows carries divine authority and confronts the false confidence of those remaining in the land.

Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Ezk 1:3 The word of the LORD came directly to Ezekiel the priest…
Ezk 3:16 At the end of seven days the word of the LORD came…

“Son of man,

God addresses Ezekiel as a mortal man chosen to carry His word, keeping the distinction between the holy Judge and His human messenger clear.

Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Ezk 3:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “eat what you find here.”…
Ezk 3:4 Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now…

those living in the ruins in the land of Israel

Survivors remained among the shattered cities and villages after Jerusalem’s fall, attempting to claim a future in a land devastated by Babylon’s invasion.

Ezk 36:4 therefore, O mountains of Israel,…
Ezk 12:19 Then tell the people of the land that this is what the Lord…
Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…

are saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land.

They appealed to God’s promise to Abraham as though descent from him guaranteed their right to remain.

Gen 15:7 The LORD also told him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out…
Gen 13:15 for all the land that you see, I will give to you…
Gen 17:8 And to you and your descendants I will give the land…

But we are many;

Their confidence rested on their numbers rather than on repentance and obedience.

Deu 10:22 Your fathers went down to Egypt, seventy in all,…
Gen 22:17 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply…
Gen 15:5 And the LORD took him outside and said, “Now look…

surely the land has been given to us as a possession.’

They presumed the land belonged to them despite the sins that had brought judgment upon Judah. Possession of the land was never a license to continue in bloodshed, idolatry, and rebellion against God.

Ezk 11:15 Son of man, your brothers—your relatives, your fellow exiles…
Num 33:53-54 You are to take possession of the land and settle in it…
Deu 1:8 See, I have placed the land before you. Enter and possess…

Therefore tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says:

Ezekiel delivers God’s direct verdict against those remaining in Judah after Jerusalem’s fall. Their confidence that they could still claim the land ignored the sins that had brought judgment upon the nation.

Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…
Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……
Deu 18:18-19 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…

‘You eat meat with the blood in it,

They disregarded God’s command that blood, representing life, was not to be consumed. Their conduct showed contempt for the covenant requirements given to Israel.

1Sa 14:32-34 So they rushed greedily to the plunder, taking sheep, cattle…
Lev 17:10-14 If anyone from the house of Israel or a foreigner…
Deu 12:23-25 Only be sure not to eat the blood, because the blood…

lift up your eyes to your idols,

Rather than worshiping the Lord alone, they looked to idols for help and security. Their idolatry continued the rebellion that had filled Judah before the exile.

Ezk 14:3 Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts…
Deu 4:19 When you look to the heavens and see the sun and moon…
Ezk 6:4-7 Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars…

and shed blood.

Violence and murder marked the land, revealing the corruption of a people who rejected God’s authority and oppressed others without justice.

Ezk 22:3 O city who brings her own doom by shedding blood…
Isa 59:3 For your hands are stained with blood, and your lips…
Pro 6:16-17 There are six things that the LORD hates,…

Should you then possess the land?

The land belonged to the Lord and had been given to Israel under His covenant. Those persisting in rebellion could not presume upon that gift or expect to remain in it.

Lev 18:28 So if you defile the land, it will vomit you out…
Lev 20:22 You are therefore to keep all My statutes and ordinances,…
Deu 4:25-26 After you have children and grandchildren…

You have relied on your swords,

They relied on violence and military strength to secure what God had given them.

Psa 44:3-7 For it was not by their sword that they took the land;…
Gen 27:40 You shall live by the sword and serve your brother.…
Gen 49:5-7 Simeon and Levi are brothers; their swords are weapons…

you have committed detestable acts,

This phrase indicts Israel for embracing idolatry and covenant-breaking practices that provoked God’s judgment.

Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Lev 18:26-30 But you are to keep My statutes and ordinances,…

and each of you has defiled his neighbor’s wife.

Their adultery exposed the moral collapse of the community and their disregard for God’s commands.

Lev 18:20 You must not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife…
Pro 6:29-33 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife;…

Should you then possess the land?’

Though they claimed Abraham’s promise, persistent rebellion made them unfit to remain in the land God had entrusted to them.

Lev 18:28 So if you defile the land, it will vomit you out…
Deu 4:25-26 After you have children and grandchildren…

Tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says:

Ezekiel delivers God’s own declaration, not a personal warning. The judgment announced against the survivors in Judah carries the full authority of the Lord.

Jer 21:4 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
Isa 7:7 But this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘It will not arise;…
Amo 1:3 For three transgressions of Damascus, even four,…

‘As surely as I live,

God’s oath rests on His eternal life and sovereign rule. What He has determined will certainly occur.

Num 14:21 Yet as surely as I live and as surely as the whole earth…
Jer 22:24 “As surely as I live,” declares the LORD,…
Deu 32:40 For I lift up My hand to heaven and declare:…

those in the ruins will fall by the sword,

Those remaining among Judah’s devastated towns after Babylon’s invasion will not escape further violence.

Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…
Jer 24:10 And I will send against them sword and famine and plague…
Lev 26:33 But I will scatter you among the nations…

those in the open field I will give to be devoured by wild animals,

People left exposed outside fortified places will face the dangers of a land emptied of protection and order.

Jer 15:3 I will appoint over them four kinds of destroyers,…
Jer 7:33 The corpses of this people will become food for the birds…
Lev 26:22 I will send wild animals against you…

and those in the strongholds and caves will die by plague.

Even those hiding in defensible places or remote shelters will find no refuge from the pestilence God sends. Sword, wild beasts, and plague together portray a judgment reaching every place where the people might seek safety.

Jdg 6:2 and the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel.…
Lev 26:25 And I will bring a sword against you to execute…
Deu 28:21 The LORD will make the plague cling to you…

I will make the land a desolate waste,

God announced judgment on Israel for persistent rebellion and idolatry. The Babylonian invasion would devastate the land, destroy its cities, and carry many of its people into exile. The loss of the land’s fruitfulness and security showed that Israel could not enjoy God’s covenant blessings while rejecting His rule.

Jer 4:27 For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land…
Jer 12:11 They have made it a desolation; desolate before Me…
Lev 26:31-33 I will reduce your cities to rubble and lay waste…

and the pride of her strength will come to an end.

Israel’s confidence in its fortified cities, military resources, and prosperity would prove empty. Jerusalem and the strongholds throughout the land could not withstand the army God brought against them. What the nation trusted in apart from Him would be brought down.

Ezk 30:6 For this is what the LORD says: The allies of Egypt…
Lev 26:19 I will break down your stubborn pride and make your sky…
Ezk 24:21 Tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says…

The mountains of Israel will become desolate,

The hills and mountains, often used for idolatrous high places, would be stripped of worshipers and inhabitants. Areas once associated with Israel’s strength, agriculture, and false worship would stand empty under God’s judgment.

Ezk 36:1-4 And you, son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel…
Ezk 6:2-3 Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel……

so that no one will pass through.

The devastation would be so complete that normal travel and settlement would cease. The abandoned land would bear witness to the seriousness of Israel’s unfaithfulness and to the certainty of God’s declared judgment.

Ezk 29:11 No foot of man or beast will pass through,…
Isa 34:10 It will not be quenched—day or night. Its smoke will ascend…
Jer 9:12 Who is the man wise enough to understand this?…

Then they will know that I am the LORD,

God’s judgment would make His sovereignty and authority unmistakable. Ezekiel repeatedly declares that both Israel and the nations would recognize that the God they had disregarded is the true Lord, righteous in both judgment and mercy.

Ezk 30:19 So I will execute judgment on Egypt, and they will know…
Ezk 6:7 The slain will fall among you, and you will know…
Exo 14:4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue…

when I have made the land a desolate waste

The Babylonian invasion brought this warning to fulfillment through the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in 586 BC. Fields, towns, and cities were devastated, and much of Judah’s population was killed, displaced, or taken into exile.

Isa 6:11-12 Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied……
Jer 25:11-12 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…
Lev 26:33-35 But I will scatter you among the nations…

because of all the abominations they have committed.’

Judah’s ruin was not arbitrary. Idolatry, violence, injustice, and the adoption of pagan worship had openly violated the covenant with God. The devastation of the land exposed the seriousness of their rebellion and confirmed the certainty of God’s word.

Lev 18:24-30 Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices,…
2Ki 21:11-15 Since Manasseh king of Judah has committed…
Jer 16:18 And I will first repay them double their iniquity…

As for you, son of man,

God again addresses Ezekiel as a human servant called to carry His word to Israel. Though set apart as a prophet, Ezekiel remains among the exiles and bears the burden of speaking to people who have repeatedly resisted God’s warnings.

Ezk 2:1-3 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Ezk 3:17 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house…
Dan 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified…

your people are talking about you

The exiles recognize Ezekiel as a figure of public interest. His prophecies have become a frequent subject of conversation, yet their attention does not necessarily show repentance or faith.

Psa 69:12 Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song…
Psa 109:2-3 For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me;…
Psa 31:13 For I hear the slander of many; there is terror…

near the city walls and in the doorways of their houses.

Public gathering places and household entrances become settings for discussion of Ezekiel’s messages. His ministry is widely known throughout the community rather than limited to a small group of listeners.

Pro 8:1-3 Does not wisdom call out, and understanding raise her voice?…
Jer 17:19-20 This is what the LORD said to me: “Go and stand…
Pro 1:20-21 Wisdom calls out in the street, she lifts her voice…

One speaks to another, each saying to his brother,

The people encourage one another to hear what Ezekiel has received. Their conversations create an appearance of interest in God’s word, but the following verses reveal that many listen without obeying.

Mal 3:16 At that time those who feared the LORD spoke…
Zec 8:21 and the residents of one city will go to another, saying:…
Isa 2:3 And many peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up…

‘Come and hear the message that has come from the LORD!’

They acknowledge that Ezekiel’s message comes from the LORD and gather to hear it. Their response, however, will expose the difference between outward interest and genuine submission to God.

Psa 66:16 Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will declare…
1Ki 22:14 As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak…
Deu 18:18-19 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…

So My people come to you as usual,

The exiles regularly gathered before Ezekiel to receive God’s message, especially amid the uncertainty and grief of the Babylonian captivity. Their attendance gave the appearance of reverence and spiritual concern.

Ezk 14:1 Then some of the elders of Israel came and sat down…
Isa 58:2 For day after day they seek Me and delight to know My ways…

sit before you,

They assumed the posture of listeners before a teacher, acknowledging Ezekiel’s role as God’s prophet while remaining unwilling to submit their lives to the word he delivered.

Ezk 20:1 In the seventh year, on the tenth day of the fifth month,…
Luk 10:39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet…

and hear your words;

They listened to Ezekiel’s warnings, promises, and calls to repentance, yet their hearing did not produce obedience.

Luk 8:18 Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen…
Jhn 10:27 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them…

but they do not put them into practice.

Their repeated refusal to obey exposed the emptiness of their outward interest in God’s message.

Mat 7:26 But everyone who hears these words of Mine…
Rom 2:13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous…

Although they express love with their mouths,

Their speech sounded devoted and affectionate, but it did not reflect sincere love for God or faithfulness to His commands.

Isa 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me…
Mrk 7:6 Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly…”…

their hearts pursue dishonest gain.

Beneath their religious appearance, they remained controlled by greed and self-interest, showing that their true loyalty was not to the Lord.

Jer 6:13 “For from the least of them to the greatest,…
Mic 3:11 Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach…

Indeed, you are to them like a singer of love songs with a beautiful voice,

The exiles listened to Ezekiel as an engaging speaker, drawn by the force and imagery of his messages, yet they did not receive him as the Lord’s messenger. Even after Jerusalem’s fall confirmed his warnings, many remained spectators rather than repentant hearers.

Isa 30:10 They say to the seers, “Stop seeing visions!”…
Jer 5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule…
2Ti 4:3-4 For the time will come when men will not tolerate…

who skillfully plays an instrument.

His prophetic ministry held their attention like a polished performance. They admired the delivery while resisting the judgment, obedience, and restoration God required.

1Sa 16:18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse…
Psa 33:3 Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy.
1Sa 16:23 And whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul…

They hear your words but do not put them into practice.

Their response exposed hardened hearts. Hearing Ezekiel’s warnings brought responsibility, but they continued in the same sins that had led Judah into exile.

Jas 1:22-24 Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.…
Luk 6:46-49 Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but do not do what I say?…
Mat 7:24-27 Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine…

So when it comes to pass—

Ezekiel’s warnings concerned the judgment God would bring on Judah for its rebellion, idolatry, and refusal to hear His prophets. The coming destruction was certain because God had spoken it.

Deu 18:22 When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD…
Jer 28:9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace,…

and surely it will come—

Though many doubted during the years before Jerusalem’s fall, the Babylonian invasion and exile would confirm that the announced judgment was not delayed indefinitely or merely threatened.

Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;…
Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…

then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

When Ezekiel’s words were fulfilled, the people would recognize that God had sent him. His ministry would stand vindicated, and their rejection of his message would be exposed as rebellion against the Lord.

Ezk 2:5 And whether they listen or refuse to listen…
1Sa 3:20 So all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew…
