Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling on one another. He began to say to his disciples first, "Be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.1Ἐν οἷς ἐπισυναχθεισῶν τῶν μυριάδων τοῦ ὄχλου ὥστε καταπατεῖν ἀλλήλους ἤρξατο λέγειν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ πρῶτον Προσέχετε ἑαυτοῖς ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης ἥτις ἐστὶν ὑπόκρισις τῶν Φαρισαίων
There is nothing covered that won't be uncovered, nothing hidden that won't be made known.2οὐδὲν δὲ συγκεκαλυμμένον ἐστὶν οὐκ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται καὶ κρυπτὸν οὐ γνωσθήσεται
Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.3ἀνθ’ ὧν ὅσα ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ εἴπατε ἐν τῷ φωτὶ ἀκουσθήσεται καὶ πρὸς τὸ οὖς ἐλαλήσατε ἐν τοῖς ταμείοις κηρυχθήσεται ἐπὶ τῶν δωμάτων
"I say to you, my friends, don't fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more.4Λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν τοῖς φίλοις μου μὴ φοβηθῆτε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποκτεινόντων* τὸ σῶμα καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα μὴ ἐχόντων περισσότερόν τι ποιῆσαι
But I will show you the one to fear: Fear him who has authority to throw people into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear!5ὑποδείξω δὲ ὑμῖν τίνα φοβηθῆτε φοβήθητε τὸν μετὰ τὸ ἀποκτεῖναι ἔχοντα ἐξουσίαν ἐμβαλεῖν εἰς τὴν γέενναν ναί λέγω ὑμῖν τοῦτον φοβήθητε
Aren't five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight.6Οὐχὶ πέντε στρουθία πωλοῦνται ἀσσαρίων δύο καὶ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐκ ἔστιν ἐπιλελησμένον ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ
Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.7ἀλλὰ καὶ αἱ τρίχες τῆς κεφαλῆς ὑμῶν πᾶσαι ἠρίθμηνται μὴ φοβεῖσθε πολλῶν στρουθίων διαφέρετε
"And I say to you, anyone who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God,8Λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν πᾶς ὃς ἂν ὁμολογήσῃ ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὁμολογήσει ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ Θεοῦ
but whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.9 δὲ ἀρνησάμενός με ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀπαρνηθήσεται ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ Θεοῦ
Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.10καὶ πᾶς ὃς ἐρεῖ λόγον εἰς τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀφεθήσεται αὐτῷ τῷ δὲ εἰς τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα βλασφημήσαντι οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται
Whenever they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities, don't worry about how you should defend yourselves or what you should say.11Ὅταν δὲ εἰσφέρωσιν ὑμᾶς ἐπὶ τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας μὴ μεριμνήσητε πῶς τί ἀπολογήσησθε τί εἴπητε
For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said."12τὸ γὰρ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα διδάξει ὑμᾶς ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ δεῖ εἰπεῖν
Someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."13Εἶπεν δέ τις ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλε εἰπὲ τῷ ἀδελφῷ μου μερίσασθαι μετ’ ἐμοῦ τὴν κληρονομίαν
"Friend," he said to him, "who appointed me a judge or arbitrator over you?"14 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἄνθρωπε τίς με κατέστησεν κριτὴν μεριστὴν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς
He then told them, "Watch out and be on guard against all greed, because one's life is not in the abundance of his possessions."15εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς Ὁρᾶτε καὶ φυλάσσεσθε ἀπὸ πάσης πλεονεξίας ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ περισσεύειν τινὶ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἐκ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐτῷ
Then he told them a parable: "A rich man's land was very productive.16Εἶπεν δὲ παραβολὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγων Ἀνθρώπου τινὸς πλουσίου εὐφόρησεν χώρα
He thought to himself, 'What should I do, since I don't have anywhere to store my crops?17καὶ διελογίζετο ἐν ἑαυτῷ λέγων Τί ποιήσω ὅτι οὐκ ἔχω ποῦ συνάξω τοὺς καρπούς μου
I will do this,' he said. 'I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there.18καὶ εἶπεν Τοῦτο ποιήσω καθελῶ μου τὰς ἀποθήκας καὶ μείζονας οἰκοδομήσω καὶ συνάξω ἐκεῖ πάντα τὸν σῖτον καὶ τὰ ἀγαθά μου
Then I'll say to myself, "You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself."'19καὶ ἐρῶ τῇ ψυχῇ μου Ψυχή ἔχεις πολλὰ ἀγαθὰ κείμενα εἰς ἔτη πολλά ἀναπαύου φάγε πίε εὐφραίνου
"But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared--whose will they be?'20Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Θεός Ἄφρων ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ τὴν ψυχήν σου ἀπαιτοῦσιν ἀπὸ σοῦ δὲ ἡτοίμασας τίνι ἔσται
"That's how it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God."21Οὕτως θησαυρίζων ἑαυτῷ* καὶ μὴ εἰς Θεὸν πλουτῶν
Then he said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, don't worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear.22Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ Διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ τί φάγητε μηδὲ τῷ σώματι (ὑμῶν) τί ἐνδύσησθε
For life is more than food and the body more than clothing.23 γὰρ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστιν τῆς τροφῆς καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος
Consider the ravens: They don't sow or reap; they don't have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them. Aren't you worth much more than the birds?24κατανοήσατε τοὺς κόρακας ὅτι οὐ* σπείρουσιν οὐδὲ* θερίζουσιν οἷς οὐκ ἔστιν ταμεῖον οὐδὲ ἀποθήκη καὶ Θεὸς τρέφει αὐτούς πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὑμεῖς διαφέρετε τῶν πετεινῶν
Can any of you add one moment to his life-span by worrying?25τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν μεριμνῶν δύναται ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλικίαν αὐτοῦ προσθεῖναι πῆχυν
If then you're not able to do even a little thing, why worry about the rest?26εἰ οὖν οὐδὲ ἐλάχιστον δύνασθε τί περὶ τῶν λοιπῶν μεριμνᾶτε
"Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don't labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these.27Κατανοήσατε τὰ κρίνα πῶς ‹αὐξάνει οὐ κοπιᾷ οὐδὲ νήθει› λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν οὐδὲ Σολομὼν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ περιεβάλετο ὡς ἓν τούτων
If that's how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will he do for you--you of little faith?28εἰ δὲ ἐν ἀγρῷ τὸν χόρτον ὄντα σήμερον καὶ αὔριον εἰς κλίβανον βαλλόμενον Θεὸς οὕτως ἀμφιέζει πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὑμᾶς ὀλιγόπιστοι
Don't strive for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don't be anxious.29Καὶ ὑμεῖς μὴ ζητεῖτε τί φάγητε καὶ τί πίητε καὶ μὴ μετεωρίζεσθε
For the Gentile world eagerly seeks all these things, and your Father knows that you need them.30ταῦτα γὰρ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τοῦ κόσμου ἐπιζητοῦσιν ὑμῶν δὲ Πατὴρ οἶδεν ὅτι χρῄζετε τούτων
"But seek his kingdom, and these things will be provided for you.31πλὴν ζητεῖτε τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ καὶ ταῦτα προστεθήσεται ὑμῖν
Don't be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom.32Μὴ φοβοῦ τὸ μικρὸν ποίμνιον ὅτι εὐδόκησεν Πατὴρ ὑμῶν δοῦναι ὑμῖν τὴν βασιλείαν
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won't grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.33Πωλήσατε τὰ ὑπάρχοντα ὑμῶν καὶ δότε ἐλεημοσύνην ποιήσατε ἑαυτοῖς βαλλάντια μὴ παλαιούμενα θησαυρὸν ἀνέκλειπτον ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς ὅπου κλέπτης οὐκ ἐγγίζει οὐδὲ σὴς διαφθείρει
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.34ὅπου γάρ ἐστιν θησαυρὸς ὑμῶν ἐκεῖ καὶ καρδία ὑμῶν ἔσται
"Be ready for service and have your lamps lit.35Ἔστωσαν ὑμῶν αἱ ὀσφύες περιεζωσμέναι καὶ οἱ λύχνοι καιόμενοι
You are to be like people waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.36καὶ ὑμεῖς ὅμοιοι ἀνθρώποις προσδεχομένοις τὸν κύριον ἑαυτῶν πότε ἀναλύσῃ ἐκ τῶν γάμων ἵνα ἐλθόντος καὶ κρούσαντος εὐθέως ἀνοίξωσιν αὐτῷ
Blessed will be those servants the master finds alert when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will get ready, have them recline at the table, then come and serve them.37μακάριοι οἱ δοῦλοι ἐκεῖνοι οὓς ἐλθὼν κύριος εὑρήσει γρηγοροῦντας ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι περιζώσεται καὶ ἀνακλινεῖ αὐτοὺς καὶ παρελθὼν διακονήσει αὐτοῖς
If he comes in the middle of the night, or even near dawn, and finds them alert, blessed are those servants.38κἂν ἐν τῇ δευτέρᾳ κἂν ἐν τῇ τρίτῃ φυλακῇ ἔλθῃ καὶ εὕρῃ οὕτως μακάριοί εἰσιν ἐκεῖνοι
But know this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.39Τοῦτο δὲ γινώσκετε ὅτι εἰ ᾔδει οἰκοδεσπότης ποίᾳ ὥρᾳ κλέπτης ἔρχεται (ἐγρηγόρησεν) οὐκ ἂν (καὶ) ἀφῆκεν διορυχθῆναι τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ
You also be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect."40καὶ ὑμεῖς γίνεσθε ἕτοιμοι ὅτι ὥρᾳ οὐ δοκεῖτε Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔρχεται
"Lord," Peter asked, "are you telling this parable to us or to everyone?"41Εἶπεν δὲ Πέτρος Κύριε πρὸς ἡμᾶς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην λέγεις καὶ πρὸς πάντας
The Lord said: "Who then is the faithful and sensible manager his master will put in charge of his household servants to give them their allotted food at the proper time?42Καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος Τίς ἄρα ἐστὶν πιστὸς οἰκονόμος φρόνιμος ὃν καταστήσει κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς θεραπείας αὐτοῦ τοῦ διδόναι ἐν καιρῷ τὸ σιτομέτριον
Blessed is that servant whom the master finds doing his job when he comes.43μακάριος δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ὃν ἐλθὼν κύριος αὐτοῦ εὑρήσει ποιοῦντα οὕτως
Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.44ἀληθῶς λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐπὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς ὑπάρχουσιν αὐτοῦ καταστήσει αὐτόν
But if that servant says in his heart, 'My master is delaying his coming,' and starts to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,45Ἐὰν δὲ εἴπῃ δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ Χρονίζει κύριός μου ἔρχεσθαι καὶ ἄρξηται τύπτειν τοὺς παῖδας καὶ τὰς παιδίσκας ἐσθίειν τε καὶ πίνειν καὶ μεθύσκεσθαι
that servant's master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unfaithful.46ἥξει κύριος τοῦ δούλου ἐκείνου ἐν ἡμέρᾳ οὐ προσδοκᾷ καὶ ἐν ὥρᾳ οὐ γινώσκει καὶ διχοτομήσει αὐτὸν καὶ τὸ μέρος αὐτοῦ μετὰ τῶν ἀπίστων θήσει
And that servant who knew his master's will and didn't prepare himself or do it will be severely beaten.47Ἐκεῖνος δὲ δοῦλος γνοὺς τὸ θέλημα τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ καὶ μὴ ἑτοιμάσας ποιήσας πρὸς τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ δαρήσεται πολλάς
But the one who did not know and did what deserved punishment will receive a light beating. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be expected.48 δὲ μὴ γνοὺς ποιήσας δὲ ἄξια πληγῶν δαρήσεται ὀλίγας παντὶ δὲ ἐδόθη πολύ πολὺ ζητηθήσεται παρ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ παρέθεντο πολύ περισσότερον αἰτήσουσιν αὐτόν
"I came to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze!49Πῦρ ἦλθον βαλεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τί θέλω εἰ ἤδη ἀνήφθη
But I have a baptism to undergo, and how it consumes me until it is finished!50βάπτισμα δὲ ἔχω βαπτισθῆναι καὶ πῶς συνέχομαι ἕως ὅτου τελεσθῇ
Do you think that I came here to bring peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.51Δοκεῖτε ὅτι εἰρήνην παρεγενόμην δοῦναι ἐν τῇ γῇ οὐχί λέγω ὑμῖν ἀλλ’ διαμερισμόν
From now on, five in one household will be divided: three against two, and two against three.52ἔσονται γὰρ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν πέντε ἐν ἑνὶ οἴκῳ διαμεμερισμένοι τρεῖς ἐπὶ δυσὶν καὶ δύο ἐπὶ τρισίν
They will be divided, father against son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."53διαμερισθήσονται πατὴρ ἐπὶ υἱῷ καὶ υἱὸς ἐπὶ πατρί μήτηρ ἐπὶ [τὴν] θυγατέρα καὶ θυγάτηρ ἐπὶ τὴν μητέρα πενθερὰ ἐπὶ τὴν νύμφην αὐτῆς καὶ νύμφη ἐπὶ τὴν πενθεράν
He also said to the crowds: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, right away you say, 'A storm is coming,' and so it does.54Ἔλεγεν δὲ καὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις Ὅταν ἴδητε [τὴν] νεφέλην ἀνατέλλουσαν ἐπὶ δυσμῶν εὐθέως λέγετε ὅτι Ὄμβρος ἔρχεται καὶ γίνεται οὕτως
And when the south wind is blowing, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is.55καὶ ὅταν νότον πνέοντα λέγετε ὅτι Καύσων ἔσται καὶ γίνεται
Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don't you know how to interpret this present time?56ὑποκριταί τὸ πρόσωπον τῆς γῆς καὶ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ οἴδατε δοκιμάζειν τὸν καιρὸν δὲ τοῦτον πῶς ‹οὐκ οἴδατε δοκιμάζειν›
"Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?57Τί δὲ καὶ ἀφ’ ἑαυτῶν οὐ κρίνετε τὸ δίκαιον
As you are going with your adversary to the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way. Then he won't drag you before the judge, the judge hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff throw you into prison.58ὡς γὰρ ὑπάγεις μετὰ τοῦ ἀντιδίκου σου ἐπ’ ἄρχοντα ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ δὸς ἐργασίαν ἀπηλλάχθαι ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ μή‿ ποτε κατασύρῃ σε πρὸς τὸν κριτήν καὶ κριτής σε παραδώσει τῷ πράκτορι καὶ πράκτωρ σε βαλεῖ εἰς φυλακήν
I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last cent."59λέγω σοι οὐ μὴ ἐξέλθῃς ἐκεῖθεν ἕως καὶ τὸ ἔσχατον λεπτὸν ἀποδῷς
