Berean Study Bible To the Church in EphesusEphesus was a leading city of Asia Minor, renowned for commerce, learning, and the temple of Artemis. Its church had been established through Paul’s ministry and faced the pressures of a wealthy pagan society. The angel is the heavenly representative of the congregation, showing that Christ’s message addresses the church under His direct authority. Eph 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,… These are the words of Him who holds the seven stars in His right hand Christ holds the angels of the churches with sovereign power, protection, and authority. No church or its appointed messenger stands independent of His rule. Rev 1:16 He held in His right hand seven stars, and a sharp… and walks among the seven golden lampstands. The lampstands are the churches themselves. Christ is present among His people, fully aware of their faithfulness, failures, and needs, and He speaks with the authority to commend, correct, and judge. Rev 1:12-13 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me.… I know your deeds, your labor, and your perseverance. Christ knew the Ephesian believers’ faithful service, costly work, and endurance under pressure. Ephesus was a prominent commercial and religious center dominated by the worship of Artemis, making Christian faithfulness difficult and often costly. 1Th 1:3 continually recalling before our God and Father… I know that you cannot tolerate those who are evil, The church had refused to accommodate open wickedness or compromise with the idolatry and immorality surrounding it. Their concern for holiness helped preserve the congregation’s witness in a hostile city. Psa 101:3-4 I will set no worthless thing before my eyes.… and you have tested and exposed as liars those who falsely claim to be apostles. False teachers had attempted to gain influence by claiming apostolic authority. The Ephesian church examined their teaching and conduct, recognized their claims as false, and protected the congregation from deception. 2Co 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers… Without growing weary, The believers in Ephesus had continued faithfully despite sustained pressure and hardship. Their endurance showed that opposition had not silenced their service to Christ. Gal 6:9 Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time…… you have persevered The church had remained steadfast through trials and had not abandoned its commitment to the truth. They had resisted false teachers and continued in the work entrusted to them. Heb 10:36 You need to persevere, so that after you have done… and endured many things Their hardships likely included hostility from pagan society, conflict with those who rejected the gospel, and the burden of guarding the church from corrupt teaching. These were real costs of belonging to Christ in a prominent center of Roman religion and commerce. Heb 10:32-34 Remember the early days that you were in the light.… for the sake of My name. Their endurance was not driven by personal reputation or gain, but by loyalty to Jesus Christ. They had suffered because they bore His name and remained identified with His authority and message. Mat 10:22 You will be hated by everyone because of My name,… But I have this against you: Jesus’ commendation of the Ephesian church is followed by a serious rebuke. Though they had persevered, rejected false teachers, and endured hardship for His name, He knew their inward spiritual condition. Their outward faithfulness did not excuse a failure of wholehearted devotion. Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,… You have abandoned your first love. The church had departed from the early love that marked its life when it was established through Paul’s ministry. Their devotion to Christ and their love for one another had diminished, leaving duty without the warmth and priority of genuine affection. Jesus calls them to recognize that spiritual vigilance and doctrinal faithfulness must remain joined to sincere love for Him. Jer 2:2 “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem…… Therefore, keep in mind how far you have fallen. The Ephesian church had remained active in doctrine and discipline, yet it had departed from the love that once marked its devotion to Christ and care for others. They were to remember their earlier condition and recognize the seriousness of their decline. Lam 3:40 Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD. Repent and perform the deeds you did at first. They were commanded to turn from their present condition and return to the loving obedience that had characterized their beginning. Their renewed love was to be demonstrated through faithful service, care for one another, and steadfast witness to Christ. Act 26:20 First to those in Damascus and Jerusalem,… But if you do not repent, Refusal to turn back would bring judgment upon the congregation. Christ’s warning shows that continued outward activity cannot replace genuine devotion to Him. Luk 13:3 No, I tell you. But unless you repent, … I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. Christ would remove the church’s place as His light-bearing witness in Ephesus. Without repentance, the congregation would no longer fulfill its calling as a visible and effective church in that city. Mat 21:43 Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God…… But you have this to your credit: Though the Ephesian church had abandoned its former devotion, it remained vigilant against corruption within the congregation. 1Pe 2:19 For if anyone endures the pain of unjust suffering… You hate the works of the Nicolaitans, The Nicolaitans promoted conduct that compromised Christian holiness, apparently encouraging participation in idolatrous practices and sexual immorality. The believers in Ephesus refused to accept such teaching or the behavior it produced. Eph 5:11 Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds… which I also hate. Christ shared their rejection of these corrupt works. Their discernment and refusal to tolerate evil were commendable, even as they needed to return to their first love. Heb 1:9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;… He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Christ calls every believer to receive the Spirit’s message with faith and discernment. Though addressed to seven actual congregations in Asia Minor, the instruction applies to churches throughout the age. Rev 3:6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says… To the one who overcomes, The overcomer remains faithful to Christ amid false teaching, persecution, temptation, and spiritual opposition. Victory belongs to those who persevere by faith in Him. Rev 3:21 To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right… I will grant the right to eat from the tree of life The tree of life, barred to humanity after the fall, will again be available to the redeemed. It signifies the full and unending life granted by God to those delivered from sin and death. Rev 22:14 Blessed are those who wash their robes,… in the Paradise of God. God will restore what sin ruined in Eden. His people will dwell forever in His presence in the renewed creation, enjoying perfect fellowship, peace, and life. Luk 23:43 And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you,…
To the Church in SmyrnaSmyrna was a prosperous port city in Asia Minor and a leading center of emperor worship. Christians there faced hostility because they would not offer worship to Rome or acknowledge the emperor as divine. The angel likely represents the church’s appointed messenger or spiritual leader. Rev 1:20 This is the mystery of the seven stars you saw in My right hand… These are the words of the First and the Last, Christ rules over history, nations, and every power that opposed His people. His eternal authority assured the believers in Smyrna that their persecutors did not have the final word. Rev 1:17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man.… who died and returned to life. Jesus truly died and rose bodily from the grave. His victory over death gave the suffering church confidence that faithful believers would share in eternal life, even if persecution led to martyrdom. Rev 1:18 the Living One. I was dead, and behold, now I am alive… I know your affliction and your poverty—though you are rich! The believers in Smyrna endured persecution and economic hardship in a prosperous city. Their refusal to compromise with pagan worship and imperial loyalty likely brought exclusion from trade, public life, and social support. Christ measured their condition differently from the world: though materially poor, they possessed the lasting riches of faith, endurance, and their standing before God. 2Co 8:2-3 In the terrible ordeal they suffered, their abundant joy… And I am aware of the slander of those who falsely claim to be Jews, Certain members of the local Jewish community opposed the Christians and brought accusations against them. Their claim to belong to God’s people was contradicted by their rejection of Christ and their hostility toward His church. The issue was not ethnic descent but allegiance to the Messiah and obedience to God. Rom 2:28-29 A man is not a Jew because he is one outwardly,… but are in fact a synagogue of Satan. By working to harm Christ’s followers, these opponents served Satan’s purposes rather than God’s. Their gathering had become a center of opposition to the gospel, revealing the spiritual conflict behind Smyrna’s persecution. Rev 3:9 As for those who belong to the synagogue of Satan,… Do not fear what you are about to suffer. The believers in Smyrna faced coming persecution, yet Christ commanded them not to be ruled by fear. Their suffering would not escape His knowledge or control. Mat 10:28-31 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body… Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, Satan stood behind the opposition, working through earthly authorities to imprison Christians for their allegiance to Christ. The trial would reveal the reality and endurance of their faith. Luk 22:31-32 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you like wheat.… and you will suffer tribulation for ten days. The suffering would be severe but limited. Christ set its duration, showing that even persecution remained under His authority. Dan 1:12-15 Please test your servants for ten days… Be faithful even unto death, Some would be called to die rather than deny the Lord. Their loyalty to Christ was to remain firm regardless of the cost. Rev 12:11 They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb… and I will give you the crown of life. Christ promised eternal life and victory to those who persevered. What persecution could take from them in this world could not compare with the life He would give them. Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial… He who has an ear, let him hear The risen Christ calls for attentive, obedient reception of God’s word. Mat 11:15 He who has ears, let him hear. what the Spirit says to the churches. The Holy Spirit addresses not only Smyrna but all congregations, making the warning and promise relevant to the whole church. Rev 3:6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says… The one who overcomes Those who remain faithful to Christ through pressure, suffering, and persecution share in His victory. Rev 3:21 To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right… will not be harmed by the second death. Though believers may face physical death, they are secure from the final judgment of eternal separation from God in the lake of fire. Rev 20:6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection…
To the Church in PergamumChrist addresses the angel assigned to the congregation in Pergamum, a prominent Roman city marked by imperial worship and major pagan temples. Believers lived under strong pressure to compromise with idolatry and the surrounding culture. Rev 1:20 This is the mystery of the seven stars you saw in My right hand… These are the words of the One who holds the sharp, double-edged sword. The risen Christ speaks with divine authority to judge sin, expose false teaching, and defend His people. His sword portrays the certainty and precision of His judgment within the church. Rev 1:16 He held in His right hand seven stars, and a sharp… I know where you live, Christ knew the pressures facing the church in Pergamum, a prominent city marked by political power, pagan religion, and emperor worship. Psa 139:1-3 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD,… where the throne of Satan sits, Pagan temples, the imperial cult, and the city’s public devotion to false gods made Pergamum a center of spiritual opposition to the church. Jhn 12:31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the prince… yet you hold fast to My name. The believers remained loyal to Christ and refused to compromise their confession in order to gain safety or acceptance. Rev 3:8 I know your deeds. Behold, I have placed before you… You did not deny your faith in Me, Their steadfastness endured even when faithfulness brought public hostility and danger. Mat 10:33 But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny… even in the days of My faithful witness Antipas, Antipas bore witness to Christ with the same faithful testimony required of all who belong to Him. Rev 1:5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness,… who was killed among you His martyrdom occurred in Pergamum and showed the deadly cost of rejecting idolatry and emperor worship. Act 22:20 And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was shed,… where Satan dwells. The repeated description underscores the depth of evil at work in the city, yet the church had not abandoned Christ. 1Jn 5:19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world… But I have a few things against you, Jesus turns from commending the church’s faithfulness to confronting sins tolerated within its fellowship. Mic 6:2 Hear, O mountains, the LORD’s indictment,… because some of you hold to the teaching of Balaam, Balaam sought to profit from Balak’s desire to harm Israel and counseled a strategy that drew Israelites away from obedience to God. 2Pe 2:15-16 They have left the straight way and wandered off… who taught Balak to place a stumbling block before the Israelites Rather than defeating Israel by curse, Balak used temptation to lead them into disobedience. Num 31:16 Look, these women caused the sons of Israel,… so they would eat food sacrificed to idols Some in Pergamum were compromising with the idolatrous culture around them by participating in pagan religious meals. Act 15:29 You must abstain from food sacrificed to idols,… and commit sexual immorality. Such involvement joined idolatry with conduct forbidden by God and corrupted the church’s witness. 1Co 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin… In the same way, In the same way, the Nicolaitans promoted compromise with pagan culture, encouraging idolatry and sexual immorality among believers in Pergamum, much like the teaching associated with Balaam. Num 25:1-3 While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began… some of you also hold The corruption was not shared by the entire congregation; however, some members had accepted and continued to follow these practices. Act 20:30 Even from your own number, men will rise up… to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Their influence threatened the church’s faithfulness to Christ by treating participation in pagan life as compatible with Christian allegiance. 2Pe 2:1-3 Now there were also false prophets among the people… Therefore repent! Pergamum was tolerating teachers who promoted idolatry and sexual immorality among believers. Christ demanded a decisive turning from these compromises, not merely regret but renewed obedience to His truth. Act 3:19 Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped… Otherwise I will come to you shortly If the church refused correction, Christ would personally discipline it. His coming refers to a near judgment upon the congregation, as He would not permit false teaching to remain unchecked among His people. Rev 3:11 I am coming soon. Hold fast to what you have,… and wage war against them Christ’s judgment would fall particularly on those advancing corrupt doctrine and leading others into sin. Their rebellion against His authority placed them in opposition to Him. Rev 19:11 Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me… with the sword of My mouth. The sword represents Christ’s authoritative word, which exposes deception, condemns sin, and executes righteous judgment. The teachers who distorted the faith would be judged by the Lord whose word cannot be resisted. Rev 19:15 And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword… He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The Holy Spirit speaks Christ’s message to every congregation, calling believers to receive both His warnings and His promises with obedience and discernment. Rev 3:22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says… To the one who overcomes, The promise belongs to those who remain faithful to Christ through temptation, opposition, false teaching, and suffering. Rev 3:21 To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right… I will give the hidden manna. As God sustained Israel with manna in the wilderness, Christ will provide eternal spiritual nourishment to His faithful people, reserved from the unbelieving world. Exo 16:32-34 Keep an omer of manna for the generations to come,… I will also give him a white stone The white stone signifies acceptance, vindication, and victory before God, marking the believer as belonging to Christ. 1Pe 2:4-5 As you come to Him, the living stone, rejected by men… inscribed with a new name, The new name represents the believer’s renewed identity and place in God’s kingdom. Rev 3:12 The one who overcomes I will make a pillar… known only to the one who receives it. The name points to the personal and individual relationship Christ has with each faithful believer. Rev 19:12 He has eyes like blazing fire, and many royal crowns…
To the Church in ThyatiraChrist addresses the congregation through its appointed messenger. Thyatira was a prosperous trade city whose guilds shaped civic and economic life, often linking business participation with pagan worship. These pressures formed part of the church’s struggle to remain faithful. Rev 1:11 “Write on a scroll what you see and send it”… These are the words of the Son of God, Jesus speaks with the authority of the divine King and Judge, not merely as a teacher or prophet. Jhn 1:49 “Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God!”… whose eyes are like a blazing fire Nothing within the church escapes His sight. He sees both sincere service and concealed compromise. Rev 1:14 The hair of His head was white like wool, as white as snow,… and whose feet are like polished bronze. His strength is pure and unshakable, and He stands ready to judge evil and uphold His people. Rev 1:15 His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace,… I know your deeds— The risen Christ sees the full life of the church in Thyatira, including both its public ministry and its hidden conduct. Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind… your love, Their care for God and for one another was evident in the congregation. Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.… your faith, They continued to trust Christ amid the pressures of a city marked by trade guilds and pagan worship. Heb 10:22-23 let us draw near with a sincere heart… your service, Their faith produced practical ministry rather than remaining a profession alone. 1Pe 4:10-11 As good stewards of the manifold grace of God,… your perseverance— They had endured opposition and difficulty without abandoning their confession. Heb 10:36 You need to persevere, so that after you have done… and your latest deeds are greater than your first. Unlike churches that had declined, the believers in Thyatira had grown in fruitful service over time. 1Th 4:1 Finally, brothers, we ask and encourage you… But I have this against you: Jesus commends Thyatira’s love, faith, service, and perseverance, yet their growth has not removed a serious corruption within the congregation that requires judgment. Rev 3:19 Those I love I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest… You tolerate that woman Jezebel, A woman in the church had become a destructive influence like Queen Jezebel, who promoted Baal worship and led Israel into idolatry under Ahab. The church had allowed her influence to continue rather than confronting it. 1Ki 16:31 And as if it were not enough for him to walk… who calls herself a prophetess. She claimed authority to speak for God, using that claim to gain influence among believers despite teaching contrary to Christ’s commands. Ezk 13:17-19 Now, O son of man, set your face against the daughters… By her teaching she misleads My servants Her error was not private but actively drew Christ’s people away from obedience. Those she misled belonged to Jesus, making the church’s tolerance of her teaching especially serious. Act 20:29-30 I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come… to be sexually immoral and to eat food sacrificed to idols. She encouraged participation in pagan practices common in Thyatira’s trade guilds and religious life. Such compromise joined believers to idolatrous worship and immorality, rejecting the holiness Christ requires of His church. Act 15:20 Instead, we should write and tell them to abstain… Even though I have given her time to repent of her immorality, Christ had patiently allowed the woman called Jezebel in Thyatira to abandon her corrupt teaching and conduct. Like the Old Testament Jezebel, she was leading believers toward idolatry and sexual sin, likely through the pagan feasts and guild practices common in the city. 2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise… she is unwilling. Her refusal was deliberate despite Christ’s warning and patience. She persisted in deceiving believers and promoting compromise, bringing judgment upon herself and a warning to the church not to tolerate her influence. Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets… Behold, I will cast her onto a bed of sickness, Jesus declares certain judgment against Jezebel, whose influence had drawn members of the Thyatiran church into idolatry and sexual immorality. The bed associated with her sin would become a place of suffering under God’s discipline. 2Ki 1:4 Therefore this is what the LORD says: … and those who commit adultery with her Those who accepted her teaching and joined in her practices shared her guilt. Their adultery included the sexual immorality connected with pagan worship and the spiritual unfaithfulness of abandoning devotion to Christ. Ezk 16:32 You adulterous wife! You receive strangers… will suffer great tribulation Severe affliction would fall on those who persisted in her sins. This judgment was directed particularly at the offenders in Thyatira and demonstrated Christ’s authority over His churches. Mat 24:21 For at that time there will be great tribulation,… unless they repent of her deeds. Deliverance remained open to those who turned from Jezebel’s works. Repentance required abandoning both her false teaching and the sinful practices it produced. Rev 16:11 curse the God of heaven for their pains and sores.… Then I will strike her children dead, Her “children” are those who have embraced and continued in her idolatry and immorality. Their death is a direct act of judgment against those who persist in rebellion within the church. 2Ki 10:1-11 Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. So Jehu wrote letters… and all the churches will know Christ’s judgment in Thyatira would become a warning to the other congregations. What occurred in one church would demonstrate His authority over all of them. Rev 3:9 As for those who belong to the synagogue of Satan,… that I am the One who searches minds and hearts, Christ sees beyond outward profession to the thoughts, desires, and motives of every person. No hidden sin or false loyalty escapes His knowledge. Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind… and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. Each person is accountable before Christ for what he or she has done. Deeds reveal whether a person has remained faithful to Him or has joined in sin and false worship. Rom 2:6 God “will repay each one according to his deeds.” But I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, Thyatira was a commercial city in the Roman province of Asia, known for its trade guilds, textile production, and dyeing industry. Its Christians faced pressure to participate in guild-related pagan practices. Christ addresses those in the church who had remained faithful while others tolerated corrupt influence. Rom 11:5 In the same way, at the present time there is a remnant… who do not hold to her teaching Jezebel was likely a woman within the church whose name recalled the Old Testament queen who promoted idolatry in Israel. She encouraged believers to compromise with pagan worship and sexual immorality. Those who rejected her teaching had refused to join in that compromise. 1Ti 1:3-4 As I urged you on my departure to Macedonia,… and have not learned the so-called deep things of Satan: Her followers apparently claimed access to hidden spiritual knowledge, presenting their error as deeper insight. Christ identifies such teaching as satanic because it drew believers away from truth, holiness, and loyalty to Him. 1Co 2:10-12 But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit.… I will place no further burden upon you The faithful were not given additional demands beyond continuing to reject false teaching and remain steadfast in obedience to Christ. Act 15:28-29 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us… than to hold fast Christ directs the faithful believers in Thyatira to remain steadfast amid the church’s compromise with false teaching and immorality. Heb 10:23 Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess… to what you have They were to preserve the true faith and obedience already received from Christ rather than yield to surrounding pressure. Rev 3:11 I am coming soon. Hold fast to what you have,… until I come. His return would bring judgment on the unfaithful and vindication for those who remained loyal to Him. 1Co 11:26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup,… And to the one who overcomes The promise belongs to believers who remain loyal to Christ amid deception, persecution, and pressure to compromise. Overcoming marks those whose faith endures to the end. Rev 21:7 The one who overcomes will inherit all things,… and continues in My work until the end, Faithfulness includes steadfast obedience and service in the responsibilities Christ gives His people. The end may include the completion of a believer’s earthly life and ultimately Christ’s return and the close of the present age. Mat 24:13 But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. I will give authority over the nations. Christ will share His future rule with His faithful people. At His kingdom reign, the nations will be subject to His righteous authority, and those who have endured with Him will participate in His judgment and administration. Psa 2:8-9 Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance,… He will rule them with an iron scepter Christ will exercise absolute and righteous authority over the nations. His reign will not be weakened by rebellion or rival powers, but will establish God’s justice throughout the earth. Psa 2:9 You will break them with an iron scepter;… and shatter them like pottery— Those who persist in opposing His rule will face decisive judgment. Human kingdoms and powers, however strong they appear, are fragile before the authority of the risen King. Jer 19:11 this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I will shatter… just as I have received authority from My Father. The Son rules by the authority entrusted to Him by the Father. His judgment and kingdom fulfill God’s purpose, carried out in perfect unity with the Father’s will. Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.… And I will give him Jesus promises a personal reward to those who remain faithful amid pressure, deception, and moral compromise. The believers in Thyatira were called to reject false teaching and endure in obedience until Christ’s return. Rev 3:21 To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right… the morning star. The morning star points to Jesus Christ, the risen King whose coming brings the dawn of His eternal kingdom. Those who overcome will share in His victory, glory, and reign when He finally defeats evil and establishes His rule. Rev 22:16 I, Jesus, have sent My angel to give you this testimony… He who has an ear, The repeated call demands careful spiritual discernment. Christ’s words are addressed to all who are willing to receive God’s truth rather than merely hear it outwardly. Rev 13:9 He who has an ear, let him hear: let him hear Hearing requires a response of faith and obedience to what has been revealed. Mrk 4:9 Then Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” what the Spirit says The Holy Spirit speaks with divine authority through the messages Christ gives to His churches, exposing sin, commending faithfulness, and calling believers to repentance and perseverance. Heb 3:7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear…”… to the churches. Though directed to the seven congregations of Asia Minor, these messages instruct Christ’s churches in every age. Each congregation was accountable to the risen Lord, who knew its condition and required faithfulness to His word. Rev 1:4 John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia:… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
