because the Son of Man
The title "Son of Man" is a messianic term that Jesus frequently uses for Himself. It originates from Daniel 7:13-14, where the Son of Man is given authority, glory, and sovereign power. This title emphasizes both Jesus' humanity and His divine authority. It is a reminder of His role as the prophesied Messiah who will return to establish His kingdom.

will come at an hour
The certainty of Jesus' return is affirmed here, but the timing is deliberately left unknown. This unpredictability serves as a test of faith and commitment for believers. The phrase "at an hour" underscores the suddenness and unexpected nature of His coming, which is a recurring theme in eschatological teachings (1 Thessalonians 5:2).

you do not expect.
This final phrase highlights the element of surprise associated with the Second Coming. It serves as a warning against complacency and spiritual lethargy. The unexpected nature of His return is meant to encourage constant vigilance and readiness, as seen in the parable of the thief in the night (Matthew 24:43). This unpredictability is a call to live each day in a manner that honors God, as no one knows when the Lord will return.

Matthew 24:44 opens, “For this reason….” The phrase reaches back to Jesus’ warning in verses 37–43: life before the flood looked normal until judgment suddenly came, and a thief gives no advance notice before breaking in.

• Just as Noah’s neighbors were caught off guard (Matthew 24:38–39), people today can drift into complacency.

• Paul echoes this in 1 Thessalonians 5:2, “the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night,” pressing the same urgency.

• Peter adds that the heavens and earth are reserved for fire (2 Peter 3:7–10), underscoring that previous judgments guarantee a future, literal one.

Therefore, the “reason” is clear: past acts of sudden divine intervention certify that more are coming.

The command is personal—“you also.” Readiness isn’t optional for disciples.

• Peter urges, “prepare your minds for action” (1 Peter 1:13).

• Paul pictures believers standing in armor, “having girded your waist with truth” (Ephesians 6:14).

Practical marks of readiness:

– Consistent repentance (1 John 1:9).

– Active obedience (John 14:15).

– Stewardship of time and gifts (Luke 12:42–44).

– Gathering with other believers (Hebrews 10:24–25).

Readiness means living every day as though Jesus could appear before the next.

“Son of Man” is Jesus’ favorite self-title, pointing to Daniel 7:13–14 where One “coming with the clouds of heaven” receives an everlasting kingdom.

• Jesus confirms this identity at His trial: “You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power” (Matthew 26:64).

• His humanity (“Son of Man”) and deity (“coming with the clouds”) assure us He is both sympathetic High Priest (Hebrews 4:15) and sovereign Judge (Acts 17:31).

The second advent is as literal as the first.

• The angels declared, “This same Jesus…will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).

• Jesus promises, “I will come again and receive you to Myself” (John 14:3).

• Revelation 22:12 records His closing words, “Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me.”

His coming is not symbolic or merely spiritual; it is a promised, visible return.

The timing is hidden to keep hearts alert.

• Jesus says, “concerning that day or hour no one knows…only the Father” (Mark 13:32–33).

• John records, “Blessed is the one who stays awake” (Revelation 16:15).

• Believers are urged, “So then, let us not sleep as the others do, but let us remain awake and sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:6).

The unpredictability eliminates procrastination; today is the only guaranteed opportunity to be ready.

Matthew 24:44 calls every believer to live in a perpetual state of spiritual readiness. History proves God judges suddenly; prophecy guarantees Jesus will return. Because the Son of Man is coming without warning, wise disciples repent quickly, obey wholeheartedly, serve faithfully, and watch expectantly—confident that the Lord will keep His word exactly as spoken.
