Isaiah 63

God’s Vengeance on the Nations

Who is this coming from Edom,

Edom, descended from Esau and located southeast of Judah, had long opposed Israel and rejoiced over Jerusalem’s disasters. It stands here as the place where the Lord’s judgment falls on Israel’s enemies.

Jdg 5:4-5 O LORD, when You went out from Seir, when You marched…
Isa 34:5 When My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens,…
Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.…

from Bozrah with crimson-stained garments?

Bozrah was a leading Edomite city. The bloodstained clothing pictures a warrior returning after crushing those under judgment.

Isa 34:6 The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood.…
Rev 19:13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,…
Gen 49:11 He ties his donkey to the vine, his colt to the choicest…

Who is this robed in splendor,

The Lord appears in majesty, openly displaying His authority as Judge and King.

Psa 104:1-2 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God,…
Psa 45:3-4 Strap your sword at your side, O mighty warrior;…
Dan 10:5-6 I lifted up my eyes, and behold, there was a certain man…

marching in the greatness of His strength?

No enemy can resist His power. He advances with complete authority to carry out His purposes.

Hab 3:12-13 You marched across the earth with fury…
Psa 24:8 Who is this King of Glory? The LORD strong and mighty…
Exo 15:3 The LORD is a warrior, the LORD is His name.

“It is I, proclaiming vindication,

The speaker is the Lord Himself, declaring that He acts in righteousness to vindicate His name and His people.

Isa 46:13 I am bringing My righteousness near; it is not far away…
Isa 43:10-11 “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD…
Rev 19:11 Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me…

mighty to save.”

The One who judges the nations is also fully able to rescue and redeem those who belong to Him.

Zep 3:17 The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save.…
Isa 49:26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh;…
Psa 98:1-3 A Psalm. Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done wonders…

Why are Your clothes red,

The returning warrior bears garments stained as though with blood, revealing that He has come from executing judgment. The red clothing portrays the reality and severity of divine wrath against sin and rebellion.

Rev 19:13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,…
Gen 49:11 He ties his donkey to the vine, his colt to the choicest…

and Your garments like one who treads the winepress?

Winepress workers emerged stained by crushed grapes beneath their feet. The image portrays the Lord’s enemies as grapes crushed under His judgment, emphasizing that His justice is deliberate, complete, and unavoidable.

Rev 19:15 And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword…
Lam 1:15 The Lord has rejected all the mighty men in my midst;…
Jol 3:13 Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe.…

“I have trodden the winepress alone,

The Lord is pictured as a warrior crushing His enemies as grapes in a winepress. No human deliverer could accomplish the judgment required against the nations that opposed His purposes.

Rev 19:15 And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword…
Jol 3:13 Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe.…
Rev 14:19-20 So the angel swung his sickle over the earth…

and no one from the nations was with Me.

Israel’s hope did not rest in foreign alliances or military strength. The Lord alone acted to save His people and to judge the powers arrayed against them.

Deu 32:12 The LORD alone led him, and no foreign god was with him.
Isa 59:16 He saw that there was no man; He was amazed.…
Isa 41:28 When I look, there is no one; there is no counselor.…

I trampled them in My anger and trod them down in My fury;

God’s wrath is directed against persistent rebellion, violence, and defiance of His rule. The image portrays decisive, righteous judgment rather than an uncontrolled outburst.

Dan 7:23 This is what he said: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom…
Lam 1:15 The Lord has rejected all the mighty men in my midst;…
Psa 2:5 Then He rebukes them in His anger…

their blood spattered My garments,

The destruction of the wicked is portrayed in stark terms, showing the severity of divine judgment and the cost of human sin.

Rev 19:13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,…
Gen 49:11 He ties his donkey to the vine, his colt to the choicest…
Isa 34:6 The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood.…

and all My clothes were stained.

The stained garments testify that the judgment was complete. The imagery anticipates the final defeat of God’s enemies by the Messiah, who alone executes justice and brings salvation.

Isa 9:5 For every trampling boot of battle and every garment…
Gen 37:31 Then they took Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a young goat,…
Jer 2:34 Moreover, your skirts are stained with the blood…

For the day of vengeance was in My heart,

God had determined to judge the nations that had violently opposed His people. His wrath was not impulsive; it was a settled and righteous response to their rebellion, cruelty, and pride.

Isa 34:8 For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense…
Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…
Psa 94:1 O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth.

and the year of My redemption had come.

At the appointed time, God would deliver and restore Israel, preserving His covenant people while bringing judgment on their enemies. Vengeance and redemption would occur together: the downfall of Israel’s oppressors would accompany the rescue of those God had chosen.

Lev 25:10 So you are to consecrate the fiftieth year…
Luk 4:19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood,…

I looked, but there was no one to help;

No human ruler, army, or heavenly servant could accomplish the judgment and deliverance required. Israel’s sin and the oppression of the nations had reached a point where only the Lord could act.

Psa 22:11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near…
Psa 107:12-13 He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled…
Ezk 22:30 I searched for a man among them to repair the wall…

I was appalled that no one assisted.

The absence of anyone able or willing to uphold justice revealed the depth of human failure. God stood alone against evil, unmoved by the weakness or indifference of those who should have defended righteousness.

Isa 50:2 Why was no one there when I arrived? Why did no one answer…
Psa 69:20 Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair.…
Psa 142:4 Look to my right and see; no one attends to me.…

So My arm brought Me salvation,

By His own power, the Lord would defeat His enemies and rescue His people. The salvation promised here rests entirely on God’s strength and anticipates the Redeemer who accomplishes what no person can achieve.

Isa 59:16 He saw that there was no man; He was amazed.…
Psa 98:1 A Psalm. Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done wonders…
Isa 52:10 The LORD has bared His holy arm in the sight of all the nations…

and My own wrath upheld Me.

His wrath is His holy response to sin, violence, and rebellion. It sustains His judgment against evil and clears the way for the deliverance of those who belong to Him.

Deu 32:41-43 When I sharpen My flashing sword, and My hand grasps it…
Nam 1:2-3 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging…
Psa 78:49 He unleashed His fury against them, wrath, indignation…

I trampled the nations in My anger;

The Lord is portrayed as the divine warrior who defeats the peoples gathered in rebellion against Him. The winepress imagery presents judgment as decisive and total, with the enemies of God crushed underfoot. Israel’s history had already shown God judging nations through war and invasion, but the scene reaches beyond any single campaign to His final reckoning of all opposition.

Hab 3:12 You marched across the earth with fury…
Mic 4:13 Rise and thresh, O Daughter of Zion, for I will give you…
Rev 19:15 And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword…

in My wrath I made them drunk

God’s judgment leaves the nations disoriented, powerless, and unable to escape the consequences of their violence and rebellion. Their downfall is not accidental or merely political; it comes under the righteous rule of God, who holds kings and nations accountable.

Jer 51:7 Babylon was a gold cup in the hand of the LORD,…
Jer 25:15-16 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me:…
Isa 51:17 Awake, awake! Rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk…

and poured out their blood on the ground.”

The image concludes with the death of those who persist in opposition to God. Their blood-stained defeat matches the warrior’s garments described in the surrounding passage and underscores the severity of divine judgment. The same Lord who judges evil also provides redemption for His people.

Isa 34:6-7 The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood.…
Ezk 32:6-8 I will drench the land with the flow of your blood,…
Rev 14:20 And the winepress was trodden outside the city…

God’s Mercies Recalled

I will make known the LORD’s loving devotion and His praiseworthy acts,

Isaiah declares his intention to recount the LORD’s covenant faithfulness and mighty works. Israel’s history provided abundant evidence of God’s care, deliverance, provision, and patience toward His people.

Psa 89:1 A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the LORD…
Psa 105:1-2 Give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name;…
Psa 78:4 We will not hide them from their children…

because of all that the LORD has done for us—

The prophet speaks corporately, identifying himself with the nation and acknowledging God’s actions on Israel’s behalf. Their deliverance from Egypt, preservation in the wilderness, conquest of the land, and repeated rescues from enemies all testified to the LORD’s faithfulness.

Psa 126:3 The LORD has done great things for us; we are filled…
Psa 40:5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have done,…
Psa 66:5 Come and see the works of God; how awesome are His deeds…

the many good things for the house of Israel

The house of Israel includes the descendants of Jacob, the people chosen by God and established in the land promised to Abraham. Their national blessings, protection, priesthood, kingdom, and covenant relationship came from God’s gracious purpose rather than their own merit.

Jer 32:42 For this is what the LORD says: Just as I have brought…
Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel…
1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…

according to His great compassion and loving devotion.

God’s dealings with Israel arose from His mercy and steadfast covenant love. Though the nation often rebelled, He remained faithful to His promises and provided a continuing hope of redemption ultimately fulfilled in Christ.

Lam 3:22-23 Because of the loving devotion of the LORD…
Psa 145:8-9 The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger…
Neh 9:31 But in Your great compassion, You did not put an end…

For He said,

God recounts His own purpose in choosing Israel and entering into covenant with them. His words reveal His faithful commitment to the nation despite its long history of weakness and rebellion.

Deu 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.…
Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
1Sa 12:22 Indeed, for the sake of His great name…

“They are surely My people,

Israel belonged to Him by covenant, set apart from the nations to bear His name and live under His rule. Their identity rested on God’s choice and promises, not on their own merit.

Lev 26:12 I will walk among you and be your God,…
Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…
Ezk 36:28 Then you will live in the land that I gave your forefathers;…

sons who will not be disloyal.”

God regarded Israel as His children and expected covenant faithfulness from them. Yet their later idolatry, unbelief, and disobedience exposed the depth of their unfaithfulness and brought divine discipline.

Hos 1:10 Yet the number of the Israelites will be like the sand…
Psa 78:37 Their hearts were disloyal to Him, and…
Zep 3:13 The remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or speak lies,…

So He became their Savior.

Even so, God repeatedly delivered Israel from enemies, bondage, and distress. His saving work displayed His mercy and pointed forward to the complete salvation accomplished through Jesus Christ.

Exo 15:2 He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God,…
Isa 43:3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel,…
Isa 43:11 I, yes I, am the LORD, and there is no Savior but Me.

In all their distress, He too was afflicted,

God identified with Israel’s suffering during their bondage in Egypt and throughout their wilderness journey. Their affliction was not ignored or distant from Him; He acted because of His covenant love for them.

Exo 3:7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the affliction…
Jdg 10:16 So they put away the foreign gods from among them…
Psa 106:44-45 Nevertheless He heard their cry; He took note…

and the Angel of His Presence saved them.

The Angel of the LORD’s Presence accompanied Israel, guarding, leading, and delivering them. This was no ordinary angelic servant but the visible expression of God’s own presence among His people.

Exo 23:20-23 Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you…
Exo 14:19-20 And the angel of God withdrew and went behind them.…
Gen 48:16 the angel who has redeemed me from all harm—…

In His love and compassion He redeemed them;

Israel’s rescue from Egypt came from God’s mercy, not from Israel’s strength or merit. He redeemed them from slavery and made them His covenant people.

Psa 103:4 who redeems your life from the Pit and crowns you…
Neh 9:17 They refused to listen and failed to remember…
Exo 6:6 Therefore tell the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD…

He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

Like a father carrying a child, God sustained Israel through the wilderness, provided for their needs, and preserved them despite their repeated rebellion.

Exo 19:4 You have seen for yourselves what I did to Egypt,…
Deu 1:31 and in the wilderness, where the LORD your God carried you…
Deu 32:11-12 As an eagle stirs up its nest and hovers over its young,…

But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit.

Israel repeatedly resisted the Lord’s commands and rejected His guidance, especially during the wilderness years. Their sin was not merely against a law but against the God who had redeemed, led, and sustained them. His Spirit was present among them, directing and empowering the leaders He appointed. Their rebellion brought grief because they had violated the covenant relationship established by God’s mercy.

Psa 78:40 How often they disobeyed Him in the wilderness…
Act 7:51 You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears!…
Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,…

So He turned and became their enemy,

Israel’s persistent disobedience brought the covenant judgments God had warned of. The One who had fought for them against Egypt and the nations of Canaan opposed them in discipline. Their defeats, oppression, and eventual exile were not signs that God had failed, but that He acted justly against a people who continually abandoned Him.

Lam 2:5 The Lord is like an enemy; He has swallowed up Israel.…
Lam 2:4 He has bent His bow like an enemy; His right hand…
Lev 26:17 Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee…

and He Himself fought against them.

The Lord allowed Israel’s enemies to prevail and withdrew the protection they had presumed upon. He opposed them to expose their sin and bring them to repentance. His judgment was severe, yet it preserved the truth that God is holy and that His covenant people could not continue in rebellion without consequence.

Jer 21:5 And I Myself will fight against you with a mighty arm…
Zec 14:3 Then the LORD will go out to fight against those…
Rev 2:16 Therefore repent! Otherwise I will come to you shortly…

Then His people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses.

In their affliction, Israel recalled the Exodus, when God rescued them from Egyptian bondage and led them under Moses. That history exposed the contrast between God’s former faithfulness and the nation’s present rebellion.

Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years long past…
Psa 77:11-12 I will remember the works of the LORD;…
Psa 105:26-27 He sent Moses His servant, and Aaron, whom He had chosen.…

Where is He who brought them through the sea with the shepherds of His flock?

They remembered God’s power at the Red Sea and the leadership of Moses and Aaron, who guided Israel as shepherds under God’s authority. The deliverance from Egypt marked Israel’s passage from slavery into a people set apart for the Lord.

Psa 77:20 You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses…
Exo 14:21-22 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,…
Neh 9:11 You divided the sea before them, and they crossed through it…

Where is the One who set His Holy Spirit among them,

God had been present with His people in the wilderness, directing and strengthening them through His appointed leaders. Their remembrance of the Spirit’s presence emphasized the loss they felt after grieving Him through disobedience.

Hag 2:5 This is the promise I made to you when you came out…
Neh 9:20 You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them.…
Num 11:17 And I will come down and speak with you there,…

who sent His glorious arm

God displayed His power openly in delivering Israel from Egypt and preserving them in the wilderness. His intervention revealed His strength before Israel and the surrounding nations.

Psa 77:15 With power You redeemed Your people, the sons of Jacob…
Exo 6:6 Therefore tell the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD…
Deu 4:34 Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation……

to lead them by the right hand of Moses,

Moses served as the appointed leader, but God Himself directed and empowered him. Through Moses, the Lord led His people according to His covenant purpose.

Psa 77:20 You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses…
Exo 13:21 And the LORD went before them in a pillar of cloud…
Neh 9:12 You led them with a pillar of cloud by day……

who divided the waters before them

At the Red Sea, God made a path through the waters for Israel to escape Pharaoh’s army. Their passage marked the end of Egyptian bondage and the beginning of their journey as a redeemed nation.

Exo 14:21-22 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,…
Psa 78:13 He split the sea and brought them through;…
Psa 136:13 He divided the Red Sea in two His loving devotion…

to gain for Himself everlasting renown,

The Exodus established God’s name as the faithful and powerful Redeemer of His people, revealing His glory and establishing His reputation among the nations. His mighty acts were to be remembered by Israel through every generation.

Psa 135:13 Your name, O LORD, endures forever, Your renown, O LORD…
Neh 9:10 You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh…
Exo 9:16 But I have raised you up for this very purpose…

who led them through the depths

The Lord brought Israel through the divided waters of the Red Sea, delivering them from Pharaoh’s army and ending their bondage in Egypt. The waters that threatened destruction became the path of salvation for God’s people.

Exo 14:21-22 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,…
Psa 77:19 Your path led through the sea, Your way…
Neh 9:11 You divided the sea before them, and they crossed through it…

like a horse in the wilderness,

Israel moved forward with the security and strength of a horse running across open ground. Though the wilderness was harsh and unfamiliar, the Lord guided them by His presence and supplied their needs.

Psa 68:4 Sing to God! Sing praises to His name. Exalt Him…
Job 39:19-25 Do you give strength to the horse or adorn his neck…
Hab 3:15 You trampled the sea with Your horses, churning the great…

so that they did not stumble?

God preserved the nation during its passage through the sea and its journey beyond it. Their deliverance rested on His power and covenant faithfulness, not on their own strength.

Psa 105:37 He brought Israel out with silver and gold,…
Pro 3:23 Then you will go on your way in safety,…
Psa 17:5 My steps have held to Your paths; my feet have not slipped.

Like cattle going down to the valley,

Israel was brought from the hardships of the wilderness into a place of safety, provision, and settled rest under God’s care.

Psa 77:20 You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses…
Psa 78:52 He led out His people like sheep and guided them…

the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest.

God Himself guided and sustained His people, granting relief from their enemies and from the burdens of their journey.

Neh 9:20 You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them.…
Exo 33:14 And the LORD answered, “My Presence will go with you…”…
Jos 21:44 And the LORD gave them rest on every side,…

You led Your people this way

Isaiah recalls the LORD’s faithful leadership of Israel from Egypt through the wilderness and into the land He promised them.

Exo 15:13 With loving devotion You will lead the people…
Neh 9:12 You led them with a pillar of cloud by day……
Deu 1:33 who went before you on the journey, in the fire by night…

to make for Yourself a glorious name.

God’s deliverance displayed His power, faithfulness, and holiness before Israel and the surrounding nations.

2Sa 7:23 And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation…
Neh 9:10 You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh…
Exo 9:16 But I have raised you up for this very purpose…

A Prayer for Mercy

Look down from heaven and see,

Isaiah appeals to God to behold the suffering and spiritual condition of His covenant people. Though God reigns from heaven in perfect holiness and power, Israel’s distress appears to continue without the deliverance they remember from earlier generations.

Psa 80:14 Return, O God of Hosts, we pray! Look down from heaven…
Psa 102:19-20 For He looked down from the heights of His sanctuary;…
Psa 33:13-14 The LORD looks down from heaven; He sees all the sons…

from Your holy and glorious habitation.

God’s dwelling is untouched by the corruption and disorder of earth. His glory had once been visibly associated with the temple in Jerusalem, yet His true throne is in heaven, from which He judges and rules all nations.

Deu 26:15 Look down from Your holy habitation, from heaven…
Psa 26:8 O LORD, I love the house where You dwell…
Psa 11:4 The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD is on His throne…

Where are Your zeal and might?

Israel recalls the Lord’s past acts of power, including His deliverance from Egypt and His protection in the wilderness. The question arises from the contrast between those historic mercies and the nation’s present humiliation under judgment.

Isa 42:13 The LORD goes forth like a mighty one; He stirs up His zeal…
2Ki 19:31 For a remnant will go forth from Jerusalem,…
Psa 80:2 before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh.…

Your yearning and compassion for me are restrained.

The people feel abandoned, yet they still address God as the One whose love and mercy belong to them. Their suffering was connected to their rebellion, but the appeal rests on God’s fatherly compassion and His faithfulness to restore those who turn to Him.

Psa 77:9 Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has His anger…
Isa 64:12 After all this, O LORD, will You restrain Yourself?…
Psa 13:1-2 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD?…

Yet You are our Father,

Israel appeals to God as the Father who formed, governed, and preserved the nation in covenant love.

Deu 32:6 Is this how you repay the LORD, O foolish and senseless…
Mal 2:10 Do we not all have one Father? Did not one God create us?…
Jer 3:19 Then I said, ‘How I long to make you My sons…

though Abraham does not know us

Abraham could not see or intervene in the suffering of his descendants.

Mat 3:9 And do not presume to say to yourselves,…
Jhn 8:39 “Abraham is our father,” they replied.…
Rom 9:7-8 Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants…

and Israel does not acknowledge us.

Jacob, the father of the tribes, likewise could not help them. Their hope rested not in ancestral privilege but in the living God.

Deu 32:18 You ignored the Rock who brought you forth;…
Jer 2:32 Does a maiden forget her jewelry or a bride her wedding sash…
Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…

You, O LORD, are our Father;

The repetition expresses confidence that the Lord had not abandoned His people, even in their sin and judgment.

1Ch 29:10 Then David blessed the LORD in the sight of all…
Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay,…
Jer 31:9 They will come with weeping, and by their supplication…

our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.

God had delivered Israel throughout its history and remained the eternal Savior of His people.

Isa 41:14 Do not fear, O Jacob, you worm, O few men of Israel…
Psa 90:2 Before the mountains were born or You brought forth…
Exo 3:15 God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites,…

Why, O LORD, do You make us stray from Your ways

Isaiah laments Israel’s persistent rebellion and recognizes that God had allowed the nation to experience the consequences of its sin. After generations of idolatry, injustice, and rejection of God’s commands, the people had become spiritually wayward.

2Th 2:11 For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion…
Psa 81:12 So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts…
Rom 1:24 Therefore God gave them over to impurity…

and harden our hearts from fearing You?

Their hardness was both the result of continued disobedience and God’s judgment upon it. Like Pharaoh, Israel had resisted God so long that reverence and obedience gave way to stubbornness and spiritual blindness.

Exo 9:12 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not…
Rom 9:18 Therefore God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy,…
Jer 32:40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them…

Return, for the sake of Your servants,

The prayer appeals for God’s merciful presence to be restored among His people. Isaiah pleads on behalf of the faithful within Israel and asks God to act according to His covenant promises.

Psa 90:13 Return, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion…
Psa 80:14 Return, O God of Hosts, we pray! Look down from heaven…
Lam 5:21 Restore us to Yourself, O LORD, so we may return;…

the tribes of Your heritage.

Israel belonged to the LORD as His chosen possession, formed from the twelve tribes descended from Jacob. Though the nation had sinned, God’s covenant with the patriarchs remained the basis for hope, restoration, and future blessing.

Psa 74:2 Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago…
Deu 32:9 But the LORD’s portion is His people, Jacob…
1Ki 8:51 For they are Your people and Your inheritance;…

For a short while Your people possessed Your holy place,

Israel occupied the Promised Land and worshiped at the temple in Jerusalem, where God had placed His name. Yet their possession was repeatedly endangered by covenant unfaithfulness, culminating in judgment through exile.

Exo 15:17 You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain…
Psa 78:54-55 He brought them to His holy land, to the mountain…
Psa 105:44-45 He gave them the lands of the nations…

but our enemies have trampled Your sanctuary.

Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and Solomon’s temple in 586 BC, leaving the sanctuary ruined and the people carried away. The devastation revealed the seriousness of Israel’s rebellion while preserving the hope that God would restore His people and His worship.

Dan 8:13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one…
Psa 74:7-8 They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground;…
Psa 79:1 A Psalm of Asaph. The nations, O God, have invaded…

We have become like those You never ruled,

Israel mourns as though God had withdrawn the covenant privileges that set them apart from the surrounding nations. Their rebellion had brought judgment, exile, and the loss of the land and temple that visibly marked them as His people. Though the Lord had not abandoned His covenant promises, their condition resembled that of nations outside His rule and blessing.

1Sa 8:7 And the LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice…
Hos 8:4 They set up kings, but not by Me. They make princes…
Psa 44:9 But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth…

like those not called by Your name.

God had placed His name upon Israel, identifying them as His own possession among the nations. In exile, stripped of their kingdom, worship center, and security, they felt deprived of that identity. The lament appeals to God to act for the honor of His name and to restore the people He had chosen.

Jer 14:9 Why are You like a man taken by surprise, …
Dan 9:19 O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act!…
2Ch 7:14 if My people who are called by My name humble themselves…
