The Ministry of the Twelve

(Matthew 10:5-15; Mark 6:7-13)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases,1And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,1And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases.1Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.1Summoning the Twelve, He gave them power and authority over all the demons, and power to heal diseases.
and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.2and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.2And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing.2And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.2Then He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
He told them: "Take nothing for the journey--no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.3And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.3And He said to them, "Take nothing for your journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two tunics apiece.3And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.3"Take nothing for the road," He told them, "no walking stick, no traveling bag, no bread, no money; and don't take an extra shirt.
Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.4And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.4"Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that city.4And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.4Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.

If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."5And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”5"And as for those who do not receive you, as you go out from that city, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."5And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.5If they do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them."
So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.6And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.6Departing, they began going throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.6And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.6So they went out and traveled from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.

Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead,7Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead,7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;7Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was going on. He was perplexed, because some said that John had been raised from the dead,
others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.8by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen.8and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen again.8And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.8some that Elijah had appeared, and others that one of the ancient prophets had risen."
But Herod said, "I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?" And he tried to see him.9Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.9Herod said, "I myself had John beheaded; but who is this man about whom I hear such things?" And he kept trying to see Him.9And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.9I beheaded John," Herod said, "but who is this I hear such things about?" And he wanted to see Him.

When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,10On their return the apostles told him all that they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida.10When the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done. Taking them with Him, He withdrew by Himself to a city called Bethsaida.10And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.10When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus all that they had done. He took them along and withdrew privately to a town called Bethsaida.
but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.11When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing.11But the crowds were aware of this and followed Him; and welcoming them, He began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing.11And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.11When the crowds found out, they followed Him. He welcomed them, spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and cured those who needed healing.
Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here."12Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.”12Now the day was ending, and the twelve came and said to Him, "Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get something to eat; for here we are in a desolate place."12And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.12Late in the day, the Twelve approached and said to Him, "Send the crowd away, so they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find food and lodging, because we are in a deserted place here."
He replied, "You give them something to eat." They answered, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish--unless we go and buy food for all this crowd."13But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.”13But He said to them, "You give them something to eat!" And they said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people."13But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.13"You give them something to eat," He told them." We have no more than five loaves and two fish," they said, "unless we go and buy food for all these people."

(About five thousand men were there.) But he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each."14For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”14(For there were about five thousand men.) And He said to His disciples, "Have them sit down to eat in groups of about fifty each."14For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.14(For about 5,000 men were there.) Then He told His disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about 50 each."
The disciples did so, and everyone sat down.15And they did so, and had them all sit down.15They did so, and had them all sit down.15And they did so, and made them all sit down.15They did so, and had them all sit down.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people.16And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.16Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the people.16Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.16Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them. He kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.17And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.17And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full.17And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.17Everyone ate and was filled. Then they picked up 12 baskets of leftover pieces.

Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"18Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”18And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, "Who do the people say that I am?"18And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?18While He was praying in private and His disciples were with Him, He asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life."19And they answered, “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.”19They answered and said, "John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again."19They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.19They answered, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back."
"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "God's Messiah."20Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”20And He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered and said, "The Christ of God."20He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.20"But you," He asked them, "who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "God's Messiah!"

Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.21And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one,21But He warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone,21And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;21But He strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one,
And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."22saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”22saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day."22Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.22saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day."

Then he said to them all: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.23And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.23And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.23Then He said to them all, "If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.24For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.24"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will save it.
What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?25For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?25"For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?25What is a man benefited if he gains the whole world, yet loses or forfeits himself?
Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.26For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.26"For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.26For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and that of the Father and the holy angels.
"Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."27But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”27"But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God."27But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.27I tell you the truth: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God."

The Transfiguration

About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.28Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray.28Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.28And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.28About eight days after these words, He took along Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray.
As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.29And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white.29And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.29And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.29As He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became dazzling white.
Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus.30And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah,30And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah,30And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:30Suddenly, two men were talking with Him--Moses and Elijah.
They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.31who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.31who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.31Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.31They appeared in glory and were speaking of His death, which He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.

Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.32Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.32Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him.32But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.32Peter and those with him were in a deep sleep, and when they became fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who were standing with Him.
As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." (He did not know what he was saying.)33And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said.33And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah "-- not realizing what he was saying.33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.33As the two men were departing from Him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it's good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"--not knowing what he said.
While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.34As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.34While he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.34While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.34While he was saying this, a cloud appeared and overshadowed them. They became afraid as they entered the cloud.
A voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him."35And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!”35Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!"35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.35Then a voice came from the cloud, saying: This is My Son, the Chosen One; listen to Him!
When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.36And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.36And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.36And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.36After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was found. They kept silent, and in those days told no one what they had seen.

The Greatest in the Kingdom

An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.46An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest.46An argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest.46Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.46Then an argument started among them about who would be the greatest of them.
Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him.47But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side47But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side,47And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,47But Jesus, knowing the thoughts of their hearts, took a little child and had him stand next to Him.
Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest."48and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”48and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great."48And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.48He told them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me welcomes Him who sent Me. For whoever is least among you--this one is great."
"Master," said John, "we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us."49John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.”49John answered and said, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us."49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.49John responded, "Master, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him because he does not follow us."
"Do not stop him," Jesus said, "for whoever is not against you is for you."50But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”50But Jesus said to him, "Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you."50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.50"Don't stop him," Jesus told him, "because whoever is not against you is for you."

As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.51When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.51When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem;51And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,51When the days were coming to a close for Him to be taken up, He determined to journey to Jerusalem.
And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him;52And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him.52and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him.52And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.52He sent messengers ahead of Him, and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for Him.
but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.53But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.53But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.53And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.53But they did not welcome Him, because He determined to journey to Jerusalem.
When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"54And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”54When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"54And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?54When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?"

But Jesus turned and rebuked them.55But he turned and rebuked them.55But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of;55But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.55But He turned and rebuked them,
Then he and his disciples went to another village.56And they went on to another village.56for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them." And they went on to another village.56For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.56and they went to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus

(Matthew 8:18-22; Luke 14:25-33; John 6:60-65)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."57As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”57As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, "I will follow You wherever You go."57And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.57As they were traveling on the road someone said to Him, "I will follow You wherever You go!"
Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."58And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”58And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."58And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.58Jesus told him, "Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head."
He said to another man, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."59To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”59And He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father."59And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.59Then He said to another, "Follow Me."" Lord," he said, "first let me go bury my father."
Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."60And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”60But He said to him, "Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God."60Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.60But He told him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God."

Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family."61Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.”61Another also said, "I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home."61And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.61Another also said, "I will follow You, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house."
Jesus replied, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."62Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”62But Jesus said to him, "No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."62And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.62But Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
