1 In the meantime, a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling one another. Jesus began to speak first to His disciples: “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Under these circumstances, after so many thousands of people had gathered together that they were stepping on one another, He began saying to His disciples first <i>of all,</i> “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. 3 What you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the housetops. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
4 I tell you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear the One who, after you have been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him! But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed <i>someone,</i> has <i>the</i> power to throw <i>that person</i> into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him! But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? Are five sparrows not sold for two assaria? And <i>yet</i> not one of them has gone unnoticed in the sight of God. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
7 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. 8 I tell you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will also confess him before the angels of God. “And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: “Now I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before people, the Son of Man will also confess him before the angels of God; “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.
9 But whoever denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God. but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. but the one who denies Me before people will be denied before the angels of God. But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God.
10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
11 When you are brought before synagogues, rulers, and authorities, do not worry about how to defend yourselves or what to say. And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and <i>unto</i> magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: Now when they bring you before the synagogues and the officials and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,
12 For at that time the Holy Spirit will teach you what you should say. for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”
13 Someone in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me. 14 But Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed Me judge or executor between you? But He said to him, “You there—who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over <i>the two of</i> you?” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”
15 And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. But He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not <i>even</i> when one is affluent does his life consist of his possessions.” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
16 Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced an abundance. And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.
17 So he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, since I have nowhere to store my crops? and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he began thinking to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and will build bigger ones, and there I will store up all my grain and my goods. And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And he said, ‘This <i>is what</i> I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and I will store all my grain and my goods there. “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain.
19 Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry! And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, <i>and</i> be merry. And I will say to myself, “You have many goods stored up for many years <i>to come;</i> relax, eat, drink, <i>and</i> enjoy yourself!”’ And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.|’
20 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be required of you. Then who will own what you have accumulated? But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ But God said unto him, <i>Thou</i> fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? But God said to him, ‘You fool! This <i>very</i> night your soul is demanded of you; and <i>as for all</i> that you have prepared, who will own <i>it now?</i>’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 This is how it will be for anyone who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich toward God. So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” So <i>is</i> he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Such is the one who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich in relation to God.” “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
22 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. And He said to His disciples, “For this reason I tell you, do not worry about <i>your</i> life, <i>as to</i> what you are to eat; nor for your body, <i>as to</i> what you are to wear. Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.
23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. The life is more than meat, and the body <i>is more</i> than raiment. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storehouse or barn; yet God feeds them. How much more valuable you are than the birds! Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? Consider the ravens, that they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and <i>yet</i> God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds! Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!
25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? And which of you by worrying can add a day to his life’s span? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?
26 So if you cannot do such a small thing, why do you worry about the rest? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? Therefore if you cannot do even a very little thing, why do you worry about the other things? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27 Consider how the lilies grow: They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these. Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither labor nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. “Consider how the wild flowers grow. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith! But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more <i>will he clothe</i> you, O ye of little faith? Now if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is <i>alive</i> today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more <i>will He clothe</i> you? You of little faith! If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!
29 And do not be concerned about what you will eat or drink. Do not worry about it. And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
30 For the Gentiles of the world strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. For all these things <i>are what</i> the nations of the world eagerly seek; and your Father knows that you need these things. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.
31 But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added unto you. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be provided to you. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
32 Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.

35 Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning. “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, Let your loins be girded about, and <i>your</i> lights burning; “Be prepared, and <i>keep</i> your lamps lit. “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,
36 Then you will be like servants waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once. and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds on watch when he returns. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve and will have them recline at the table, and he himself will come and wait on them. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. 38 Even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night and finds them alert, those servants will be blessed. If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find <i>them</i> so, blessed are those servants. Whether he comes in the second watch, or even in the third, and finds <i>them</i> so, blessed are those <i>slaves.</i> It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak.
39 But understand this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. “But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be broken into. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. You too, be ready; because the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not think <i>He will.</i>” You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
41 “Lord, said Peter, “are You addressing this parable to us, or to everyone else as well? Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all? Peter said, “Lord, are You telling this parable to us, or to everyone <i>else</i> as well?” Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”
42 And the Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their portion at the proper time? And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom <i>his</i> lord shall make ruler over his household, to give <i>them their</i> portion of meat in due season? And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and sensible steward, whom his master will put in charge of his servants, to give them their rations at the proper time? The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?
43 Blessed is that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Blessed <i>is</i> that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes. It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.
44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
45 But suppose that servant says in his heart, ‘My master will be a long time in coming, and he begins to beat the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk. But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; But if that slave says in his heart, ‘My master will take a long time to come,’ and he begins to beat the <i>other</i> slaves, <i>both</i> men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk; But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk.
46 The master of that servant will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not anticipate. Then he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for <i>him</i>, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. <i>then</i> the master of that slave will come on a day that he does not expect, and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in two, and assign him a place with the unbelievers. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
47 That servant who knows his master’s will but does not get ready or follow his instructions will be beaten with many blows. And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not <i>himself</i>, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many <i>stripes</i>. And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act in accordance with his will, will receive many blows, “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.
48 But the one who unknowingly does things worthy of punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded. But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few <i>stripes</i>. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. but the one who did not know <i>it,</i> and committed acts deserving of a beating, will receive <i>only</i> a few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
49 I have come to ignite a fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! “I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? “I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled! “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!
51 Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but division. Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: Do you think that I came to provide peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.
52 From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. for from now on five <i>members</i> in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.
53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. And He was also saying to the crowds, “Whenever you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it turns out. He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.
55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It will be hot, and it is. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. And when <i>ye see</i> the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. And whenever <i>you feel</i> a south wind blowing, you say, ‘It will be a hot <i>day,</i>’ and it turns out <i>that way.</i> And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is.
56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and sky. Why don’t you know how to interpret the present time? You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? <i>Ye</i> hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? You hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how <i>is it that</i> you do not know how to analyze this <i>present</i> time? Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?
57 And why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? “And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? “And why do you not even judge by yourselves what is right? “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?
58 Make every effort to reconcile with your adversary while you are on your way to the magistrate. Otherwise, he may drag you off to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and the officer may throw you into prison. As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, <i>as thou art</i> in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. For when you are going with your accuser <i>to appear</i> before the magistrate, on the way, make an effort to settle with him, so that he does not drag you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the very last penny. I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.” I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite. I tell you, you will not get out of there until you have paid up the very last lepton.” I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”
