John 3

Jesus and Nicodemus
(Genesis 22:1–10; Romans 5:6–11)

1 Ἦν (There was) δὲ (now) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), Νικόδημος (Nicodemus) ὄνομα (the name) αὐτῷ (to him), ἄρχων (a ruler) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)· 2 οὗτος (This one) ἦλθεν (came) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) νυκτὸς (by night) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Ῥαββί (Rabbi), οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἐλήλυθας (You have come) διδάσκαλος (a teacher)· οὐδεὶς (no one) γὰρ (for) δύναται (is able) ταῦτα (these) τὰ (-) σημεῖα (signs) ποιεῖν (to do) (that) σὺ (You) ποιεῖς (do), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) (would be) (-) Θεὸς (God) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him).

3 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἀμὴν (Truly) ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἐὰν (if) μή (not) τις (one) γεννηθῇ (would be born) ἄνωθεν (from above), οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) ἰδεῖν (to see) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

4 Λέγει (Says) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) (-) Νικόδημος (Nicodemus)· Πῶς (How) δύναται (is able) ἄνθρωπος (a man) γεννηθῆναι (to be born) γέρων (old) ὤν (being)? μὴ (Not) δύναται (is he able) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κοιλίαν (womb) τῆς (of the) μητρὸς (mother) αὐτοῦ (of him) δεύτερον (a second time) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) καὶ (and) γεννηθῆναι (to be born)?

5 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Ἀμὴν (Truly) ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἐὰν (if) μή (not) τις (one) γεννηθῇ (would be born) ἐξ (of) ὕδατος (water) καὶ (and) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit), οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). 6 τὸ (That) γεγεννημένον (having been born) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) σαρκὸς (flesh) σάρξ (flesh) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) τὸ (that) γεγεννημένον (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) πνεῦμά (spirit) ἐστιν (is). 7 μὴ (Not) θαυμάσῃς (marvel) ὅτι (that) εἶπόν (I said) σοι (to you)· Δεῖ (It is necessary for) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) γεννηθῆναι (to be born) ἄνωθεν (from above). 8 τὸ (The) πνεῦμα (wind) ὅπου (where) θέλει (it wills) πνεῖ (blows), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (sound) αὐτοῦ (of it) ἀκούεις (You hear), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) οἶδας (you know) πόθεν (from where) ἔρχεται (it comes) καὶ (and) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (it goes)· οὕτως (thus) ἐστὶν (is) πᾶς (everyone) (-) γεγεννημένος (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit).

9 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Νικόδημος (Nicodemus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Πῶς (How) δύναται (are able) ταῦτα (these things) γενέσθαι (to be)?

10 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) (the) διδάσκαλος (teacher) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel) καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these things) οὐ (not) γινώσκεις (know)? 11 ἀμὴν (Truly) ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you) ὅτι (that) (what) οἴδαμεν (we know) λαλοῦμεν (we speak) καὶ (and) (what) ἑωράκαμεν (we have seen) μαρτυροῦμεν (we testify to), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἡμῶν (of us) οὐ (not) λαμβάνετε (you⁺ do not receive).

12 Εἰ (If) τὰ (the things) ἐπίγεια (earthly) εἶπον (I spoke) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) πιστεύετε (you⁺ believe), πῶς (how) ἐὰν (if) εἴπω (I should speak) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) τὰ (the things) ἐπουράνια (heavenly) πιστεύσετε (will you⁺ believe)? 13 καὶ (And) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἀναβέβηκεν (has gone up) εἰς (into) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) (the One) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καταβάς (having come down), (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man). 14 καὶ (And) καθὼς (just as) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) ὕψωσεν (lifted up) τὸν (the) ὄφιν (serpent) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness), οὕτως (thus) ὑψωθῆναι (to be lifted up) δεῖ (it is necessary for) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), 15 ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) (-) πιστεύων (believing) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) ἔχῃ (may have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal). 16 Οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἠγάπησεν (loved) (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὥστε (that) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τὸν (the) μονογενῆ (only begotten) ἔδωκεν (He gave), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) μὴ (not) ἀπόληται (shall perish) ἀλλ’ (but) ἔχῃ (shall have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal). 17 οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἵνα (that) κρίνῃ (He might judge) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) σωθῇ (might be saved) (the) κόσμος (world) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him). 18  (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) οὐ (not) κρίνεται (is judged)· (the one) δὲ (but) μὴ (not) πιστεύων (believing) ἤδη (already) κέκριται (has been judged), ὅτι (because) μὴ (not) πεπίστευκεν (he has believed) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) μονογενοῦς (only begotten) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

19 Αὕτη (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) (the) κρίσις (judgment), ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐλήλυθεν (has come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) καὶ (and) ἠγάπησαν (loved) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men) μᾶλλον (rather) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) (than) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light)· ἦν (were) γὰρ (for) αὐτῶν (of them) πονηρὰ (evil) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works). 20 πᾶς (Everyone) γὰρ (for) (-) φαῦλα (evil) πράσσων (practicing) μισεῖ (hates) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἐλεγχθῇ (may be exposed) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him)· 21  (the one) δὲ (however) ποιῶν (doing) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἵνα (so that) φανερωθῇ (may be manifest) αὐτοῦ (his) τὰ (-) ἔργα (works) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) Θεῷ (God) ἐστιν (they are) εἰργασμένα (having been worked).

John’s Testimony about Jesus

22 Μετὰ (After) ταῦτα (these things) ἦλθεν (went) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) Ἰουδαίαν (Judea) γῆν (land), καὶ (and) ἐκεῖ (there) διέτριβεν (He was staying) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them) καὶ (and) ἐβάπτιζεν (was baptizing).

23 Ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) (-) Ἰωάννης (John) βαπτίζων (baptizing) ἐν (in) Αἰνὼν (Aenon) ἐγγὺς (near) τοῦ (-) Σαλείμ (Salim), ὅτι (because) ὕδατα (the waters) πολλὰ (many) ἦν (were) ἐκεῖ (there), καὶ (and) παρεγίνοντο (they were coming) καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίζοντο (were being baptized)· 24 οὔπω (Not yet) γὰρ (for) ἦν (was) βεβλημένος (thrown) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) φυλακὴν (prison) (-) Ἰωάννης (John).

25 Ἐγένετο (Arose) οὖν (then) ζήτησις (a debate) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) Ἰωάννου (of John) μετὰ (with) Ἰουδαίου (a Jew) περὶ (about) καθαρισμοῦ (purification). 26 καὶ (And) ἦλθον (they came) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ῥαββί (Rabbi), ὃς (the One who) ἦν (was) μετὰ (with) σοῦ (you) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), (to whom) σὺ (you) μεμαρτύρηκας (have testified), ἴδε (behold) οὗτος (this One) βαπτίζει (is baptizing) καὶ (and) πάντες (all) ἔρχονται (are coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him).

27 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰωάννης (John) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said)· Οὐ (Not) δύναται (is able) ἄνθρωπος (a man) λαμβάνειν (to receive) οὐδὲ (not) ἓν (one thing) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) (it shall be) δεδομένον (given) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven). 28 αὐτοὶ (Yourselves) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) μοι (to me) μαρτυρεῖτε (testify) ὅτι (that) εἶπον (I said) ὅτι (-)· Οὐκ (Not) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I) (the) Χριστός (Christ), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (-) Ἀπεσταλμένος (sent) εἰμὶ (I am) ἔμπροσθεν (before) ἐκείνου (Him). 29  (The one) ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) νύμφην (bride) νυμφίος (the bridegroom) ἐστίν (is)· (the) δὲ (now) φίλος (friend) τοῦ (of the) νυμφίου (bridegroom) (the one) ἑστηκὼς (standing) καὶ (and) ἀκούων (hearing) αὐτοῦ (him), χαρᾷ (with joy) χαίρει (rejoices) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice) τοῦ (of the) νυμφίου (bridegroom). αὕτη (This) οὖν (therefore) (the) χαρὰ (joy) (-) ἐμὴ (of mine) πεπλήρωται (is fulfilled). 30 ἐκεῖνον (For Him) δεῖ (it is necessary) αὐξάνειν (to increase), ἐμὲ (for me) δὲ (however) ἐλαττοῦσθαι (to decrease).

31  (The One) ἄνωθεν (from above) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐπάνω (above) πάντων (all) ἐστίν (is)· (The one) ὢν (being) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) ἐστιν (is) καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) λαλεῖ (speaks). (The One) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐπάνω (above) πάντων (all) ἐστίν (is)· 32  (What) ἑώρακεν (He has seen) καὶ (and) ἤκουσεν (heard), τοῦτο (this) μαρτυρεῖ (He testifies), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) αὐτοῦ (of Him) οὐδεὶς (no one) λαμβάνει (receives). 33  (The one) λαβὼν (having received) αὐτοῦ (His) τὴν (-) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἐσφράγισεν (has sealed) ὅτι (that) (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is). 34 ὃν (the One whom) γὰρ (for) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) (-) Θεὸς (God) τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) λαλεῖ (speaks)· οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (by) μέτρου (measure) δίδωσιν (He gives) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit).

35  (The) Πατὴρ (Father) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) τὸν (the) Υἱόν (Son), καὶ (and) πάντα (all things) δέδωκεν (has given) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) χειρὶ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him). 36  (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) ἔχει (has) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal)· (the one) δὲ (however) ἀπειθῶν (not obeying) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) οὐκ (not) ὄψεται (will see) ζωήν (life), ἀλλ’ (but) (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (remains) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (him).
