Amos 5
Berean Study Bible

A Lamentation against Israel

Hear this word,

Amos calls Israel to give solemn attention to the message of God. The words that follow are not merely a warning but a funeral song over a nation facing judgment.

Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,…
Jer 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob,…
Isa 1:10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom;…

O house of Israel,

Israel refers to the Northern Kingdom, whose capital was Samaria. Though descended from the covenant people, the nation had turned to idolatry, oppression, and corrupt worship.

Hos 5:1 Hear this, O priests! Take heed, O house of Israel!…
Ezk 3:4 Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now…
Ezk 37:11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones”…

this lamentation

Amos mourns in advance for Israel’s coming ruin. Their judgment is presented as certain because they refused to turn from their sin.

Ezk 32:16 This is the lament they will chant for her;…
Ezk 19:1 “As for you, take up a lament for the princes of Israel
Ezk 27:2 “Now you, son of man, take up a lament for Tyre.

I take up against you:

God’s case is directed against Israel itself. Having violated the covenant through injustice and unfaithfulness, the nation stands accountable before Him.

Mic 2:4 In that day they will take up a proverb against you…
Ezk 32:2 Son of man, take up a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt……
Ezk 28:12 “Son of man, take up a lament for the king of Tyre”…

“Fallen is Virgin Israel,

Israel’s collapse is portrayed as the fall of a young woman, once set apart by God but ruined through idolatry and covenant rebellion. Amos announces the coming destruction of the Northern Kingdom, fulfilled when Assyria conquered Samaria in 722 BC.

Isa 3:8 For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen…
Jer 18:13 Therefore this is what the LORD says: “Inquire…
Lam 1:15 The Lord has rejected all the mighty men in my midst;…

never to rise again.

The kingdom would not regain its former independence, strength, or royal line. Though individuals from Israel would remain and God would preserve a remnant, the Northern Kingdom would end as a nation.

Amo 8:14 Those who swear by the guilt of Samaria and say,…
Isa 26:14 The dead will not live; the departed spirits will not rise.…
Jer 51:64 Then you are to say, ‘In the same way Babylon will sink…

She lies abandoned on her land,

The land promised as a blessing under the covenant would become the scene of defeat, depopulation, and exile. Israel’s cities, fields, and capital would be left devastated by invasion.

Isa 1:7 Your land is desolate; your cities are burned with fire.…
Jer 4:7 A lion has gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer…
2Ch 36:21 So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days…

with no one to raise her up.”

No ally, army, or false god could prevent the judgment God had decreed. Israel’s condition exposed the failure of every refuge she had trusted apart from the Lord.

Isa 63:5 I looked, but there was no one to help;…
Isa 51:18 Among all the sons she bore, there is no one to guide her;…
Jer 30:17 But I will restore your health and heal your wounds,…

This is what the Lord GOD says:

God speaks with sovereign authority, announcing His judgment through Amos against Israel’s rebellion.

Ezk 2:4 They are obstinate and stubborn children.…
Ezk 3:11 Go to your people, the exiles; speak to them…
Ezk 5:5 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘This is Jerusalem…

“The city that marches out a thousand strong will have but a hundred left,

Israel’s towns would suffer devastating military losses. Forces that left confidently for battle would return reduced to a remnant.

Lev 26:8 Five of you will pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you……
Deu 32:30 How could one man pursue a thousand, or two…
Deu 28:62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky…

and the one that marches out a hundred strong will have but ten left

The repeated pattern stresses the certainty and scale of defeat. Israel’s strength, numbers, and defenses would not prevent God’s judgment.

Isa 6:13 And though a tenth remains in the land, it will be burned…
Isa 10:19 The remaining trees of its forests will be so few…
Isa 10:22 Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand of the sea,…

in the house of Israel.”

The warning concerns the northern kingdom, whose idolatry, injustice, and covenant unfaithfulness would lead to national collapse and exile.

Ezk 37:11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones”…
Ezk 36:22 Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is…
Ezk 36:32 It is not for your sake that I will act,…

A Call to Repentance

For this is what the LORD says to the house of Israel:

Yahweh speaks as Israel’s covenant God, addressing the northern kingdom amid its idolatry, corruption, and injustice. Though the nation had turned from Him, He still calls His people to return before judgment falls.

Jer 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob,…
Ezk 3:4 Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now…
Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,…

“Seek Me and live!

Israel’s hope was not in religious shrines, political strength, or prosperity, but in returning to the Lord with sincere obedience. To seek Him was to abandon rebellion and receive the life He alone gives, escaping the death and ruin brought by continued sin.

Deu 4:29 But if from there you will seek the LORD your God,…
Jer 29:13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me…
Psa 22:26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD…

Do not seek Bethel

Bethel, meaning “house of God,” once associated with Israel’s early worship, had become a major center of idolatry under Jeroboam I, who established a golden calf there. Its religious reputation could not conceal its rebellion against the Lord.

1Ki 12:28-30 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves…
2Ki 23:15-16 He even pulled down the altar at Bethel,…

or go to Gilgal;

Gilgal had been important in Israel’s entrance into Canaan, but it too became connected with corrupt worship. Pilgrimage to sacred sites could not restore a people who persisted in idolatry.

Hos 4:15 Though you prostitute yourself, O Israel,…
Hos 12:11 Is there iniquity in Gilead? They will surely come…

do not journey to Beersheba,

Beersheba was linked with the patriarchs and lay far to the south in Judah. Its historic associations did not make it a proper refuge for Israel’s false worship or empty ritual.

Amo 8:14 Those who swear by the guilt of Samaria and say,…
2Ki 23:8 Then Josiah brought all the priests from the cities of Judah…

for Gilgal will surely go into exile,

The inhabitants of Gilgal would share in the judgment coming upon the Northern Kingdom. Assyria’s conquest would remove Israel from the land because of its continued unfaithfulness.

Hos 9:15 All their evil appears at Gilgal, for there I hated them.…
2Ki 17:18-23 So the LORD was very angry with Israel…

and Bethel will come to nothing.

Bethel’s shrine, priests, and idols would prove powerless before God’s judgment. What claimed to be the house of God had become a center of rebellion and would lose all lasting significance.

Hos 10:15 Thus it will be done to you, O Bethel…
1Ki 13:2 And he cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD,…

Seek the LORD and live,

Israel was called to turn from idolatry, injustice, and covenant rebellion to faithful worship and obedience. Life depended on returning to the LORD before judgment came.

Deu 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…
Deu 4:29 But if from there you will seek the LORD your God,…
Isa 55:6 Seek the LORD while He may be found; call on Him…

or He will sweep like fire through the house of Joseph;

The house of Joseph refers to the Northern Kingdom, especially Ephraim and Manasseh. The fire portrays God’s consuming judgment, later fulfilled in the Assyrian destruction and exile of Israel.

Hos 8:14 Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces;…
Jer 11:16 The LORD once called you a flourishing olive tree…
Isa 10:17 And the Light of Israel will become a fire,…

it will devour everything,

Judgment would be complete, leaving no refuge for a nation that persisted in sin.

Jer 17:27 But if you do not listen to Me to keep the Sabbath day holy……
Isa 1:31 The strong man will become tinder and his work…
Jer 4:4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and remove the foreskins…

with no one at Bethel to extinguish it.

Bethel, a major center of calf worship established by Jeroboam, could not provide deliverance. Its false religion was powerless before the judgment of the true God.

1Ki 13:2-3 And he cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD,…
2Ki 23:15-16 He even pulled down the altar at Bethel,…
Hos 10:5-8 The people of Samaria will fear for the calf of Beth-aven.…

There are those who turn justice into wormwood

Israel’s courts and leaders had made justice bitter and destructive, especially for the poor and vulnerable. Rather than protecting those who suffered wrong, they used their power to favor the wealthy and oppress the needy. What God intended to preserve order and righteousness in the covenant community had become a source of pain and loss.

Amo 6:12 “Do horses gallop on the cliffs? Does one plow the sea?…
Jer 9:15 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,…
Lam 3:15 He has filled me with bitterness; He has intoxicated me…

and cast righteousness to the ground.

God’s standard of right conduct was treated with contempt and set aside. Righteousness was meant to govern both public life and personal dealings in Israel, but corruption had become common. Amos warns that such rejection of God’s order would bring judgment upon a nation that continued in worship while disregarding justice.

Dan 8:12 And in the rebellion, the host and the daily sacrifice…
Isa 59:14 So justice is turned away, and righteousness stands…
Ecc 3:16 Furthermore, I saw under the sun that in the place of judgment…

He who made the Pleiades and Orion,

Psa 147:4 He determines the number of the stars;…

who turns darkness into dawn and darkens day into night,

Psa 104:20 You bring darkness, and it becomes night…
Job 12:22 He reveals the deep things of darkness…

Exo 15:3 The LORD is a warrior, the LORD is His name.
Psa 83:18 May they know that You alone, whose name is the LORD,…

He flashes destruction on the strong,

God brings sudden judgment upon Israel’s powerful leaders, wealthy landowners, and military defenders who trusted in their influence while exploiting the poor and embracing idolatry. Their strength could not shield them from the consequences of rebellion against Him.

Psa 18:14 He shot His arrows and scattered the foes;…
Hab 3:11 Sun and moon stood still in their places…
Job 12:21 He pours out contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty.

so that fury comes upon the stronghold.

Even fortified cities and military centers would fall under God’s judgment. Israel’s defenses offered no protection when the nation refused His warnings. The later fall of Samaria to Assyria demonstrated that no human security can stand against the Lord’s righteous judgment.

Mic 5:11 I will remove the cities of your land…
Jer 48:18 Come down from your glory; sit on parched ground…
Isa 23:11 The LORD has stretched out His hand over the sea;…

There are those who hate the one who reproves in the gate

The city gate served as Israel’s public forum, where elders heard cases, rendered judgments, and addressed community affairs. Those who exposed injustice there confronted powerful people whose wealth and influence depended on corrupt courts and dishonest dealings. Amos condemned a nation in which correction was met with hostility rather than repentance.

Isa 29:21 those who indict a man with a word,…
Pro 9:8 Do not rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you;…
Pro 15:12 A mocker does not love to be reproved, nor will he consult…

and despise him who speaks with integrity.

Honest testimony and righteous judgment had become unwelcome in a society marked by oppression of the poor and perversion of justice. The rejection of truthful voices revealed Israel’s deeper rejection of God’s law, contributing to the judgment Amos announced.

1Ki 22:8 The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man……
Gal 4:16 Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?
Jhn 8:45-46 But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!…

Therefore, because you trample on the poor

Israel’s prosperous leaders and landowners oppressed the vulnerable, treating the needy as a source of gain rather than as fellow covenant members deserving protection and justice.

Pro 22:22-23 Do not rob a poor man because he is poor,…
Isa 3:14-15 The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders…
Mic 2:1-2 Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds…

and exact from him a tax of grain,

Heavy grain payments deprived poor families of a basic necessity while enriching those already in positions of power. Such practices exposed a society that had disregarded God’s commands concerning the poor.

1Sa 8:15-17 He will take a tenth of your grain and grape harvest…
Neh 5:10-11 I, as well as my brothers and my servants, have been lending…

you will never live in the stone houses you have built;

Their costly stone houses, a sign of wealth and permanence, represented wealth acquired through injustice. God declared that coming judgment would remove them from the security and comfort they had built for themselves.

Deu 28:30 You will be pledged in marriage to a woman.…
Zep 1:13 Their wealth will be plundered and their houses laid waste.…

you will never drink the wine from the lush vineyards you have planted.

The vineyards that displayed their prosperity would not provide lasting enjoyment. Although they had gathered wealth and planted for the future, their oppression of others would bring God’s judgment rather than blessing.

Deu 28:39-40 You will plant and cultivate vineyards,…
Mic 6:15 You will sow but not reap; you will press olives…
Hos 2:8-9 For she does not acknowledge that it was I who gave her…

For I know that your transgressions are many and your sins are numerous.

God had full knowledge of Israel’s persistent rebellion. Under Jeroboam II, the Northern Kingdom enjoyed outward prosperity, yet idolatry, greed, and disregard for God’s covenant had spread throughout the nation. Their wrongdoing was neither isolated nor hidden from the Lord.

Jer 30:15 Why do you cry out over your wound? Your pain has no cure!…
Isa 59:12 For our transgressions are multiplied before You,…
Lam 1:5 Her foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease.…

You oppress the righteous by taking bribes;

Those responsible for judgment used their authority for personal gain. Wealthy offenders could influence legal decisions, while upright people suffered for refusing to participate in corruption. Such conduct openly violated the justice God required in Israel.

Exo 23:8 Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see…
Deu 16:19 Do not deny justice or show partiality…
Mic 3:11 Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach…

you deprive the poor of justice in the gate.

The city gate was the public place where elders and judges heard legal cases and settled disputes. Instead of receiving protection, the poor were denied fair hearings because they lacked money and influence. Israel’s leaders had turned the place appointed for justice into a means of protecting the powerful at the expense of the vulnerable.

Isa 29:21 those who indict a man with a word,…
Isa 10:1-2 Woe to those who enact unjust statutes…
Pro 31:8-9 Open your mouth for those with no voice,…

Therefore, the prudent keep silent in such times,

Amos concludes that discerning people recognize the danger of openly confronting a society committed to injustice. Israel’s leaders oppressed the poor, accepted bribes, and rejected those who sought justice at the city gate. In such a hostile setting, public rebuke often invited retaliation rather than repentance. Silence reflected sober judgment about the nation’s hardened condition, not approval of its sin.

Job 13:5 If only you would remain silent; for that would be…
Pro 11:12 Whoever shows contempt for his neighbor lacks judgment…
Pro 17:28 Even a fool is considered wise if he keeps silent…

for the days are evil.

Though Israel enjoyed outward prosperity during Jeroboam II’s reign, corruption and idolatry had spread throughout the land. The nation had broken its covenant with God and was nearing the judgment Amos announced. The coming Assyrian invasion would expose the false security of a people who maintained religious activity while refusing righteousness and justice.

Eph 5:16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Psa 49:5 Why should I fear in times of trouble, when wicked usurpers…
2Ti 3:1 But understand this: In the last days…

Seek good, not evil,

Amos calls Israel to turn from the injustice, idolatry, and corruption that had marked the nation’s public and religious life. Their covenant profession required conduct shaped by God’s righteousness.

Isa 1:16-17 Wash and cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds…
Psa 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
1Pe 3:11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace…

so that you may live.

Judgment was approaching, but repentance offered the nation the possibility of being spared. Life meant more than survival; it included continued blessing under the Lord’s covenant care.

Deu 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…
Ezk 18:32 For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death,…
Lev 18:5 Keep My statutes and My judgments, for the man who…

And the LORD, the God of Hosts, will be with you,

The sovereign God who commands the armies of heaven would remain with His people if they truly returned to Him. His presence was not secured by ritual or national identity, but by faithful obedience.

Hag 2:4 But now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD.…
Psa 46:7 The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob…
Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?…

as you have claimed.

Israel claimed the Lord as its God while living contrary to His character. Amos exposes the gap between their confession and their conduct, calling for the genuine faithfulness that their claims demanded.

Deu 26:17-19 Today you have proclaimed that the LORD is your God…
2Ch 15:2 So he went out to meet Asa and said to him,…
Num 14:9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not be afraid…

Hate evil and love good;

Israel’s worship was empty while injustice, oppression, and idolatry marked the nation. God required a genuine turning from sin and a renewed commitment to what is right.

Psa 97:10 Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He delivers them…
Rom 12:9 Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil;…
Psa 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

establish justice in the gate.

The city gate served as the public place where elders and officials heard cases, settled disputes, and rendered judgments. Courts had been corrupted by bribery and favoritism, especially against the poor.

Zec 8:16 These are the things you must do: Speak truth to one another…
Deu 16:18-20 You are to appoint judges and officials in every town…
Rut 4:1-2 Meanwhile, Boaz went to the gate and sat down there.…

Perhaps the LORD, the God of Hosts,

Though judgment was approaching, repentance left open the possibility of mercy. The Lord commanded the armies of heaven and possessed full authority to judge or spare His people.

Joseph represents the northern kingdom, especially Ephraim and Manasseh. Only a remnant would remain after judgment, yet God’s grace was available to those who returned to Him.

2Sa 12:22 David answered, “While the child was alive…
Hos 11:8-9 How could I give you up, O Ephraim? How could I surrender…
Gen 45:7 God sent me before you to preserve you as a remnant…

Woe to Rebellious Israel

Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Hosts, the Lord, says:

God speaks with absolute authority as Israel’s covenant Lord and commander of heaven’s armies. The coming judgment is His own decree.

Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…
Jer 11:17 The LORD of Hosts, who planted you, has decreed disaster…

“There will be wailing in all the public squares

The places of business, assembly, and daily life will be filled with public grief. No part of the city will remain untouched by the disaster.

Isa 24:11 In the streets they cry out for wine. All joy turns to gloom…
Jer 48:38 On all the rooftops of Moab and in the public squares, everyone is mourning;…

and cries of ‘Alas! Alas!’ in all the streets.

Mourning will spread through every neighborhood as the people recognize the severity of God’s judgment.

Rev 18:10 In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance…
Rev 18:19 Then they will throw dust on their heads as they weep…

The farmer will be summoned to mourn,

Those working the land will share in the lament, showing that judgment will reach both the cities and the countryside, including the produce and livelihood of the nation.

Jol 1:11 Be dismayed, O farmers, wail, O vinedressers…
Jer 14:4 The ground is cracked because no rain has fallen.…

and the mourners to wail.

Even professional mourners will be called upon, emphasizing the scale of the national sorrow and the certainty of the calamity.

Jer 9:17-18 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Take note,…
Ecc 12:5 when men fear the heights and dangers of the road……

There will be wailing in all the vineyards,

Vineyards, ordinarily associated with harvest, celebration, and prosperity, will become places of mourning. The judgment will reach the land’s produce and the communities that depend on it, showing that Israel’s covenant unfaithfulness has brought the loss of God’s blessing.

Isa 16:10 Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard…
Isa 24:7 The new wine dries up, the vine withers.…
Jer 48:33 Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard…

for I will pass through your midst,”

The LORD Himself will come among His people in judgment. Unlike the Passover, when He spared Israel from Egypt’s plague, His presence here brings punishment because the nation has persisted in injustice and rebellion.

Exo 11:4 So Moses declared, “This is what the LORD says:…
Exo 12:12 On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt…
Exo 12:23 When the LORD passes through to strike down the Egyptians,…

says the LORD.

The coming judgment is certain because it proceeds from the sovereign God of Israel, who holds His covenant people accountable.

Jer 4:27 For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land…
Ezk 7:2 “O son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says…
Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

Woe to you who long for the Day of the LORD!

Israel expected the Day of the LORD to bring triumph over its enemies, but Amos warned that God’s judgment would begin with His covenant people. Their idolatry, injustice, and empty worship had placed them under divine condemnation rather than protection.

Jol 2:1 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm…
Zep 1:14 The great Day of the LORD is near—near and coming quickly.…
Mal 3:2 But who can endure the day of His coming?…

What will the Day of the LORD be for you?

The question exposes their false confidence in national privilege. Israel belonged to God by covenant, yet covenant blessings did not excuse rebellion. The coming day would reveal the true condition of the nation.

Jol 1:15 Alas for the day! For the Day of the LORD is near…
Isa 13:6 Wail, for the Day of the LORD is near; it will come…
Ezk 30:3 For the day is near, the Day of the LORD is near.…

It will be darkness and not light.

Rather than deliverance and prosperity, Israel would face calamity, defeat, and exile. The Day of the LORD would bring the loss of God’s favor because the people had rejected His righteousness.

Jol 2:2 a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness.…
Zep 1:15 That day will be a day of wrath, a day of trouble…
Isa 8:22 Then they will look to the earth and see only distress…

It will be like a man who flees from a lion,

Amos portrays judgment as inescapable. A man who escapes one deadly threat finds no lasting safety, for the calamity coming upon Israel will reach those who presume they can avoid it.

Lev 26:21-22 If you walk in hostility toward Me and refuse to obey Me…
Deu 32:24-25 They will be wasted from hunger and ravaged by pestilence…
2Ki 17:25 Now when the settlers first lived there,…

Deliverance from one danger leads immediately to another. Israel’s wealth, religious activity, and political security will not shield the nation from the consequences of its rebellion against the Lord.

Hos 13:8 Like a bear robbed of her cubs I will attack them,…
2Ki 2:24 Then he turned around, looked at them…

Isa 30:13 This iniquity of yours is like a breach about to fail…
Ezk 13:10-15 Because they have led My people astray, saying, ‘Peace,’…

only to be bitten by a snake.

Judgment comes even where he least expects it. Amos warns that the day of the Lord will not bring safety to an unrepentant people but darkness and disaster.

Pro 23:32 In the end it bites like a snake and stings like a viper.
Num 21:6-9 So the LORD sent venomous snakes among the people…
Jer 8:17 “For behold, I will send snakes among you,”…

Will not the Day of the LORD be darkness and not light,

Israel expected the Day of the LORD to bring victory over its enemies, but Amos warns that God’s intervention would bring judgment upon His own covenant people because of their idolatry, injustice, and empty worship. Their outward religion could not shield them from the consequences of persistent rebellion.

Zep 1:15 That day will be a day of wrath, a day of trouble…
Isa 13:10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations…
Jol 2:31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood…

even gloom with no brightness in it?

The coming judgment would offer no relief or escape for those who refused to return to the LORD. Darkness and gloom portray the devastation that would fall on Israel, exposing the false security of a people who claimed God’s favor while disregarding His commands.

Lam 3:2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness…
Job 10:21-22 before I go—never to return—to a land of darkness and gloom,…
Isa 8:22 Then they will look to the earth and see only distress…

“I hate, I despise your feasts!

Israel continued to observe the appointed festivals, such as Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles, but their worship was joined to idolatry, oppression, and injustice. What God had established as occasions for grateful remembrance and covenant fellowship had become empty public ceremonies. Their sacrifices and celebrations could not conceal their refusal to obey Him or to deal rightly with others.

Isa 1:14 I hate your New Moons and your appointed feasts…
Hos 2:11 I will put an end to all her exultation: her feasts,…

I cannot stand the stench of your solemn assemblies.

The gathered worship of the nation had become offensive because the people approached God without repentance. Their assemblies, prayers, and offerings were outwardly religious but corrupted by lives marked by violence, dishonesty, and disregard for the poor. God rejected worship that honored Him with ceremony while denying Him obedience.

Isa 1:13 Bring your worthless offerings no more; your incense…
Lev 26:31 I will reduce your cities to rubble and lay waste…

Even though you offer Me burnt offerings and grain offerings,

Israel continued to bring the sacrifices required by the Law, yet its worship was separated from obedience. Burnt offerings expressed dedication to God, and grain offerings acknowledged His provision, but the people practiced injustice, exploited the vulnerable, and trusted in ritual rather than covenant faithfulness.

Lev 1:3-4 If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd,…
Lev 2:1-3 “When anyone brings a grain offering to the LORD,…
Num 28:3-8 And tell them that this is the food offering…

I will not accept them;

God refused worship offered by people who would not turn from sin. Sacrifices were never intended to conceal rebellion or substitute for righteous conduct.

Jer 14:12 Although they may fast, I will not listen to their cry;…
Mal 1:10 Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors…
Jer 6:20 What use to Me is frankincense from Sheba or sweet cane…

for your peace offerings of fattened cattle

Even costly peace offerings, meant to symbolize reconciliation and communion with God, could not restore fellowship with Him while the nation ignored His commands. Their outward generosity did not reflect hearts committed to Him.

Lev 3:1-5 If one’s offering is a peace offering…
Exo 24:5 Then he sent out some young men of Israel,…
Lev 7:11-15 Now this is the law of the peace offering…

I will have no regard.

Divine favor could not be secured through ceremony. The sacrifices pointed beyond themselves to the need for true atonement and reconciliation, ultimately fulfilled in Christ.

Psa 40:6-8 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,…
Psa 51:16-17 For You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it…
Mic 6:6-8 With what shall I come before the LORD when I bow…

Take away from Me the noise of your songs!

God rejected Israel’s songs because their worship was joined to injustice and disobedience. Though music and sacrifices remained part of their religious life, the people had turned from covenant faithfulness. Their praise became offensive, mere noise—a clamor caused by insincerity—because it masked corruption rather than expressing devotion to God.

I will not listen to the music of your harps.

Harps accompanied Israel’s worship and celebrations, but God would not receive music offered by unrepentant people. The Lord desired righteousness and justice among His people, not ceremonies and songs detached from obedience.

But let justice roll on like a river,

God rejects Israel’s empty worship because their lives were marked by oppression and unfaithfulness. He demands justice that is active, public, and powerful, protecting the poor, the vulnerable, and those denied fair treatment.

Righteousness must be constant rather than occasional, unlike seasonal streams that quickly dry up. Israel’s covenant with God required enduring obedience expressed in honest dealings, faithful leadership, and mercy toward others.

Did you bring Me sacrifices and offerings

During Israel’s wilderness years, God provided sacrifices as part of the covenant law, yet their history was also marked by unbelief, idolatry, and rebellion. Outward offerings could not replace a faithful heart or obedience to God.

forty years in the wilderness,

The wilderness period followed Israel’s refusal to enter Canaan after the report of the spies. That generation was disciplined for its unbelief, while God sustained the nation until a new generation was prepared to enter the Promised Land.

God addresses the whole nation as His covenant people. Amos confronts Israel’s confidence in religious observance while exposing the long pattern of disobedience that had continued from the wilderness into their own day.

Israel carried Sakkuth in religious processions and treated this foreign god as a royal authority. Rather than honoring the Lord as their King, they gave allegiance to an idol drawn from the surrounding pagan world.

Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,”

Israel’s idolatry, oppression, and empty worship would bring the covenant judgment of removal from the land. Assyria, located beyond Damascus, became the instrument of that judgment when it conquered the northern kingdom in 722 BC. The exile would carry Israel far beyond its neighboring nations and end its security in the land God had given them.

says the LORD,

The judgment came from Israel’s covenant God, who had redeemed them from Egypt and established them as His people. Their rebellion was not merely against religious customs but against the Lord Himself.
