Isaiah 6
1. Isaiah, in a vision of the Lord in his glory
5. Being terrified, has apprehensions removed
8. He offers himself, and is sent to show the obstinacy of the people
13. A remnant shall be saved

And though a tenth remains in the land
This phrase suggests a remnant, a concept frequently found in the Old Testament, where God preserves a portion of His people despite widespread judgment. The "tenth" can be seen as a tithe, symbolizing a small, faithful group that remains after divine judgment. This remnant theme is echoed in passages like Amos 5:3 and Zechariah 13:8-9, where a fraction of the population survives to continue God's covenant. Historically, this reflects the survival of a faithful group during the Babylonian exile, maintaining the continuity of Israel's identity and faith.

it will be burned again
The imagery of burning indicates further purification and judgment. Fire is often used in the Bible as a symbol of purification and judgment (Malachi 3:2-3, 1 Corinthians 3:13). This suggests that even the remnant will undergo further trials to refine and purify them. Historically, this can be linked to the repeated invasions and hardships faced by Israel, which served to purify and strengthen the faith of the people.

As the terebinth and oak leave stumps when felled
The terebinth and oak are strong, resilient trees common in the region, symbolizing endurance and longevity. When these trees are cut down, their stumps remain, suggesting that life can spring forth again. This imagery is used to convey hope and the potential for renewal. In biblical symbolism, trees often represent nations or people (Daniel 4:10-12), and the stump signifies the enduring promise of God's covenant with Israel.

so the holy seed will be a stump in the land
The "holy seed" refers to the faithful remnant that will survive and eventually lead to the restoration of Israel. This concept is prophetic, pointing to the future coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who is often referred to as the "seed" (Genesis 3:15, Galatians 3:16). The stump symbolizes the continuity of God's promise and the eventual flourishing of His people. This imagery is fulfilled in the New Testament, where Jesus is seen as the shoot from the stump of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1), bringing salvation and restoration.

What Does Isaiah 6:13 Mean
And though a tenth remains in the land

• Isaiah pictures a nation so thoroughly judged that only a tithe-sized remnant survives.

• God’s faithfulness preserves this fraction, mirroring earlier promises of a “remnant” (Isaiah 1:9; 10:20-22; Romans 9:27).

• Even in punishment, the Lord keeps covenant mercy alive, assuring that His purposes for Israel cannot be extinguished (2 Kings 19:30-31).

it will be burned again

• The surviving tenth is not exempt from further refining; another wave of fire is coming.

• Fire in Scripture often speaks of purging and purification (Malachi 3:2-3; Zechariah 13:9; 1 Peter 4:17).

• This second burning signals that outward survival is not enough—God is after a purified, faithful heart among His people.

As the terebinth and oak leave stumps when felled

• Isaiah turns to familiar trees—strong, long-lived, deeply rooted—to illustrate hope after devastation.

• When such trees are cut, their stumps appear dead yet hold life potential; sprouts can re-emerge (Job 14:7-9; Daniel 4:15).

• The image reassures that God’s judgment, while severe, is never final for His covenant people.

so the holy seed will be a stump in the land

• The “holy seed” is the faithful lineage God sets apart for Himself—the remnant through whom His redemptive plan advances (Genesis 3:15; Galatians 3:16).

• From this stump will shoot the Messianic Branch (Isaiah 11:1; Matthew 1:1), proving that exile and pruning ultimately prepare the way for restoration.

• What looks like ruin is actually the groundwork for renewal: the land retains a consecrated root that will bear righteous fruit in God’s perfect timing (Isaiah 27:6).

summary

Isaiah 6:13 reveals a two-fold reality: severe judgment that spares only a remnant, and gracious preservation of a “holy seed” destined to bring forth new life. The burning refines; the stump remains. Out of apparent desolation, God ensures His promises stand, culminating in the Messiah who springs from the preserved root and secures lasting redemption for all who trust Him.

(13) But yet in it shall be a tenth . . .--Better, And though there should be a tenth in it, yet this shall be again devoured (with fire). What the prophet is led to expect is a series of successive chastisements sifting the people, till the remnant of the chosen ones alone is left. (Comp. the same thought under a different imagery in Ezekiel 5:12 : Zechariah 13:8-9.) The "tenth" is taken, as in Leviticus 27:30, for an ideally consecrated portion.

As a teil tree.--Better, terebinth; and for "when they cast their leaves" read, when they are cut down. The "teil tree" of the Authorised Version is probably meant for the "lime" (tilier, tilleul). The thought of this verse is that embodied in the name of his son Shear-jashub (see Note on Isaiah 7:3), and constantly reappears (Isaiah 1:27; Isaiah 4:2-3; Isaiah 10:20; Isaiah 29:17; Isaiah 30:15, &c). The tree might be stripped of its leaves, and its branches lopped off, and nothing but the stump left; but from that seemingly dead and decayed stock, pruned by the chastisements of God (John 15:2), a young shoot should spring, holy, as consecrated to Jehovah, and carry on the continuity of the nation's life. The same thought is dominant in St. Paul's hope for his people. At first the "remnant," and then "all Israel," should be saved (Romans 11:5; Romans 11:26). In Isaiah 10:33 to Isaiah 11:1 the same image is specially applied to the house of David, and becomes, therefore, essentially Messianic. . . .

Verse 13. - But yet in it shall be a tenth, etc.; rather, and should there still be in it a tenth; i.e. should there still remain, after the great deportation, a tenth part of the inhabitants, "this again shall be burned up," i.e. shall be destined to further judgment and destruction. The trials of the Jewish nation under the Persian, Egyptian, and Syrian monarchies may be intended. As a teil tree, and as an oak, etc.; rather, as the terebinth tree and as the oak - trees which shoot up again from the stock after being cut down; or, as the prophet expresses it, "have a stem in their destruction." So to Judah shall remain, after all, a "holy seed," which shall be its "stem" or "stock, "and from which it shall once more "take root downward, and bear fruit upward" (Isaiah 37:31).
