Jonathan Befriends David

After David had finished speaking with Saul,

David’s victory over Goliath brought him from Bethlehem into Saul’s court. Saul had asked about David’s family, and David identified himself as the son of Jesse. The meeting marked the beginning of David’s service in the royal household.

Jonathan, Saul’s son and heir to the throne, formed an immediate and lasting bond with David. Their friendship would be marked by loyalty, protection, and a covenant commitment despite Saul’s growing hostility toward David.

And from that day

Saul recognized David’s value as a warrior and leader. David’s presence also brought him into closer contact with Saul’s family, including Jonathan, while setting in motion the growing tension between the king and the young man God had chosen.

Then Jonathan made a covenant with David

Jonathan bound himself to David in a formal pledge of loyalty. As Saul’s eldest son and heir to the throne, he had reason to view David as a rival, yet he recognized God’s favor on David and chose faithfulness over personal ambition. Their covenant established a lasting bond that would shape Jonathan’s actions as Saul increasingly sought David’s life.

And Jonathan removed the robe he was wearing

Jonathan’s robe marked his royal position as Saul’s son and heir. By placing it on David, he publicly honored David and accepted that God had chosen him for a future role greater than Jonathan’s own.

Saul Envies David

So David marched out and prospered in everything Saul sent him to do,

David proved himself faithful and capable in every assignment Saul gave him. His repeated success showed that the Lord was with him and established his reputation as a courageous, dependable leader.

As the troops were returning home after David had killed the Philistine,

David’s defeat of Goliath brought a decisive victory over Israel’s Philistine enemy and established him as a national hero. What began as an act of faithful obedience became the first public step in David’s rise within Israel.

Saul received the returning army as Israel’s king, though David had won the battle. The celebration honored the nation’s victory, but the attention given to David would soon expose Saul’s growing insecurity and jealousy.

1Sa 10:24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the one…

Music accompanied the celebration as the women praised God’s provision and Israel’s victory. Their songs would soon draw a painful contrast between Saul’s reputation and David’s growing popularity.

“Saul has slain his thousands,

Saul had secured significant victories as Israel’s first king and was honored as a warrior and defender of the nation. Yet the song also placed David’s achievements beside Saul’s.

1Sa 15:7-8 Then Saul struck down the Amalekites all the way…

and David his tens of thousands.”

David’s defeat of Goliath and later victories had made him widely admired. The numbers are celebratory, emphasizing David’s greater reputation rather than providing a literal count. The comparison stirred Saul’s jealousy and marked the beginning of David’s rise as God’s chosen future king while Saul’s rule declined.

1Ch 18:1-13 Some time later, David defeated the Philistines,…
2Sa 5:17-25 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed…

And Saul was furious and resented this song.

The women’s celebration of David’s victories exposed Saul’s deepening jealousy and insecurity. Rather than rejoicing in Israel’s deliverance, he viewed David’s growing honor as a threat to his own position.

Jon 4:1 Jonah, however, was greatly displeased, and he became angry.

“They have ascribed tens of thousands to David,” he said,

The public praise given to David magnified Saul’s fear. The song honored David as a victorious warrior, and Saul recognized that the people increasingly admired him.

1Ch 14:17 And David’s fame went out into every land…
2Sa 5:10 And David became greater and greater, for the LORD…

1Sa 28:17 He has done exactly what He spoke through me: The LORD…
1Ch 10:13-14 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD…

What more can he have but the kingdom?”

Saul understood that David’s popularity could lead to the throne passing from his house. Though David had done nothing against him, Saul began to regard him as a rival, setting in motion the conflict that would dominate the remainder of Saul’s reign.

1Sa 24:20 Now I know for sure that you will be king…
1Sa 15:28 So Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom…
2Sa 3:10 to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul…

And from that day forward

David’s victory over Goliath and the public praise that followed exposed Saul’s growing fear of losing his throne. Rather than rejoicing in Israel’s deliverance, Saul began to view David as a rival. His jealousy became a settled attitude that shaped his treatment of David for the rest of his reign.

1Sa 19:1 Then Saul ordered his son Jonathan and all his servants…
1Sa 23:14 And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds…
2Sa 3:1 Now the war between the house of Saul…

Saul kept a jealous eye on David.

Saul watched David with suspicion, recognizing the favor and success that attended him. Though David served Saul faithfully and brought security to Israel, Saul’s resentment deepened into hostility. His response stood in sharp contrast to Jonathan, who recognized David’s character and loved him as a faithful friend.

1Sa 20:27 But on the day after the New Moon, the second day,…

a spirit of distress sent from God

God permitted this affliction as judgment upon Saul after his rejection of the Lord’s command. Having lost the Lord’s favor, Saul was left troubled, fearful, and increasingly unstable.

1Sa 16:14 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, …
Jdg 9:23 God sent a spirit of animosity between Abimelech…

and he prophesied inside the house

Saul fell into a disturbed, frenzied state rather than speaking a message from God. His earlier encounters with prophetic activity had marked God’s favor; now his condition revealed judgment and inner disorder.

1Sa 19:20-24 he sent messengers to seize him. But when they saw the group…
Num 11:25-26 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him,…

while David played the harp as usual.

David continued faithfully serving Saul by playing to bring relief to his troubled mind. Though Saul had begun to regard him as a threat, David remained in his service.

1Sa 16:17 And Saul commanded his servants, “Find me someone…”…
1Sa 16:23 And whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul…
1Sa 19:10 Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear.…

Now Saul was holding a spear,

The weapon, once a sign of Saul’s royal and military authority, became the means by which he acted on his growing hatred toward David.

1Sa 26:11 But the LORD forbid that I should extend my hand…

and he hurled it,

Saul threw his spear at David in a violent outburst of anger and jealousy. David’s growing success, the people’s admiration, and Samuel’s earlier anointing of David had deepened Saul’s fear of losing the kingdom.

1Sa 20:33 Then Saul hurled his spear at Jonathan to kill him.…
2Sa 16:6 He threw stones at David and all the servants of the king,…

thinking, “I will pin David to the wall.”

Saul intended to kill David without warning. Though David had faithfully served him as a soldier and musician, Saul increasingly regarded him as a rival rather than a servant.

Psa 62:3 How long will you threaten a man? Will all of you throw him…
Jdg 9:53 But a woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head,…

But David eluded him twice.

David escaped both attacks, preserving his life as Saul’s hostility became open and murderous. God’s protection over David kept him alive for the future role to which he had been chosen.

1Sa 19:12 So Michal lowered David from the window,…
1Sa 23:28 So Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet…
Psa 124:7 We have escaped like a bird from the snare…

So Saul was afraid of David,

Saul recognized that David’s success was more than personal ability or popular support. David’s victories, wisdom, and growing influence exposed the weakness of Saul’s own reign and threatened the dynasty Saul hoped to establish for his family. Fear replaced the confidence Saul once had as Israel’s king.

Jos 2:9 and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given……
Jos 2:11 When we heard this, our hearts melted…

because the LORD was with David

God’s favor rested on David, whom He had chosen and anointed to succeed Saul. David’s protection in battle and success in service demonstrated that the LORD was directing his path. Saul could not overcome David without opposing the purpose of God.

1Sa 16:18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse…
Gen 39:2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man…
1Sa 17:37 David added, “The LORD, who delivered me from the claws…

but had departed from Saul.

Saul’s persistent disobedience had brought God’s rejection of his kingship. Though Saul still occupied the throne, he no longer ruled with the divine approval and empowerment he had once received. The contrast between Saul and David revealed that God was preparing Israel for a new king.

1Sa 16:14 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, …
1Sa 28:15 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me?”…
Jdg 16:20 Then she called out, “Samson, the Philistines are here!”…

Therefore Saul sent David away

Saul’s jealousy and fear of David had become too great to ignore. Knowing that the Lord was with David, Saul sought to remove him from the royal court and limit his influence near the throne.

1Sa 19:11-12 Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house…
1Sa 21:10 That day David fled from Saul and went to Achish…
1Sa 27:1 David, however, said to himself, “One of these days…

and gave him command of a thousand men.

Saul placed David over a substantial military unit, perhaps hoping the dangers of war would accomplish what he could not openly do. Instead, the appointment gave David greater opportunity to demonstrate courage, wisdom, and leadership before Israel.

Num 31:14 But Moses was angry with the officers of the army…

David led the troops out to battle and back,

David faithfully carried out his command, leading his men into battle and returning with them safely. His continued success strengthened his standing among the soldiers and the people, while making Saul increasingly aware that David was gaining the loyalty of the nation.

David’s success remained steady as he served under Saul, won military victories, and gained favor among the people. His rise from shepherd to commander showed that the Lord was establishing him for the future kingship promised to him. His achievements were not merely personal advancement but part of God’s purpose for Israel.

God’s presence gave David protection, wisdom, and success despite Saul’s growing hostility. The Lord’s favor distinguished David from Saul, whose disobedience had brought the loss of divine blessing. David’s life points forward to Christ, the true King in whom God’s purposes are perfectly fulfilled.

Gen 39:2-3 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man…
2Sa 5:10 And David became greater and greater, for the LORD…

When Saul saw that David was very successful,

David’s victories, wise conduct, and growing acceptance among the people made clear that the Lord’s favor rested on him. His success extended beyond battle to his leadership and reputation within Israel and Saul’s own court.

Saul recognized that David’s rise threatened the dynasty he hoped to preserve. Having lost the Lord’s favor, Saul viewed David not as a faithful servant but as a rival, and his fear increasingly shaped his actions against him.

Deu 28:10 Then all the peoples of the earth will see you are called…

But all Israel and Judah loved David,

David’s favor extended throughout the tribes, including Judah, his own tribe, and the rest of Israel. His public victories and faithful service under Saul made him widely respected. The nation’s growing affection for David showed that God was preparing him for the kingship He had promised.

David Marries Michal

Then Saul said to David,

Saul addressed David with apparent favor, though his growing fear of David shaped his intentions. David’s victories and popularity had exposed Saul’s insecurity and threatened his hold on the kingdom.

1Sa 24:17 and said to David, “You are more righteous than I,…
1Sa 26:21 Then Saul replied, “I have sinned. Come back, David my son.…

“Here is my older daughter Merab.

Merab was Saul’s firstborn daughter. Giving a royal daughter in marriage would elevate David’s standing in Israel and bind him more closely to Saul’s household.

1Sa 14:49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi,…
2Sa 21:8 But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons…

I will give her to you in marriage.

Saul presented the marriage as the reward promised to the man who defeated Goliath. Yet he intended to use the arrangement to place David in greater danger rather than honor him sincerely.

1Sa 25:44 But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife,…
Gen 29:27 Finish this week’s celebration, and we will give you…

Only be valiant for me and fight the LORD’s battles.”

Saul urged David to continue leading Israel against its enemies. David had already shown courage and faithfulness in battle, but Saul hoped the demands of war would bring about his death.

1Sa 25:28 Please forgive your servant’s offense, for the LORD…
1Sa 17:47 And all those assembled here will know that it is not…
2Ch 20:15 And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!…

But Saul was thinking,

Saul concealed his real purpose behind words of royal generosity and religious duty. His concern was no longer Israel’s welfare but the removal of the man he viewed as a rival.

1Sa 23:7-8 When Saul was told that David had gone to Keilah,…
Gen 27:41 Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing…

“I need not raise my hand against him;

Saul did not want to kill David openly, perhaps fearing public reaction and the guilt of murdering a faithful servant. He sought to preserve the appearance of innocence while plotting David’s destruction.

1Sa 24:6 So he said to his men, “The LORD forbid…
1Sa 26:11 But the LORD forbid that I should extend my hand…

let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”

Saul expected Israel’s enemies to accomplish what he did not wish to do himself. Rather than trusting the LORD or leading Israel faithfully, he tried to turn David’s service in battle into a trap.

1Sa 28:19 Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel with you…
1Sa 31:1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and many fell…

And David said to Saul,

Saul’s offer of his daughter placed David before an honor that also carried political significance, since marriage into the royal house could strengthen David’s position in Israel.

1Sa 24:9 Why do you listen to the words of men who say…
1Sa 26:18 And he continued, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant?…
1Sa 26:19 Now please, may my lord the king hear the words…

“Who am I,

David answered without presumption. Though he had defeated Goliath and gained public attention, he did not regard himself as deserving a place in the king’s family.

Exo 3:11 But Moses asked God, “Who am I, that I should…
Gen 32:10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness…
Psa 8:4 what is man that You are mindful of him?…

and what is my family

Jesse’s household came from Bethlehem in Judah and held no special prominence among Israel’s leading families. David recognized the ordinary standing from which he came.

1Ch 17:16 Then King David went in, sat before the LORD…
Mic 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small…

or my father’s clan in Israel,

Jesse’s clan was neither royal nor priestly. David’s response contrasted with Saul’s concern for status and power and showed that God’s choice of David did not rest on human rank.

1Sa 9:21 Saul replied, “Am I not a Benjamite…”…
Jdg 6:15 “Please, my Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I save Israel?”…
1Sa 10:21 Then he had the tribe of Benjamin come forward by its clans,…

that I should become the son-in-law of the king?”

David understood that becoming Saul’s son-in-law would bring both privilege and responsibility. His humble reply also exposed the difference between Saul’s hidden motives and David’s sincere regard for the king’s honor.

1Sa 17:25 Now the men of Israel had been saying, “…
1Sa 17:27 The people told him about the offer, saying,…
2Sa 3:14 Then David sent messengers to say to Ish-bosheth son of Saul…

So when it was time to give Saul’s daughter Merab to David,

Saul’s earlier offer of his eldest daughter had raised the expectation that Merab would become David’s wife. David’s victory over Goliath and his continued service to Israel made him a fitting son-in-law to the king.

1Sa 17:25 Now the men of Israel had been saying, “…
1Sa 25:44 But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife,…
2Sa 3:14 Then David sent messengers to say to Ish-bosheth son of Saul…

she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah.

Saul instead gave Merab to Adriel, breaking the expectation he had created with David. The decision reveals Saul’s reluctance to bind David more closely to the royal house as David’s popularity and God-given success continued to grow.

2Sa 21:8-9 But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons…
1Sa 14:49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi,…
2Sa 6:23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no children…

Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David,

Michal’s affection for David stood in sharp contrast to Saul’s hostility toward him. Her love would bring David into Saul’s family and later place her in the difficult position of choosing between loyalty to her father and loyalty to her husband.

1Sa 19:11-17 Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house…
1Sa 25:44 But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife,…
2Sa 3:13-16 “Good,” replied David, “I will make a covenant with you.”…

and when this was reported to Saul,

Those at court recognized Michal’s feelings and brought the matter to the king. Saul viewed the news politically, not as a concern for his daughter’s welfare.

1Sa 22:9-13 But Doeg the Edomite, who had stationed himself…
1Sa 23:7-12 When Saul was told that David had gone to Keilah,…

Saul saw an opportunity to use Michal’s love to place David in danger. Though Saul intended evil, the marriage would further establish David within Israel’s royal household.

1Sa 17:25 Now the men of Israel had been saying, “…

“I will give her to David,” Saul thought,

Saul’s offer was not an act of kindness but part of a calculated effort to remove David. Royal marriages could strengthen political ties, yet Saul sought to turn his own household into an instrument against the man he increasingly regarded as a threat.

Saul intended to use his daughter and the obligations of marriage to place David in danger. His jealousy had hardened into a willingness to use those closest to him to accomplish David’s death. He planned for her to be a snare, a trap or stumbling block, for David.

Saul hoped David would be driven into a conflict with Israel’s powerful enemy and be killed without Saul appearing responsible. David’s success against the Philistines, however, would only further reveal the Lord’s favor upon him.

So Saul said to David, “For a second time now you can be my son-in-law.”

Saul renewed the marriage offer after his earlier arrangement involving Merab had failed. Behind the invitation stood another attempt to bind David to a dangerous condition and use him for Saul’s own purposes.

Marriage into the royal family appeared to be an honor and a means of securing David’s loyalty, but Saul intended to use the arrangement to place David in greater danger from the Philistines.

1Sa 17:25 Now the men of Israel had been saying, “…
2Ki 8:27 And Ahaziah walked in the ways of the house of Ahab…
2Sa 3:14 Then David sent messengers to say to Ish-bosheth son of Saul…

But when Saul’s servants relayed these words to David,

Saul’s officials delivered the king’s offer and likely expected David to welcome the opportunity. Saul intended the marriage to place David in greater danger, while keeping his own hostile purpose concealed.

Est 4:9 So Hathach went back and relayed Mordecai’s response…
Pro 25:13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest…

he replied, “Does it seem trivial in your sight to be the son-in-law of the king?

David recognized that marriage to a king’s daughter was a great honor and carried obligations beyond an ordinary marriage. His response showed that he did not presume upon Saul’s favor or regard royal status lightly.

1Sa 17:25 Now the men of Israel had been saying, “…
Num 16:9 Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel…
2Sa 3:14 Then David sent messengers to say to Ish-bosheth son of Saul…

I am a poor man and lightly esteemed.”

Though David had won victories for Israel, he came from an ordinary family and lacked the wealth expected for a royal marriage. He spoke humbly of his position, unaware that God would soon establish him as Saul’s successor.

Psa 22:6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men…

And the servants told Saul

Saul’s attendants reported David’s response concerning the bride price. As members of the royal court, they carried information between the king and those under his authority. Their report advanced Saul’s plan to place David in danger through conflict with the Philistines.

what David had said.

David did not reject the king’s offer, but regarded marriage into the royal family as an honor beyond his own position. His humility differed sharply from Saul’s growing fear and jealousy. Saul hoped David would fall before the Philistines, yet the Lord continued to preserve and exalt David.

1Sa 25:9 When David’s young men arrived, they relayed…
1Sa 24:9 Why do you listen to the words of men who say…
1Sa 26:18 And he continued, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant?…

Saul replied,

Saul spoke through his servants, using them to carry his message to David.

1Sa 19:1-2 Then Saul ordered his son Jonathan and all his servants…

Saul presented the demand as service to the kingdom and vengeance against the Philistines.

Psa 94:1 O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth.

But Saul intended to cause David’s death at the hands of the Philistines.

Saul’s offer of Michal was a calculated trap, driven by his fear of David and his desire to remove him without openly killing him.

1Sa 19:10-11 Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear.…

When the servants reported these terms to David,

Saul’s proposal offered Michal in marriage if David brought the required Philistine dowry. Saul intended the demand to expose David to deadly danger, but David saw the marriage as an honorable opportunity to join the royal household.

1Sa 17:25-27 Now the men of Israel had been saying, “…
2Sa 3:12 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf…

he was pleased to become the king’s son-in-law.

David accepted the challenge and moved quickly to fulfill Saul’s condition. His success would increase his standing in Israel while further revealing Saul’s fear of him.

David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines.

David exceeded Saul’s demand of one hundred, displaying courage, skill, and the loyalty of the men who followed him. Saul had designed the requirement to place David in deadly danger, but David returned victorious and further established his reputation among Israel as a capable military leader.

The foreskins provided the required evidence that David had defeated uncircumcised Philistines. David fulfilled Saul’s condition completely, refusing neither the danger nor the humiliation Saul intended for him.

Then Saul gave his daughter Michal to David in marriage.

David’s marriage to Michal brought him into Saul’s household and strengthened his public standing. Though Saul hoped the marriage would become a trap, it instead marked another step in David’s rise while exposing Saul’s growing fear of him.

When Saul realized that the LORD was with David

Saul could no longer ignore the evidence that God’s favor rested on David. David’s victories, growing popularity, and protection from Saul’s schemes revealed that the LORD was directing his path. Saul knew that the Spirit had departed from him, and David’s rise confirmed that God was preparing another man to lead Israel. Rather than repenting, Saul’s fear and jealousy hardened into greater opposition.

1Sa 16:18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse…
2Sa 5:10 And David became greater and greater, for the LORD…

and that his daughter Michal loved David,

Michal’s love added to Saul’s fear because it brought David into the royal household and divided Saul’s own family. Saul had hoped to use the marriage to expose David to danger, but God used it to provide David with help when Saul later sought his life. Michal’s loyalty to David showed that Saul’s hostility could not prevent the LORD’s purpose for David.

1Sa 19:11-17 Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house…
2Sa 3:13-16 “Good,” replied David, “I will make a covenant with you.”…

he grew even more afraid of David.

David’s success, the people’s affection, and the clear evidence of God’s favor confirmed Saul’s growing suspicion that David would replace him. Knowing that the Lord had rejected his own dynasty, Saul saw David not merely as a successful servant but as a threat to his throne. His fear exposed his refusal to submit to God’s judgment.

1Sa 19:1-2 Then Saul ordered his son Jonathan and all his servants…
1Sa 19:9-10 But as Saul was sitting in his house with his spear…

So from then on Saul was David’s enemy.

Saul’s jealousy hardened into lasting hostility. Though David remained loyal and served Saul faithfully, Saul increasingly opposed the man God had chosen to succeed him. This conflict began David’s long period of danger and exile, yet Saul’s efforts could not prevent God’s purpose from bringing David to the throne.

1Sa 20:30-33 Then Saul’s anger burned against Jonathan,…
1Sa 22:7-8 Then Saul said to his servants, “Listen, men of Benjamin!…
1Sa 23:7-13 When Saul was told that David had gone to Keilah,…

Every time the Philistine commanders came out for battle,

Israel faced continuing pressure from the Philistines, who controlled key coastal cities and regularly launched military campaigns. Their commanders led organized forces against Saul’s kingdom, requiring Israel’s officers to defend the nation.

2Sa 5:17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed…
1Ch 14:8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king…
2Sa 21:15 Once again the Philistines waged war against Israel…

David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers,

David repeatedly distinguished himself in these battles. The Lord gave him success, confirming the wisdom, courage, and leadership already evident in his service to Saul. While Saul’s authority weakened through disobedience and fear, David’s victories showed God’s preparation of him for future rule.

2Sa 8:6 Then he placed garrisons in Aram of Damascus,…

so that his name was highly esteemed.

David’s reputation spread throughout Israel as a capable and faithful leader. His growing honor increased the contrast between him and Saul and intensified Saul’s resentment, even as God’s purpose for David continued to unfold.

2Sa 8:13 And David made a name for himself when he returned…
1Ch 14:17 And David’s fame went out into every land…
