1 Ἐν οἷς ἐπισυναχθεισῶν τῶν μυριάδων τοῦ ὄχλου ὥστε καταπατεῖν ἀλλήλους ἤρξατο λέγειν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ πρῶτον Προσέχετε ἑαυτοῖς ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης ἥτις ἐστὶν ὑπόκρισις τῶν Φαρισαίων In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
2 οὐδὲν δὲ συγκεκαλυμμένον ἐστὶν ὃ οὐκ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται καὶ ὃ οὐ γνωσθήσεται Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.
3 ἀνθ’ ὧν ὅσα ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ εἴπατε ἐν τῷ φωτὶ ἀκουσθήσεται καὶ ὃ πρὸς τὸ οὖς ἐλαλήσατε ἐν τοῖς ταμείοις κηρυχθήσεται ἐπὶ τῶν δωμάτων Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
4 Λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν τοῖς φίλοις μου μὴ φοβηθῆτε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποκτεινόντων* τὸ σῶμα καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα μὴ ἐχόντων περισσότερόν τι ποιῆσαι “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.
5 ὑποδείξω δὲ ὑμῖν τίνα φοβηθῆτε φοβήθητε τὸν μετὰ τὸ ἀποκτεῖναι ἔχοντα ἐξουσίαν ἐμβαλεῖν εἰς τὴν γέενναν ναί λέγω ὑμῖν τοῦτον φοβήθητε But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
6 Οὐχὶ πέντε στρουθία πωλοῦνται ἀσσαρίων δύο καὶ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐκ ἔστιν ἐπιλελησμένον ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
7 ἀλλὰ καὶ αἱ τρίχες τῆς κεφαλῆς ὑμῶν πᾶσαι ἠρίθμηνται μὴ φοβεῖσθε πολλῶν στρουθίων διαφέρετε Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
8 Λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν πᾶς ὃς ἂν ὁμολογήσῃ ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὁμολογήσει ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ Θεοῦ “And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.
9 ὁ δὲ ἀρνησάμενός με ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀπαρνηθήσεται ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ Θεοῦ but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God.
10 καὶ πᾶς ὃς ἐρεῖ λόγον εἰς τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀφεθήσεται αὐτῷ τῷ δὲ εἰς τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα βλασφημήσαντι οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
11 Ὅταν δὲ εἰσφέρωσιν ὑμᾶς ἐπὶ τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας μὴ μεριμνήσητε πῶς ἢ τί ἀπολογήσησθε ἢ τί εἴπητε And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,
12 τὸ γὰρ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα διδάξει ὑμᾶς ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἃ δεῖ εἰπεῖν for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”
13 Εἶπεν δέ τις ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλε εἰπὲ τῷ ἀδελφῷ μου μερίσασθαι μετ’ ἐμοῦ τὴν κληρονομίαν Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἄνθρωπε τίς με κατέστησεν κριτὴν ἢ μεριστὴν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”
15 εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς Ὁρᾶτε καὶ φυλάσσεσθε ἀπὸ πάσης πλεονεξίας ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ περισσεύειν τινὶ ἡ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἐκ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐτῷ And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
16 Εἶπεν δὲ παραβολὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγων Ἀνθρώπου τινὸς πλουσίου εὐφόρησεν ἡ χώρα And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.
17 καὶ διελογίζετο ἐν ἑαυτῷ λέγων Τί ποιήσω ὅτι οὐκ ἔχω ποῦ συνάξω τοὺς καρπούς μου and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 καὶ εἶπεν Τοῦτο ποιήσω καθελῶ μου τὰς ἀποθήκας καὶ μείζονας οἰκοδομήσω καὶ συνάξω ἐκεῖ πάντα τὸν σῖτον καὶ τὰ ἀγαθά μου And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain.
19 καὶ ἐρῶ τῇ ψυχῇ μου Ψυχή ἔχεις πολλὰ ἀγαθὰ κείμενα εἰς ἔτη πολλά ἀναπαύου φάγε πίε εὐφραίνου And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.|’
20 Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Θεός Ἄφρων ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ τὴν ψυχήν σου ἀπαιτοῦσιν ἀπὸ σοῦ ἃ δὲ ἡτοίμασας τίνι ἔσται But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 Οὕτως ὁ θησαυρίζων ἑαυτῷ* καὶ μὴ εἰς Θεὸν πλουτῶν So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
22 Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ Διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ τί φάγητε μηδὲ τῷ σώματι (ὑμῶν) τί ἐνδύσησθε And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.
23 ἡ γὰρ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστιν τῆς τροφῆς καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
24 κατανοήσατε τοὺς κόρακας ὅτι οὐ* σπείρουσιν οὐδὲ* θερίζουσιν οἷς οὐκ ἔστιν ταμεῖον οὐδὲ ἀποθήκη καὶ ὁ Θεὸς τρέφει αὐτούς πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὑμεῖς διαφέρετε τῶν πετεινῶν Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!
25 τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν μεριμνῶν δύναται ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλικίαν αὐτοῦ προσθεῖναι πῆχυν And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?
26 εἰ οὖν οὐδὲ ἐλάχιστον δύνασθε τί περὶ τῶν λοιπῶν μεριμνᾶτε If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27 Κατανοήσατε τὰ κρίνα πῶς ‹αὐξάνει οὐ κοπιᾷ οὐδὲ νήθει› λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν οὐδὲ Σολομὼν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ περιεβάλετο ὡς ἓν τούτων Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
28 εἰ δὲ ἐν ἀγρῷ τὸν χόρτον ὄντα σήμερον καὶ αὔριον εἰς κλίβανον βαλλόμενον ὁ Θεὸς οὕτως ἀμφιέζει πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὑμᾶς ὀλιγόπιστοι But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!
29 Καὶ ὑμεῖς μὴ ζητεῖτε τί φάγητε καὶ τί πίητε καὶ μὴ μετεωρίζεσθε And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
30 ταῦτα γὰρ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τοῦ κόσμου ἐπιζητοῦσιν ὑμῶν δὲ ὁ Πατὴρ οἶδεν ὅτι χρῄζετε τούτων For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.
31 πλὴν ζητεῖτε τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ καὶ ταῦτα προστεθήσεται ὑμῖν Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
32 Μὴ φοβοῦ τὸ μικρὸν ποίμνιον ὅτι εὐδόκησεν ὁ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν δοῦναι ὑμῖν τὴν βασιλείαν “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.
33 Πωλήσατε τὰ ὑπάρχοντα ὑμῶν καὶ δότε ἐλεημοσύνην ποιήσατε ἑαυτοῖς βαλλάντια μὴ παλαιούμενα θησαυρὸν ἀνέκλειπτον ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς ὅπου κλέπτης οὐκ ἐγγίζει οὐδὲ σὴς διαφθείρει Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
34 ὅπου γάρ ἐστιν ὁ θησαυρὸς ὑμῶν ἐκεῖ καὶ ἡ καρδία ὑμῶν ἔσται For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
35 Ἔστωσαν ὑμῶν αἱ ὀσφύες περιεζωσμέναι καὶ οἱ λύχνοι καιόμενοι “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,
36 καὶ ὑμεῖς ὅμοιοι ἀνθρώποις προσδεχομένοις τὸν κύριον ἑαυτῶν πότε ἀναλύσῃ ἐκ τῶν γάμων ἵνα ἐλθόντος καὶ κρούσαντος εὐθέως ἀνοίξωσιν αὐτῷ and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.
37 μακάριοι οἱ δοῦλοι ἐκεῖνοι οὓς ἐλθὼν ὁ κύριος εὑρήσει γρηγοροῦντας ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι περιζώσεται καὶ ἀνακλινεῖ αὐτοὺς καὶ παρελθὼν διακονήσει αὐτοῖς Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.
38 κἂν ἐν τῇ δευτέρᾳ κἂν ἐν τῇ τρίτῃ φυλακῇ ἔλθῃ καὶ εὕρῃ οὕτως μακάριοί εἰσιν ἐκεῖνοι If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak.
39 Τοῦτο δὲ γινώσκετε ὅτι εἰ ᾔδει ὁ οἰκοδεσπότης ποίᾳ ὥρᾳ ὁ κλέπτης ἔρχεται (ἐγρηγόρησεν) οὐκ ἂν (καὶ) ἀφῆκεν διορυχθῆναι τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
40 καὶ ὑμεῖς γίνεσθε ἕτοιμοι ὅτι ᾗ ὥρᾳ οὐ δοκεῖτε ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔρχεται You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
41 Εἶπεν δὲ ὁ Πέτρος Κύριε πρὸς ἡμᾶς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην λέγεις ἢ καὶ πρὸς πάντας Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”
42 Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος Τίς ἄρα ἐστὶν ὁ πιστὸς οἰκονόμος ὁ φρόνιμος ὃν καταστήσει ὁ κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς θεραπείας αὐτοῦ τοῦ διδόναι ἐν καιρῷ τὸ σιτομέτριον And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?
43 μακάριος ὁ δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ὃν ἐλθὼν ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ εὑρήσει ποιοῦντα οὕτως Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.
44 ἀληθῶς λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐπὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς ὑπάρχουσιν αὐτοῦ καταστήσει αὐτόν Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
45 Ἐὰν δὲ εἴπῃ ὁ δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ Χρονίζει ὁ κύριός μου ἔρχεσθαι καὶ ἄρξηται τύπτειν τοὺς παῖδας καὶ τὰς παιδίσκας ἐσθίειν τε καὶ πίνειν καὶ μεθύσκεσθαι But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk.
46 ἥξει ὁ κύριος τοῦ δούλου ἐκείνου ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ᾗ οὐ προσδοκᾷ καὶ ἐν ὥρᾳ ᾗ οὐ γινώσκει καὶ διχοτομήσει αὐτὸν καὶ τὸ μέρος αὐτοῦ μετὰ τῶν ἀπίστων θήσει the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
47 Ἐκεῖνος δὲ ὁ δοῦλος ὁ γνοὺς τὸ θέλημα τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ καὶ μὴ ἑτοιμάσας ἢ ποιήσας πρὸς τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ δαρήσεται πολλάς And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.
48 ὁ δὲ μὴ γνοὺς ποιήσας δὲ ἄξια πληγῶν δαρήσεται ὀλίγας παντὶ δὲ ᾧ ἐδόθη πολύ πολὺ ζητηθήσεται παρ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ᾧ παρέθεντο πολύ περισσότερον αἰτήσουσιν αὐτόν But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
49 Πῦρ ἦλθον βαλεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τί θέλω εἰ ἤδη ἀνήφθη “I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
50 βάπτισμα δὲ ἔχω βαπτισθῆναι καὶ πῶς συνέχομαι ἕως ὅτου τελεσθῇ I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!
51 Δοκεῖτε ὅτι εἰρήνην παρεγενόμην δοῦναι ἐν τῇ γῇ οὐχί λέγω ὑμῖν ἀλλ’ ἢ διαμερισμόν Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.
52 ἔσονται γὰρ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν πέντε ἐν ἑνὶ οἴκῳ διαμεμερισμένοι τρεῖς ἐπὶ δυσὶν καὶ δύο ἐπὶ τρισίν For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.
53 διαμερισθήσονται πατὴρ ἐπὶ υἱῷ καὶ υἱὸς ἐπὶ πατρί μήτηρ ἐπὶ [τὴν] θυγατέρα καὶ θυγάτηρ ἐπὶ τὴν μητέρα πενθερὰ ἐπὶ τὴν νύμφην αὐτῆς καὶ νύμφη ἐπὶ τὴν πενθεράν They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
54 Ἔλεγεν δὲ καὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις Ὅταν ἴδητε [τὴν] νεφέλην ἀνατέλλουσαν ἐπὶ δυσμῶν εὐθέως λέγετε ὅτι Ὄμβρος ἔρχεται καὶ γίνεται οὕτως He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.
55 καὶ ὅταν νότον πνέοντα λέγετε ὅτι Καύσων ἔσται καὶ γίνεται And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is.
56 ὑποκριταί τὸ πρόσωπον τῆς γῆς καὶ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ οἴδατε δοκιμάζειν τὸν καιρὸν δὲ τοῦτον πῶς ‹οὐκ οἴδατε δοκιμάζειν› You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?
57 Τί δὲ καὶ ἀφ’ ἑαυτῶν οὐ κρίνετε τὸ δίκαιον “And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?
58 ὡς γὰρ ὑπάγεις μετὰ τοῦ ἀντιδίκου σου ἐπ’ ἄρχοντα ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ δὸς ἐργασίαν ἀπηλλάχθαι ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ μή‿ ποτε κατασύρῃ σε πρὸς τὸν κριτήν καὶ ὁ κριτής σε παραδώσει τῷ πράκτορι καὶ ὁ πράκτωρ σε βαλεῖ εἰς φυλακήν As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
59 λέγω σοι οὐ μὴ ἐξέλθῃς ἐκεῖθεν ἕως καὶ τὸ ἔσχατον λεπτὸν ἀποδῷς I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.” I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”
