Joshua 7

The Defeat at Ai

The Israelites, however, acted unfaithfully regarding the things devoted to destruction.

After Jericho’s victory, Israel violated God’s clear command concerning the plunder. What had been placed under the ban (Hebrew: herem) belonged to the Lord and could not be taken for personal use.

Jos 6:18-19 But keep away from the things devoted to destruction,…
Deu 13:17 Nothing devoted to destruction shall cling to your hands,…
Deu 7:26 And you must not bring any detestable thing into your house,…

Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah,

Achan is identified by name, family, and tribe, establishing his personal guilt. Though one man committed the offense, his sin affected the covenant community.

1Ch 2:7 The son of Carmi: Achar, who brought trouble upon Israel…
Gen 46:12 The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah;…

took some of what was set apart.

He secretly claimed what God had reserved, treating things set apart for destruction or the Lord’s treasury as his own. His covetous act violated God’s command, breached holiness, and dishonored His sovereignty. His act brought defilement into Israel’s camp and broke the obedience required of the nation.

1Sa 15:19-23 So why did you not obey the LORD? Why did you rush…

So the anger of the LORD burned against the Israelites.

God held Israel accountable because the nation stood before Him as one people. The coming defeat at Ai would reveal that concealed sin had disrupted their fellowship with the Lord.

Jdg 2:14 Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…
Num 25:3-4 So Israel joined in worshiping Baal of Peor,…
Num 11:1 Soon the people began to complain about their hardship…

Meanwhile, Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai,

After Jericho’s fall, Joshua prepared for the next advance into the central hill country. Ai, meaning “ruin,” was a smaller Canaanite stronghold, but its location made it important for controlling access to the surrounding region.

Jos 2:1-3 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies…

which is near Beth-aven to the east of Bethel,

Ai lay near Bethel, meaning “house of God,” an area associated with key events in Israel’s history. The terrain was rugged and elevated above the Jordan Valley, requiring a careful approach.

Jos 8:9 So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the place…

and told them, “Go up and spy out the land.”

Joshua ordered a reconnaissance mission to assess Ai’s defenses, population, and approach routes before committing the army to battle.

Num 13:17-20 When Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan…
Deu 1:24-25 They left and went up into the hill country,…
Jdg 18:2 So the Danites sent out five men from their clans…

So the men went up and spied out Ai.

The scouts carried out Joshua’s command, but the coming campaign would reveal that military planning could not succeed while sin remained unaddressed within Israel.

Num 13:21-25 So they went up and spied out the land…
Jos 8:3-4 So Joshua and the whole army set out to attack Ai.…
Jos 8:10-12 Joshua got up early the next morning…

On returning to Joshua, they reported,

Joshua’s spies returned from Ai, a small hill-country city east of Bethel, and delivered their military assessment to Israel’s leader.

Jos 2:23-24 Then the two men started back, came down from the hill…
Num 13:26 and they went back to Moses, Aaron, and the congregation…
Deu 1:25 They took some of the fruit of the land in their hands……

“There is no need to send all the people;

Their report treated Ai as a minor target and recommended a limited operation rather than a full mobilization.

Jdg 7:2-7 Then the LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many men…
2Ch 14:11 Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God: “O LORD,…

two or three thousand men are enough to go up and attack Ai.

The proposed force reflected confidence that Ai could be taken easily, despite its defensible location and the need to advance uphill against the city.

Jos 8:3-4 So Joshua and the whole army set out to attack Ai.…
1Sa 13:2 He chose for himself three thousand men of Israel:…
Luk 14:31-32 Or what king on his way to war with another king…

Since the people of Ai are so few,

The scouts judged the situation by the city’s apparent size and strength. They did not recognize that Israel’s success depended on the Lord’s favor, which had been disrupted by Achan’s sin.

Jos 8:25 A total of twelve thousand men and women fell that day—…
1Sa 14:6 Jonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come…
Psa 105:12 When they were few in number, few indeed,…

you need not wear out all our people there.”

Their concern for preserving the larger army was practical, but the advice led Israel to approach Ai without understanding the spiritual cause that would bring defeat.

Exo 18:18 Surely you and these people will wear yourselves out…
Num 11:14-17 I cannot carry all these people by myself;…
Deu 1:12 But how can I bear your troubles, burdens…

So about three thousand men went up,

Israel sent a small force against Ai, trusting the spies’ assessment that the city could be taken easily. After Jericho’s fall, the leaders acted on human calculation rather than seeking the Lord’s direction.

1Sa 13:2 He chose for himself three thousand men of Israel:…
Jos 8:1-2 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid…

but they fled before the men of Ai.

Ai’s defenders routed Israel, exposing the seriousness of Achan’s sin and the loss of God’s favor upon the camp. The unexpected defeat humbled Israel and showed that victory in Canaan depended on obedience to God, not numbers or recent success.

Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…
Lev 26:17 Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee…
Deu 1:42-44 But the LORD said to me, “Tell them not to go up and fight,…

And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six of them,

Israel’s first battle after Jericho ended in an unexpected loss. Though the number was small compared with the nation’s army, each death exposed the seriousness of Achan’s disobedience and the effect of covenant unfaithfulness upon the whole camp.

chasing them from the gate as far as the quarries

Ai’s defenders drove Israel from the city entrance and pursued them into the surrounding countryside. What had begun as a confident attack became a disorderly retreat, revealing that Israel could not rely on recent victories or military strength.

Jos 10:10-11 And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel,…
1Sa 17:52 Then the men of Israel and Judah charged forward…
Jdg 20:43 They surrounded the Benjamites, pursued them, and…

and striking them down on the slopes.

The retreat through the rugged terrain left the fleeing soldiers exposed to further attack. The men of Ai gained the advantage as Israel’s forces lost cohesion and courage.

Deu 1:44 Then the Amorites who lived in the hills came out…
Jdg 20:45 Then the Benjamites turned and fled toward the wilderness…

So the hearts of the people melted and became like water.

The fear once felt by Israel’s enemies now seized Israel itself. The defeat shook the nation because it showed that the Lord’s favor could not be presumed upon while sin remained unaddressed.

Then Joshua tore his clothes

Joshua responded to Israel’s defeat at Ai with public grief and alarm. The loss revealed that something was seriously wrong in Israel’s relationship with the LORD, since He had promised victory in the land.

Joshua and the leaders came before the ark, the appointed sign of the LORD’s presence among Israel. Joshua’s posture expressed humility, dependence, and an urgent appeal for God to reveal why Israel had fallen.

The victory at Jericho had confirmed God’s power, but the setback at Ai left Joshua unable to see why Israel had failed. He feared that their entrance into Canaan now appeared threatened.

Num 14:2-3 All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron,…
Deu 9:28 Otherwise, those in the land from which You brought us out…

If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan!

In distress, Joshua looked back to the security of the eastern side of the river rather than forward to the promised inheritance. His lament revealed the seriousness of Israel’s situation and prepared for God’s disclosure that sin within the camp had brought defeat.

Israel’s retreat revealed that the nation’s sin had interrupted its fellowship with God. Achan’s taking of what had been devoted to destruction brought guilt upon the camp.

Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…

and run from its enemies?

The soldiers who had recently witnessed Jericho’s fall fled before the men of Ai. Their defeat showed that Israel could not claim victory apart from obedience to God.

1Sa 4:10-11 So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated…
Deu 1:44 Then the Amorites who lived in the hills came out…
Num 14:45 Then the Amalekites and Canaanites came down…

When the Canaanites and all who live in the land hear about this,

Israel feared that the defeat at Ai would spread quickly among the peoples of Canaan. Their earlier victories had revealed the power of the Lord, but this loss could encourage their enemies to unite against them.

Exo 15:14-16 The nations will hear and tremble; anguish will grip…
Jos 2:9-11 and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given……
Num 14:13-16 But Moses said to the LORD, “The Egyptians will hear of it,…

they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth.

Israel faced the real danger of being overwhelmed by the fortified Canaanite cities and their armies. Joshua understood that destruction would threaten not only the nation’s survival but also the fulfillment of God’s covenant promises to the patriarchs.

Psa 83:4 Come, let us erase them as a nation; may the name of Israel…
Psa 109:13 May his descendants be cut off; may their name be blotted…
Deu 28:52 They will besiege all the cities throughout your land,…

Then what will You do for Your great name?”

Joshua appealed to the Lord’s honor among the nations. If Israel were destroyed, the surrounding peoples would interpret it as evidence that the God who had brought them out of Egypt could not preserve them in the land He promised them.

Exo 32:11-14 But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God, saying,…
Num 14:13-19 But Moses said to the LORD, “The Egyptians will hear of it,…
Ezk 36:20-23 And wherever they went among the nations,…

But the LORD said to Joshua,

God addressed Joshua directly as Israel’s appointed leader after the defeat at Ai. The Lord did not leave Joshua to interpret the disaster on his own but revealed that Israel’s loss resulted from disobedience within the camp.

Jos 8:1 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid…
Jos 3:7 Now the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin…
Jos 6:2 And the LORD said to Joshua, “Behold, I have delivered…

“Stand up!

Joshua was to rise from mourning and carry out the responsibility God had given him. The immediate need was not continued grief but the removal of the sin that had broken Israel’s covenant obedience.

Dan 10:11 He said to me, “Daniel, you are a man who is highly precious…
Act 26:16 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared…

Why have you fallen on your face?

Joshua’s distress was real, but God directed him toward the cause of Israel’s defeat. Achan had taken what was devoted to destruction at Jericho, bringing guilt upon the nation and preventing Israel from advancing in God’s power.

Jos 5:14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander…”…
Gen 17:3 Then Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,
Num 16:4 When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.

Israel has sinned;

Though Achan alone committed the act, Israel stood accountable because the nation was bound together under God’s covenant. His hidden disobedience brought guilt and defeat upon the whole camp.

Jos 22:20 Was not Achan son of Zerah unfaithful…
2Ki 17:7 All this happened because the people of Israel had sinned…

they have transgressed My covenant that I commanded them,

Achan’s sin was not merely private wrongdoing but a violation of God’s direct command to Israel and a transgression of the Mosaic Covenant given at Mount Sinai. The covenant required obedience, and disobedience placed the nation under its stated judgment.

Hos 6:7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant;…
Jer 11:10 They have returned to the sins of their forefathers…

and they have taken some of what was devoted to destruction.

The spoil of Jericho had been devoted to destruction (herem), set apart for God, and was not available for personal use. By taking it, Achan treated what belonged to God as his own.

Jos 6:18-19 But keep away from the things devoted to destruction,…
Deu 13:16-17 And you are to gather all its plunder in the public square…

Indeed, they have stolen and lied,

Achan stole the forbidden items and concealed his act while Israel suffered the consequences at Ai. His secrecy did not hide the matter from God.

Act 5:1-11 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife…
Pro 21:6 Making a fortune by a lying tongue is a vanishing mist,…

He buried the devoted items among his household goods, attempting to keep them for himself. What he hid in his tent became evidence of his rebellion and brought judgment upon his household.

2Ki 5:24 When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the gifts…
Deu 7:26 And you must not bring any detestable thing into your house,…

This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies.

Israel’s defeat at Ai resulted from Achan’s violation of God’s command concerning the devoted things of Jericho. Though one man sinned, the nation had broken covenant faithfulness and suffered the consequences together.

Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…
Deu 1:42 But the LORD said to me, “Tell them not to go up and fight,…
Jdg 2:14 Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…

They will turn their backs and run from their enemies,

The people who had seen God give them victory at Jericho now fled in fear. Their defeat showed that military strength and numbers could not secure success when God’s favor was withdrawn.

Lev 26:17 Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee…
Isa 30:16-17 “No,” you say, “we will flee on horses.”…
Lev 26:36-37 As for those of you who survive, I will send a faintness…

because they themselves have been set apart for destruction.

By taking what belonged to God, Achan brought Israel under the judgment of herem—things set apart for God through destruction—that had fallen on Jericho. The nation could not continue its conquest while harboring what God had condemned.

Deu 7:26 And you must not bring any detestable thing into your house,…
Deu 13:17 Nothing devoted to destruction shall cling to your hands,…
Deu 20:17 For you must devote them to complete destruction…

I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.

God required Israel to expose and remove the sin from its midst before His presence and blessing could be restored. Joshua’s task was not merely to improve Israel’s military strategy, but to lead the people in dealing decisively with the covenant violation.

Exo 33:3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey.…
Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…
Num 5:3 You must send away male and female alike; send them outside…

Get up and consecrate the people, saying,

Joshua was to act without delay and prepare Israel for God’s examination of the camp. Consecration called the people to purification and readiness before the holy God who dwelt among them.

Exo 19:10-11 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to the people…
Exo 19:14 When Moses came down from the mountain to the people,…

‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow,

The next day would bring the exposure of the offense and the removal of what had defiled Israel. The people were to prepare themselves soberly, recognizing that the defeat at Ai was tied to sin within the nation.

Num 11:18 And say to the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow,…
Jos 3:5 Then Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves,…

Joshua spoke under divine authority. The covenant God who had brought Israel into the land now addressed their disobedience and required accountability.

1Sa 10:18 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
Jdg 6:8 He sent them a prophet, who told them…

Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction.

Property from Jericho had been taken despite God’s command that it be devoted to Him. Achan’s hidden sin had violated the ban placed on the city and brought guilt upon the whole camp.

Jos 6:18 But keep away from the things devoted to destruction,…
Deu 7:26 And you must not bring any detestable thing into your house,…
Deu 13:17 Nothing devoted to destruction shall cling to your hands,…

You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.

Israel’s military strength could not overcome God’s displeasure. Until the forbidden items and the sin connected with them were removed, the Lord would not give His people victory.

Jdg 2:14 Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…
Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…
Lev 26:17 Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee…

In the morning you must present yourselves tribe by tribe.

Israel was to assemble at the beginning of the day for the Lord’s judgment concerning the forbidden spoils taken from Jericho. The orderly gathering recognized the covenant structure of the nation, with all twelve tribes accountable before God for the sin that had brought defeat at Ai.

Exo 34:2-3 Be ready in the morning, and come up on Mount Sinai…
Jdg 20:1-2 Then all the Israelites from Dan to Beersheba…

The tribe that the LORD selects shall come forward clan by clan,

The Lord would identify the guilty tribe and then narrow the inquiry through its clans. What had been hidden from Joshua and Israel was fully known to God. The process showed that the loss at Ai was not accidental but resulted from disobedience within the camp.

1Sa 10:19-21 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you…
Num 26:52-56 Then the LORD said to Moses,…

and the clan that the LORD selects shall come forward family by family,

The investigation continued through the households of the selected clan. Although Achan alone had taken the devoted things, his sin had affected the whole nation because Israel stood under God’s covenant and shared responsibility for removing evil from among them.

Num 3:15-16 Number the Levites by their families and clans.…
Num 1:2-4 “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel…

and the family that the LORD selects shall come forward man by man.

The final examination would reveal the individual responsible. Achan could not remain concealed, and he would answer personally for his rebellion. God’s judgment was careful and just, exposing the offender while confirming the guilt that had brought trouble upon Israel.

Act 1:24-26 And they prayed, “Lord, You know everyone’s heart.…

The one who is caught with the things devoted to destruction

Achan had taken what belonged to the LORD from Jericho. His theft of the silver, gold, and Babylonian garment violated God’s command that Jericho’s devoted plunder, or herem—devoted to God for destruction—be reserved for Him or destroyed.

Jos 6:18 But keep away from the things devoted to destruction,…
Deu 13:17 Nothing devoted to destruction shall cling to your hands,…
1Sa 15:21 The troops took sheep and cattle from the plunder…

must be burned, along with all that belongs to him,

The judgment required the complete removal of Achan, his household, and his possessions from Israel. His sin had brought God’s displeasure upon the nation and could not be treated as a private matter.

Deu 13:16-17 And you are to gather all its plunder in the public square…
Jos 6:24 Then the Israelites burned up the city and everything in it.…

because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD

Achan had broken the covenant obligations Israel accepted before God. By taking what was devoted to the LORD, he acted against God’s direct command and brought guilt upon the whole camp.

Jos 23:16 If you transgress the covenant of the LORD,…
Hos 6:7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant;…
Jer 11:10 They have returned to the sins of their forefathers…

His act was a disgraceful betrayal within the covenant community. The punishment showed that rebellion against God’s command endangered Israel’s standing before Him.

The Sin of Achan

So Joshua arose early the next morning

Joshua acted without delay after the Lord revealed that sin had brought judgment upon Israel. His prompt response showed the seriousness of the matter and his responsibility to restore the nation to obedience.

Jos 3:1 Early the next morning Joshua got up and left Shittim…
Jos 6:12 Joshua got up early the next morning, and the priests…
Jos 8:10 Joshua got up early the next morning…

and had Israel come forward tribe by tribe,

Israel was assembled in an orderly process as the Lord directed, with the guilty person being identified by lot. The public procedure established that the decision came from God and that Achan’s sin had affected the whole covenant community.

1Sa 10:20-21 Thus Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward,…
Num 17:2-5 Speak to the Israelites and take from them twelve staffs,…
1Sa 14:41-42 So Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel,…

and the tribe of Judah was selected.

Judah, one of Israel’s leading tribes and the tribe later associated with David’s royal line, was brought under scrutiny. The selection exposed that the offense was not distant or insignificant, but present within a tribe of great future importance in Israel.

Psa 78:67-68 He rejected the tent of Joseph, and refused…
1Ch 28:4 Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me…
1Ch 5:2 And though Judah prevailed over his brothers, …

He had the clans of Judah come forward,

Within the tribe identified by the Lord, the inquiry was narrowed to the clans of Judah. Israel’s defeat at Ai resulted from Achan’s disobedience, which violated the covenant and brought consequences upon the whole nation.

and the clan of the Zerahites was selected.

The search moved from Judah to the descendants of Zerah, revealing that God had not overlooked the hidden sin that had brought trouble upon Israel.

Num 26:20-22 These were the descendants of Judah by their clans…
Gen 38:29-30 But when he pulled his hand back and his brother came out,…

He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward,

and the family of Zabdi was selected.

Zabdi’s household was the next step toward Achan, demonstrating that the Lord knew the offender and would remove the sin from the camp.

Jos 22:20 Was not Achan son of Zerah unfaithful…
Act 1:24-26 And they prayed, “Lord, You know everyone’s heart.…

And he had the family of Zabdi come forward man by man,

The search narrowed within Judah’s clan structure, where households and families were known and accountable before the nation. The lot identified Zabdi’s family, showing that the theft concealed in Achan’s tent had not escaped the Lord’s notice.

1Sa 10:20-21 Thus Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward,…
1Sa 14:41-42 So Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel,…
Num 26:55-56 Indeed, the land must be divided by lot;…

and Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah,

Achan belonged to the tribe of Judah through the line of Zerah. His full ancestry establishes his place within Israel and removes any uncertainty concerning the offender.

The lot exposed Achan as the man responsible for violating the command concerning Jericho’s devoted things. His hidden act had brought judgment upon Israel, and his selection prepared the way for his confession and the removal of sin from the camp.

Achan could honor God only by acknowledging His sovereignty and that the Lord’s judgment was righteous. His confession would confirm that God had revealed the truth and had dealt justly with Israel.

1Sa 6:5 Make images of your tumors and of the rats…
Jhn 9:24 So a second time they called for the man who had been blind…
Rev 14:7 And he said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give Him glory,…

and make a confession to Him.

Achan was called to admit his disobedience openly before God and Israel. The stolen goods from Jericho had been devoted to destruction, and taking them was a direct violation of God’s command.

Lev 5:5 If someone incurs guilt in one of these ways,…
Num 5:7 He must make full restitution, add a fifth to its value,…
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just…

I urge you to tell me what you have done;

Joshua required a full account of Achan’s actions. The matter had to be brought into the open so that Israel could be cleansed from the sin that had brought defeat.

1Sa 14:43 “Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him……
Gen 4:10 “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out…
Gen 3:13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this…

do not hide it from me.”

Nothing Achan had done was concealed from the Lord, who had already identified him. His confession would establish the justice of the sentence that followed.

Pro 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper,…
Psa 32:5 Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide…
Job 31:33 If I have covered my transgressions like Adam…

“It is true,”

Achan begins by admitting the truth after his sin has been exposed before Israel.

Dan 9:5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly.…
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just…

Achan replied,

Standing before Joshua, Achan, whose name means “troubler,” accepts personal responsibility for the disobedience that brought defeat and judgment upon the nation.

Num 22:34 “I have sinned,” Balaam said to the angel of the LORD,…
1Sa 15:20 “But I did obey the LORD,” Saul replied. “I went on the mission…”…
Act 5:8 “Tell me,” said Peter, “is this the price…”…

“I have sinned against the LORD,

He recognizes that his act of taking what God had devoted to destruction was rebellion against God Himself.

1Sa 15:24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned;…

the God of Israel.

Achan had violated the covenant obligation of a member of Israel, and his private sin had brought consequences upon the whole camp.

1Ki 8:23 O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven…
2Sa 7:27 For You, O LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,…
1Ki 17:1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers…

This is what I did:

He proceeds to give a full account of his actions, revealing what he had concealed.

2Ki 18:14 So Hezekiah king of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria…
1Sa 26:21 Then Saul replied, “I have sinned. Come back, David my son.…

When I saw among the spoils

After Jericho’s fall, Achan found items that had been placed under God’s ban and reserved for His treasury or destruction. Though soldiers normally claimed plunder after battle, Jericho was the firstfruits of Canaan and belonged wholly to the Lord.

Gen 3:6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food…
2Sa 11:2 One evening David got up from his bed and strolled around…
1Sa 15:19-21 So why did you not obey the LORD? Why did you rush…

a beautiful cloak from Shinar,

The costly garment came from the region of Babylon and represented foreign luxury and status. Its beauty stirred Achan’s desire for what God had forbidden.

Zec 5:11 “To build a house for it in the land of Shinar,”…
Gen 11:2-4 And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain…
Rev 18:12-16 cargo of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls;…

two hundred shekels of silver,

The silver was a substantial amount and had been designated for the Lord’s treasury.

Exo 12:35-36 Furthermore, the Israelites acted on Moses’ word…
Deu 7:25-26 You must burn up the images of their gods; do not covet…
2Ki 5:22-23 “Everything is all right,” Gehazi replied.…

and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels,

The gold added greatly to the value of the stolen goods and showed that Achan deliberately chose personal gain over obedience.

2Sa 12:30 Then he took the crown from the head of their king.…
Exo 32:2-4 So Aaron told them, “Take off the gold earrings…
Dan 5:2-4 Under the influence of the wine, Belshazzar gave orders…

I coveted them and took them.

Achan’s sin began in his heart, then led to theft and rebellion against God’s command. His actions brought guilt upon Israel because he took what had been devoted to the Lord.

Exo 20:17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.…
Deu 5:21 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife……
1Ki 21:1-4 Some time after these events, Naboth the Jezreelite…

They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”

Achan concealed the evidence beneath his tent, but his secret sin could not remain hidden. The buried items confirmed his confession and exposed the cause of Israel’s defeat at Ai.

Gen 31:33-35 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, then Leah’s tent…
2Ki 5:24-27 When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the gifts…
Num 32:23 But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin…

So Joshua sent messengers

Joshua acted at once to verify Achan’s confession and carry out the Lord’s instructions. As Israel’s leader, he dealt openly and decisively with sin that had brought judgment upon the nation.

Gen 32:3-6 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau…
Jdg 11:12-13 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites…
2Ki 1:2-4 Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room…

who ran to the tent,

The messengers hurried because the matter concerned Israel’s covenant standing before God. Achan’s tent was the place where he had concealed what belonged to the Lord.

Exo 33:7-11 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it…
2Sa 7:6-7 For I have not dwelt in a house from the day…
Heb 9:2-8 A tabernacle was prepared. In its first room were…

and there it all was,

The search confirmed every detail Achan had confessed. God had exposed what was hidden, and the evidence established his guilt before the whole community.

Luk 12:2-3 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed…
1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;…
Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;…

hidden in his tent,

Achan had tried to keep his disobedience private, burying the devoted items within his household. His secret act had nevertheless affected all Israel and contributed to their defeat at Ai.

Gen 31:33-35 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, then Leah’s tent…
Deu 13:14-15 then you must inquire, investigate,…

with the silver underneath.

The silver lay beneath the robe and gold, showing that the stolen goods had been deliberately concealed. Achan’s desire for wealth led him to take what God had forbidden and to place personal gain above obedience.

Gen 44:1-2 Then Joseph instructed his steward: “Fill the men’s sacks…
2Ki 5:24-27 When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the gifts…
Deu 7:25-26 You must burn up the images of their gods; do not covet…

They took the things from inside the tent,

Achan had concealed the robe, silver, and gold taken from Jericho, property devoted to the LORD under the ban. His theft had brought guilt upon Israel and led to Israel’s defeat at Ai.

Gen 31:33-35 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, then Leah’s tent…
2Ki 7:8-10 When the lepers reached the edge of the camp,…
Luk 12:2-3 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed…

brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites,

The stolen items were presented publicly before Israel’s leader and the congregation. Achan’s sin was not treated as a private matter, since it had affected the whole nation and violated God’s command.

Num 15:32-36 While the Israelites were in the wilderness, a man was found…
Lev 24:10-16 Now the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father…
Deu 17:8-13 If a case is too difficult for you to judge,…

and spread them out before the LORD.

The evidence was placed in the LORD’s presence as proof of Achan’s guilt and of God’s justice in exposing what had been hidden. Israel could now remove the devoted things and deal with the transgression that had disrupted their covenant fellowship with God.

Lev 24:5-9 You are also to take fine flour and bake twelve loaves…
Num 17:7-10 Then Moses placed the staffs before the LORD…
Exo 16:32-34 Keep an omer of manna for the generations to come,…

Then Joshua, together with all Israel,

Joshua led the nation in carrying out God’s judgment, showing that Achan’s sin had brought guilt and defeat upon the whole camp. Israel’s unity in this action reaffirmed the covenant order that had been violated.

Deu 17:7 The hands of the witnesses shall be the first…
Num 15:35-36 And the LORD said to Moses, “The man must surely be put…

Achan belonged to the tribe of Judah, the tribe entrusted with a leading role among Israel. His deliberate disobedience brought disgrace upon his household and tribe.

the silver, the cloak, the bar of gold,

The stolen objects were devoted spoil from Jericho and belonged to the Lord. Achan’s covetousness led him to take what God had forbidden, placing personal gain above obedience.

his sons and daughters,

Achan’s family was brought to the place of judgment with him. His sin affected his entire household and demonstrated that hidden rebellion could not remain a private matter within Israel.

Num 16:32-33 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them…
Exo 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them;…

his oxen and donkeys and sheep,

His livestock represented his wealth and livelihood. Their inclusion showed that nothing connected with Achan’s rebellion would remain to preserve its benefit or memory.

his tent, and everything else he owned,

The tent was where Achan had concealed the devoted items. All that belonged to him was removed from the camp so that Israel would be cleansed from the defilement caused by his sin.

Num 16:26-27 And he warned the congregation, “Move away now…
Deu 13:16-17 And you are to gather all its plunder in the public square…

and brought them to the Valley of Achor.

The Valley of Achor, meaning “trouble,” received its name from this event. It stood as a lasting reminder that disobedience to God brought trouble upon Israel.

Hos 2:15 There I will give back her vineyards…
Jos 15:7 Then the border went up to Debir from the Valley of Achor,…
Isa 65:10 Sharon will become a pasture for flocks,…

“Why have you brought this trouble upon us?” said Joshua.

Achan’s theft of what was devoted to the LORD brought guilt and defeat upon Israel at Ai. As Israel’s leader, Joshua declared the seriousness of Achan’s rebellion against God’s command.

Jos 6:18 But keep away from the things devoted to destruction,…
Gen 34:30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought…
1Ch 2:7 The son of Carmi: Achar, who brought trouble upon Israel…

“Today the LORD will bring trouble upon you!”

Achan had brought disaster upon the nation, and God’s judgment now fell upon him. His punishment showed that Israel could not retain devoted things for personal gain without violating the covenant.

1Ki 21:21 This is what the LORD says: ‘I will bring calamity…
2Sa 12:11 This is what the LORD says: ‘I will raise up adversity…
Jer 18:11 Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents…

And all Israel stoned him to death.

The people carried out God’s judgment together, removing the offender from among them and acknowledging the harm his sin had brought upon the whole camp.

Lev 24:14-16 Take the blasphemer outside the camp…
Deu 17:5-7 you must bring out to your gates the man or woman…
Num 15:35-36 And the LORD said to Moses, “The man must surely be put…

Then they stoned the others and burned their bodies.

Achan’s household and all that belonged to him were destroyed with him. The judgment removed the defilement connected with his sin and brought the matter to its final end.

Deu 13:15-16 you must surely put the inhabitants of that city…
Deu 13:10-11 Stone him to death for trying to turn you away…
1Sa 31:12-13 all their men of valor set out, journeyed all night…

And they heaped over Achan a large pile of rocks

The stones marked the place of judgment and preserved the memory of Achan’s rebellion against God’s command. Israel acted together, acknowledging the seriousness of covenant unfaithfulness within the nation.

Jos 8:29 He hung the king of Ai on a tree until evening…
2Sa 18:17 They took Absalom, cast him into a large pit in the forest…

that remains to this day.

The memorial was still visible when the account was recorded, bearing witness to the historical event and warning later generations against disobedience.

Jos 4:9 Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle…
1Sa 6:18 The number of gold rats also corresponded to the number…

So the LORD turned from His burning anger.

Achan’s sin had brought guilt upon Israel and disrupted its standing before the Lord. With judgment carried out, the offense was removed and God’s anger against the nation was turned away.

Num 25:11 Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest,…
Deu 13:17 Nothing devoted to destruction shall cling to your hands,…

Therefore that place is called the Valley of Achor to this day.

The valley’s name, meaning trouble, kept Achan’s sin and its consequences linked to a real place in Israel’s land. What began as a site of judgment would later stand as a reminder that God can bring restoration after repentance.

Hos 2:15 There I will give back her vineyards…
Isa 65:10 Sharon will become a pasture for flocks,…
