Genesis 9

The Covenant of the Rainbow

And God blessed Noah and his sons

God renewed the blessing first given at creation, showing that the flood had not ended His purpose for mankind. Noah and his sons became the heads of the post-flood human family, sustained by God’s mercy despite human sin.

Gen 5:2 Male and female He created them, and He blessed them.…

and said to them,

God personally established the order and responsibilities that would govern life in the renewed world.

Gen 7:1 Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark…
Gen 6:13 Then God said to Noah, “The end of all living creatures”…

“Be fruitful and multiply

Noah’s family was commanded to increase, restoring human life across a world emptied by judgment. Marriage, family, and the raising of children remained central to God’s design for human society.

Humanity was to spread throughout the earth and exercise responsible dominion over it, rather than gather in one place and resist God’s purpose.

Gen 11:9 That is why it is called Babel, for there the LORD…

The fear and dread of you will fall on every living creature on the earth,

After the Flood, animals would no longer relate to mankind as they had in the original creation. Their instinctive fear of people would restrain dangerous encounters and establish mankind’s renewed rule over the animal world.

Birds, though moving freely above the earth, were included under human authority and care.

The rule given to Noah’s family reached into the waters as well, encompassing every sphere of animal life.

Psa 104:25-26 Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures…

God entrusted animals to humanity for lawful use and responsible stewardship. Human authority over them was real, yet it remained accountable to the Creator who made and sustained them.

Gen 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply…

Everything that lives and moves will be food for you;

After the flood, God permitted Noah and his descendants to eat animal flesh as well as plants. This provision met humanity’s needs in a changed world and confirmed that the animals preserved through the ark were also given for human sustenance.

just as I gave you the green plants,

God’s earlier gift of vegetation remained part of His care for mankind. The new permission did not replace the original provision but expanded it, showing His continued oversight of human life after the flood.

Psa 104:14-15 He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops…
Dan 1:12-16 Please test your servants for ten days…

I now give you all things.

God granted humanity broad use of the living creatures under its stewardship. The gift carried responsibility: people were to receive creation as God’s provision and live under the limits He established.

But you must not eat meat

God permitted Noah and his descendants to eat animals after the flood, while preserving a clear boundary around the taking of life. Human authority over animals did not remove God’s ownership of all living creatures.

with its lifeblood

Blood represents the life God gives. Animals could be killed for food, but their blood was not to be treated as ordinary nourishment.

Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood…
Lev 17:14 For the life of all flesh is its blood.…

still in it.

The blood was to be drained before the meat was eaten, acknowledging that life belongs to God. This command established a lasting distinction between the use of animals for food and disregard for the life God created.

1Sa 14:33 Then someone reported to Saul: “Look, the troops…
Lev 17:13 And if any Israelite or foreigner living among them…
Deu 12:24 You must not eat the blood; pour it on the ground…

And surely I will require the life of any man or beast

God establishes the value of human life after the flood and holds both people and animals accountable for its unlawful taking. An animal that kills a person is subject to judgment because human life bears God’s image.

Lev 24:17-18 And if a man takes the life of anyone else,…

Num 35:30-31 If anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death…

Blood represents life, and its violent shedding cannot be treated as a private matter or ignored as an accident. God recognizes the victim’s life and acts as its defender.

Num 35:33 Do not pollute the land where you live, …
Deu 19:10-13 Thus innocent blood will not be shed in the land…

I will demand an accounting from anyone

Judgment for murder ultimately belongs to God. Human authorities may administer justice, but every killer answers to the Creator whose image has been violated.

Mat 5:21-22 You have heard that it was said to the ancients,…

Whoever sheds the blood of man,

Murder is a direct assault on the life God has given. After the flood, God established this command for Noah and his descendants as humanity began again under His covenant.

Exo 21:12 Whoever strikes and kills a man must surely be put to death.
Num 35:16-18 If, however, anyone strikes a person with an iron object…
Pro 6:16-17 There are six things that the LORD hates,…

by man his blood will be shed;

God assigned human authorities the duty of restraining violence and administering justice. The punishment corresponds to the crime because the deliberate taking of innocent life attacks God’s order for human society.

Lev 24:17 And if a man takes the life of anyone else,…
Rom 13:4 For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong,…

for in His own image God has made mankind.

Every human life bears God-given dignity because mankind was created in God’s image. This remains true after the fall and provides the foundation for the protection of life and the accountability of those who destroy it.

Gen 6:18 But I will establish My covenant with you,…
Gen 17:9 God also said to Abraham, “You must keep My covenant—…

be fruitful and multiply;

Noah’s family is commanded to bear children and establish new generations. Human life is preserved not merely for survival, but for the restoration of families, communities, and ordered society.

The descendants of Noah were not to remain gathered in one place. God intended for the whole earth to be inhabited and cultivated by mankind.

Gen 10:32 From these the nations of the earth spread out…
Gen 11:8-9 So the LORD scattered them from there…
Act 17:26 From one man He made every nation of men,…

The repeated command underscores God’s purpose that humanity would again fill the world. Though judgment had ended the former generation, God provided a new beginning through Noah’s household.

Exo 1:7 but the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied;…
Gen 48:16 the angel who has redeemed me from all harm—…

to Noah and his sons

Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth stood as the heads of the families from whom the earth would be repopulated. God’s words therefore addressed both Noah and the generations that would follow.

Gen 8:18 So Noah came out, along with his sons and his wife…

Gen 7:13 On that very day Noah entered the ark, along with his sons…
1Pe 3:20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently…

“Behold, I now establish My covenant with you

After the flood, “Behold” signals the importance of God’s direct communication as He formally binds Himself to Noah in a covenant that marks a renewed order for the world. God initiates and guarantees this promise, demonstrating His continuing purpose for humanity and creation despite human sin.

Gen 6:18 But I will establish My covenant with you,…
Gen 17:2 I will establish My covenant between Me and you…
Lev 26:9 I will turn toward you and make you fruitful…

and your descendants after you,

The covenant extends to Noah’s family and every generation descended from them. As Noah’s sons repopulate the earth, all mankind remains under the assurance of God’s faithfulness.

Gen 22:17-18 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply…
Gen 26:4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars…

and with every living creature that was with you—

God’s covenant after the flood includes the creatures preserved with Noah, showing that the restoration of the world concerns all life under humanity’s care.

Gen 6:19-20 And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark…
Gen 7:14-16 they and every kind of wild animal, livestock, …
Gen 7:8-9 The clean and unclean animals, the birds, and…

the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth—

The animals represent the full range of land and air creatures brought through the flood. Their preservation confirms God’s purpose for the created order to continue and multiply.

Gen 1:20-21 And God said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures,…
Gen 1:24-25 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures”…

Those leaving the ark entered a cleansed but still fallen world under God’s promise that He would preserve earthly life from another universal flood.

Gen 8:19 Every living creature, every creeping thing, and every bird—…
Gen 8:17 Bring out all the living creatures with you—birds…
Gen 8:16 Come out of the ark, you and your wife, along with your sons…

And I establish My covenant with you:

God formally confirmed His promise to Noah, his descendants, and every living creature after the flood. This covenant marked a new beginning for the human race and the restored world, showing that God would preserve creation while His purposes unfolded through history.

Gen 6:18 But I will establish My covenant with you,…
Gen 17:7 I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant…
Isa 54:10 Though the mountains may be removed and the hills…

Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood;

The flood had brought judgment on widespread human violence and corruption, yet God spared Noah’s family and the animals in the ark. He promised that no future flood would again destroy all living creatures in this way, establishing stability for life on earth.

Gen 8:21 When the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma,…
Gen 7:21-23 And every living thing that moved upon the earth…
2Pe 2:5 He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood…

never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

The repeated promise emphasizes its certainty. Though Scripture foretells a future judgment, the earth would not again be destroyed by a worldwide flood. God’s preservation of creation provided the setting for the growth of nations, the coming of the promised Messiah, and the final renewal of all things.

The everlasting covenant remains in force throughout human history. It rests on God’s word rather than human obedience and guarantees the stability of the world after the flood.

Noah’s Shame and Canaan’s Curse

The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

These three sons became the fathers of the nations that repopulated the earth after the flood. Their descendants spread into distinct peoples and lands, preserving the human family through whom God’s purposes would continue.

And Ham was the father of Canaan.

Canaan’s identification is significant because his descendants later occupied the land promised to Abraham’s offspring. It also prepares for Noah’s judgment against Canaan in the following account and the later conflict between Israel and the Canaanite peoples.

1Ch 1:8 The sons of Ham: Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
Gen 10:15-19 And Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn…

These three were the sons of Noah,

Shem, Ham, and Japheth became the fathers of the post-Flood human family. Through them, God preserved and renewed mankind after the judgment of the Flood, as Noah served as a new beginning for the human race. Genesis later records the nations that descended from each son.

Now Noah,

Now Noah, whose name means “rest” or “comfort,” preserved through the flood with his family, stands at the beginning of a renewed human society. His life after the flood continues God’s command for humanity to fill and cultivate the earth.

proceeded to plant a vineyard.

The vineyard provided a lasting source of food and drink and reflects the return of agriculture after the flood. Noah’s work also sets the stage for the events that follow, when wine becomes the occasion for sin and shame within his household.

Isa 5:1-2 I will sing for my beloved a song of his vineyard:…
Jer 31:5 Again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria;…
Deu 20:6 Has any man planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy…

But when he drank some of its wine,

Noah drank from the vineyard he had planted after the flood, returning to the ordinary work of cultivating the earth. The fruit of the vine was a good provision, yet its misuse brought shame rather than blessing.

Psa 61:4 Let me dwell in Your tent forever and take refuge…

And Ham, the father of Canaan,

Ham’s identification as Canaan’s father prepares for Noah’s later judgment against Canaan and the nation descended from him. The family line is central to the account, linking Ham’s dishonoring of Noah with consequences that would affect his descendants.

Noah lay exposed in his tent after becoming drunk. Ham looked upon his father’s shame instead of turning away or protecting his dignity, treating the matter with dishonor.

and walking backward,

They deliberately avoided looking upon Noah’s nakedness. Their careful approach stood in direct contrast to Ham, who had seen his father and reported it to his brothers.

they covered their father’s nakedness.

Shem and Japheth removed the immediate cause of Noah’s shame without making his condition a subject of ridicule. Their act restored privacy and honor to their father.

Lev 18:7 You must not expose the nakedness of your father…

Their faces were turned away

They took care not to participate in the dishonor of seeing Noah exposed. Their conduct reflected the obligation of sons to honor their father even when he had failed.

Exo 3:6 Then He said, “I am the God of your father,”…
Isa 6:2 Above Him stood seraphim, each having six wings:…

so that they did not see their father’s nakedness.

The repeated emphasis shows that their restraint was intentional. Shem and Japheth neither exploited nor publicized Noah’s weakness, but protected him from further shame.

When Noah awoke from his drunkenness

Noah’s fall revealed that even a righteous man remained vulnerable to sin and its consequences. After planting a vineyard, he drank excessively and lay uncovered in his tent, bringing shame into his household.

and learned what his youngest son had done to him,

Noah discovered Ham’s dishonoring conduct, which Ham had openly reported to his brothers rather than covering his father’s shame. Ham’s actions showed contempt for paternal authority and led Noah to pronounce judgment on Canaan, Ham’s son.

Pro 30:17 As for the eye that mocks a father and scorns obedience…
Deu 27:16 Cursed is he who dishonors his father or mother…

The judgment fell on Canaan, Ham’s son, and anticipated the later downfall of the Canaanite peoples who inhabited the land promised to Abraham’s descendants.

Deu 20:17 For you must devote them to complete destruction…

A servant of servants

Canaan’s descendants would occupy a deeply humbled position among surrounding nations, marked by conquest and subjection.

The descendants of Shem and Japheth would prevail over Canaan. Israel’s conquest of Canaan became a central fulfillment of Noah’s pronouncement.

Shem’s Blessing and Noah’s Death

He also declared:

Noah continued his solemn pronouncement after Ham’s dishonor of him. His words distinguish the future lines of his sons and reveal God’s purposes in their descendants.

Gen 49:1 Then Jacob called for his sons and said,…
Deu 33:1 This is the blessing that Moses pronounced…

“Blessed be the LORD,

God would be especially identified with Shem’s line, from which Abraham, Israel, and ultimately the Messiah would come.

Gen 17:7 I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant…
Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…

May Canaan be the servant of Shem.

Canaan’s descendants would face subjection to the descendants of Shem, particularly as Israel entered and possessed the land of Canaan.

Jos 9:23 Now therefore you are under a curse, and…
Jdg 1:28 When Israel became stronger, they pressed the Canaanites…
1Ki 9:20-21 As for all the people who remained of the Amorites…

May God expand the territory of Japheth;

Noah asked God to grant Japheth’s descendants growth and wide settlement. Japheth became the forefather of peoples who spread broadly across regions north and west of the Near East.

Deu 12:20 When the LORD your God expands your territory you may eat it…
Gen 28:14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth,…

may he dwell in the tents of Shem,

Japheth’s line would in some way share in the blessings associated with Shem, the line through which God’s covenant purposes would unfold. The descendants of Japheth would later receive the blessings of salvation made known through Israel and fulfilled in Christ.

Rom 11:17-18 Now if some branches have been broken off,…
Eph 2:19 Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners,…
Gal 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing…

and may Canaan be his servant.”

Canaan’s descendants would be brought into subjection to the descendants of Shem and Japheth. Israel’s later conquest of Canaan marked a significant fulfillment of Noah’s declaration.

Jos 16:10 But they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer…
Jdg 1:28 When Israel became stronger, they pressed the Canaanites…
1Ki 9:20-21 As for all the people who remained of the Amorites…

After the flood,

Noah’s survival marked the beginning of the post-flood world. God had judged widespread human violence and corruption while preserving Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark. From this remnant, the earth was repopulated under God’s covenant.

Gen 8:13-14 In Noah’s six hundred and first year, on the first day…
Gen 8:18-19 So Noah came out, along with his sons and his wife…
2Pe 2:5 He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood…

Noah lived

Noah remained a link between the world before the flood and the generations that followed it. His long life gave him time to see his descendants multiply and the renewed human family spread across the earth.

Gen 6:9 This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man…
Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,…
1Pe 3:20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently…

350 years.

Noah lived 950 years in all. His lifespan reflects the great longevity recorded among the early patriarchs and shows that he lived well into the generations descending from his sons.

Gen 7:6 Now Noah was 600 years old when the floodwaters came…
Gen 11:10-11 This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood…
Psa 90:10 The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty…

So Noah lived a total of 950 years,

Noah’s 950 years place him among the long-lived generations before the Flood. He survived the judgment, saw the earth repopulated through his sons, and lived long enough to witness the beginning of the post-Flood world under God’s covenant.

Gen 5:27 So Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.
Gen 11:32 Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.
Gen 25:7 Abraham lived a total of 175 years.

and then he died.

Though preserved through the Flood and counted righteous in his generation, Noah remained subject to death. His death closes the account of the man through whom God preserved human life and continues the line through Shem, from which the promised Redeemer would come.

Gen 5:5 So Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.
Gen 25:8 And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died,…
Gen 35:29 Then he breathed his last and died, and was gathered…
