1 Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ἐξῆλθεν δόγμα παρὰ Καίσαρος Αὐγούστου ἀπογράφεσθαι πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκουμένην In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.
2 αὕτη ἀπογραφὴ πρώτη ἐγένετο ἡγεμονεύοντος τῆς Συρίας Κυρηνίου This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)
3 καὶ ἐπορεύοντο πάντες ἀπογράφεσθαι ἕκαστος εἰς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ πόλιν And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 Ἀνέβη δὲ καὶ Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἐκ πόλεως Ναζαρὲθ εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν εἰς πόλιν Δαυὶδ ἥτις καλεῖται Βηθλεέμ διὰ τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν ἐξ οἴκου καὶ πατριᾶς Δαυίδ And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.
5 ἀπογράψασθαι σὺν Μαριὰμ τῇ ἐμνηστευμένῃ αὐτῷ οὔσῃ ἐγκύῳ to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

12 καὶ τοῦτο ὑμῖν ‹τὸ› σημεῖον εὑρήσετε βρέφος ἐσπαργανωμένον καὶ κείμενον ἐν φάτνῃ And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Καὶ ἐξαίφνης ἐγένετο σὺν τῷ ἀγγέλῳ πλῆθος στρατιᾶς οὐρανίου αἰνούντων τὸν Θεὸν καὶ λεγόντων And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

15 Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἀπῆλθον ἀπ’ αὐτῶν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν οἱ ἄγγελοι οἱ ποιμένες ἐλάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους Διέλθωμεν δὴ ἕως Βηθλεὲμ καὶ ἴδωμεν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο τὸ γεγονὸς ὃ ὁ Κύριος ἐγνώρισεν ἡμῖν When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 Καὶ ἦλθαν σπεύσαντες καὶ ἀνεῦραν τήν τε Μαριὰμ καὶ τὸν Ἰωσὴφ καὶ τὸ βρέφος κείμενον ἐν τῇ φάτνῃ And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.
17 ἰδόντες δὲ ἐγνώρισαν περὶ τοῦ ῥήματος τοῦ λαληθέντος αὐτοῖς περὶ τοῦ παιδίου τούτου And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,
18 καὶ πάντες οἱ ἀκούσαντες ἐθαύμασαν περὶ τῶν λαληθέντων ὑπὸ τῶν ποιμένων πρὸς αὐτούς And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

22 Καὶ ὅτε ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ αὐτῶν κατὰ τὸν νόμον Μωϋσέως ἀνήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παραστῆσαι τῷ Κυρίῳ And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord

24 καὶ τοῦ δοῦναι θυσίαν κατὰ τὸ εἰρημένον ἐν τῷ νόμῳ Κυρίου Ζεῦγος τρυγόνων ἢ δύο νοσσοὺς περιστερῶν and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”
25 Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος ἦν ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ᾧ ὄνομα Συμεών καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος καὶ εὐλαβής προσδεχόμενος παράκλησιν τοῦ Ἰσραήλ καὶ Πνεῦμα ἦν Ἅγιον ἐπ’ αὐτόν Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.
26 καὶ ἦν αὐτῷ κεχρηματισμένον ὑπὸ τοῦ Πνεύματος τοῦ Ἁγίου μὴ ἰδεῖν θάνατον πρὶν ἢ ἂν ἴδῃ τὸν Χριστὸν Κυρίου And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.
27 καὶ ἦλθεν ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι εἰς τὸ ἱερόν καὶ ἐν τῷ εἰσαγαγεῖν τοὺς γονεῖς τὸ παιδίον Ἰησοῦν τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοὺς κατὰ τὸ εἰθισμένον τοῦ νόμου περὶ αὐτοῦ And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. 28 καὶ αὐτὸς ἐδέξατο αὐτὸ εἰς τὰς ἀγκάλας καὶ εὐλόγησεν τὸν Θεὸν καὶ εἶπεν he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 Νῦν ἀπολύεις τὸν δοῦλόν σου Δέσποτα κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου ἐν εἰρήνῃ “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace.
30 ὅτι εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου τὸ σωτήριόν σου for my eyes have seen your salvation For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31 ὃ ἡτοίμασας κατὰ πρόσωπον πάντων τῶν λαῶν that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 φῶς εἰς ἀποκάλυψιν ἐθνῶν καὶ δόξαν λαοῦ σου Ἰσραήλ a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”
33 Καὶ ἦν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ θαυμάζοντες ἐπὶ τοῖς λαλουμένοις περὶ αὐτοῦ And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him.

36 Καὶ ἦν Ἅννα προφῆτις θυγάτηρ Φανουήλ ἐκ φυλῆς Ἀσήρ αὕτη προβεβηκυῖα ἐν ἡμέραις πολλαῖς ζήσασα μετὰ ἀνδρὸς ἔτη ἑπτὰ ἀπὸ τῆς παρθενίας αὐτῆς And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,
37 καὶ αὐτὴ χήρα ἕως ἐτῶν ὀγδοήκοντα τεσσάρων ἣ οὐκ ἀφίστατο τοῦ ἱεροῦ νηστείαις καὶ δεήσεσιν λατρεύουσα νύκτα καὶ ἡμέραν and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. 38 καὶ αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐπιστᾶσα ἀνθωμολογεῖτο τῷ Θεῷ καὶ ἐλάλει περὶ αὐτοῦ πᾶσιν τοῖς προσδεχομένοις λύτρωσιν Ἰερουσαλήμ And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
39 Καὶ ὡς ἐτέλεσαν πάντα τὰ κατὰ τὸν νόμον Κυρίου ἐπέστρεψαν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν εἰς πόλιν ἑαυτῶν Ναζαρέθ And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.
40 Τὸ δὲ παιδίον ηὔξανεν καὶ ἐκραταιοῦτο πληρούμενον σοφίᾳ καὶ χάρις Θεοῦ ἦν ἐπ’ αὐτό And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.
41 Καὶ ἐπορεύοντο οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ κατ’ ἔτος εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ τῇ ἑορτῇ τοῦ πάσχα Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.
42 Καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ἐτῶν δώδεκα ἀναβαινόντων αὐτῶν κατὰ τὸ ἔθος τῆς ἑορτῆς And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.
43 καὶ τελειωσάντων τὰς ἡμέρας ἐν τῷ ὑποστρέφειν αὐτοὺς ὑπέμεινεν Ἰησοῦς ὁ παῖς ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.
44 νομίσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν εἶναι ἐν τῇ συνοδίᾳ ἦλθον ἡμέρας ὁδὸν καὶ ἀνεζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς συγγενεῦσιν καὶ τοῖς γνωστοῖς but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.
45 καὶ μὴ εὑρόντες ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἀναζητοῦντες αὐτόν and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.
46 Καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ ἡμέρας τρεῖς εὗρον αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καθεζόμενον ἐν μέσῳ τῶν διδασκάλων καὶ ἀκούοντα αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπερωτῶντα αὐτούς After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τί ὅτι ἐζητεῖτέ με οὐκ ᾔδειτε ὅτι ἐν τοῖς τοῦ Πατρός μου δεῖ εἶναί με And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”
50 καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐ συνῆκαν τὸ ῥῆμα ὃ ἐλάλησεν αὐτοῖς And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
51 Καὶ κατέβη μετ’ αὐτῶν καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Ναζαρὲθ καὶ ἦν ὑποτασσόμενος αὐτοῖς καὶ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ διετήρει πάντα τὰ ῥήματα ‹ταῦτα› ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτῆς And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.
52 Καὶ Ἰησοῦς προέκοπτεν ἐν τῇ σοφίᾳ καὶ ἡλικίᾳ καὶ χάριτι παρὰ Θεῷ καὶ ἀνθρώποις And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
