Exodus 6
Berean Study Bible

God Promises Deliverance

But the LORD said to Moses,

God answered Moses after his distress over Pharaoh’s increased oppression of Israel. Moses remained the appointed mediator through whom the Lord revealed His purpose and directed Israel’s deliverance.

Exo 3:4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look,…
Exo 3:10 Therefore, go! I am sending you to Pharaoh…
Exo 4:12 “Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach”…

“Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh,

Pharaoh had hardened himself against God’s command, but his resistance would not delay the Lord’s plan. The judgments about to fall on Egypt would reveal God’s authority over its king and gods.

Exo 7:4-5 Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will…
Exo 9:13-16 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning…
Exo 11:9-10 The LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you…

for because of My mighty hand he will let the people go;

Israel’s release would come by God’s power, not by negotiation or Pharaoh’s goodwill. The Lord would act decisively to fulfill His covenant promise to bring His people out of Egypt.

Exo 3:19-20 But I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go…
Deu 4:34 Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation……
Psa 136:11-12 and brought Israel out from among them…

because of My strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”

Pharaoh would eventually urge Israel to leave after the devastating judgments upon Egypt. What he had refused to grant freely, he would be compelled to do under the force of God’s judgment.

Exo 11:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will bring upon Pharaoh…”…
Exo 12:31-33 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron by night and said……
Exo 12:39 Since their dough had no leaven, the people…

God also told Moses,

After Moses’ discouragement over Pharaoh’s increased oppression, God continued to speak with him, strengthening his commission to lead Israel out of Egypt.

Num 12:6-8 He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you…
Exo 33:11 Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, …
Deu 34:10 Since that time, no prophet has risen in Israel…

“I am the LORD.

God identified Himself as the covenant-keeping God who had bound Himself to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. His authority over Pharaoh and Egypt guaranteed that He would fulfill His promise to deliver Israel.

Exo 3:14-15 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are”…
Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me…
Isa 42:8 I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory…

I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob

God personally revealed Himself to Israel’s patriarchs and confirmed His covenant promises to them. Through these encounters, He pledged descendants, land, and blessing, laying the foundation for the nation that would come through their families.

Gen 12:7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said,…
Gen 26:24 and that night the LORD appeared to him…
Gen 35:9-13 After Jacob had returned from Paddan-aram…

as God Almighty,

He showed His sovereign power and His ability to preserve the covenant line despite barrenness, famine, danger, and human weakness.

Gen 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared…
Gen 35:11 And God told him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful…
Gen 48:3 Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me…

but by My name the LORD

Israel was now to know God through His decisive acts of covenant faithfulness, especially in their deliverance from Egypt.

Exo 3:14-15 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are”…
Exo 34:5-7 And the LORD descended in a cloud, stood with him there…
Isa 42:8 I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory…

I did not make Myself known to them.

The patriarchs received God’s promises, but Moses and Israel would witness their fulfillment on a national scale as the LORD redeemed them and established His covenant with them.

Jhn 17:26 And I have made Your name known to them,…
Jhn 17:6 I have revealed Your name to those You have given Me…
Gen 32:29 And Jacob requested, “Please tell me your name.”…

I also established My covenant with them

God confirmed His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, binding Himself to give their descendants a lasting inheritance. Though the patriarchs did not receive the full promise during their lifetimes, God’s commitment remained certain and passed from one generation to the next.

Gen 17:7 I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant…
Gen 15:18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram…
Exo 2:24 So God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant…

to give them the land of Canaan,

Canaan was the specific land God appointed for Israel, not merely a general place of blessing. Its future possession would demonstrate God’s faithfulness to the promises made to the patriarchs and establish Israel as a nation in the land He had chosen.

Gen 17:8 And to you and your descendants I will give the land…
Gen 15:7 The LORD also told him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out…
Gen 12:7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said,…

the land where they lived as foreigners.

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob lived in Canaan as resident aliens, owning little land and depending on God’s promise for what was yet to come. Their temporary status anticipated Israel’s later bondage in Egypt and the Lord’s deliverance of their descendants into the land.

Gen 28:4 And may He give the blessing of Abraham…
Heb 11:9 By faith he dwelt in the promised land as a stranger…
Gen 23:4 I am a foreigner and an outsider among you.…

Furthermore, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites,

God was fully aware of Israel’s anguish under Egypt’s oppression. Their cries arose from generations of forced labor, suffering, and longing for deliverance. Their distress had reached the appointed time for God to act.

Exo 2:23-25 After a long time, the king of Egypt died.…
Psa 102:19-20 For He looked down from the heights of His sanctuary;…
Psa 34:17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears;…

whom the Egyptians are enslaving,

Pharaoh’s government had reduced Israel to harsh bondage in an effort to curb their growing population and strength. What began as Israel’s settlement in Egypt during Joseph’s lifetime had become a system of cruel exploitation under a later dynasty that did not honor Joseph’s memory.

Exo 1:13-14 They worked the Israelites ruthlessly…
Exo 5:6-9 That same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters…
Deu 26:6 But the Egyptians mistreated us and afflicted us…

and I have remembered My covenant.

God’s remembrance signals the beginning of His promised intervention. He was acting in faithfulness to the covenant made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: to give their descendants the land of Canaan and make them a great nation. Israel’s rescue from Egypt would demonstrate that God had not abandoned His promises.

Lev 26:42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob…
Psa 105:8-10 He remembers His covenant forever, the word…
Luk 1:72-73 to show mercy to our fathers and to remember…

Therefore tell the Israelites:

Moses is to announce God’s purpose to His people, who are suffering under Pharaoh’s forced labor. Their deliverance will fulfill the covenant God made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Exo 19:3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him…
Exo 3:16 Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them,…
Exo 4:29 Then Moses and Aaron went and assembled all the elders…

‘I am the LORD,

Yahweh identifies Himself as the faithful God who remains unchanged and keeps His promises.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Lev 19:2 Speak to the whole congregation of Israel and tell them:…
Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me…

and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians

Egypt’s rule had become a crushing burden, but God would remove Israel from Pharaoh’s control and lead them out of the land.

Exo 5:1 After that, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said…
Jer 30:8 On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts,…
Ezk 34:27 The trees of the field will give their fruit,…

and deliver you from their bondage.

Israel would no longer serve Egypt as slaves. Their rescue would become the defining act of God’s faithfulness in their national history.

Exo 13:3 So Moses told the people, “Remember this day,…
Jer 34:13 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
Psa 81:6 “I relieved his shoulder of the burden;…”…

I will redeem you with an outstretched arm

God Himself would act with power to claim Israel as His own, defeating the authority that held them captive. The deliverance anticipates the greater redemption accomplished through Christ.

Deu 7:8 But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath…
Deu 5:15 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt…
Deu 26:8 Then the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand…

and with mighty acts of judgment.

The plagues would judge Pharaoh, Egypt, and its gods, showing that the LORD alone rules over every nation and power.

Exo 7:4 Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will…
Exo 12:12 On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt…
Num 33:4 who were burying all their firstborn, whom the LORD…

I will take you as My own people,

God would establish Israel as His covenant nation, fulfilling His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Their deliverance from slavery marked the beginning of their identity as a people set apart for His purposes.

Lev 26:12 I will walk among you and be your God,…
Jer 24:7 I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD.…
Hos 2:23 And I will sow her as My own in the land…

and I will be your God.

The Lord pledged His presence, protection, and rule over Israel. Their covenant relationship required Israel to live under His authority as the God who had redeemed them.

Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…
Ezk 36:28 Then you will live in the land that I gave your forefathers;…
2Co 6:16 What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols…

Then you will know that I am the LORD your God,

Through the plagues, the Exodus, and His continued provision, Israel would come to know the LORD personally as the faithful and powerful God who acts for His people.

Deu 29:6 You ate no bread and drank no wine or strong drink…
Ezk 20:20 Keep My Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign…
Exo 29:46 And they will know that I am the LORD their God,…

who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.

Egypt’s oppression would be broken by God’s direct intervention. The Exodus became the defining act of Israel’s national history, demonstrating that their freedom came from the LORD rather than human strength.

Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 7:8 But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath…

And I will bring you into the land

God promised to deliver Israel from Egypt and lead them into Canaan, the land He had appointed for their descendants. Their rescue from slavery was not an end in itself but the beginning of their return to the inheritance promised to the patriarchs.

Exo 3:8 I have come down to rescue them from the hand of Egyptians…
Deu 6:23 But He brought us out from there to lead us in…
Jos 1:6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall give…

that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The land promise had been confirmed to each of Israel’s fathers, binding the nation’s future to God’s covenant with them. Israel’s identity and hope rested on the Lord’s faithfulness to fulfill what He had pledged generations earlier.

Gen 50:24 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die,…
Deu 1:8 See, I have placed the land before you. Enter and possess…
Deu 34:4 And the LORD said to him, “This is the land…

I will give it to you as a possession.

Israel would receive Canaan as a lasting national inheritance rather than remain enslaved foreigners in Egypt. The promise anticipated their entry into the land and its settlement under Joshua.

Num 33:53 You are to take possession of the land and settle in it…
Deu 32:49 Go up into the Abarim Range to Mount Nebo…
Gen 17:8 And to you and your descendants I will give the land…

I am the LORD!’”

The Lord’s own name, Yahweh, the eternal and unchanging covenant-keeping God, guaranteed the certainty of His covenant promises. The God who revealed Himself to Moses would act decisively to redeem His people and give them the inheritance He had sworn to provide.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Lev 11:44 For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves…

Moses relayed this message to the Israelites,

God appointed Moses to speak His words to Israel and lead them out of Egypt. Through him, the Lord renewed the promise of deliverance made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Exo 4:29-31 Then Moses and Aaron went and assembled all the elders…
Deu 1:3-5 In the fortieth year, Moses proclaimed to the Israelites…
Deu 31:1 When Moses had finished speaking these words to all Israel,

but on account of their broken spirit

Years of slavery had left the Israelites discouraged and without hope. Their suffering made it difficult for them to believe that rescue was near.

Psa 34:18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite…
Pro 15:13 A joyful heart makes a cheerful countenance,…
Pro 18:14 The spirit of a man can endure his sickness…

and cruel bondage,

Pharaoh’s oppression was severe, involving relentless forced labor and harsh treatment. Israel’s condition showed the depth of their need for God’s direct intervention.

Exo 1:13-14 They worked the Israelites ruthlessly…
Exo 3:7-8 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the affliction…
Deu 26:6 But the Egyptians mistreated us and afflicted us…

they did not listen to him.

Their despair prevented them from receiving Moses’ report with faith. Though they would repeatedly struggle to trust God’s promises, the Lord remained committed to bringing them out of Egypt.

Psa 81:11-13 But My people would not listen to Me, and Israel would not…
Jer 7:13 And now, because you have done all these things,…
Pro 1:24-25 Because you refused my call, and no one took…

So the LORD said to Moses,

God continued to direct Moses as Israel remained crushed by slavery and discouraged by Pharaoh’s increased demands. Moses, though reluctant and conscious of his own weakness, was the appointed leader through whom God would confront Pharaoh and bring Israel out of Egypt. The command that follows advances God’s covenant purpose to deliver His people and demonstrate His authority over Egypt.

Exo 3:4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look,…
Exo 4:12 “Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach”…
Num 12:8 I speak with him face to face, clearly and not in riddles;…

“Go and tell Pharaoh king of Egypt

God sends Moses before Egypt’s ruler with His own authority. Though Pharaoh was regarded as divine in Egyptian society, he stood under the command of the true God. Moses serves as God’s appointed spokesman in the conflict that will reveal the Lord’s supremacy over Egypt and its gods.

Exo 7:2 You are to speak all that I command you,…
Exo 3:18 The elders of Israel will listen to what you say,…
Exo 9:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and tell him…”…

to let the Israelites go

Israel’s release fulfills God’s covenant purpose for the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Their deliverance from slavery becomes the defining act of redemption in Israel’s history and points forward to Christ’s deliverance of His people from sin.

Exo 5:1 After that, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said…
Exo 7:16 Then say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews,…
Exo 8:20 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning…

out of his land.”

God requires a complete departure from the place of Israel’s oppression and idolatrous surroundings. Egypt’s wealth and power cannot overturn God’s promise to bring His people into the land He pledged to their fathers.

Exo 12:33 And in order to send them out of the land quickly,…
Exo 12:41 At the end of the 430 years, to the very day…
Exo 7:4 Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will…

But in the LORD’s presence

Moses speaks before the God who has called him to confront Egypt and lead Israel out of bondage. The setting emphasizes the authority behind Moses’ mission and the seriousness of his exchange with the LORD.

Num 12:6-8 He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you…
Exo 33:11 Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, …
Deu 5:24-27 “Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory”…

Moses replied,

Moses again voices his sense of inadequacy. Though God has revealed His power and given clear commands, Moses remains troubled by his own limitations.

Exo 32:11-13 But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God, saying,…
Num 14:13-19 But Moses said to the LORD, “The Egyptians will hear of it,…
Deu 9:18-20 Then I fell down before the LORD for forty days…

“If the Israelites will not listen to me,

Israel had already resisted Moses’ message because their harsh slavery had crushed their hope. Their unbelief did not change God’s purpose, but it deepened Moses’ discouragement.

Exo 4:1 Then Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me”…
Ezk 3:7 But the house of Israel will be unwilling to listen to you,…
Deu 18:18-19 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…

then why would Pharaoh listen to me,

Pharaoh held absolute power in Egypt and had no reason, in Moses’ natural judgment, to yield to a Hebrew spokesman. Moses could not see how his words would move a ruler determined to keep Israel enslaved.

Exo 7:4 Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will…
Exo 5:2 But Pharaoh replied, “Who is the LORD that I should…
Exo 9:12 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not…

since I am unskilled in speech?”

Moses returns to the weakness he had raised at the burning bush. God’s plan did not depend on Moses’ natural eloquence, but on God’s authority and power working through the servant He had chosen.

Exo 4:10 “Please, Lord,” Moses replied, “I have never been eloquent”…
Exo 4:12 “Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach”…
2Co 11:6 Although I am not a polished speaker, I am not lacking……

Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron

God addressed the two brothers He had appointed to lead Israel. Moses served as God’s spokesman, while Aaron assisted him before the people and Pharaoh.

Exo 12:1 Now the LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,
Exo 7:8 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
Num 12:4 And suddenly the LORD said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam,…

and gave them a charge

God entrusted them with a binding command and responsibility. Their mission rested on His authority rather than their own strength.

Exo 7:1-2 The LORD answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God…
Exo 4:15-16 You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth.…
Exo 12:28 And the Israelites went and did just what the LORD commanded…

concerning both the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt,

Moses and Aaron were to deal with Israel’s discouragement and with Pharaoh’s resistance. God’s purpose involved both calling His people to follow Him and confronting the ruler who held them in slavery.

Exo 5:1 After that, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said…
Exo 7:16 Then say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews,…
Exo 3:19-20 But I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go…

to bring the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.

Israel’s departure from Egypt would fulfill God’s covenant promise to their ancestors. The exodus displayed His power over Egypt and marked the beginning of Israel’s life as a redeemed nation.

Exo 12:51 And on that very day the LORD brought the Israelites out…
Deu 4:20 Yet the LORD has taken you and brought you out…
Deu 26:8 Then the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand…

The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

Kohath, a son of Levi and grandson of Jacob, became the ancestor of one of Israel’s principal Levitical clans. His descendants were assigned important responsibilities in the care and transport of the tabernacle’s sacred furnishings. Amram later became the father of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, linking Kohath’s family directly to Israel’s deliverance from Egypt and the establishment of the priesthood. The families of Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel also remained part of the Levitical order and served in Israel’s worship and communal life.

The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi.

Merari, Levi’s third son, was the ancestor of a Levitical division entrusted with the tabernacle’s structural furnishings. His descendants carried and maintained the frames, bars, pillars, and bases during Israel’s wilderness journey. Mahli and Mushi became the heads of Merarite family lines, serving within the ordered worship God established for Israel.

And Amram married his father’s sister Jochebed,

Amram’s marriage to Jochebed, his aunt, took place before such unions were forbidden under Israel’s later law. The family remained closely connected during Israel’s years in Egypt. Jochebed, whose name means “Yahweh is glory,” became the mother of the household through which God raised up Israel’s leading deliverer and first high priest.
