Offerings for the Temple

Then King David said to the whole assembly,

Near the end of his reign, David addressed Israel’s leaders, commanders, officials, and representatives publicly, preparing the nation for an orderly transition to Solomon’s rule and for the work ahead.

Deu 31:30 Then Moses recited aloud to the whole assembly of Israel…
Neh 8:1 At that time all the people gathered together in the square…

“My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen,

Solomon had been appointed by God to succeed David and to build the temple. His selection confirmed the Lord’s covenant purpose for David’s house and established the legitimacy of his coming reign.

is young and inexperienced.

Solomon lacked the maturity and experience needed for such a demanding responsibility. David’s words acknowledge that the king would need God’s wisdom, strength, and faithful support from the nation.

Jer 1:6 “Ah, Lord GOD,” I said, “I surely do not know how to speak,…

The task is great

Building the temple required immense resources, skilled labor, national cooperation, and careful obedience to the plans David had received. Its importance extended beyond its size because it would become Israel’s central place of worship.

because this palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.

Though called a palace, the temple was not a royal residence for any human ruler. It was the house prepared for the worship of the Lord, representing His dwelling among His covenant people and requiring reverence in every part of its construction and service.

Now with all my ability I have made provision for the house of my God—

David had devoted substantial personal effort and royal resources to preparing for the temple Solomon would build. Though God did not permit David to construct it, he accepted that decision and worked to ensure that his son would inherit everything needed for the task.

David’s Prayer of Blessing

Then David blessed the LORD in the sight of all the assembly

As Israel gathered to prepare for the Temple’s construction, David led the nation in public worship. Though he would not build the Temple, he directed the people’s attention to the God for whom it was being prepared. His leadership joined the whole assembly in acknowledging that the kingdom, its resources, and its future belonged to the LORD.

1Ki 8:14 And as the whole assembly of Israel stood there,…
Neh 8:6 Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God…
Psa 22:22 I will proclaim Your name to my brothers;…

and said: “May You be blessed, O LORD,

David praised the covenant God of Israel, recognizing Him as the source of every blessing and the rightful object of Israel’s worship. The nation’s offerings and achievements were not grounds for human pride but occasions to honor God.

Psa 72:18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, …
Psa 41:13 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel…

God of our father Israel,

David identified the LORD with the God who called Jacob and established Israel as His people. Israel’s present worship rested on God’s continuing faithfulness to the promises made to their fathers.

God’s rule did not begin with David’s kingdom or depend on Israel’s strength. He is eternal, sovereign over every generation, and faithful to all He has promised.

Psa 106:48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…

Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty,

David publicly ascribes every mark of greatness and honor to the LORD alone. As Israel’s king gathered resources for the temple, he recognized that neither royal authority, military strength, national prosperity, nor the beauty of worship originated with human effort. All power and glory belong to God, whose majesty exceeds that of every earthly ruler.

The LORD is Creator and rightful owner of all that exists. Israel’s wealth, land, people, and future were not possessions to be claimed independently of Him. David’s prayer places the temple project within this larger reality: the materials offered for God’s house had first come from God’s hand.

Psa 145:13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion…
Psa 22:28 For dominion belongs to the LORD, and He rules…

and You are exalted as head over all.

God stands above every king, nation, angelic power, and created thing. David’s reign, like all human authority, existed under God’s sovereign government. The prayer directs Israel’s attention away from David and toward the LORD as the supreme ruler over heaven and earth.

Col 2:10 And you have been made complete in Christ…
Psa 97:9 For You, O LORD, are Most High over all the earth;…

Both riches and honor come from You,

David publicly recognizes that wealth, position, and reputation are gifts under God’s control. As Israel prepared for Solomon’s reign and the building of the temple, the nation’s resources and David’s own kingship were traced back to God rather than human achievement.

2Ch 1:11-12 God said to Solomon, “Since this was in your heart…
Pro 8:18 With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth…
Pro 22:4 The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD…

and You are the ruler over all.

God’s authority extends beyond Israel to every nation, king, and circumstance. David, though Israel’s king, confesses that his throne stands beneath the greater rule of the Lord.

Psa 103:19 The LORD has established His throne in heaven…
Psa 47:7 For God is King of all the earth; sing to Him…
Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—…

Deu 32:39 See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me…

to exalt and give strength to all.

God raises individuals to places of leadership and honor and supplies the strength, including spiritual fortitude, needed for their appointed work. David’s own rise from shepherd to king and Solomon’s coming role testify that advancement and ability come according to God’s will.

1Sa 2:7-8 The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts.…
Psa 113:7-8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy…
Isa 40:29 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength…

Now therefore, our God,

David addresses the Lord as the God of Israel, affirming the covenant bond between God and His people. Though the kingdom had gained wealth and strength, Israel’s identity and security rested on the Lord alone.

Dan 9:15 Now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out…

we give You thanks,

The offerings gathered for the temple came from God’s provision, not merely from human effort or royal resources. David leads the assembly in acknowledging that every ability, possession, and blessing ultimately belongs to Him.

Psa 79:13 Then we Your people, the sheep of Your pasture…
Psa 100:4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise…

Israel honors God for His majesty and faithfulness as preparations are made for the temple Solomon will build. The glory belongs to the Lord whose presence would dwell among His people and whose name would be associated with the temple in Jerusalem.

Psa 50:10-12 for every beast of the forest is Mine—the cattle…
Deu 8:18 But remember that it is the LORD your God…

For we are foreigners and strangers in Your presence,

David acknowledges that Israel possesses no independent claim before God. Though the nation had received the land by covenant, every generation remained dependent on the Lord who gave it. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob likewise lived by God’s promise while awaiting its fuller fulfillment.

Psa 39:12 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help;…
Lev 25:23 The land must not be sold permanently, because it is Mine…
Gen 23:4 I am a foreigner and an outsider among you.…

Israel’s history testified that God’s people were sustained by His faithfulness rather than permanent security in earthly circumstances. Their identity and future rested in the covenant God had preserved from generation to generation.

Our days on earth are like a shadow,

David contrasts God’s enduring kingdom with the short span of human life. Even the wealth, power, and peace present during his reign could not alter the passing nature of earthly life.

No lasting hope can be found in human strength, possessions, or achievements—not as despair, but as recognition of the futility of placing hope in earthly things. David’s prayer directs Israel’s confidence toward the Lord, whose purposes and promises endure when human life has passed.

David recognizes that the Lord sees beyond outward actions to the motives, desires, and loyalties within a person. God’s approval rests not merely on the gifts brought for the temple, but on the integrity of those who give them.

Israel’s leaders and people joined David in supplying materials for the temple. Their united and joyful giving showed a shared commitment to the Lord’s house and reflected the nation’s willingness to support the work God had appointed for Solomon.

O LORD, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,

David appeals to the God who made and kept His covenant promises to Israel’s patriarchs. Naming Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob recalls the nation’s divinely given heritage and affirms that the God worshiped in Jerusalem is the same Lord who established Israel and preserved His people through every generation.

Israel needed more than a moment of enthusiasm; they needed hearts continually turned toward the Lord. David recognizes that lasting faithfulness depends on God’s gracious work within His people, guiding their desires and loyalties toward His will.

Israel’s security and prosperity depended on faithful obedience to God’s revealed law. David understood that Solomon’s reign and the enduring promise to David’s house were tied to his willingness to govern under God’s authority.

Deu 10:12-13 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…
Jos 22:5 But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law…

and to build Your palace

Solomon was appointed to build the temple in Jerusalem, the permanent house for the worship of the Lord among His people. David had gathered the materials and made extensive preparations, though God had assigned the construction itself to Solomon.

1Ch 22:5 And David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced,…
1Ki 5:5 So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD…
2Sa 7:13 He will build a house for My Name, and I will…

for which I have made provision.”

David’s preparations provided Solomon with resources, plans, leaders, and a clear charge to complete the work. The temple would stand as the center of Israel’s worship and a testimony that the Lord dwelt among His covenant people.

1Ch 22:14-16 Now behold, I have taken great pains to provide…
1Ch 28:11-19 Then David gave his son Solomon the plans…
2Ch 2:7-9 Send me, therefore, a craftsman skilled in engraving…

Then David said to the whole assembly,

Near the close of his reign, David gathered Israel’s leaders, elders, and tribal representatives to witness the transfer of responsibility to Solomon. The assembly’s presence affirmed the unity of the nation and the public nature of Solomon’s appointment.

1Ch 13:2 And he said to the whole assembly of Israel,…
1Ch 28:2 It was in my heart to build a house as a resting place…

“Bless the LORD your God.”

David directed the people’s attention to the Lord, the covenant God who had established and preserved Israel. Their gratitude and worship recognized that the kingdom, the temple preparations, and the nation’s future depended on God’s faithfulness.

Deu 8:10 When you eat and are satisfied, bless the LORD your God…
Neh 9:5 Then the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah…

So the whole assembly blessed the LORD,

Israel responded together in worship, demonstrating national agreement at a pivotal moment in its history.

2Ch 20:26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah…
1Ch 16:36 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…

the God of their fathers.

The Lord was the same God who had called Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and had kept His promises throughout Israel’s generations.

2Ch 20:6 O LORD, God of our fathers, are You not the God who is…
Ezr 7:27 Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers,…
Exo 3:15 God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites,…

They bowed down and paid homage to the LORD and to the king.

Their bowing expressed reverence toward the Lord and submission to David as His appointed ruler. By honoring the king without confusing him with God, the people acknowledged the order God had established for Israel’s government.

Psa 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel…
2Ch 7:3 When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down…
1Ki 1:31 Bathsheba bowed facedown in homage to the king…

Solomon Anointed King

The next day they offered sacrifices

Israel’s leaders and people responded to David’s final public assembly and Solomon’s anointing with national worship. Their sacrifices marked thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness to David and confidence in His continued care over the kingdom.

Exo 32:6 So the next day they arose, offered burnt offerings…
1Sa 11:15 So all the people went to Gilgal and confirmed Saul…
2Ch 30:23-24 The whole assembly agreed to observe seven more days,…

and presented burnt offerings to the LORD:

Burnt offerings were wholly given to God, expressing the nation’s devotion and acknowledgment that its king and future rested under the LORD’s authority.

Lev 1:3-9 If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd,…
Num 28:3-8 And tell them that this is the food offering…
2Sa 24:25 And there he built an altar to the LORD and…

a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs,

The scale of the offerings reflected the importance of Solomon’s accession and the unity, wealth, and peace God had granted Israel during David’s reign.

Ezr 8:35 Then the exiles who had returned from captivity…
2Ch 7:5 And King Solomon offered a sacrifice of 22,000 oxen…
Num 7:17-88 a peace offering of two oxen, five rams, five male goats,…

and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.

Additional offerings, likely including peace offerings, enabled the people to share in a great covenant celebration. The entire nation participated, affirming Solomon as David’s successor and worshiping the LORD together.

1Ki 8:63-64 And Solomon offered as peace offerings to the LORD…
2Ch 5:6 There, before the ark, King Solomon and the whole…
Ezr 6:17 For the dedication of the house of God they offered…

That day they ate and drank with great joy in the presence of the LORD.

Israel’s leaders and people celebrated God’s faithfulness to David and His provision for the nation. The meal marked a sacred public occasion, expressing unity, thanksgiving, and submission to the LORD.

Deu 12:7 There, in the presence of the LORD your God,…
1Ki 8:66 On the fifteenth day Solomon sent the people away.…
Neh 8:12 Then all the people began to eat and drink,…

Then, for a second time, they designated David’s son Solomon as king,

Solomon’s earlier appointment was publicly confirmed before the assembled nation. This removed uncertainty over the succession and established David’s chosen heir as king according to God’s purpose for David’s house.

1Ki 1:43-45 “Not at all,” Jonathan replied. “Our lord King David…”…
1Ki 1:39-40 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle.…
1Ki 2:12 So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David,…

anointing him before the LORD as ruler,

The anointing set Solomon apart for royal service under God’s authority, foreshadowing Christ, the “Anointed One.” His rule was not merely a political transfer of power but a divinely sanctioned responsibility to govern Israel.

1Ki 1:34 There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet…
2Sa 5:3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron…
1Sa 16:13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him…

and Zadok as the priest.

Zadok’s appointment secured faithful priestly leadership alongside Solomon’s reign. Having remained loyal to David, he would serve as high priest during the establishment of Solomon’s kingdom and the building of the temple.

1Ki 2:35 And the king appointed Benaiah son of Jehoiada…
1Ki 1:8 But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada,…
2Sa 8:17 Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar…

So Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD

Israel’s king ruled under God’s authority, not as an independent sovereign. Solomon’s accession showed the LORD’s approval of David’s chosen successor and affirmed that Israel’s monarchy was accountable to God’s covenant and law.

1Ch 28:5 And of all my sons—for the LORD has given me many sons—…
1Ki 2:12 So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David,…
1Ki 1:46 Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne.

as king in place of his father David.

The peaceful transfer of rule preserved the Davidic dynasty and fulfilled God’s promise that David’s house would continue. Solomon inherited both the kingdom and the responsibility to lead God’s people faithfully.

1Ki 1:35 Then you shall go up with him, and he is to come…
1Ki 1:30 I will carry out this very day exactly what I swore to you…
1Ki 1:48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel! Today…

He prospered,

1Ki 2:46 Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada,…
2Ch 9:22 So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth…

in the sight of all Israel
