Jeremiah 38

Jeremiah Cast into the Cistern

Now Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchijah

These men were prominent officials under King Zedekiah during Jerusalem’s final siege. Their family names identify them as members of the governing class, with influence in the royal court and likely connections to priestly or noble families. They opposed Jeremiah because his warnings of Babylonian victory undermined the resistance they sought to maintain.

Jer 37:3 Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah…
Jer 21:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…
Jer 26:8-11 and as soon as he had finished telling all the people…

heard that Jeremiah had been telling all the people:

Jeremiah openly proclaimed that Judah could not escape God’s judgment through political defiance. He called the people to submit to Babylon as God’s appointed instrument of discipline, a message the officials regarded as harmful to public morale and disloyal to the city. Their reaction reveals the growing conflict between Jeremiah’s obedience to God and the leaders’ determination to preserve Jerusalem by military resistance.

Jer 36:10-16 From the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe,…
Jer 26:2-6 This is what the LORD says: Stand in the courtyard…
Jer 7:2-3 “Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD and proclaim…

“This is what the LORD says:

Jeremiah speaks with the authority of God, not as a political adviser offering personal opinion. During Jerusalem’s final crisis, the Lord made His will known through the prophet despite the opposition of the city’s leaders.

Jer 21:4 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
Ezk 2:4 They are obstinate and stubborn children.…
1Ki 22:14 As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak…

Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague,

Babylon’s siege had brought Jerusalem to the point of collapse. Military violence, starvation, and disease would follow as supplies failed and the city remained surrounded. Continued resistance would not preserve Judah but bring the judgment God had announced.

Jer 27:13 Why should you and your people die by sword and famine…
Jer 14:12 Although they may fast, I will not listen to their cry;…
Ezk 5:12 A third of your people will die by plague…

but whoever surrenders to the Chaldeans will live;

The Chaldeans, another name for the Babylonians, were God’s instrument of judgment against Judah. Surrender was humiliating and appeared disloyal to the nation, yet obedience to God required accepting the outcome He had decreed.

Jer 21:9 Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine…
Jer 27:11 But the nation that will put its neck under the yoke…
2Ki 7:4 If we say, ‘Let us go into the city,’ we will die…

he will retain his life like a spoil of war,

Those who left the city would lose property, status, and security, but their lives would be preserved. In the devastation of war, survival would be the only reward.

Jer 45:5 But as for you, do you seek great things for yourself?…
Jer 39:18 Because you have trusted in Me, you will escape…

and he will live.

God offered mercy even while carrying out judgment. Those who trusted His word through Jeremiah would escape the destruction coming upon Jerusalem.

Ezk 18:21 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins…
Ezk 33:15 if he restores a pledge, makes restitution…
Pro 4:4 he taught me and said, “Let your heart lay hold of my words;…

This is what the LORD says:

Jeremiah speaks with God’s authority, announcing the Lord’s settled judgment upon Judah after years of rebellion and idolatry.

Jer 21:4 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
Jer 37:7 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says…

This city will surely be delivered into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon,

Jerusalem, then ruled by Zedekiah, was surrounded by Nebuchadnezzar’s forces. Its fall would come by God’s decree, not merely Babylonian strength.

Jer 21:10 For I have set My face against this city…
Jer 32:28 Therefore this is what the LORD says: Behold…
Jer 34:2 The LORD, the God of Israel, told Jeremiah to go…

and he will capture it.”

Nebuchadnezzar would take Jerusalem, bringing the city’s destruction, the burning of the temple, and the exile of many Judeans in 586 BC. The disaster confirmed the certainty of God’s judgment while preserving His purpose to restore His people in time.

Jer 37:8 Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city.…
Jer 39:2 And on the ninth day of the fourth month,…
2Ki 25:4 Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans…

Then the officials said to the king,

Judah’s leading princes appealed to King Zedekiah during Babylon’s siege of Jerusalem. They held considerable political influence and pressed the king to act against Jeremiah.

Dan 6:12-13 “Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days…
Dan 3:8-12 At this time some astrologers came forward…
Est 3:8-9 Then Haman informed King Xerxes, “There is a certain people…

“This man ought to die,

They treated Jeremiah’s God-given warning as treason. His repeated calls for surrender to Babylon conflicted with their determination to resist, even though Babylon’s victory had been declared as God’s judgment on Judah.

Jer 26:11 Then the priests and prophets said to the officials,…
Jhn 19:7 “We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that…
Mat 26:66 What do you think?” “He deserves to die,” they answered.

for he is discouraging the warriors who remain in this city,

The officials believed Jeremiah was weakening the resolve of the defenders. Yet he was not urging cowardice; he was declaring that resistance would bring greater loss, while submission to God’s discipline would preserve life.

Deu 20:8 Then the officers shall speak further to the army, saying,…
Jdg 7:3 Now, therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the men:…
2Sa 17:10 Then even the most valiant soldier will melt with fear,…

as well as all the people,

Jeremiah’s message reached both the soldiers and Jerusalem’s remaining inhabitants. In the desperate conditions of the siege, many wanted assurances of victory rather than a warning of judgment.

Num 13:31-32 But the men who had gone up with him replied,…
Num 14:1 Then the whole congregation lifted up their voices…
Deu 1:28 Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt,…

by speaking such words to them;

Jeremiah continued to speak openly despite opposition, imprisonment, and threats. He could not alter God’s message to satisfy the king’s court or the people.

Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
Jer 23:16-17 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…
2Pe 2:1-3 Now there were also false prophets among the people…

this man is not seeking the well-being of these people,

The princes presented Jeremiah as an enemy of Judah, though his warnings were intended to spare lives and call the nation to accept God’s righteous judgment.

Jer 29:7 Seek the prosperity of the city to which I have sent you.…
1Co 10:24 No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.
Php 2:4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests,…

but their ruin.”

They believed his message would destroy the city’s morale, but Jerusalem’s ruin would come through rejecting God’s word. The city soon fell to Babylon, as Jeremiah had foretold.

Est 3:13 And the letters were sent by couriers…
Est 7:4 For my people and I have been sold out to destruction…
Est 8:11 By these letters the king permitted the Jews…

“Here he is,”

Jeremiah remained confined in the courtyard of the guard, where he could be summoned and questioned. Though imprisoned, he continued to speak God’s word to Judah’s leaders.

Jhn 19:4 Once again Pilate came out and said to the Jews,…
Jhn 19:5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns…
Jhn 19:14 It was the day of Preparation for the Passover…

replied King Zedekiah.

Judah’s final king faced the Babylonian siege with divided loyalties. He recognized Jeremiah’s prophetic authority but lacked the courage to follow the counsel God gave through him.

Est 5:6 And as they drank their wine, the king said to Esther,…
Est 7:2 and as they drank their wine on that second day,…
1Ki 2:20 “I have just one small request of you,” she said.…

“He is in your hands,

Zedekiah surrendered Jeremiah to the officials who sought his death. Rather than exercise the authority entrusted to him, he yielded to men determined to silence the prophet.

Gen 16:6 “Here,” said Abram, “your servant is in your hands.…
1Sa 24:4 So David’s men said to him, “This is the day…”…
1Sa 23:4 Once again, David inquired of the LORD…

since the king can do nothing to stop you.”

His words expose the weakness of his rule and the disorder within Jerusalem’s leadership. Zedekiah’s failure to protect an innocent servant of God reflected the nation’s wider rejection of God’s warnings as judgment drew near.

Dan 6:15 Then the men approached the king together and said to him,…
Est 8:8 Now you may write in the king’s name regarding the Jews,…
Est 1:19 So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree,…

So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son,

Judah’s officials acted against Jeremiah because his warnings exposed their rebellion and undermined their confidence in resisting Babylon. The cistern belonged to Malchiah, a member of the royal household, showing that Jeremiah’s persecution had support among influential leaders.

Gen 37:24 and they took him and threw him into the pit.…
Psa 88:6 You have laid me in the lowest Pit, in the darkest…
Lam 3:53 They dropped me alive into a pit and cast stones upon me.

which was in the courtyard of the guard.

Though Jeremiah had been held under guard, the officials moved him to a place where he would likely die without an open execution. The guarded palace courtyard placed him completely under the control of the authorities.

Jer 32:2 At that time the army of the king of Babylon…
Jer 33:1 While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard…
Jer 37:21 So King Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed…

They lowered Jeremiah with ropes into the cistern,

The ropes reveal that the cistern was deep and that the officials deliberately placed Jeremiah where he could not escape. Their purpose was to silence the prophet by abandonment.

Jos 2:15 Then Rahab let them down by a rope through the window,…
1Sa 19:12 So Michal lowered David from the window,…

which had no water but only mud,

The empty cistern had become a death trap. Rather than providing water, it held thick mud that made survival difficult and emphasized the desperate conditions Jeremiah endured.

Zec 9:11 As for you, because of the blood of My covenant,…
Job 30:19 He throws me into the mud, and I have become…
Psa 69:2 I have sunk into the miry depths, where there is no footing;…

and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.

Jeremiah was left helpless in the pit, bearing the consequences of faithfully delivering God’s message to a nation unwilling to hear it. His suffering reflected Judah’s moral collapse and the hostility of its leaders toward God’s word.

Jon 2:3-6 For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas,…

Now Ebed-melech the Cushite,

Ebed-melech, whose name means “servant of the king,” was a foreigner from Cush, a region south of Egypt commonly associated with present-day Sudan. His service in Judah’s royal court shows that people from other nations could hold trusted positions in Jerusalem.

Jer 39:16-18 “Go and tell Ebed-melech the Cushite that this is…
Jer 13:23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?…
Act 8:27-39 So he started out, and on his way he met…

a court official in the royal palace,

As an official connected with the palace, Ebed-melech had access to King Zedekiah and enough standing to bring an urgent matter before him. His position enabled him to act when others in the court remained silent.

Neh 1:11 O Lord, may Your ear be attentive to my prayer…
Est 2:3-4 and let the king appoint commissioners…
Dan 1:3-7 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court…

heard that Jeremiah had been put into the cistern.

Jeremiah had been lowered into an empty cistern, where he was left in mud without food and faced a slow death. The princes who opposed him sought to silence the prophet because his warnings about Jerusalem’s fall contradicted their hopes of resisting Babylon.

Gen 37:20-24 “Come now, let us kill him and throw him”…
Zec 9:11 As for you, because of the blood of My covenant,…
Lam 3:53-55 They dropped me alive into a pit and cast stones upon me.…

While the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin,

Zedekiah was at a public gate where royal and legal business was conducted. Ebed-melech approached him there to appeal for Jeremiah’s rescue, confronting the injustice committed by Judah’s leaders.

Jer 37:13-14 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin,…
Jer 20:2 he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks…
2Sa 19:8 So the king got up and sat in the gate, …

Ebed-melech went out from the king’s palace

Ebed-melech, whose name means “servant of the king,” was an Ethiopian eunuch in the service of King Zedekiah. Though a foreigner, he held a trusted place in the royal household at Jerusalem during the Babylonian siege. When Jeremiah was left to die in the cistern, Ebed-melech left the palace to seek help, showing compassion and courage amid a hostile court.

Est 5:1-2 On the third day, Esther put on her royal robes.…
Est 4:16 Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found…
Neh 2:1-5 Now in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year…

and said to the king,

Ebed-melech approached Zedekiah directly on Jeremiah’s behalf. His appeal was risky, since Jeremiah’s message of judgment had made him unpopular with the princes. Yet Ebed-melech acted justly, and the king authorized him to rescue Jeremiah from the cistern.

2Sa 14:4-5 When the woman from Tekoa went to the king,…
Est 7:3-4 If I have found favor in your sight, O king,…
1Ki 1:15-17 So Bathsheba went to see the king in his bedroom.…

“My lord the king,

Ebed-melech, a Cushite serving in Zedekiah’s court, approached the king with proper respect.

1Sa 24:8 After that, David got up, went out of the cave,…
2Sa 24:21 “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”…
1Ki 1:31 Bathsheba bowed facedown in homage to the king…

these men have acted wickedly

He plainly condemned the officials who had sought to silence Jeremiah for proclaiming God’s warning to Jerusalem.

2Ch 36:16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words…
Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets…
Act 7:52 Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute?…

in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet.

Their treatment of Jeremiah rejected both the prophet and the message God had given him.

Jer 37:15 The officials were angry with Jeremiah, and they beat him…
Jer 20:2 he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks…
Jer 26:11 Then the priests and prophets said to the officials,…

They have dropped him into the cistern,

The officials had placed Jeremiah in an empty water pit, leaving him helpless in its mud.

Lam 3:53 They dropped me alive into a pit and cast stones upon me.
Jer 18:20 Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit…

where he will starve to death,

Though they had not executed him openly, they intended that he would die from neglect.

Lam 4:9 Those slain by the sword are better off than those who die…
Jer 14:18 If I go out to the country, I see those slain by the sword;…
2Ki 6:25 So there was a great famine in Samaria…

for there is no more bread in the city.”

Jerusalem was under Babylonian siege, and its food supply was nearly exhausted, confirming the desperate conditions Jeremiah had foretold.

Lam 4:4 The nursing infant’s tongue clings in thirst…
Lam 2:11-12 My eyes fail from weeping; I am churning within.…

So the king commanded Ebed-melech the Cushite,

Zedekiah responded to Ebed-melech’s appeal for Jeremiah, whom the officials had left to die in a muddy cistern. Though Ebed-melech, whose name means “servant of the king,” was a Cushite from a region often associated with modern-day Sudan or Ethiopia and served in the royal court, he acted with greater justice and courage than Judah’s leading men.

Jer 39:16-18 “Go and tell Ebed-melech the Cushite that this is…
2Sa 18:5 Now the king had commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai,…

“Take thirty men from here with you

Zedekiah assigned enough men to carry out the rescue safely and to prevent interference from those who wanted Jeremiah dead. The size of the group reflects the danger surrounding the prophet’s imprisonment.

Exo 17:9 So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men…
Jos 8:3 So Joshua and the whole army set out to attack Ai.…

and pull Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern

Jeremiah had been lowered into a cistern in the court of the guard, where there was no water but only mud. Weak from hunger and confined in the pit, he could not escape without help.

Gen 37:24 and they took him and threw him into the pit.…
Psa 40:2 He lifted me up from the pit of despair,…
Zec 9:11 As for you, because of the blood of My covenant,…

before he dies.”

The command recognized that Jeremiah’s condition was life-threatening. God preserved His prophet despite the hostility of Judah’s officials, allowing him to continue declaring the Lord’s message during Jerusalem’s final days.

Pro 24:11-12 Rescue those being led away to death, and restrain…
Psa 79:11 May the groans of the captives reach You;…

Then Ebed-melech took the men with him

Ebed-melech, a Cushite eunuch serving in the royal court, acted with courage when Judah’s officials had left Jeremiah to die. His ability to gather men shows that he possessed sufficient authority or standing within the palace.

Jer 39:15-18 And while Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard…
Neh 2:12 I set out at night with a few men. I did not tell anyone…
Jos 8:3 So Joshua and the whole army set out to attack Ai.…

and went to the king’s palace,

The palace was the center of Jerusalem’s government and the residence of King Zedekiah. Ebed-melech’s access reflects his role among the king’s servants.

Est 5:1-2 On the third day, Esther put on her royal robes.…
Est 4:11 “All the royal officials know that one law applies”…
Neh 2:1-2 Now in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year…

to a place below the storehouse.

He went to an area beneath the palace treasury or storage rooms, where discarded materials were kept.

2Ch 31:11-12 Then Hezekiah commanded them to prepare storerooms…
Neh 13:12-13 and all Judah brought a tenth of the grain…
Mal 3:10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse…

From there he took old rags and worn-out clothes

Rather than using bare ropes alone, Ebed-melech gathered soft, worn materials to protect Jeremiah from injury during the rescue.

Jos 9:4-5 acted deceptively and set out as envoys,…
Zec 3:3-4 Now Joshua was dressed in filthy garments…
Isa 64:6 Each of us has become like something unclean,…

and lowered them with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.

Jeremiah had been abandoned in the muddy cistern because of his faithful proclamation of God’s word. Ebed-melech’s practical care provided the means for Jeremiah’s deliverance.

Jos 2:15 Then Rahab let them down by a rope through the window,…
Act 9:25 One night, however, his disciples took him…
Gen 37:24 and they took him and threw him into the pit.…

Ebed-melech the Cushite cried out to Jeremiah,

Ebed-melech, whose name means “servant of the king,” was a Cushite serving in Zedekiah’s court, likely a foreign official from the region south of Egypt. Though he held no prophetic office, he recognized the injustice done to Jeremiah and acted when Judah’s leaders would not. His intervention shows that faithfulness and courage could be found even within a corrupt royal administration.

Jer 39:16-18 “Go and tell Ebed-melech the Cushite that this is…
Pro 31:8-9 Open your mouth for those with no voice,…
Act 8:27-39 So he started out, and on his way he met…

“Put these worn-out rags and clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.”

Ebed-melech did not merely arrange Jeremiah’s rescue; he took care to protect him from further injury. Jeremiah had been weakened by his confinement in the cistern, and the padding would lessen the pain of being pulled out. His practical compassion stands in contrast to the officials who had left Jeremiah to die.

Jos 2:15 Then Rahab let them down by a rope through the window,…
Act 9:25 One night, however, his disciples took him…
2Co 11:33 But I was lowered in a basket through a window…

Jeremiah did so,

Jeremiah accepted the help provided through Ebed-melech and was drawn safely from the cistern. God preserved His prophet despite the hostility of Judah’s rulers, allowing Jeremiah to continue delivering His warning to Jerusalem.

Exo 7:6 So Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded them.
Gen 6:22 So Noah did everything precisely as God had commanded him.
2Ki 5:14 So Naaman went down and dipped himself in the Jordan…

and they pulled him up with the ropes

Ebed-melech and the men assisting him carefully drew Jeremiah from the muddy cistern, using ropes and worn cloths to protect him from injury. Their actions fulfilled the king’s order and preserved the prophet’s life.

Jos 2:15 Then Rahab let them down by a rope through the window,…
Psa 18:16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;…

and lifted him out of the cistern.

Jeremiah was delivered from a place where he had been left to die. The cistern’s mud and confinement reflected the hostility of Jerusalem’s officials toward God’s messenger.

Jon 2:6 To the roots of the mountains I descended;…
Psa 40:2 He lifted me up from the pit of despair,…

And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

Though no longer in immediate danger, Jeremiah remained under guard in the palace complex. There he continued to be accessible to King Zedekiah and others while awaiting the fulfillment of his warnings concerning Jerusalem.

Jer 37:21 So King Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed…
Jer 33:1 While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard…
Jer 32:2 At that time the army of the king of Babylon…

Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet

Zedekiah ruled Judah as Babylon’s armies tightened their hold on Jerusalem. Though Jeremiah’s warnings had brought him opposition and imprisonment, the king still recognized that the prophet spoke for the LORD and sought his counsel in the nation’s final crisis.

Jer 37:17 Later, King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him…
Jer 21:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…
2Ki 22:13-14 Go and inquire of the LORD for me, for the people,…

and received him at the third entrance to the house of the LORD.

The meeting took place at an entrance within the temple complex, away from a public assembly. Zedekiah’s choice of location reflects his caution and the political danger surrounding any association with Jeremiah, whose message called for submission to Babylon as God’s judgment.

2Ki 16:18 And on account of the king of Assyria, he removed…
2Ch 23:20 And he took with him the commanders of hundreds…
2Ki 15:35 Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away;…

“I am going to ask you something,” said the king to Jeremiah.

The king approached Jeremiah with urgency, knowing that military and political resources could not resolve Judah’s situation. He wanted to hear whether the LORD had given further direction.

2Ki 3:11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the LORD…
1Ki 22:7-8 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not still a prophet…
2Ch 18:6-7 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not still a prophet…

“Do not hide anything from me.”

Zedekiah asked for a complete and honest answer, yet his later actions show the conflict between his desire to know God’s will and his fear of the officials who opposed Jeremiah.

Jos 7:19 So Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD,…
1Sa 3:17 “What was the message He gave you?” Eli asked.…
1Ki 22:16 But the king said to him, “How many times”…

“If I tell you,” Jeremiah replied,

Jeremiah spoke to King Zedekiah during Jerusalem’s final siege by Babylon. Though the king had summoned him privately for counsel, Jeremiah had repeatedly suffered imprisonment, threats, and public opposition because he proclaimed God’s judgment against Judah.

1Sa 16:2 “How can I go?” Samuel asked. “Saul will hear of it…”…
Jhn 7:13 Yet no one would speak publicly about Him…
Pro 29:25 The fear of man is a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD…

“you will surely put me to death.

Zedekiah had not personally ordered Jeremiah’s death, but he had allowed the princes to mistreat and imprison him. Jeremiah knew that a message calling for surrender to Babylon would provoke the king’s officials and could cost him his life.

Jer 26:20-23 Now there was another man prophesying in the name…
2Ch 24:21 But they conspired against Zechariah…
1Ki 19:10 I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,…

And even if I give you advice,

Jeremiah’s counsel remained the same: Zedekiah should submit to the Babylonians, as God had commanded, and Jerusalem’s destruction and further loss of life could be avoided.

2Ch 25:16 While he was still speaking, the king asked…
Pro 1:24-25 Because you refused my call, and no one took…
Ezk 3:7 But the house of Israel will be unwilling to listen to you,…

you will not listen to me.”

The king had heard Jeremiah’s warnings before but lacked the resolve to obey. His fear of his officials and his refusal to submit to God’s word led him toward the judgment Jeremiah had foretold.

Jer 7:13 And now, because you have done all these things,…
Zec 7:11-13 But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn…
2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…

But King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah,

Zedekiah met Jeremiah privately because he feared the reaction of Judah’s officials, many of whom wanted the prophet silenced. Though king during Jerusalem’s final siege, Zedekiah lacked the resolve to follow the Lord’s warning or openly oppose those leading the nation toward ruin.

1Sa 20:3 But David again vowed, “Your father knows very well…
1Ki 1:13 Go at once to King David and say, ‘My lord the king,…

“As surely as the LORD lives, who has given us this life,

Zedekiah invoked the living God as witness to his oath, acknowledging that his life and authority ultimately came from the LORD. Yet his actions continued to fall short of the obedience Jeremiah had urged.

1Sa 25:26 Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives…
Deu 32:39 See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me…
1Sa 2:6 The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down…

I will not kill you,

Jeremiah had already suffered imprisonment and mistreatment for proclaiming that Jerusalem would fall to Babylon. The king’s pledge recognized that Jeremiah was under divine authority, even while Zedekiah remained unwilling to act decisively on the prophet’s counsel.

1Sa 19:6 Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan and swore an oath:…
1Sa 24:11 See, my father, look at the corner of your robe…
1Sa 26:11 But the LORD forbid that I should extend my hand…

nor will I deliver you into the hands of these men who are seeking your life.”

The officials regarded Jeremiah as a threat because he declared that resistance to Babylon was rebellion against God’s judgment. Zedekiah protected him for the moment, but his secret compromise revealed the weakness that would mark his final days as Jerusalem fell.

1Sa 23:14 And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds…
1Sa 23:15 While David was in Horesh in the Wilderness of Ziph,…
Psa 31:15 My times are in Your hands; deliver me from my enemies…

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah,

Jeremiah served during Judah’s final days as Babylon tightened its control over the nation. Zedekiah, Judah’s last king, faced the crisis of Jerusalem’s siege while resisting the counsel God gave through His prophet.

Jer 37:17 Later, King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him…
Jer 34:2 The LORD, the God of Israel, told Jeremiah to go…

“This is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:

Jeremiah spoke with the authority of the God who rules heaven’s armies and remains faithful to His covenant with Israel. Zedekiah was not merely receiving political advice but a command from the Lord.

Jer 32:14 “This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:”…
2Sa 7:27 For You, O LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,…

‘If you indeed surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon,

God required Zedekiah to submit to Babylon’s commanders rather than continue a hopeless resistance. Babylon’s advance was part of God’s judgment on Judah, and surrender was the appointed path of obedience.

Jer 21:9 Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine…
Jer 27:12-13 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…

then you will live,

Zedekiah would be spared the death and suffering that would follow the fall of the city.

Ezk 33:15 if he restores a pledge, makes restitution…
Deu 30:19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…

this city will not be burned down,

Jerusalem’s destruction was not inevitable in itself; it depended on the king’s response to God’s command. Obedience would preserve the city from Babylonian fire.

Jer 21:10 For I have set My face against this city…
2Ki 25:9 He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace,…

and you and your household will survive.

Zedekiah’s family and royal household would also be spared, showing that God’s warning included both judgment and a genuine offer of mercy.

Act 16:31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus”…
Jos 6:25 And Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute,…

But if you do not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon,

Jeremiah warned Zedekiah to submit to Nebuchadnezzar’s commanders. Babylon’s siege of Jerusalem was part of God’s judgment on Judah, and surrender was the appointed means of preserving life.

Jer 27:17 Do not listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon and live!…
Jer 27:12 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…
Jer 21:9 Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine…

then this city will be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans.

Jerusalem would fall to the Babylonian army if Zedekiah refused. The Chaldeans were the ruling people of Babylon, whose forces had already conquered much of Judah.

Jer 32:28 Therefore this is what the LORD says: Behold…
Jer 34:2 The LORD, the God of Israel, told Jeremiah to go…
Jer 21:10 For I have set My face against this city…

They will burn it down,

Babylon would destroy Jerusalem by fire, including the temple and royal buildings, bringing Judah’s kingdom to its end and leading to exile.

Jer 37:8 Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city.…
2Ki 25:9 He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace,…
2Ch 36:19 Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God…

and you yourself will not escape their grasp.’”

Zedekiah’s attempt to flee would fail. He was captured by Babylonian soldiers, taken before Nebuchadnezzar, blinded, and carried to Babylon.

Jer 34:3 And you yourself will not escape his grasp,…
2Ki 25:4-7 Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans…
Jer 52:8-11 but the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king…

But King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah,

Judah’s last king ruled under Babylonian authority after Nebuchadnezzar placed him on the throne. Though he repeatedly sought Jeremiah’s counsel, fear kept him from obeying God’s command to surrender.

Jer 37:17 Later, King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him…
Jer 37:3 Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah…
Jer 21:1-2 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…

“I am afraid of the Jews who have deserted to the Chaldeans,

During the siege, some Judeans had gone over to the Babylonians, or Chaldeans, in obedience to Jeremiah’s warnings. Zedekiah feared they would regard him as responsible for Jerusalem’s resistance and suffering.

Jer 37:13-14 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin,…
Jer 39:9 Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried away…
2Ki 25:11-12 Then Nebuzaradan carried into exile the people…

for the Chaldeans may deliver me into their hands

He imagined that Babylon’s commanders might turn him over to these defectors rather than protect him.

Jer 21:7 ‘After that,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over……
Jer 32:3-5 For Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him,…
Jer 34:2-3 The LORD, the God of Israel, told Jeremiah to go…

to abuse me.”

His concern for personal safety outweighed his willingness to trust the Lord’s word through Jeremiah, leaving him trapped by the consequences of his rebellion and indecision.

Jer 39:6-7 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered…
Jer 52:10-11 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons…
2Ki 25:6-7 The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up…

“They will not hand you over,”

Jeremiah answered Zedekiah’s fear that the Judeans who had joined Babylon would mistreat him if he surrendered. God offered the king protection, but only by following the course he had long resisted.

Jer 39:17-18 But I will deliver you on that day, declares the LORD,…
Jer 21:9 Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine…
Psa 31:8 You have not delivered me to the enemy; You have set my feet…

Jeremiah replied.

Speaking privately with the king, Jeremiah remained faithful despite opposition from Zedekiah’s officials and the danger he had already endured for proclaiming God’s judgment.

Jer 37:17 Later, King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him…
Jer 42:4-6 “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet.”…
1Ki 22:14 As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak…

“Obey the voice of the LORD

Zedekiah’s crisis was not merely political. God had commanded him to submit to Babylon’s rule as discipline for Judah’s rebellion.

Jer 7:23 Obey Me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people.…
Deu 13:4 You are to follow the LORD your God and fear Him.…
1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…

in what I am telling you,

Jeremiah gave no personal strategy or political advice. He delivered God’s command to leave the city and surrender to the Babylonian officials.

Jer 11:4 which I commanded your forefathers when I brought them out…
Deu 18:19 And I will hold accountable anyone who does not listen…
Jer 26:13 So now, correct your ways and deeds, and obey the voice…

that it may go well with you

Submission would spare Zedekiah, his household, and Jerusalem from the fuller destruction threatened by the siege.

Deu 5:16 Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God…
Deu 12:28 Be careful to obey all these things I command you,…
Deu 4:40 Keep His statutes and commandments, which I am giving you…

and you may live.

Even near the end of Jerusalem’s fall, God extended mercy to the king. Zedekiah’s refusal led instead to capture, the loss of his sons, and exile in Babylon.

Deu 30:16 For I am commanding you today to love the LORD your God,…
Pro 4:4 he taught me and said, “Let your heart lay hold of my words;…
Ezk 18:32 For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death,…

But if you refuse to surrender,

Zedekiah’s refusal to submit to Babylon would bring the destruction Jeremiah had repeatedly announced. Jerusalem was under Babylonian siege, and surrender was God’s appointed means of preserving the king’s life and sparing further loss within the city. Resistance would not alter Babylon’s victory but would lead to fire, captivity, and shame.

Jer 21:9 Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine…
Jer 27:12 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…
2Ki 24:12 Jehoiachin king of Judah, his mother, his servants…

this is the word that the LORD has shown me:

Jeremiah spoke by divine revelation, not personal judgment. The details that follow were certain because the Lord had disclosed Zedekiah’s outcome and the fate of Jerusalem if he rejected God’s command.

Amo 7:1 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: He was preparing…
Amo 7:4 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: The Lord GOD…
Amo 7:7 This is what He showed me: Behold, the Lord was standing…

All the women who remain in the palace of the king of Judah

The royal women, once sheltered within Jerusalem’s seat of power, would share in the city’s humiliation. Their fate revealed that neither the palace nor the royal household would escape Babylon’s conquest.

2Ki 24:15 Nebuchadnezzar carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon,…
Lam 1:18 The LORD is righteous, yet I rebelled against His command.…

will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon,

They would be taken from the palace as captives and delivered to Babylonian authorities, demonstrating Judah’s complete defeat and the end of Zedekiah’s ability to protect his household.

Jer 39:3 Then all the officials of the king of Babylon…
2Ki 25:6-7 The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up…
Jer 39:9 Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried away…

and those women will say: ‘They misled you and overcame you—those trusted friends of yours.

Zedekiah’s own advisers had encouraged resistance to Babylon and opposed Jeremiah’s warnings. Their counsel led him into disaster, yet they would not remain with him when judgment came.

Oba 1:7 All the men allied with you will drive you to the border;…
Psa 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared…
Mic 7:5-6 Do not rely on a friend; do not trust in a companion.…

Your feet sank into the mire,

The king had become helpless and trapped by the consequences of his choices. The image also recalls Jeremiah’s imprisonment in the cistern, where he sank into mud because the leaders rejected God’s message.

Psa 69:2 I have sunk into the miry depths, where there is no footing;…
Psa 40:2 He lifted me up from the pit of despair,…
Job 30:19 He throws me into the mud, and I have become…

and they deserted you.’

Those who had urged Zedekiah forward would abandon him in his downfall. His reliance on human counsel instead of the Lord left him isolated when Jerusalem fell.

2Ti 4:16 At my first defense, no one stood with me,…
Psa 88:18 You have removed my beloved and my friend;…
Psa 38:11 My beloved and friends shun my disease…

All your wives and children will be brought out to the Chaldeans.

Jerusalem’s fall would bring suffering not only upon its leaders but upon their households. Zedekiah’s family and the families of Judah’s officials would be taken by the Babylonian forces, facing captivity and exile along with the rest of the city.

2Ki 24:15 Nebuchadnezzar carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon,…
2Ki 25:7 And they slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes.…
Jer 39:6-7 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered…

And you yourself will not escape their grasp,

Zedekiah would not evade the outcome he feared. Though he later attempted to flee Jerusalem during the siege, Babylonian soldiers captured him near Jericho and brought him before Nebuchadnezzar.

Jer 34:3 And you yourself will not escape his grasp,…
Jer 32:4-5 Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape…
Ezk 12:13 But I will spread My net over him, and he will be caught…

for you will be seized by the king of Babylon,

Nebuchadnezzar’s capture of Zedekiah marked the collapse of Judah’s final earthly kingdom. The king who had rejected Jeremiah’s counsel would be delivered into the hands of Babylon, as God had declared.

2Ki 25:6 The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up…
Jer 39:5 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them…
Jer 52:9 The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up…

and this city will be burned down.”

Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and burned the temple, the palace, and many homes in 586 BC. The city’s ruin brought Judah’s rebellion to judgment and began the long exile of its people from the land.

Jer 21:10 For I have set My face against this city…
Jer 37:8 Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city.…
2Ki 25:9-10 He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace,…

Then Zedekiah warned Jeremiah,

Zedekiah, Judah’s final king, feared both the Babylonian threat outside Jerusalem and the powerful officials within his court. Though he had sought Jeremiah’s counsel, he lacked the courage to follow God openly and protect the prophet from his enemies.

1Sa 19:2 My father Saul intends to kill you. Be on guard…
Mat 2:12 And having been warned in a dream not to return…
2Ki 6:10 So the king of Israel sent word to the place…

“Do not let anyone know about this conversation,

Zedekiah wanted Jeremiah’s words kept hidden because his officials opposed the prophet and favored resistance to Babylon. His secrecy exposed the divided leadership of Jerusalem as the siege tightened around the city.

Act 23:22 So the commander dismissed the young man and instructed him…
Mat 9:30 And their eyes were opened. Jesus warned them sternly…
Luk 8:56 Her parents were astounded, but Jesus ordered them…

or you will die.

Jeremiah’s life remained in danger because he faithfully announced God’s judgment and called Judah to submit to Babylon. Zedekiah understood that his officials might kill Jeremiah if they learned of the private meeting, yet he still would not confront their rebellion.

1Ki 2:42 The king summoned Shimei and said to him, …
Exo 10:28 “Depart from me!” Pharaoh said to Moses.…
Gen 2:17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge…

If the officials hear that I have spoken with you,

Zedekiah knew that the princes opposed Jeremiah and would view a private meeting with suspicion. During the Babylonian siege, they resisted Jeremiah’s calls to submit to Babylon and feared any counsel that weakened their political position.

Jhn 12:42-43 Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him.…
Jhn 9:22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews.…

and they come and demand of you,

Jeremiah could expect an interrogation from men who held influence in the royal court and had already shown hostility toward him.

Act 5:27-29 They brought them in and made them stand before…
Jhn 18:19-21 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus…

‘Tell us what you said to the king and what he said to you;

The officials wanted to know whether Zedekiah had received further counsel from Jeremiah concerning Jerusalem’s surrender, the king’s future, or the city’s fate.

2Ki 8:4-6 Now the king had been speaking to Gehazi,…
1Ki 22:13-14 Then the messenger who had gone to call Micaiah…

do not hide it from us,

Their demand exposed the distrust within Judah’s leadership. Zedekiah sought Jeremiah’s counsel privately because he feared the reaction of his own officials.

Jos 7:19 So Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD,…
1Sa 3:17 “What was the message He gave you?” Eli asked.…

or we will kill you,’

The threat was credible, since these men had previously sought Jeremiah’s death and had placed him in the cistern. Jeremiah’s faithfulness to God’s word had made him a target of leaders determined to resist the message of judgment.

Act 23:12-15 When daylight came, the Jews formed a conspiracy…
1Ki 19:2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,…

then tell them, ‘I was presenting to the king my petition

He had appealed directly to Zedekiah for mercy, since the king alone could alter the conditions of his confinement.

Est 7:3 If I have found favor in your sight, O king,…
Est 5:8 If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it pleases…
Neh 2:4-5 “What is your request?” replied the king.…

that he not return me to the house of Jonathan

Jonathan’s house had been used as a prison, where Jeremiah had already suffered in harsh and dangerous conditions.

Jer 37:20 But now please listen, O my lord the king.…
Jer 37:15 The officials were angry with Jeremiah, and they beat him…
Jer 37:16 So Jeremiah went into a cell in the dungeon…

to die there.’”

Jeremiah feared that returning there would mean certain death. His answer to the officials concealed the king’s request for information while truthfully stating his plea for release.

Jer 37:21 So King Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed…
Lam 3:53 They dropped me alive into a pit and cast stones upon me.
Psa 88:5-6 I am forsaken among the dead, like the slain…

When all the officials came to Jeremiah and questioned him,

The Judean officials sought to learn what Jeremiah and King Zedekiah had discussed privately. During the Babylonian siege, Jeremiah’s access to the king and his counsel made him a figure of political concern. His warnings to submit to Babylon directly challenged the officials’ hopes of resisting Nebuchadnezzar.

Mat 21:23 When Jesus returned to the temple courts and began…
Mrk 11:27-28 After their return to Jerusalem, Jesus was walking…
Luk 20:1-2 One day as Jesus was teaching the people…

he relayed to them the exact words the king had commanded him to say.

Jeremiah followed Zedekiah’s instruction and repeated the explanation concerning his plea not to be returned to Jonathan’s house. He did not reveal the king’s private request for guidance, preserving the confidentiality of the meeting.

Exo 7:2 You are to speak all that I command you,…
Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
Jhn 12:49 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…

So they said no more to him,

The officials had no basis to pursue the matter further. Jeremiah’s answer was consistent with the account the king had authorized, so they questioned him no further and took no additional action against him.

Mat 22:46 No one was able to answer a word, and from that day on…
Mrk 12:34 When Jesus saw that the man had answered wisely,…
Luk 20:40 And they did not dare to question Him any further.

for no one had overheard the conversation.

Because the meeting had been private, the officials could not disprove Jeremiah’s report or discover the king’s fearful inquiry. The secrecy, reflecting divine providence working through hidden means, protected Jeremiah at a critical moment while Zedekiah continued to waver between the word of the Lord and pressure from his officials.

Mat 10:26-27 So do not be afraid of them. For there is…
Luk 12:2-3 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed…
Pro 25:9-10 Argue your case with your neighbor without betraying…

And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard

Jeremiah was held within the palace complex rather than in a common dungeon. Though restricted, he could receive visitors and remained near the center of Jerusalem’s political crisis. His confinement reflected the hostility of Judah’s leaders toward the message God had given him, even as the Lord preserved him through the city’s final days.

Jer 37:21 So King Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed…
Jer 33:1 While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard…
Jer 32:2 At that time the army of the king of Babylon…

until the day Jerusalem was captured.

Jeremiah remained imprisoned until Babylon’s forces took Jerusalem in 586 BC after a long siege. The city’s fall fulfilled the warnings he had delivered concerning Judah’s rebellion, idolatry, and refusal to submit to Babylon.

Jer 39:14 had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard…
Jer 39:1-3 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah,…
2Ki 25:1-4 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
