Berean Study Bible Children and ParentsYoung believers are addressed directly as responsible members of Christian households. Their conduct within the family mattered to the life and witness of the church. Mrk 10:14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and told them… obey your parents God assigns parents authority to instruct, protect, and govern their children. Obedience includes listening to their correction and following their lawful direction. Luk 2:51 Then He went down to Nazareth with them… in the Lord, Family authority operates under Christ’s greater authority. Children are to obey parents in ways consistent with God’s commands and truth. Col 3:20 Children, obey your parents in everything,… for this is right. Obedience to godly parental authority accords with God’s order for the family and promotes peace, discipline, and stability in the home. Deu 6:18 Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD,… “Honor your father and mother” Drawn from the Ten Commandments, this instruction places the family at the center of covenant life. Parents bear God-given responsibility to raise, teach, and govern their children, and honoring them recognizes that authority. Such honor includes respect, obedience during childhood, and care for parents as they age. Exo 20:12 Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long… (which is the first commandment with a promise), The command carries God’s promise of well-being and enduring life for those who live under His order. In Israel, honoring parents strengthened households and preserved the stability of the community. Deu 5:33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God… “that it may go well with you Honoring father and mother brings a child into the order God established for family life. God attached blessing to this command, promising well-being to those who live under His authority. Deu 6:3 Hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe them… and that you may have a long life Long life was recognized as a blessing from God, not merely additional years but a life marked by stability, protection, and the fruit of righteous conduct. The promise affirms God’s favor toward obedience. Exo 20:12 Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long… on the earth.” Paul applies the command to Christian children without limiting it to Israel’s land. God’s design for the family remains in force wherever His people live, and obedience affects life in the ordinary, visible world. Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath; Fathers held broad authority in the Roman household, yet Christian authority was not to be exercised through cruelty, humiliation, inconsistency, or excessive severity. A father’s conduct could foster resentment and discourage a child rather than guide him toward obedience and maturity. Col 3:21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they will not… instead, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Fathers are to provide steady care, correction, and teaching shaped by the Lord’s will. Training includes both discipline that forms character and instruction that directs children in the truth of God, making the home a primary setting for their spiritual and moral upbringing. Deu 6:6-7 These words I am commanding you today are to be…
Serving with HonorRoman slavery placed bondservants within households, farms, businesses, and public service. Many had significant responsibilities, though they remained under a master’s legal authority. Paul addressed believers living within this existing social order, directing them to honor God through faithful obedience rather than approving every feature of slavery. Tit 2:9 Slaves are to submit to their own masters in everything… with respect and fear Christian servants were to recognize the authority entrusted to their masters and serve without rebellion, contempt, or deceit. Such conduct reflected reverence for God, who sees how His people respond under authority. 1Pe 2:18 Servants, submit yourselves to your masters… and sincerity of heart, Their service was to be genuine, not merely performed when watched. Faithfulness in ordinary duties revealed an undivided heart and a life governed by truth. Col 3:22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything,… just as you would obey Christ. Service to an earthly master was ultimately rendered under Christ’s lordship. Even difficult or unnoticed work could be done as an expression of obedience to Him. 2Co 10:5 We demolish arguments and every presumption… And do this not only to please them while they are watching, Christian servants were not to work diligently only under a master’s supervision. Such outward compliance concealed a divided heart and produced service governed by fear or self-interest rather than faithfulness. Col 3:22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything,… but as servants of Christ, Earthly authority did not alter the believer’s highest allegiance. Even in the unequal conditions of Roman society, a Christian’s labor belonged ultimately to Christ, who sees both public conduct and hidden motives. Col 3:24 because you know that you will receive an inheritance… doing the will of God from your heart. Obedience was to arise from an inward commitment to God rather than mere external duty. Through this wholehearted service, ordinary work became an expression of submission to God’s purposes. Psa 40:8 I delight to do Your will, O my God; … Serve with good will, Christian servants were to carry out their duties sincerely and kindly, even within the harsh realities of Roman slavery. Their conduct was to show the transforming work of Christ rather than mere outward compliance. Psa 100:2 Serve the LORD with gladness; come into His presence… as to the Lord Every lawful task was to be performed under Christ’s authority. Service given faithfully in daily responsibilities was received by Him as service rendered to Himself. Col 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being,… and not to men, Earthly masters held temporary authority, but Christ was the ultimate Master. Believers were not to serve merely for recognition, reward, or fear of human displeasure, knowing that the Lord sees and values faithful obedience. 1Th 2:4 Instead, we speak as those approved by God… because you know that the Lord will reward each one God sees and remembers the faithful service of His people. Their labor is not measured by human recognition, social rank, or earthly gain, but by the Lord’s righteous judgment. Mat 16:27 For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory… for whatever good he does, Every act done in obedience to God matters before Him, including duties that may seem ordinary or unnoticed. He judges both actions and the heart from which they proceed. Rom 2:7 To those who by perseverance in doing good… whether he is slave or free. In the first-century Roman world, slaves and free people lived under sharply different conditions, yet both stood equally accountable before Christ. Neither bondage nor freedom changed a believer’s value before the Lord or excluded anyone from His reward. 1Co 12:13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body… And masters, do the same for your slaves. Christian masters were to deal with their slaves in good faith, with respect and concern for their welfare. Though Roman law gave owners broad power over slaves, those who belonged to Christ were to recognize them as fellow servants of God. Lev 25:43 You are not to rule over them harshly,… Give up your use of threats, Masters were not to govern through intimidation or cruelty. Authority in the household was to be exercised with justice and self-control rather than fear. Luk 3:14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”… because you know that He who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, Both master and slave stood under the authority of the risen Christ. Earthly rank did not remove a master’s responsibility to obey the Lord or answer to Him for his conduct. Col 4:1 Masters, supply your slaves with what is right… and there is no favoritism with Him. God judges all people impartially. Social standing, wealth, citizenship, and power do not alter His standard of righteousness. Act 10:34-35 Then Peter began to speak: “I now truly understand…
The Full Armor of GodPaul concludes his instruction on the believer’s life by turning to the conflict every Christian faces in a fallen world. 1Th 4:1 Finally, brothers, we ask and encourage you… be strong in the Lord Strength for this conflict comes through dependence on Christ, not human resolve or ability. Believers stand in their union with Him and under His authority. Psa 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts… and in His mighty power. God supplies the power needed to resist spiritual opposition and remain faithful. The same sovereign power that accomplishes His purposes is sufficient for His people. Eph 1:19-20 and the surpassing greatness of His power to us who believe.… Put on the full armor of God, Believers are commanded to take up God’s complete provision for spiritual battle. Paul draws on the image of a fully equipped Roman soldier, a familiar sight in Roman-ruled Ephesus. No part of this armor is optional: truth, righteousness, readiness through the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and God’s Word together protect and equip God’s people. Isa 59:17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate,… so that you can make your stand The goal is not retreat but firm resistance. Christians are to remain steady in faith and obedience when confronted by pressure, temptation, falsehood, and opposition. 1Co 16:13 Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage.… against the devil’s schemes. Satan works through deception, accusation, temptation, and efforts to weaken faith. His attacks are often deliberate and subtle, making spiritual readiness, vigilance, and dependence on God necessary. 2Co 2:11 in order that Satan should not outwit us.… For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, This phrase emphasizes that the Christian battle is not a physical one against human beings. The term "flesh and blood" is a common biblical idiom for humanity (Matthew 16:17). The struggle is spiritual, indicating that believers must focus on spiritual disciplines and the power of God rather than human strength or wisdom. This aligns with 2 Corinthians 10:3-4, which speaks of spiritual warfare using divine power. 2Co 10:3-5 For though we live in the flesh, we do not wage war… but against the rulers, The rulers refer to spiritual entities with authority in the unseen realm. These are not earthly rulers but spiritual beings that exert influence over the world. This concept is echoed in Colossians 1:16, where Paul speaks of thrones, dominions, rulers, and authorities created through and for Christ, indicating a hierarchy in the spiritual realm. 1Co 2:6-8 Among the mature, however, we speak a message of wisdom… against the authorities, Authorities suggests a structured hierarchy of evil spiritual forces. This term implies a level of organization and power that these entities hold. In the context of the Roman Empire, authority was a well-understood concept, and Paul uses this to illustrate the organized nature of spiritual opposition. This is further supported by Daniel 10:13, where a spiritual prince opposes an angelic messenger. Col 1:16 For in Him all things were created, things in heaven… against the powers of this world’s darkness, Paul describes organized ranks of hostile spiritual beings exercising influence in a fallen world. Their work promotes darkness, disorder, falsehood, and resistance to God’s purposes. Luk 22:53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,… and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. The conflict reaches into the unseen spiritual realm, where demonic powers oppose Christ and His people. Believers stand against these forces through the strength and resources God provides, not through worldly power. Dan 10:13 However, the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed… Therefore take up the full armor of God, Believers are commanded to use the protection God provides for the conflict against spiritual forces. The image of a fully armed soldier shows that God supplies everything needed to resist evil. Isa 59:17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate,… so that when the day of evil comes, Times of temptation, opposition, suffering, and deception are certain in a fallen world. Early Christians faced such pressure through hostility and persecution, and believers continue to encounter it in every generation. Pro 24:10 If you faint in the day of distress, how small… you will be able to stand your ground, The goal is not retreat or compromise but firm resistance. Christians stand their ground, maintaining their position and not yielding to the enemy, by relying on God’s strength and remaining faithful to His truth. 1Co 16:13 Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage.… and having done everything, to stand. After preparing diligently and fulfilling their duty, believers are to remain steadfast. The repeated command to stand stresses endurance and the security found in God’s provision. Luk 17:10 So you also, when you have done everything commanded of you,… Stand firm then, Believers are commanded to hold their ground against spiritual opposition rather than retreat or compromise. The image reflects a soldier remaining at his post, secure in the strength God supplies. 2Th 2:15 Therefore, brothers, stand firm and cling to the traditions… with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, A Roman soldier’s belt gathered his garments and supported his equipment, enabling him to move and fight effectively. Truth provides the same essential stability: God’s revealed truth governs belief and conduct, exposing deception and sustaining integrity. Jhn 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth. with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed, The breastplate guarded the chest and vital organs. Righteousness protects the believer through Christ’s righteous standing before God and through a life increasingly marked by obedience. It guards the heart against accusation, temptation, and the corrupting influence of sin. Isa 59:17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate,… and with your feet fitted Roman soldiers wore sturdy footwear for marching over rough ground and maintaining their position in combat. Believers are to be firmly prepared, not easily moved when opposition comes. Rom 10:15 And how can they preach unless they are sent?… with the readiness Such preparation requires alertness and steady commitment to God’s truth, enabling believers to stand and to carry His message wherever they are sent. 2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season;… of the gospel The gospel proclaims salvation through Jesus Christ—His death for sin and His resurrection from the dead. It gives believers both their message and their confidence. Eph 1:13 And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth… of peace. Through Christ, sinners are reconciled to God and receive peace with Him. That peace strengthens believers amid conflict and directs them to live peaceably with others. Eph 2:14-17 For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one… In addition to all this, Paul adds the shield to the armor already described, showing that each piece is necessary for standing against spiritual opposition. Rom 13:12 The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near.… take up the shield of faith, Roman soldiers commonly carried large shields that covered much of the body and could be joined with others for protection in battle. Faith is settled trust in God, His character, and His promises, guarding believers against attacks intended to weaken their confidence in Him. Psa 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts… with which you can extinguish Faith does more than absorb the enemy’s assaults; it renders them powerless by answering lies, fear, accusation, and temptation with trust in God. Heb 11:34 quenched the raging fire, and escaped the edge of the sword… all the flaming arrows Ancient armies used burning arrows to spread panic and destruction. These represent the varied assaults directed against believers, including deception, doubt, fear, and enticement to sin. Psa 7:13 He has prepared His deadly weapons; He ordains His arrows… of the evil one. Satan actively opposes God’s people and seeks to undermine their obedience and confidence. The shield of faith provides protection against his attacks. Jhn 17:15 I am not asking that You take them out of the world,… And take the helmet of salvation Roman soldiers depended on helmets to protect them from blows that could quickly end a battle. Salvation guards the believer’s mind with the settled assurance of belonging to Christ and possessing eternal life. It answers fear, doubt, and the enemy’s accusations by fixing the believer’s confidence on God’s saving work. Isa 59:17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate,… and the sword of the Spirit, Unlike the defensive pieces of armor, the sword is used to meet the enemy’s attacks directly. Roman soldiers carried short swords suited for close combat, requiring skill and readiness. The Holy Spirit equips believers to use God’s truth against temptation, deception, and falsehood. Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active.… which is the word of God. Scripture is God’s authoritative revelation, giving truth for discernment, correction, and endurance. Jesus answered Satan’s temptations with Scripture, showing that God’s Word is sufficient to expose lies and direct faithful obedience. Rev 19:13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,… Pray in the Spirit at all times, Prayer is to be shaped by the Holy Spirit’s leading and directed toward God’s will. Believers depend on the Spirit in weakness and remain in continual fellowship with God throughout daily life. Jud 1:20 But you, beloved, by building yourselves up… with every kind of prayer and petition. Prayer includes worship, thanksgiving, confession, requests, and intercession. Every circumstance, need, and burden may be brought before God. Php 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer… To this end, stay alert Spiritual vigilance was necessary for believers facing temptation, false teaching, opposition, and persecution. Watchfulness enabled the church to recognize dangers and respond faithfully. Col 4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful, with all perseverance Prayer requires endurance when trials continue and answers are not immediate. Paul wrote as a prisoner, reminding believers to remain steadfast rather than becoming discouraged. Luk 18:1 Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray… in your prayers for all the saints. The church is to bear one another’s burdens before God. All believers belong to one body and share responsibility for the spiritual needs, protection, and endurance of fellow Christians. Eph 1:15-16 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith… Pray also for me, Paul asks the Ephesian believers to support him in prayer, showing that even an apostle depended on the prayers of the churches. His imprisonment did not lessen his calling or his need for God’s help. Rom 15:30 Now I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ… that whenever I open my mouth, Whether before rulers, guards, fellow prisoners, or gathered believers, Paul sought opportunities to proclaim Christ. His ministry centered on publicly declaring the message entrusted to him. Psa 51:15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. words may be given me Paul desired speech directed by God, not merely human skill or persuasion. He needed wisdom and clarity to present the truth faithfully in every setting. Mat 10:19-20 But when they hand you over, do not worry… so that I will boldly Imprisonment and opposition made courage necessary. Paul prayed not primarily for release, but for freedom from fear as he continued to speak. Act 4:29-31 And now, Lord, consider their threats,… make known the mystery of the gospel, God had revealed in Christ His long-hidden plan of salvation, bringing Jews and Gentiles together as one people through faith. Paul was entrusted with making that message known clearly and without compromise. Col 4:3-4 as you pray also for us, that God may open to us a door… for which I am an ambassador in chains. Paul’s Roman imprisonment did not diminish his calling as Christ’s representative. Though confined and guarded, he continued to carry the authority of the King he served, bearing witness to the gospel despite the cost of persecution. 2Co 5:20 Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ… Pray that I may proclaim it fearlessly, Rather than asking primarily for release, Paul asks believers to pray for courage to speak openly. The gospel faced opposition, and faithful proclamation required strength supplied by God. Act 4:29-31 And now, Lord, consider their threats,… as I should. Paul recognized his obligation to carry out the commission entrusted to him. His circumstances could not excuse silence; he was determined to speak the truth with the boldness required of a servant of Christ. Col 4:4 Pray that I may declare it clearly, as I should.
Final GreetingsTychicus was a trusted companion of Paul, likely from Asia Minor, who had traveled with him and served the churches faithfully. Paul regarded him not merely as an assistant but as a brother in Christ, dependable in both service and character. Col 4:7 Tychicus will tell you all the news about me.… will tell you everything, Paul entrusted Tychicus to deliver the letter and provide a full report of his imprisonment, ministry, and circumstances. His presence ensured that the Ephesian believers received accurate personal news beyond what the letter recorded. Col 4:9 With him I am sending Onesimus, our faithful… so that you also may know about me and what I am doing. Though imprisoned, Paul remained active in the work of the gospel. Keeping the church informed strengthened their unity with him and reminded them that his chains had not ended his ministry. Col 4:8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose,… I have sent him to you for this very purpose, Paul had sent Tychicus, a trusted fellow worker, to Ephesus as his personal representative. Travel and communication were difficult, so reliable messengers helped maintain fellowship between Paul and the churches he served. Col 4:8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose,… that you may know about us, Tychicus would provide a firsthand report of Paul’s imprisonment, his companions, and the continuing advance of the gospel. The Ephesian believers could then understand Paul’s circumstances and pray for him with informed concern. Col 4:7 Tychicus will tell you all the news about me.… and that he may encourage your hearts. Tychicus was also sent to strengthen the church during a time when Paul’s chains could have caused uncertainty or discouragement. His presence and report would remind them that Christ’s work continued and that they remained connected to Paul and the wider body of believers. Col 2:2 that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love,… Peace to the brothers Paul closes by asking God to grant the believers peace marked by spiritual wholeness, unity, and freedom from the hostility that once divided Jew and Gentile. The “brothers” are fellow members of God’s household, joined together through Christ. 1Pe 5:14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you… and love with faith Love and faith belong together in Christian life. Faith rests in God and His promises, while love displays that faith in faithful service toward other believers. Both are gifts that strengthen the church’s unity. 1Th 5:8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober,… from God the Father God is the source of every spiritual blessing and cares for believers as His children. Their peace, love, and faith do not arise from human effort but from His gracious provision. Eph 1:2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father… and the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ shares with the Father in granting these blessings. As Lord, He rules His church and secures peace with God through His saving work. 2Th 3:18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. Grace to all Paul closes by invoking God’s favor and sustaining help upon every believer in the churches of Asia Minor. The grace that saves Jews and Gentiles alike also preserves Christ’s people as they live in a hostile world. Rev 22:21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen. who love our Lord Jesus Christ Genuine faith is marked by devotion to the risen and reigning Jesus, expressed in allegiance to His authority and obedience to His commands. The church’s hope rests in Him as Lord, Savior, and promised Messiah. Jhn 21:17 Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John…”… with an undying love. Believers are called to remain faithful to Christ with a love that does not fade, even through hardship, opposition, or changing circumstances. 1Co 13:8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
