The Mighty Men Join David at Ziklag

Now these were the men who came to David at Ziklag,

Ziklag, a Philistine town granted to David by Achish of Gath, became his refuge while he was fleeing Saul. Though living in exile, David was steadily gaining loyal followers who recognized God’s hand upon him and joined themselves to his cause.

These Gadites were army commanders,

Descended from Gad and settled east of the Jordan, these men came from a border region often exposed to hostile neighbors. Their experience in warfare and their proven courage made them valuable leaders among the forces gathering around David.

All these men of war,

“All these men of war” refers to the seasoned fighters from every tribe who came in strength to support David. Their presence showed that allegiance to Saul’s house had largely given way to recognition of David as God’s chosen king.

Their purpose was settled: David would reign not only over Judah but over the whole nation. The gathering marked the end of division and the establishment of David’s rule over Israel.
