1He was praying in a certain place, and when He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples."

1Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτὸν ἐν τόπῳ τινὶ προσευχόμενον ὡς ἐπαύσατο εἶπέν τις τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτόν Κύριε δίδαξον ἡμᾶς προσεύχεσθαι καθὼς καὶ Ἰωάννης ἐδίδαξεν τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ

2He said to them, "Whenever you pray, say: Father, Your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come.

2Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ὅταν προσεύχησθε λέγετε Πάτερ ⧼ἡμῶν ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς⧽ ἁγιασθήτω τὸ ὄνομά σου Ἐλθέτω* ἡ βασιλεία σου ⧼Γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου ὡς ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς⧽

3Give us each day our daily bread.

3Τὸν ἄρτον ἡμῶν τὸν ἐπιούσιον δίδου ἡμῖν τὸ καθ’ ἡμέραν

4And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone in debt to us. And do not bring us into temptation."

4Καὶ ἄφες ἡμῖν τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν Καὶ γὰρ αὐτοὶ ἀφίομεν παντὶ ὀφείλοντι ἡμῖν Καὶ μὴ εἰσενέγκῃς ἡμᾶς εἰς πειρασμόν ⧼ἀλλὰ ῥῦσαι ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ⧽

5He also said to them: "Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him at midnight and says to him, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,

5Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἕξει φίλον καὶ πορεύσεται πρὸς αὐτὸν μεσονυκτίου καὶ εἴπῃ αὐτῷ Φίλε χρῆσόν μοι τρεῖς ἄρτους

6because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I don't have anything to offer him.'

6ἐπειδὴ φίλος μου παρεγένετο ἐξ ὁδοῦ πρός με καὶ οὐκ ἔχω ὃ παραθήσω αὐτῷ

7Then he will answer from inside and say, Don't bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I have gone to bed. I can't get up to give you anything.'

7Κἀκεῖνος ἔσωθεν ἀποκριθεὶς εἴπῃ Μή μοι κόπους πάρεχε ἤδη ἡ θύρα κέκλεισται καὶ τὰ παιδία μου μετ’ ἐμοῦ εἰς τὴν κοίτην εἰσίν οὐ δύναμαι ἀναστὰς δοῦναί σοι

8I tell you, even though he won't get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his friend's persistence, he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

8Λέγω ὑμῖν εἰ καὶ οὐ δώσει αὐτῷ ἀναστὰς διὰ τὸ εἶναι φίλον αὐτοῦ διά γε τὴν ἀναίδειαν αὐτοῦ ἐγερθεὶς δώσει αὐτῷ ὅσων χρῄζει

9"So I say to you, keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you.

9Κἀγὼ ὑμῖν λέγω αἰτεῖτε καὶ δοθήσεται ὑμῖν ζητεῖτε καὶ εὑρήσετε κρούετε καὶ ἀνοιγήσεται ὑμῖν

10For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

10πᾶς γὰρ ὁ αἰτῶν λαμβάνει καὶ ὁ ζητῶν εὑρίσκει καὶ τῷ κρούοντι ἀνοιγήσεται

11What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish?

11Τίνα δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν τὸν πατέρα αἰτήσει ὁ υἱὸς ἰχθύν καὶ* ἀντὶ ἰχθύος ὄφιν αὐτῷ ἐπιδώσει

12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

12ἢ καὶ αἰτήσει ᾠόν ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ σκορπίον

13If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"

13εἰ οὖν ὑμεῖς πονηροὶ ὑπάρχοντες οἴδατε δόματα ἀγαθὰ διδόναι τοῖς τέκνοις ὑμῶν πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὁ Πατὴρ ὁ ἐξ οὐρανοῦ δώσει Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον τοῖς αἰτοῦσιν αὐτόν

14Now He was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon came out, the man who had been mute, spoke, and the crowds were amazed.

14Καὶ ἦν ἐκβάλλων δαιμόνιον καὶ αὐτὸ ἦν κωφόν ἐγένετο δὲ τοῦ δαιμονίου ἐξελθόντος ἐλάλησεν ὁ κωφός καὶ ἐθαύμασαν οἱ ὄχλοι

15But some of them said, "He drives out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons!"

15τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶπον* Ἐν Βεελζεβοὺλ τῷ ἄρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια

16And others, as a test, were demanding of Him a sign from heaven.

16ἕτεροι δὲ πειράζοντες σημεῖον ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐζήτουν παρ’ αὐτοῦ

17Knowing their thoughts, He told them: "Every kingdom divided against itself is headed for destruction, and a house divided against itself falls.

17Αὐτὸς δὲ εἰδὼς αὐτῶν τὰ διανοήματα εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πᾶσα βασιλεία ἐφ’ ἑαυτὴν διαμερισθεῖσα ἐρημοῦται καὶ οἶκος ἐπὶ οἶκον πίπτει

18If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say I drive out demons by Beelzebul.

18εἰ δὲ καὶ ὁ Σατανᾶς ἐφ’ ἑαυτὸν διεμερίσθη πῶς σταθήσεται ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ ὅτι λέγετε ἐν Βεελζεβοὺλ ἐκβάλλειν με τὰ δαιμόνια

19And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, who is it your sons drive them out by? For this reason they will be your judges.

19εἰ δὲ ἐγὼ ἐν Βεελζεβοὺλ ἐκβάλλω τὰ δαιμόνια οἱ υἱοὶ ὑμῶν ἐν τίνι ἐκβάλλουσιν διὰ τοῦτο αὐτοὶ ὑμῶν κριταὶ ἔσονται

20If I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.

20εἰ δὲ ἐν δακτύλῳ Θεοῦ ἐγὼ ἐκβάλλω τὰ δαιμόνια ἄρα ἔφθασεν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ

21When a strong man, fully armed, guards his estate, his possessions are secure.

21Ὅταν ὁ ἰσχυρὸς καθωπλισμένος φυλάσσῃ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ αὐλήν ἐν εἰρήνῃ ἐστὶν τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ

22But when one stronger than he attacks and overpowers him, he takes from him all his weapons he trusted in, and divides up his plunder.

22ἐπὰν δὲ ἰσχυρότερος αὐτοῦ ἐπελθὼν νικήσῃ αὐτόν τὴν πανοπλίαν αὐτοῦ αἴρει ἐφ’ ᾗ ἐπεποίθει καὶ τὰ σκῦλα αὐτοῦ διαδίδωσιν

23Anyone who is not with Me is against Me, and anyone who does not gather with Me scatters.

23Ὁ μὴ ὢν μετ’ ἐμοῦ κατ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστιν καὶ ὁ μὴ συνάγων μετ’ ἐμοῦ σκορπίζει

24"When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it roams through waterless places looking for rest, and not finding rest, it then says, I'll go back to my house where I came from.'

24Ὅταν τὸ ἀκάθαρτον πνεῦμα ἐξέλθῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου διέρχεται δι’ ἀνύδρων τόπων ζητοῦν ἀνάπαυσιν καὶ μὴ εὑρίσκον [τότε] λέγει Ὑποστρέψω εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μου ὅθεν ἐξῆλθον

25And returning, it finds the house swept and put in order.

25καὶ ἐλθὸν εὑρίσκει (σχολάζοντα) σεσαρωμένον καὶ κεκοσμημένον

26Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that man's last condition is worse than the first."

26τότε πορεύεται καὶ παραλαμβάνει ἕτερα πνεύματα πονηρότερα ἑαυτοῦ ἑπτά καὶ εἰσελθόντα κατοικεῖ ἐκεῖ καὶ γίνεται τὰ ἔσχατα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκείνου χείρονα τῶν πρώτων

27As He was saying these things, a woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, "The womb that bore You and the one who nursed You are blessed!"

27Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ λέγειν αὐτὸν ταῦτα ἐπάρασά τις φωνὴν γυνὴ ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου εἶπεν αὐτῷ Μακαρία ἡ κοιλία ἡ βαστάσασά σε καὶ μαστοὶ οὓς ἐθήλασας

28He said, "Even more, those who hear the word of God and keep it are blessed!"

28Αὐτὸς δὲ εἶπεν Μενοῦν μακάριοι οἱ ἀκούοντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ φυλάσσοντες

29As the crowds were increasing, He began saying: "This generation is an evil generation. It demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

29Τῶν δὲ ὄχλων ἐπαθροιζομένων ἤρξατο λέγειν Ἡ γενεὰ αὕτη γενεὰ πονηρά ἐστιν σημεῖον ζητεῖ καὶ σημεῖον οὐ δοθήσεται αὐτῇ εἰ μὴ τὸ σημεῖον Ἰωνᾶ

30For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation.

30καθὼς γὰρ ἐγένετο (ὁ) Ἰωνᾶς τοῖς Νινευίταις σημεῖον οὕτως ἔσται καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τῇ γενεᾷ ταύτῃ

31The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and look--something greater than Solomon is here!

31Βασίλισσα νότου ἐγερθήσεται ἐν τῇ κρίσει μετὰ τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης καὶ κατακρινεῖ αὐτούς ὅτι ἦλθεν ἐκ τῶν περάτων τῆς γῆς ἀκοῦσαι τὴν σοφίαν Σολομῶνος καὶ ἰδοὺ πλεῖον Σολομῶνος ὧδε

32The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah's proclamation, and look--something greater than Jonah is here!

32ἄνδρες Νινευῖται ἀναστήσονται ἐν τῇ κρίσει μετὰ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτήν ὅτι μετενόησαν εἰς τὸ κήρυγμα Ἰωνᾶ καὶ ἰδοὺ πλεῖον Ἰωνᾶ ὧδε

33"No one lights a lamp and puts it in the cellar or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light.

33Οὐδεὶς λύχνον ἅψας εἰς κρύπτην τίθησιν οὐδὲ ὑπὸ τὸν μόδιον ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ τὴν λυχνίαν ἵνα οἱ εἰσπορευόμενοι τὸ φέγγος βλέπωσιν

34Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is bad, your body is also full of darkness.

34Ὁ λύχνος τοῦ σώματός ἐστιν ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου ὅταν ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου ἁπλοῦς ᾖ καὶ ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου φωτεινόν ἐστιν ἐπὰν δὲ πονηρὸς ᾖ καὶ τὸ σῶμά σου σκοτεινόν

35Take care then, that the light in you is not darkness.

35σκόπει οὖν μὴ τὸ φῶς τὸ ἐν σοὶ σκότος ἐστίν

36If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be entirely illuminated, as when a lamp shines its light on you."

36εἰ οὖν τὸ σῶμά σου ὅλον φωτεινόν μὴ ἔχον μέρος τι σκοτεινόν ἔσται φωτεινὸν ὅλον ὡς ὅταν ὁ λύχνος τῇ ἀστραπῇ φωτίζῃ σε

37As He was speaking, a Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and reclined at the table.

37Ἐν δὲ τῷ λαλῆσαι ἐρωτᾷ αὐτὸν Φαρισαῖος ὅπως ἀριστήσῃ παρ’ αὐτῷ εἰσελθὼν δὲ ἀνέπεσεν

38When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed that He did not first perform the ritual washing before dinner.

38ὁ δὲ Φαρισαῖος ἰδὼν ἐθαύμασεν ὅτι οὐ πρῶτον ἐβαπτίσθη πρὸ τοῦ ἀρίστου

39But the Lord said to him: "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil.

39Εἶπεν δὲ ὁ Κύριος πρὸς αὐτόν Νῦν ὑμεῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι τὸ ἔξωθεν τοῦ ποτηρίου καὶ τοῦ πίνακος καθαρίζετε τὸ δὲ ἔσωθεν ὑμῶν γέμει ἁρπαγῆς καὶ πονηρίας

40Fools! Didn't He who made the outside make the inside too?

40ἄφρονες οὐχ ὁ ποιήσας τὸ ἔξωθεν καὶ τὸ ἔσωθεν ἐποίησεν

41But give from what is within to the poor, and then everything is clean for you.

41πλὴν τὰ ἐνόντα δότε ἐλεημοσύνην καὶ ἰδοὺ πάντα καθαρὰ ὑμῖν ἐστιν

42"But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass justice and love for God. These things you should have done without neglecting the others.

42Ἀλλὰ οὐαὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς Φαρισαίοις ὅτι ἀποδεκατοῦτε τὸ ἡδύοσμον καὶ τὸ πήγανον καὶ πᾶν λάχανον καὶ παρέρχεσθε τὴν κρίσιν καὶ τὴν ἀγάπην τοῦ Θεοῦ ταῦτα δὲ ἔδει ποιῆσαι κἀκεῖνα μὴ παρεῖναι

43"Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.

43Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς Φαρισαίοις ὅτι ἀγαπᾶτε τὴν πρωτοκαθεδρίαν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ τοὺς ἀσπασμοὺς ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς

44"Woe to you! You are like unmarked graves; the people who walk over them don't know it."

44οὐαὶ ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐστὲ ὡς τὰ μνημεῖα τὰ ἄδηλα καὶ οἱ ἄνθρωποι οἱ περιπατοῦντες ἐπάνω οὐκ οἴδασιν

45One of the experts in the law answered Him, "Teacher, when You say these things You insult us too."

45Ἀποκριθεὶς δέ τις τῶν νομικῶν λέγει αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλε ταῦτα λέγων καὶ ἡμᾶς ὑβρίζεις

46Then He said: "Woe also to you experts in the law! You load people with burdens that are hard to carry, yet you yourselves don't touch these burdens with one of your fingers.

46Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Καὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς νομικοῖς οὐαί ὅτι φορτίζετε τοὺς ἀνθρώπους φορτία δυσβάστακτα καὶ αὐτοὶ ἑνὶ τῶν δακτύλων ὑμῶν οὐ προσψαύετε τοῖς φορτίοις

47"Woe to you! You build monuments to the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

47οὐαὶ ὑμῖν ὅτι οἰκοδομεῖτε τὰ μνημεῖα τῶν προφητῶν οἱ δὲ πατέρες ὑμῶν ἀπέκτειναν αὐτούς

48Therefore, you are witnesses that you approve the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their monuments.

48ἄρα μάρτυρές ἐστε καὶ συνευδοκεῖτε τοῖς ἔργοις τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν ὅτι αὐτοὶ μὲν ἀπέκτειναν αὐτοὺς ὑμεῖς δὲ οἰκοδομεῖτε

49Because of this, the wisdom of God said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,'

49διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ἡ σοφία τοῦ Θεοῦ εἶπεν Ἀποστελῶ εἰς αὐτοὺς προφήτας καὶ ἀποστόλους καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀποκτενοῦσιν καὶ διώξουσιν

50so that this generation may be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world --

50ἵνα ἐκζητηθῇ τὸ αἷμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν τὸ ἐκκεχυμένον ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου ἀπὸ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης

51from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. "Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible.

51ἀπὸ αἵματος Ἅβελ ἕως αἵματος Ζαχαρίου τοῦ ἀπολομένου μεταξὺ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ τοῦ οἴκου ναί λέγω ὑμῖν ἐκζητηθήσεται ἀπὸ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης

52"Woe to you experts in the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge! You didn't go in yourselves, and you hindered those who were going in."

52Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς νομικοῖς ὅτι ἤρατε τὴν κλεῖδα τῆς γνώσεως αὐτοὶ οὐκ εἰσήλθατε καὶ τοὺς εἰσερχομένους ἐκωλύσατε

53When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose Him fiercely and to cross-examine Him about many things;

53Κἀκεῖθεν ἐξελθόντος αὐτοῦ ἤρξαντο οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι δεινῶς ἐνέχειν καὶ ἀποστοματίζειν αὐτὸν περὶ πλειόνων

54they were lying in wait for Him to trap Him in something He said.

54ἐνεδρεύοντες αὐτὸν θηρεῦσαί τι ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
