Berean Study Bible Paul’s Greeting to the EphesiansPaul’s authority came from God’s call, not personal ambition. Christ appointed him after confronting him on the road to Damascus and sending him to proclaim the gospel, especially among the Gentiles. As an apostle, meaning “one who is sent,” Paul wrote and taught with the authority entrusted to him by the risen Christ. 2Co 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,… To the saints in Ephesus, Paul addressed believers set apart for God in Ephesus, a wealthy and influential city of Asia Minor dominated by commerce, civic life, and the worship of Artemis. Paul had ministered there for an extended period, teaching the church amid a culture marked by idolatry and spiritual darkness. Rev 2:1 To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:… the faithful in Christ Jesus: The Ephesian believers belonged to Christ through faith and were called to remain steadfast in Him. Their union with Christ defined their identity and distinguished them from the surrounding pagan culture. Col 1:2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae:… Grace and peace to you Paul opens with a blessing that joins God’s saving favor with the peace that follows reconciliation with Him. The greeting reflects the unity of Jewish and Gentile believers in Christ and presents salvation as God’s gift rather than human achievement. Rom 1:7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints… from God our Father God receives those redeemed through Christ as His children, bringing them under His care and granting them a promised inheritance. His fatherhood also establishes the church as one household, united to Him and to one another. 2Co 1:2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father… and the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ stands with the Father as the source of grace and peace. Jesus, meaning “Yahweh saves,” is the Savior who became man; Christ is the promised Messiah and King; and Lord affirms His divine authority over the church and all creation. 1Co 1:3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father…
Spiritual BlessingsPaul opens with praise to the one true God, who is both the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ and the source of salvation. The Father and the Son are distinct persons, yet united in the divine work of redemption. 2Co 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,… who has blessed us in Christ God’s favor comes through union with Christ. Believers receive these gifts not by merit, but because Christ has secured them through His saving work. Gal 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing… with every spiritual blessing God has provided all that is necessary for salvation and spiritual life, including forgiveness, adoption, redemption, and the promised inheritance of His people. 2Pe 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need.… in the heavenly realms. These blessings originate in God’s heavenly kingdom and belong to those whose true citizenship is with Christ. Though believers still live in the world, their standing and future are secure in Him. Eph 2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him… For He chose us in Him God’s choice rests in union with Christ, not in human merit or achievement. Believers share in the blessings of salvation because they belong to the Son, through whom God carries out His saving purpose. Jhn 15:16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you. And I appointed you… before the foundation of the world God’s plan of redemption was established before creation. His purpose was never a response to unforeseen human events but proceeded from His eternal knowledge and will. Jhn 17:24 Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me… to be holy and blameless in His presence. Election has a moral purpose: those whom God saves are set apart for Him and called to live with integrity before Him. Holiness reflects separation from sin for God’s service, while blamelessness points to a life acceptable in His sight. Col 1:22 But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body… In love God’s choosing and saving work arise from His love. That love also shapes the life of His people, who are called to live before Him in faithful obedience and love for others. 1Jn 4:10 And love consists in this: not that we loved God… He predestined us Before creation, God determined to save a people for Himself and to shape them into the likeness of His Son. His purpose rests on His sovereign will and grace, not on human merit or achievement. Rom 8:29 For those God foreknew, He also predestined… for adoption as His sons In the Roman world, adoption granted a child the full legal standing, inheritance, and family identity of a natural-born son. Believers receive a new standing before God, becoming members of His household and heirs of His promises. Rom 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery… through Jesus Christ, Christ alone makes this adoption possible through His death and resurrection, removing the barrier of sin and reconciling sinners to the Father. Those united to Him by faith are received as God’s children. Jhn 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.… according to the good pleasure of His will, God’s plan of salvation arose from His own wise and gracious purpose. He freely chose to bring His people into His family, securing their inheritance in Christ. Php 2:13 For it is God who works in you to will and to act… to the praise of His glorious grace, God’s purpose in choosing and adopting believers is that His grace would be recognized and honored. His favor is glorious because it proceeds from His own character and accomplishes salvation for those who could not earn it. 2Co 4:15 All this is for your benefit, so that… which He has freely given us Salvation rests on God’s generous gift, not human merit or obedience to the Law. He grants acceptance and spiritual blessing by grace. 1Co 2:12 We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit… in the Beloved One. The Beloved One is Jesus Christ, the Father’s beloved Son. Believers receive grace through union with Christ, whose sacrifice secures their forgiveness and adoption. Mat 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved… In Him “In Him” emphasizes believers’ union with Jesus Christ, the risen Lord, through whom they receive every saving benefit. 1Co 1:30 It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus… we have redemption God has freed His people from the slavery of sin and its penalty. As Israel was delivered from bondage in Egypt, believers are delivered from the dominion of sin and death. Col 1:14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. through His blood, Redemption was secured through Christ’s blood, shed in His sacrificial death on the cross. His death fulfilled the requirement for atonement and established the new covenant. Heb 9:12 He did not enter by the blood of goats and calves,… the forgiveness of our trespasses, God removes the guilt of sin and restores those who trust in Christ to fellowship with Himself. Forgiveness rests on Christ’s completed work rather than human merit. Col 2:13 When you were dead in your trespasses, God made you alive… according to the riches of His grace Redemption and forgiveness flow from God’s abundant, undeserved favor. According to the riches of His grace, He provides all who are saved through Christ with sufficient grace. Eph 2:7 in order that in the coming ages… that He lavished on us God’s grace was poured out freely and abundantly through Christ’s redemption. It is not measured by human merit or limited by past sin, but displays God’s generous purpose to forgive and adopt those who belong to His Son. Tit 3:6 This is the Spirit He poured out on us abundantly… with all wisdom God’s saving work was carried out according to His perfect wisdom. The redemption accomplished in Christ was not an afterthought but part of God’s eternal plan to unite all things under His authority. Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you… and understanding. God acted with complete insight into humanity’s need, the cost of sin, and the means by which He would bring salvation. His grace reveals both His mercy toward sinners and His wise purpose for the future. Col 1:9 we have not stopped praying for you and asking God… And He has made known to us the mystery of His will God has revealed His long-hidden plan of redemption through Christ. What was once concealed is now known to believers: Jews and Gentiles are brought into one people through the Messiah. Col 1:26-27 the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations… according to His good pleasure, This revelation comes from God’s gracious and sovereign purpose, not from human merit. He freely chose to make His saving plan known. Php 2:13 For it is God who works in you to will and to act… which He purposed in Christ God’s eternal purpose is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, through whom salvation is accomplished and all things will ultimately be brought under His rule. Eph 3:11 according to the eternal purpose… as a plan for the fullness of time, God’s purpose unfolds according to His appointed timetable, moving history toward the completion He has determined. The sending of the Son, His death and resurrection, and the future consummation of His kingdom all belong to this plan. Gal 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son,… to bring all things in heaven and on earth together in Christ. Through Christ, God will restore the created order damaged by sin and bring every realm under His rightful rule. Believers already share in this reconciliation, while its full expression awaits Christ’s return, when He establishes a new heaven and new earth. Col 1:20 and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things,… In Him we were also chosen as God’s own, Believers are brought into God’s covenant people through union with Christ, receiving the inheritance promised to those who belong to Him. 1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood… having been predestined Their salvation rests in God’s eternal purpose, established before human response or accomplishment. Rom 8:29-30 For those God foreknew, He also predestined… according to the plan of Him God’s redemptive work unfolds according to His settled design, centered on Christ and extending through all history. Act 2:23 He was delivered up by God’s set plan and foreknowledge,… who works out everything Nothing ultimately escapes His sovereign rule; He directs events toward the fulfillment of His purposes. Dan 4:35 All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing… by the counsel of His will, His actions proceed from perfect wisdom and authority, securing the future He has determined for His people. Isa 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times… in order that we, God’s purpose in redeeming His people includes the response their salvation brings to Him. “We” refers especially to Paul and the Jewish believers who received the Messiah before the Gentiles were brought into the church. Col 1:12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share… who were the first to hope in Christ, Israel had long awaited the promised Messiah, and the first Christians were Jews who recognized Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promise. Their hope rested in Christ’s completed work and the certainty of His kingdom. Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power… would be for the praise of His glory. Their salvation was meant to display God’s grace, faithfulness, and power. The church exists as a witness that God accomplishes His purposes through Christ. Php 1:11 filled with the fruit of righteousness… And in Him, “And in him” emphasizes believers’ union with Christ. Through faith, they share in the blessings secured by his redemptive work, and their standing before God rests on their relationship with the risen Lord. Col 2:6-7 Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord,… having heard and believed Salvation follows hearing God’s message and responding in faith. Belief involves trusting Christ and receiving the salvation He accomplished. Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word… the word of truth— God’s message is reliable and fully reveals His purpose to save sinners through His Son. It stands against human error and every false claim about God and salvation. Col 1:5 the faith and love proceeding from the hope stored up… the gospel of your salvation— “The gospel of your salvation” is the good news that Christ died for sins, was buried, and rose again. Through Him, all who believe are forgiven and delivered from sin’s judgment. 1Co 15:1-2 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel… you were sealed God marked believers as His own and secured them for the future inheritance He has promised. The seal confirms their belonging to Christ and God’s continuing claim upon them. 2Co 1:22 placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit… with the promised Holy Spirit, The promised Holy Spirit fulfills God’s promise to give His people new life and to remain with them. He guides, strengthens, and prepares believers for the full redemption still to come. Act 2:33 Exalted, then, to the right hand of God,… who is the pledge of our inheritance The Holy Spirit is God’s guarantee that believers will receive the full inheritance promised in Christ. His indwelling presence gives present assurance of salvation and anticipates the eternal life, resurrection, and glory still to come. 2Co 5:5 And it is God who has prepared us for this very purpose… until the redemption of those who are God’s possession, Believers belong to God, having been purchased through Christ’s sacrifice. Their redemption began with forgiveness and new life, but it will be completed when Christ returns and they are freed forever from sin, death, and corruption. Tit 2:14 He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness… to the praise of His glory. God’s work of choosing, redeeming, sealing, and preserving His people displays His holiness, grace, and power. The salvation of believers ultimately brings honor and glory to Him. Php 1:11 filled with the fruit of righteousness…
Spiritual WisdomPaul’s prayer follows his praise for God’s saving work in Christ. The Ephesians’ election, adoption, redemption, and sealing by the Holy Spirit provided the foundation for his thanksgiving and intercession. Col 1:9 we have not stopped praying for you and asking God… ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus Reports of the believers’ steadfast trust in Christ had reached Paul. Their faith recognized Jesus not merely as a teacher or example but as the risen Lord and Savior. Phm 1:5 because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus… and your love for all the saints, Their faith was evident in practical love for fellow believers. This shared devotion united Jewish and Gentile Christians in one church and displayed the new life they possessed in Christ. Heb 6:10 For God is not unjust. He will not forget your work… I have not stopped giving thanks for you, Paul’s continual gratitude arose from the genuine faith and love evident among the Ephesian believers. Ephesus was a prominent city in Asia Minor where Paul had ministered extensively and where a strong church had been established amid pagan worship and spiritual opposition. Their perseverance testified to God’s work among them and strengthened Paul’s bond with the congregation. Col 1:3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,… remembering you in my prayers, Paul regularly brought the Ephesian church before God, seeking their continued spiritual growth and understanding of their calling in Christ. Though separated from them, he remained actively concerned for their faith, unity, and endurance. His prayers reflect the mutual care that joined the early churches despite distance and hardship. Phm 1:4 I always thank my God, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, God the Father is identified as the God whom the incarnate Son worshiped and obeyed during His earthly ministry. Jesus is fully divine, yet in His humanity He submitted to the Father’s will, revealing the distinct persons and perfect unity within the Trinity. 2Co 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,… the glorious Father, The Father possesses supreme majesty, holiness, and authority. His glory sets Him above creation, yet He relates personally to His people as a Father who receives, guides, and cares for them. Php 2:11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,… may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation Paul prays for the Holy Spirit to grant believers growing discernment and clear understanding of God’s revealed truth. Such wisdom enables them to recognize God’s purposes and live in keeping with them. Isa 11:2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom… in your knowledge of Him. The goal is a deeper, personal knowledge of God through Christ. This knowledge grows as believers receive His Word, trust His promises, and understand more fully the salvation and calling they have received. 2Pe 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior… I ask that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, The heart is the inner person, including understanding, will, and affections. Paul asks God to give believers spiritual sight so they may perceive the realities of salvation and God’s purpose beyond what natural understanding can grasp. Act 26:18 open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness… so that you may know the hope of His calling, God’s calling brings a certain hope grounded in His promise to save, preserve, and glorify His people. It looks forward to the complete fulfillment of salvation when Christ returns. Eph 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called… the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, God regards His redeemed people as His own inheritance. Their future resurrection, holiness, and life in His kingdom will display the wealth of His grace and the glory of His saving work. Col 1:12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share… and the surpassing greatness of His power God’s power is beyond all human measure and is displayed in creation, His rule over nations, His mighty acts in Israel’s history, and above all in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Nothing can hinder His purpose or limit His authority. 2Co 4:7 Now we have this treasure in jars of clay… to us who believe. God directs this power toward those who trust in Christ. Believers do not rely on human strength to endure trials, resist sin, or serve Him; they depend on the power God supplies through faith. Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power… These are in accordance with the working of His mighty strength, God’s power is active and effective, accomplishing all He intends. The same strength that raised Christ from the dead is at work in His people, securing their salvation and enabling them to live according to His calling. Eph 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. which He exerted in Christ God’s power was decisively displayed in the work of Jesus Christ, accomplishing what no human effort could achieve. The same divine power sustains all who belong to Christ and guarantees the fulfillment of God’s purposes. Act 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit… when He raised Him from the dead Jesus’ bodily resurrection marked His victory over sin, death, and the grave. It confirmed His identity as the Son of God and established the certainty of resurrection life for His people. Act 13:30 But God raised Him from the dead, and seated Him at His right hand Following His resurrection and ascension, Christ received the place of highest honor and authority beside the Father. He reigns as Lord and serves as the faithful mediator for His people. Mrk 16:19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up… in the heavenly realms, Christ’s authority extends over the unseen spiritual order as well as the visible world. From heaven He rules above every opposing power and will bring all things under His righteous reign. Eph 2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him… far above all rule and authority, Christ has been exalted over every earthly government and every spiritual power, whether angelic or demonic. In a world that feared unseen forces and imperial authority, believers were assured that no power stands outside His rule. 1Co 15:24 Then the end will come, when He hands over the kingdom… power and dominion, His authority extends over every force that claims influence over human life, including the spiritual powers associated with Ephesus’s widespread magic and pagan worship. 1Ti 6:16 He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light.… and every name that is named, No deity, ruler, spiritual being, or title of honor rivals the name and authority of Christ. His supremacy reaches beyond the powers people feared, served, or invoked. Php 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place… not only in the present age Christ reigns now, amid sin, opposition, and spiritual conflict. His authority is not diminished by the continuing presence of evil in the world. Gal 1:4 who gave Himself for our sins to rescue us… but also in the one to come. His reign will remain unquestioned in the future kingdom, when all opposition is finally removed and His authority is openly acknowledged throughout creation. Mrk 10:30 will fail to receive a hundredfold… And God put everything under His feet The Father has subjected every power, authority, and enemy to the risen Christ. What began with humanity’s intended rule over creation finds its perfect fulfillment in Jesus, the true and obedient Man. His resurrection and exaltation establish His victory over sin, death, Satan, and every opposing spiritual power, though the final public submission of all things awaits His return. Psa 8:6 You made him ruler of the works of Your hands;… and made Him head over everything Christ rules over all creation as the exalted Lord. Nothing in heaven or earth lies outside His authority. His rule is not temporary or limited to religious matters; He directs history, sustains all things, and possesses final authority over every ruler, nation, and spiritual power. Col 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church;… for the church, Christ exercises His universal authority for the good of His people. The church belongs to Him as His body, receiving life, direction, protection, and growth from its Head. His rule ensures that God’s purpose for the church will be accomplished despite opposition in the world. Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife… which is His body, The Church is united to Christ as a living body is united to its head. Believers have differing gifts and responsibilities, yet all belong to Him and serve together under His authority. Col 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church;… the fullness of Him The Church is Christ’s appointed instrument for displaying His life, power, and work in the world. As His body and the fullness of Him, the Church is equipped to embody His character and carry out His purposes through the people He has redeemed. Col 2:9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity… who fills all in all. The risen Christ rules over every realm and is actively present throughout His creation. Nothing lies outside His authority, and He will bring all things into their proper place under His lordship. Eph 4:10 He who descended is the very One who ascended above all… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
