1
On the
first [day]
of the
week,
very early
in the morning,
[the women] came
to
the
tomb,
bringing
[the] spices
they had prepared.
1
Τῇ
δὲ
μιᾷ

μνῆμα
ἦλθον
φέρουσαι

2
They found
the
stone
rolled away
from
the
tomb,
2
εὗρον
δὲ
τὸν
λίθον
ἀποκεκυλισμένον
ἀπὸ
τοῦ
μνημείου
3
but
when they entered,
they did not find
the
body
of the
Lord
Jesus.
3
εἰσελθοῦσαι
δὲ
οὐχ
εὗρον
τὸ
σῶμα
τοῦ
Κυρίου
Ἰησοῦ
4
While
they
were puzzling
over
this,
suddenly
two
men
in
radiant
apparel
stood beside
them.
4
καὶ
ἐγένετο
ἐν
τῷ
ἀπορεῖσθαι
αὐτὰς
περὶ
τούτου
καὶ
ἰδοὺ
ἄνδρες
δύο
ἐπέστησαν
αὐταῖς
ἐν
ἐσθῆτι
ἀστραπτούσῃ
5
As
[the women]
bowed
[their]
faces
to
the
ground
in terror,
[the two men] asked
them,
“Why
do you look for
the
living
among
the
dead?
5
ἐμφόβων
δὲ
γενομένων
αὐτῶν
καὶ
κλινουσῶν
τὰ
πρόσωπα
εἰς
τὴν
γῆν
εἶπαν
πρὸς
αὐτάς
Τί
ζητεῖτε
τὸν
ζῶντα
μετὰ
τῶν
νεκρῶν
6
He is
not
here;
He has risen!
Remember
how
He told
you
while He was
still
in
Galilee:
6
οὐκ
ἔστιν
ὧδε
ἀλλὰ
ἠγέρθη
μνήσθητε
ὡς
ἐλάλησεν
ὑμῖν
ἔτι
ὢν
ἐν
τῇ
Γαλιλαίᾳ
7
‘The
Son
of Man
must
be delivered
into
[the] hands
of sinful
men,
and
be crucified,
and
on the
third
day
rise again.’”
7
λέγων
Τὸν
Υἱὸν
τοῦ
ἀνθρώπου
ὅτι
δεῖ
παραδοθῆναι
εἰς
χεῖρας
ἀνθρώπων
ἁμαρτωλῶν
καὶ
σταυρωθῆναι
καὶ
τῇ
τρίτῃ
ἡμέρᾳ
ἀναστῆναι
8
Then
they remembered
His
words.
8
Καὶ
ἐμνήσθησαν
τῶν
ῥημάτων
αὐτοῦ
9
And
when they returned
from
the
tomb,
they reported
all
these things
to the
eleven
and
to all
the
others.
9
καὶ

ἀπὸ
τοῦ
μνημείου
ἀπήγγειλαν
ταῦτα
πάντα
τοῖς
ἕνδεκα
καὶ
πᾶσιν
τοῖς
λοιποῖς
10
It was
Mary
Magdalene,
Joanna,
Mary
the [mother]
of James,
and
the
other women
with
them
[who] told
[this]
to
the
apostles.
10
ἦσαν
δὲ
ἡ
Μαγδαληνὴ
Μαρία
καὶ
Ἰωάννα
καὶ
Μαρία
ἡ
Ἰακώβου
καὶ
αἱ
λοιπαὶ
σὺν
αὐταῖς
ἔλεγον
πρὸς
τοὺς
ἀποστόλους
ταῦτα
11
But
their
words
seemed
like
nonsense
to
them,
and
they did not believe
[the women].
11
καὶ
ἐφάνησαν
ἐνώπιον
αὐτῶν
ὡσεὶ
λῆρος
τὰ
ῥήματα
ταῦτα
καὶ
ἠπίστουν
αὐταῖς
12
Peter,
however,
got up
[and] ran
to
the
tomb.
And [after]
bending down
[and] seeing
only
the
linen cloths,
he went away
wondering
to
himself
what
had happened.
12
Ὁ

πρὸς
αὑτὸν
θαυμάζων
τὸ
γεγονός
13
That
same
day
two
of
them
were
going
to
a village
called
Emmaus,
about seven miles
from
Jerusalem.
13
Καὶ
ἰδοὺ
δύο
ἐξ
αὐτῶν
ἐν
αὐτῇ
τῇ
ἡμέρᾳ
ἦσαν
πορευόμενοι
εἰς
κώμην
ἀπέχουσαν
σταδίους
ἑξήκοντα
ἀπὸ
Ἰερουσαλήμ
ᾗ
ὄνομα
Ἐμμαοῦς
14
They
were talking
with
each other
about
everything
that
had happened.
14
καὶ
αὐτοὶ
ὡμίλουν
πρὸς
ἀλλήλους
περὶ
πάντων
τῶν
συμβεβηκότων
τούτων
15
And
as
they
talked
and
deliberated,
Jesus
Himself
came up
[and] walked along
with them.
15
καὶ
ἐγένετο
ἐν
τῷ
ὁμιλεῖν
αὐτοὺς
καὶ
συζητεῖν
καὶ
αὐτὸς
Ἰησοῦς
ἐγγίσας
συνεπορεύετο
αὐτοῖς
16
But
their
eyes
were kept
from recognizing
Him.
16
οἱ
δὲ
ὀφθαλμοὶ
αὐτῶν
ἐκρατοῦντο
τοῦ
μὴ
ἐπιγνῶναι
αὐτόν
17
He asked
them,
“What
are you discussing so intently
as you walk along?”
They stood still,
with sadness on their faces.
17
Εἶπεν
δὲ
πρὸς
αὐτούς
Τίνες
οἱ
λόγοι
οὗτοι
οὓς
ἀντιβάλλετε
πρὸς
ἀλλήλους
περιπατοῦντες
Καὶ
ἐστάθησαν
σκυθρωποί
18
One [of them],
named
Cleopas,
asked
Him,
“{Are} You
the only
visitor
to Jerusalem
[who]
{does} not
know
the things
that have happened
[there]
in
recent
days?”
18
ἀποκριθεὶς
δὲ
εἷς
ὀνόματι
Κλεοπᾶς
εἶπεν
πρὸς
αὐτόν
Σὺ

Ἰερουσαλὴμ
καὶ
οὐκ
ἔγνως
τὰ
γενόμενα
ἐν
αὐτῇ
ἐν
ταῖς
ἡμέραις
ταύταις
19
“What things?”
He asked.
“The events
involving
Jesus
of
Nazareth,”
they answered.
“[This] man
was
a prophet,
powerful
in
speech
and
action
before
God
and
all
the
people.
19
Καὶ
εἶπεν
αὐτοῖς
Ποῖα

αὐτῷ
Τὰ
περὶ
Ἰησοῦ
τοῦ
Ναζαρηνοῦ
ὃς
ἐγένετο
ἀνὴρ
προφήτης
δυνατὸς
ἐν
ἔργῳ
καὶ
λόγῳ
ἐναντίον
τοῦ
Θεοῦ
καὶ
παντὸς
τοῦ
λαοῦ
20
[Our]
chief priests
and
rulers
delivered Him up
to
[the] sentence
of death,
and
they crucified
Him.
20
ὅπως
τε
παρέδωκαν
αὐτὸν
οἱ
ἀρχιερεῖς
καὶ
οἱ
ἄρχοντες
ἡμῶν
εἰς
κρίμα
θανάτου
καὶ
ἐσταύρωσαν
αὐτόν
21
But
we
were hoping
He
was
the [One who]
would
redeem
Israel.
And
besides
all
[this],
[it]
is
[the] third
day
since
these things
took place.
21
ἡμεῖς
δὲ
ἠλπίζομεν
ὅτι
αὐτός

22
Furthermore,
some
of
our
women
amazed
us.
They were
at
the
tomb
early this morning,
22
Ἀλλὰ
καὶ
γυναῖκές
τινες
ἐξ
ἡμῶν
ἐξέστησαν
ἡμᾶς
γενόμεναι
ὀρθριναὶ
ἐπὶ
τὸ
μνημεῖον
23
but
they did not find
His
body.
They came
[and] told [us]
they had seen
a vision
of angels
who
said that
[Jesus]
was alive.
23
καὶ
μὴ

σῶμα
αὐτοῦ
ἦλθον
λέγουσαι
καὶ
ὀπτασίαν
ἀγγέλων
ἑωρακέναι
οἳ

αὐτὸν

24
Then
some
of our companions
went
to
the
tomb
and
found [it]
just
as
the
women
had described.
But
Him
they did not see.”
24
καὶ
ἀπῆλθόν
τινες
τῶν
σὺν
ἡμῖν
ἐπὶ
τὸ
μνημεῖον
καὶ
εὗρον
οὕτως
καθὼς
καὶ
αἱ
γυναῖκες
εἶπον
αὐτὸν
δὲ
οὐκ
εἶδον
25
Then
[Jesus]
said
to
them,
“O
foolish [ones],
[how] slow
are your hearts
to believe
all
that
the
prophets
have spoken.
25
Καὶ
αὐτὸς
εἶπεν
πρὸς
αὐτούς
Ὦ
ἀνόητοι
καὶ
βραδεῖς
τῇ
καρδίᾳ
τοῦ
πιστεύειν
ἐπὶ
πᾶσιν
οἷς
ἐλάλησαν
οἱ
προφῆται
26
Was it not necessary for
the
Christ
to suffer
these things
and then
to enter
His
glory?”
26
οὐχὶ
ταῦτα
ἔδει
παθεῖν
τὸν
Χριστὸν
καὶ
εἰσελθεῖν
εἰς
τὴν
δόξαν
αὐτοῦ
27
And
beginning
with
Moses
and
all
the
Prophets,
He explained
to them
what [ was written ]
in
all
the
Scriptures
about
Himself.
27
καὶ
ἀρξάμενος
ἀπὸ
Μωϋσέως
καὶ
ἀπὸ
πάντων
τῶν
προφητῶν
διερμήνευσεν
αὐτοῖς
ἐν
πάσαις
ταῖς
γραφαῖς
τὰ
περὶ
ἑαυτοῦ
28
As
they approached
the
village
where
they were headed,
He
seemed
to be going
farther.
28
Καὶ
ἤγγισαν
εἰς
τὴν
κώμην
οὗ
ἐπορεύοντο
καὶ
αὐτὸς
προσεποιήσατο
πορρώτερον
πορεύεσθαι
29
But
they pleaded with Him,
“Stay
with
us,
for
it is
nearly
evening
and
the
day
is almost over.”
So
He went in
to stay
with
them.
29
καὶ
παρεβιάσαντο
αὐτὸν
λέγοντες
Μεῖνον
μεθ’
ἡμῶν
ὅτι
πρὸς
ἑσπέραν
ἐστὶν
καὶ
κέκλικεν
ἤδη
ἡ
ἡμέρα
Καὶ
εἰσῆλθεν
τοῦ
μεῖναι
σὺν
αὐτοῖς
30
While
He
was reclining [at the table]
with
them,
He took
bread,
spoke a blessing
and
broke [it],
[and] gave [it]
to them.
30
καὶ
ἐγένετο
ἐν
τῷ
κατακλιθῆναι
αὐτὸν
μετ’
αὐτῶν
λαβὼν
τὸν
ἄρτον
εὐλόγησεν
καὶ
κλάσας
ἐπεδίδου
αὐτοῖς
31
Then
their
eyes
were opened
and
they recognized
[Jesus]—
and
He
disappeared
from
[their sight].
31
αὐτῶν
δὲ
διηνοίχθησαν
οἱ
ὀφθαλμοὶ
καὶ
ἐπέγνωσαν
αὐτόν
καὶ
αὐτὸς
ἄφαντος
ἐγένετο
ἀπ’
αὐτῶν
32
They asked
one another,
“Were
not
our
hearts
burning
within
us
as
He spoke
with us
on
the
road
[and]
opened
the
Scriptures
to us?”
32
Καὶ
εἶπαν
πρὸς
ἀλλήλους
Οὐχὶ

ὡς
διήνοιγεν
ἡμῖν
τὰς
γραφάς
33
And
they got up
[that] very
hour
[and] returned
to
Jerusalem.
[There]
they found
the
Eleven
and
those
with
them,
gathered together
33
Καὶ
ἀναστάντες
αὐτῇ
τῇ
ὥρᾳ
ὑπέστρεψαν
εἰς
Ἰερουσαλήμ
καὶ
εὗρον
ἠθροισμένους
τοὺς
ἕνδεκα
καὶ
τοὺς
σὺν
αὐτοῖς
34
[and] saying,
“The
Lord
has indeed risen,
and
He has appeared
to Simon!”
34
λέγοντας
ὅτι
Ὄντως
ἠγέρθη
ὁ
Κύριος
καὶ
ὤφθη
Σίμωνι
35
Then
[the two]
told
what had happened
on
the
road,
and
how
they
had recognized [Jesus]
in
the
breaking
of the
bread.
35
Καὶ
αὐτοὶ
ἐξηγοῦντο
τὰ
ἐν
τῇ
ὁδῷ
καὶ
ὡς
ἐγνώσθη
αὐτοῖς
ἐν
τῇ
κλάσει
τοῦ
ἄρτου
36
While
they
were describing
these [events],
[Jesus] Himself
stood
among
them
and
said,
“Peace [be]
with you.”
36
Ταῦτα
δὲ
αὐτῶν
λαλούντων
αὐτὸς
ἔστη
ἐν
μέσῳ
αὐτῶν
καὶ
λέγει
αὐτοῖς
Εἰρήνη
ὑμῖν
37
But
they were startled
and
frightened,
thinking
they had seen
a spirit.
37
πτοηθέντες
δὲ
καὶ
ἔμφοβοι
γενόμενοι
ἐδόκουν

θεωρεῖν
38
“Why
are you
troubled,”
[Jesus] asked,
“and
why
{do} doubts
arise
in
your
hearts?
38
Καὶ
εἶπεν
αὐτοῖς
Τί

ἀναβαίνουσιν
ἐν
τῇ
καρδίᾳ

39
Look at
My
hands
and
My
feet.
It is
I
Myself.
Touch
Me
and
see—
for
a spirit
{does} not
have
flesh
and
bones,
as
you see
I
have.”
39

ὅτι

ἔχοντα
40
And [when]
He had said
this,
He showed
them
[His]
hands
and
feet.
40
καὶ
τοῦτο
εἰπὼν
ἔδειξεν
αὐτοῖς
τὰς
χεῖρας
καὶ
τοὺς
πόδας
41
While
they
were still in disbelief
because of
[their]
joy
and
amazement,
He asked
them,
“Do you have
anything
here
to eat?”
41
Ἔτι
δὲ
ἀπιστούντων
αὐτῶν
ἀπὸ
τῆς
χαρᾶς
καὶ
θαυμαζόντων
εἶπεν
αὐτοῖς
Ἔχετέ

42
So
they gave
Him
a piece
of broiled
fish,
42
οἱ
δὲ
ἐπέδωκαν
αὐτῷ
ἰχθύος
ὀπτοῦ
μέρος
43
and
He took [it]
[and] ate [it]
in front of
them.
43
καὶ
λαβὼν
ἐνώπιον
αὐτῶν
ἔφαγεν
44
[Jesus] said
to
them,
“These [are]
the
words

to
you
while I was
still
with
you:
Everything
must
be fulfilled
that [is]
written
about
Me
in
the
Law
of Moses,
the
