Berean Study Bible The Destroyers of Jerusalem DestroyedThe Lord announces a future time of decisive intervention in Jerusalem. His day brings judgment upon rebellion and establishes His rule over the nations, fulfilling His purpose to defeat evil and deliver His people. Jol 2:1 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm… when your plunder will be divided in your presence. Jerusalem will suffer the humiliation of conquest as invading forces seize and divide its possessions openly. The coming siege reveals the severity of divine judgment, yet it also sets the stage for the Lord’s deliverance and final victory. Oba 1:11 On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off… For I will gather all the nations for battle against Jerusalem, God will bring the nations into a final conflict against Jerusalem, exercising sovereign control even over hostile powers. Earlier invasions by Babylon and Rome foreshadow the devastation, but this gathering involves the nations in a climactic assault. Jol 3:2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down… and the city will be captured, Jerusalem will fall to its enemies, and its inhabitants will experience the bitter consequences of siege and conquest. Jer 39:2 And on the ninth day of the fourth month,… the houses looted, Private homes will be plundered, showing the complete collapse of security and order within the city. Isa 13:16 Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes… and the women ravished. The invaders’ violence will include grievous abuses against women, revealing the cruelty that accompanies the city’s capture. Lam 5:11 Women have been ravished in Zion, virgins in the cities… Half of the city will go into exile, Many survivors will be driven from Jerusalem, recalling earlier deportations in Israel’s history while marking a severe future judgment. 2Ki 25:11 Then Nebuzaradan carried into exile the people… but the rest of the people will not be removed from the city. A portion of Jerusalem’s people will remain, preserving a remnant in the city until the Lord intervenes and establishes His reign. Zec 2:4-5 Run and tell that young man: ‘Jerusalem will be a city… Then the LORD will go out God will personally intervene in the future crisis surrounding Jerusalem, acting openly and decisively on behalf of His people. Psa 68:7-8 O God, when You went out before Your people,… to fight against those nations, The armies gathered against Jerusalem will face the Lord Himself. Their opposition to the city becomes rebellion against God’s rule, and their defeat will establish His judgment over the nations. Exo 14:25 He caused their chariot wheels to wobble,… as He fights in the day of battle. The Lord will act as the divine warrior, just as He delivered Israel in earlier battles. His victory will be complete, ending the assault on Jerusalem and demonstrating His sovereign authority over all evil. Exo 15:3 The LORD is a warrior, the LORD is His name. On that day God will intervene openly in history, bringing judgment on His enemies and deliverance for His people. Jol 2:31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood… His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, The Lord’s personal arrival will occur on the ridge east of Jerusalem, the same place from which Jesus ascended and where He often prayed during His earthly ministry. Act 1:11-12 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here”… east of Jerusalem, Its position overlooking the city connects the Lord’s return directly with Jerusalem, the center of the conflict and restoration described in this chapter. Ezk 11:23 And the glory of the LORD rose up from within the city… and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, His coming will be accompanied by a literal, earth-changing act that demonstrates His authority over creation and opens an escape route for Jerusalem’s survivors. Mic 1:4 The mountains will melt beneath Him,… forming a great valley, The new valley will provide passage for those fleeing the destruction described in the surrounding prophecy. Psa 104:8 the mountains rose and the valleys sank… with half the mountain moving to the north and half to the south. The mountain’s division will permanently alter the landscape around Jerusalem and mark the decisive beginning of the Lord’s reign. Exo 14:21-22 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,… You will flee by My mountain valley, The valley formed by the splitting of the Mount of Olives will provide a route of escape for Jerusalem’s inhabitants as the Lord intervenes in judgment and deliverance. Isa 40:3-4 A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD… for it will extend to Azal. Its reach to Azal, a place near Jerusalem whose precise location is uncertain, emphasizes the completeness of the way of escape God provides. Isa 49:11 I will turn all My mountains into roads,… You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. The devastating earthquake during Uzziah’s reign was remembered for generations, and the comparison portrays the urgency and terror of this future event. Amo 1:1 These are the words of Amos, who was among the… Then the LORD my God will come, The Lord Himself will appear openly to judge His enemies and establish His reign. Isa 35:4 Say to those with anxious hearts: “Be strong, do not fear!… and all the holy ones with Him. He will come with His heavenly host, displaying His authority, glory, and final victory. Deu 33:2 He said: “The LORD came from Sinai and dawned… On that day The Day of the Lord brings God’s final intervention in Jerusalem and the nations, joining judgment on rebellion with deliverance for His people. Jol 3:18 And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine… there will be no light, Creation itself will be altered under God’s direct rule, with ordinary patterns of light and darkness disrupted. Exo 10:21-23 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand”… no cold or frost. The changed conditions point to an exceptional day unlike any in human experience, anticipating the renewal that follows the Lord’s victory. Job 38:29-30 From whose womb does the ice emerge? Who gives birth?… It will be a unique day “It will be a unique day,” unlike any other in history, marking the LORD’s decisive intervention in the final conflict surrounding Jerusalem and the establishment of His reign. Deu 29:29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God,… without day or night; The phrase “without day or night” indicates that the normal patterns of light and darkness will be altered as creation responds to the LORD’s presence. Rev 22:5 There will be no more night in the city.… but when evening comes, there will be light. At the time darkness would ordinarily fall, God will provide light, signaling the end of judgment’s darkness and the beginning of His visible rule. Isa 60:19-20 No longer will the sun be your light by day,… And on that day God’s future kingdom will be openly established after His judgment of the nations. Zep 1:14 The great Day of the LORD is near—near and coming quickly.… the LORD will become King over all the earth— His rule will extend over every nation, bringing the world’s governments and peoples under His direct authority. Psa 47:2 How awesome is the LORD Most High, the great King… the LORD alone, The phrase “the LORD alone” declares that all false worship and rival claims to deity will be removed. Deu 4:35 You were shown these things so that you would know… and His name alone. The LORD’s holiness, authority, and rightful claim to worship will be universally recognized. Psa 148:13 Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name alone… All the land from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem will be turned into a plain, Geba lay north of Jerusalem in Benjamin, while Rimmon marked the southern reaches of Judah. The changed terrain describes a real act of divine judgment and restoration, lowering the surrounding highlands while setting Jerusalem apart. Isa 40:4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill… but Jerusalem will be raised up and will remain in her place, Jerusalem will stand secure and exalted in the land, no longer threatened by the nations that once surrounded her. Its fixed position emphasizes the permanence of the city under the Lord’s rule. Isa 2:2-3 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD… from the Benjamin Gate to the site of the First Gate to the Corner Gate, These landmarks trace Jerusalem’s northern and western boundaries, showing that the whole city will be restored and inhabited within its proper limits. Its gates and walls will again serve a secure population. Jer 37:13 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin,… and from the Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses. The Tower of Hananel represented the northern defenses of the city, while the royal winepresses lay near its southern area. Together they describe Jerusalem from end to end as protected, productive, and fully established. Jer 31:38 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD,… People will live there, Jerusalem, long marked by siege, exile, and destruction, will again be fully inhabited after the Lord’s victory over the nations. The city’s restoration will reverse the desolation experienced under Babylon and later Rome. Amo 9:14 I will restore My people Israel from captivity;… and never again will there be an utter destruction. The promise looks beyond Jerusalem’s repeated historical devastations to a future in which the city will no longer face conquest or ruin. God’s judgment will have removed its enemies and established His rule. Jer 31:40 The whole valley of the dead bodies and ashes,… So Jerusalem will dwell securely. Jerusalem’s security will rest on the Lord’s presence and kingship. In the age described in Zechariah 14, the city will be protected from attack and will enjoy enduring peace under the Messiah. Jer 33:16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell… And this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes all the peoples who have warred against Jerusalem: At the Lord’s return, the nations that gather against Jerusalem will face direct divine judgment. Jerusalem’s central place in God’s covenant purposes makes hostility toward it an act of rebellion against the King who defends His people. 2Ki 19:35 And that very night the angel of the LORD went out… Their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, The judgment is immediate, supernatural, and inescapable. Those who came in strength to overthrow Jerusalem will be destroyed where they stand. Exo 9:10-11 So they took soot from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh.… their eyes will rot in their sockets, The invaders will lose the ability to see or act against the city. Their blindness reflects the ruin of those who oppose God’s revealed purpose. Lev 26:16 then this is what I will do to you: I will bring upon you… and their tongues will rot in their mouths. The mouths that joined in threats, boasts, and rebellion will be silenced. The plague displays the Lord’s authority over the nations and His decisive protection of Jerusalem. Ezk 3:26 I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth… On that day The Day of the LORD will bring God’s decisive intervention in the conflict surrounding Jerusalem. The nations gathered against the city will face judgment as the LORD acts to defend His people and establish His rule. Zec 12:3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth… a great panic from the LORD will come upon them, God will overthrow the confidence and coordination of the invading forces. Their fear will not arise merely from battlefield conditions but from the Lord’s judgment upon those opposing Him. Jos 10:10 And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel,… so that each will seize the hand of another, The panic will destroy unity among the attackers. Men who came as allies will turn on one another as confusion spreads through their ranks. 1Sa 14:20 Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched… and the hand of one will rise against the other. The invading armies will become instruments of their own defeat. Their internal violence will display the futility of resisting the Lord and the certainty of His judgment. Ezk 38:21 And I will summon a sword against Gog on all My mountains,… Judah will also fight at Jerusalem, Judah joins in the defense of Jerusalem when the surrounding nations attack. As the tribe from which Israel’s kings came and from which the Messiah descended, Judah’s participation portrays the covenant people acting together under God’s deliverance. Zec 12:5-8 Then the leaders of Judah will say in their hearts:… and the wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected— The armies that come to plunder Jerusalem are defeated, and their possessions become spoil for Judah and Jerusalem. The reversal demonstrates God’s judgment on the nations that gather against His city. Hag 2:7-8 I will shake all the nations, and they will come… gold, silver, and apparel in great abundance. The captured wealth includes precious metals and costly garments, common marks of royal and military prosperity. Its abundance emphasizes the completeness of the victory and the downfall of Jerusalem’s enemies. Exo 12:35-36 Furthermore, the Israelites acted on Moses’ word… And a similar plague will strike God’s judgment on the armies gathered against Jerusalem extends beyond the soldiers themselves. The plague that destroys the hostile forces also demonstrates that no military coalition can withstand the Lord’s intervention on behalf of His city. 1Sa 6:4-5 “What guilt offering should we send back to Him?”… the horses and mules, camels and donkeys, The animals supporting the invading armies will also perish. These creatures supplied transportation, trade, agriculture, and military movement; horses were associated with war, while mules, camels, and donkeys were crucial for trade and daily life. Their loss removes the nations’ ability to sustain their campaign. 2Ki 7:7 Thus the Arameans had arisen and fled at twilight… and all the animals in those camps. Every resource within the camps of the nations that come against Jerusalem falls under the judgment. The devastation leaves the armies defeated and powerless, revealing the completeness of God’s victory over those who come against Jerusalem. Isa 37:36 Then the angel of the LORD struck down 185,000 men…
All Nations Will Worship the KingAfter the Lord’s judgment on the armies gathered against Jerusalem, those left from the hostile nations will live under His rule. Former enemies of Israel will acknowledge the God they opposed and join in the worship centered in Jerusalem. Isa 66:18-20 “And I, knowing their deeds and thoughts,… will go up year after year The nations will make an annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem, showing their continuing submission to the Lord’s authority rather than a temporary response to judgment. 1Sa 1:3 Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city… to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, God will be openly recognized as the rightful King over every nation, reigning with absolute authority over earthly powers and heavenly armies. Psa 24:7-10 Lift up your heads, O gates! Be lifted up, O ancient doors,… and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. This feast, which remembers God’s protection and provision during Israel’s wilderness years, will become a worldwide celebration of His faithfulness, rule, and presence among His people. Lev 23:39-43 On the fifteenth day of the seventh month,… And should any of the families of the earth not go up to Jerusalem During the Messiah’s reign, Jerusalem will stand as the center of worship for every nation. No people group will be excluded from the call to acknowledge the God of Israel, and the nations will be accountable for their response. Isa 2:2-3 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD… to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, The Lord will be openly recognized as the rightful King over all the earth. His rule will not be merely acknowledged in word but expressed through the nations’ obedience and worship at Jerusalem. Psa 84:1-4 For the choirmaster. According to Gittith.… then the rain will not fall on them. Those who refuse to come will experience the loss of rain, a direct judgment affecting their crops, food supply, and well-being. The withholding of rainfall will show that the blessings of the kingdom belong to those who submit to the King. Deu 11:16-17 But be careful that you are not enticed to turn aside… And if the people of Egypt will not go up and enter in, Egypt, once Israel’s oppressor and long associated with idolatry, will also be required to submit to the reign of the LORD and join the nations in worship at Jerusalem. Deu 16:16 Three times a year all your men appear before the LORD… then the rain will not fall on them; Refusal will bring the withholding of God’s provision, showing that Egypt, like every nation, depends upon His favor. Deu 11:10-17 For the land you are entering to possess is not like Egypt,… this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations Persistent rebellion will bring direct divine judgment, recalling God’s earlier judgments on Egypt and demonstrating His authority over all peoples. Exo 9:13-16 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning… who do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. The nations will be called to observe the feast that commemorates God’s care for Israel in the wilderness and celebrates His dwelling among His people. Lev 23:34-43 Speak to the Israelites and say, ‘On the fifteenth day… This will be the punishment of Egypt Egypt, once Israel’s oppressor and a recurring source of false security and idolatry, stands as a historical example of nations that resist the Lord’s rule. The judgment recalls God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt and His continuing authority over every kingdom. Exo 12:12 On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt… and of all the nations Egypt is not singled out alone. Every nation is accountable to the King who reigns from Jerusalem, and no people or government will be exempt from His judgment. Jer 25:31-33 The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth… that do not go up to celebrate The nations will be required to come in willing submission to worship the Lord. Refusal will reveal continued rebellion against His appointed order and will bring the stated punishment. Isa 2:2-3 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD… the Feast of Tabernacles. This feast commemorated God’s preservation of Israel in the wilderness and celebrated His provision at the harvest. In the future kingdom, it will mark the nations’ acknowledgment of the Lord’s faithfulness, reign, and dwelling among His people. Lev 23:34-43 Speak to the Israelites and say, ‘On the fifteenth day… On that day, “On that day” refers to the time when the Lord will fully establish His rule over the nations and His people. Rebellion will be judged and removed, and Jerusalem will be characterized by holiness. Zec 13:1 On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David,… HOLY TO THE LORD “Holy to the Lord” formerly appeared on the high priest’s turban, identifying him as set apart for God’s service. In that coming day, holiness will no longer be confined to priestly garments or temple vessels. Exo 28:36 You are to make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it… will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, Even animals associated with travel, labor, and warfare will bear the mark of consecration. Every part of life in the restored kingdom will belong openly to the Lord. Exo 28:33-35 Make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn… and the cooking pots in the house of the LORD Ordinary vessels used in preparing sacrificial meals will possess the same holy character as the articles reserved for priestly ministry. 2Ch 4:11-16 Additionally, Huram made the pots, shovels,… will be like the sprinkling bowls before the altar. The distinction between common and sacred objects will be removed because all that is used in worship and daily life will be devoted to God. Exo 27:3 Make all its utensils of bronze—its pots for removing ashes… Indeed, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORD of Hosts, In the coming kingdom, holiness will extend beyond the temple vessels to ordinary household pots throughout Jerusalem and Judah. The distinction between common and consecrated objects will be removed because the land and its people will be wholly set apart to the Lord. Exo 28:36 You are to make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it… and all who sacrifice will come and take some pots and cook in them. Worshipers coming to Jerusalem will find an abundance of vessels available for preparing sacrificial meals. The scene reflects ordered, widespread worship of the Lord, with no shortage of what is needed for those who come to honor Him. 2Ch 35:13 They roasted the Passover animals on the fire… And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the LORD of Hosts. No idolater, defiler, or corrupt person will remain in the Lord’s house. Jerusalem will be cleansed of the pagan practices and moral corruption that had long marked the nations around Israel, and the Lord will dwell among a holy people.
