Berean Study Bible The LORD’s Power Shown in LeviathanLeviathan is presented as a real, fearsome creature beyond human power to capture or master. Its strength and resistance to human control expose the limits of human ability and prepare for God’s description of His own authority over all He has made. Ezk 29:4 But I will put hooks in your jaws and cause the fish… or tie down his tongue with a rope? Even the simplest means of restraining an animal would be useless against Leviathan. What man cannot subdue remains fully subject to the Creator who formed it. Psa 39:1 For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.… Can you put a cord through his nose A cord through the nose was used to restrain and direct powerful domestic animals. God asks whether Job could handle Leviathan, a creature of immense power and strength, in such a way, exposing the impossibility of bringing this formidable creature under human control. 2Ki 19:28 Because your rage and arrogance against Me have reached… or pierce his jaw with a hook? Hooks could secure fish and other captured animals, but no man could seize Leviathan as prey or lead him away as a captive. The question magnifies Leviathan’s strength and reminds Job that creatures beyond human mastery remain fully under God’s rule. Ezk 29:4 But I will put hooks in your jaws and cause the fish… Will he beg you for mercy Leviathan is presented as a creature no human can master, intimidate, or compel to submit. It will not plead for mercy, because human strength has no power over it. God’s description exposes the limits of Job’s knowledge and ability before the majesty and order of creation. Job 9:15 For even if I were right, I could not answer.… or speak to you softly? Leviathan will not approach man with gentleness or surrender. Its untamed strength stands in sharp contrast to human weakness, showing that if Job cannot control such a creature, he cannot presume to govern or fully understand the works of God. Psa 55:21 His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart.… Will he make a covenant with you Leviathan cannot be persuaded to enter an agreement with man. A covenant involved solemn obligations and dependable terms, yet no human can bargain with or control this formidable creature. God’s question exposes Job’s inability to govern even one part of creation. Job 31:1 I have made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I gaze… to take him as a slave for life? Leviathan cannot be captured and reduced to permanent service. Though slaves were commonly kept for lifelong labor, no man could make such a masterful creature submit. The contrast magnifies the authority of God, who alone rules all that He has made. Deu 15:17 then take an awl and pierce it through his ear… Can you pet him like a bird Leviathan cannot be treated as a harmless household creature. Unlike a bird kept for enjoyment, he is beyond human control and cannot be made into a plaything. Psa 104:26 There the ships pass, and Leviathan, … or put him on a leash for your maidens? Even the weakest members of a household could manage a tame animal, but no one could lead Leviathan as a pet. The question exposes the limits of human strength and points to God’s unmatched rule over even the most formidable creatures. Job 39:10 Can you hold him to the furrow with a harness?… Will traders barter for him Leviathan cannot be captured and sold as a valuable commodity. Though merchants regularly exchanged livestock, skins, spices, metals, and other goods throughout the ancient world, no market could handle a creature of such strength and danger. Gen 37:28 So when the Midianite traders passed by, his brothers… or divide him among the merchants? Hunters could divide an ordinary catch among buyers, but Leviathan yields no spoils for trade. His untamable power places him beyond human possession, profit, and control. Psa 22:18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots… Can you fill his hide with harpoons Leviathan’s tough hide cannot be pierced by ordinary hunting weapons. Even skilled hunters, equipped for dangerous prey, are powerless against him. Ezk 29:4 But I will put hooks in your jaws and cause the fish… or his head with fishing spears? Spears used for fishing cannot overcome such a creature or strike him with effect. Leviathan’s strength exposes the limits of human power and prepares for the Lord’s declaration that He alone rules over all He has made. Psa 74:14 You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You fed him… If you lay a hand on him, Leviathan is the formidable creature God has been describing, far beyond Job’s ability to capture or control. Attempting to seize it would bring immediate danger. Job 3:8 May it be cursed by those who curse the day… you will remember the battle Anyone who entered such a struggle would not forget its violence or the creature’s strength. Deu 25:17-19 Remember what the Amalekites did to you along your way… and never repeat it! One encounter would be enough to end any thought of trying again. Its strength exposes the limits of human courage and mastery over creation. Job 3:8 May it be cursed by those who curse the day… Then who is able to stand against Me? If Job cannot contend with one of God’s creatures, he cannot question or challenge the Creator who made and governs all things. God’s power is absolute, and His wisdom and purposes stand beyond human judgment. 2Ch 20:6 O LORD, God of our fathers, are You not the God who is… Who has given to Me that I should repay him? God answers Job by declaring that no human being has placed Him under obligation. Job’s suffering did not give him a claim to demand an explanation or repayment from God. All people depend on God for life, strength, possessions, and wisdom; none can bargain with Him or judge His rule. Rom 11:35 “Who has first given to God, that God should repay him?” Everything under heaven is Mine. The Lord’s authority rests on His ownership of all creation. Job, his friends, the animals described in the chapter, and every part of the world belong to God. He governs what He has made according to His wisdom, while humanity remains accountable to Him as creatures and stewards of what He entrusts to them.
