Berean Study Bible Prayer for the SonJesus had completed His final instruction to the disciples during the meal before His arrest, preparing them for His departure and the coming work of the Holy Spirit. Jhn 16:33 I have told you these things so that in Me… He lifted up His eyes to heaven He turned openly to the Father in prayer as the events of His betrayal, arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection drew near. Jhn 11:41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted His eyes… and said, “Father, Jesus addressed God with the intimacy of the eternal Son, speaking as the One sent to complete the Father’s saving purpose. Luk 10:21 At that time Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit… the hour has come. The appointed time had arrived for His sacrifice, resurrection, and return to the glory He shared with the Father before the world began. Jhn 12:23 But Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man… Glorify Your Son, Jesus asked that the Father reveal His glory through the cross and resurrection, where His obedience and authority would be fully displayed. Jhn 13:31-32 When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified,… that Your Son may glorify You. The Son’s death and victory would reveal the Father’s holiness, love, justice, and power as salvation was accomplished. Jhn 14:13 And I will do whatever you ask in My name… For You granted Him authority over all people, Jesus acknowledges the authority the Father has given Him over all humanity. As the promised Son of Man and Messiah, He rules by the Father’s will and carries out the Father’s saving purpose. Mat 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven… so that He may give eternal life His authority is exercised to save, granting life that begins in knowing God and continues forever. Eternal life comes through the Son, whose coming death and resurrection would secure redemption for His people. Jhn 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.… to all those You have given Him. The Father has entrusted believers to the Son, and Jesus receives, keeps, and saves them. Their salvation rests in the Father’s purpose and the Son’s faithful work. Jhn 6:37 Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me,… Now this is eternal life, Eternal life is not merely endless existence after death but the life of God received by those who believe. It begins in the present through reconciliation with God and reaches its fullness in the age to come. 1Jn 5:11-12 And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life,… that they may know You, Eternal life consists in a real and personal relationship with the Father, marked by faith, love, obedience, and fellowship. Knowing God is more than intellectual awareness; it is intimate, relational, and experiential, involving a deep covenantal heart connection with Him. It is belonging to Him through His saving work. Jer 9:23-24 This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man… the only true God, Jesus affirms the God of Israel as the one living and true God, distinct from every idol and false deity. The Father alone is the source and ruler of all things. 1Th 1:9 For they themselves report what kind of welcome you gave us,… and Jesus Christ, The Son is identified as Jesus the Messiah, the promised Savior who fulfills God’s purpose of redemption. Knowing the Father cannot be separated from knowing the Son. Mat 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ… whom You have sent. Jesus came from the Father by divine commission to reveal God, accomplish salvation through His death and resurrection, and bring His people into eternal life. 1Jn 4:14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent… I have glorified You on earth Jesus had made the Father known through His teaching, works, compassion, holiness, and perfect obedience. His life displayed God’s character before Israel and prepared the way for the nations to receive the light of salvation. Jhn 12:28 “Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven:…… by accomplishing the work The mission included proclaiming the kingdom, revealing the Father, training the disciples, performing signs, and moving toward His sacrificial death and resurrection. Though the cross was still hours away, its completion was certain within the Father’s plan. Jhn 4:34 “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me”… You gave Me to do. The Son carried out the mission entrusted to Him by the Father, willingly fulfilling the divine purpose of redemption. Jhn 5:36 But I have testimony more substantial than that of John.… And now, Father, Jesus turns directly to the Father as He approaches the cross, speaking as the eternal Son in perfect fellowship with Him. Jhn 12:27-28 Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say?… glorify Me in Your presence He asks to be openly restored to the heavenly majesty that His earthly mission had veiled. His death, resurrection, and ascension would reveal both His obedience and His divine authority. Php 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place… with the glory I had with You Jesus speaks of a glory shared with the Father, not received after creation or earned through ministry. He possessed it eternally as the Son. Jhn 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God… before the world existed. Before creation, the Son existed with the Father in divine glory. His coming into the world was part of God’s eternal purpose to accomplish redemption. Eph 1:4 For He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world…
Prayer for the DisciplesJesus made known the Father’s character, will, and saving purpose through His words and works. As the incarnate Word, He perfectly displayed the Father to those who followed Him. Psa 22:22 I will proclaim Your name to my brothers;… to those You have given Me out of the world. The disciples were chosen from a sinful world that stands in rebellion against God. Their calling rested on the Father’s purpose and set them apart for service to Christ. Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own… They were Yours; They belonged to the Father before their call to follow Jesus, as God’s covenant people belong to Him by His sovereign claim. Deu 32:9 But the LORD’s portion is His people, Jacob… You gave them to Me, The Father entrusted them to the Son, showing the unity of the Father’s purpose and the Son’s authority to lead, preserve, and prepare them for their mission. Jhn 18:9 This was to fulfill the word He had spoken… and they have kept Your word. Though imperfect, they received and obeyed God’s revelation through Jesus, distinguishing them from those who rejected Him. Rev 3:8 I know your deeds. Behold, I have placed before you… Now they know The disciples had come to recognize more clearly that Jesus’ words, works, and authority were not independent claims but the revelation of the Father’s will. Their understanding, though not yet complete, prepared them for their coming witness after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension. Jhn 16:30 Now we understand that You know all things… that everything You have given Me Jesus possessed all that the Father had entrusted to Him: His message, authority, works, and the people given into His care. His earthly ministry unfolded in complete obedience to the Father’s purpose. Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.… comes from You. Jesus affirmed that His mission originated with the Father. He had been sent to make the Father known and to accomplish the salvation God had planned. Jhn 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world.… For I have given them the words You gave Me, Jesus faithfully delivered the revelation entrusted to Him by the Father. His teaching carried divine authority because He spoke in perfect unity with the Father’s will and purpose. Jhn 12:49-50 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me… and they have received them. The disciples accepted His words as truth rather than merely hearing them. Their reception marked genuine faith and growing obedience to the One they followed. 1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us… They knew with certainty that I came from You, Through Jesus’ works, teaching, and character, the disciples had come to recognize that His origin was with the Father. Their understanding of His identity had deepened beyond seeing Him only as a teacher or miracle worker. Jhn 7:29 but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.” and they believed that You sent Me. They trusted that Jesus had been sent by God to accomplish the Father’s saving purpose. Though their understanding was not yet complete, they believed that He was the promised Messiah acting under the Father’s authority. Jhn 11:42 I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this… I ask on their behalf. I do not ask on behalf of the world, Jesus distinguishes His disciples from the world that rejects God and stands opposed to His rule. His immediate concern is for those who believe in Him and will carry His message after His death, resurrection, and ascension. Their protection and faithfulness are essential to the mission entrusted to them. Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own… but on behalf of those You have given Me; The disciples belong to Jesus because the Father has drawn and entrusted them to the Son. Their calling did not begin with human initiative but with God’s purpose. Their future ministry rests on the Father’s plan and the Son’s care. Jhn 6:37 Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me,… for they are Yours. The disciples remain the Father’s possession even as they belong to the Son. Their security rests in God’s covenant care, not in their own strength. The shared ownership of the Father and Son also displays their unity in carrying out the work of salvation. Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us,… All I have is Yours, Jesus speaks of the complete unity He shares with the Father. Everything belonging to the Son belongs to the Father, revealing their shared divine nature, authority, and purpose. Throughout His ministry, Jesus carried out the Father’s will and made the Father known. Jhn 5:19 So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son…… and all You have is Mine; The Son possesses all that belongs to the Father, affirming His full equality with Him. Jesus is not merely the Father’s representative; He shares the Father’s glory, authority, and possession of all things. Jhn 16:15 Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine.… and in them I have been glorified. Jesus is glorified in the disciples who have received His word and believed in Him. Their faith, obedience, and continuing witness would display the truth of His mission before the world. 2Th 1:10 on the day He comes to be glorified in His saints… I will no longer be in the world, Jesus speaks of His approaching departure through His death, resurrection, and ascension. His earthly ministry was nearing its completion, though His saving work would continue through His exaltation and the sending of the Holy Spirit. Jhn 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world.… but they are in the world, The disciples would remain among people and powers opposed to Christ. They were to carry His message while facing rejection, pressure, and persecution, requiring the Father’s continuing care. Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own… and I am coming to You. Jesus would return to the Father in glory after accomplishing the work entrusted to Him. His return marked not defeat but the completion of His mission and the beginning of the disciples’ Spirit-empowered witness. Jhn 14:28 You heard Me say, ‘I am going away, and I am coming back… Holy Father, Jesus addresses God with both intimacy and reverence. The Father’s holiness sets Him apart from all sin and makes Him the righteous guardian of those who belong to Christ. Mat 6:9 So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven… protect them by Your name, Jesus asks the Father to preserve the disciples in faith, truth, and obedience. God’s name represents His authority, character, and covenant faithfulness, providing security against spiritual danger. Psa 20:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.… the name You gave Me, The Father had entrusted the Son with His authority and revealed Himself through Him. Jesus acted fully in accord with the Father’s will and made the Father known to His followers. Php 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place… so that they may be one as We are one. Jesus prays for a unity among His disciples grounded in their shared faith, love, and obedience. Their fellowship was to reflect, in a creaturely way, the perfect unity of the Father and the Son. Jhn 10:30 I and the Father are one.” While I was with them, Jesus recalls His earthly ministry among the disciples, during which He taught, led, and prepared them for the work ahead. Act 1:21-22 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men… I protected and preserved them by Your name, He kept them under the Father’s authority and care, guarding them from spiritual ruin. Psa 20:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.… the name You gave Me. Jesus acted in full unity with the Father, revealing God’s character and carrying out the mission entrusted to Him. Php 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place… Not one of them has been lost, All whom the Father gave Him were preserved in faith. Jhn 18:9 This was to fulfill the word He had spoken… except the son of destruction, Judas Iscariot departed through his own betrayal and was marked for judgment. 2Th 2:3 Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come… so that the Scripture would be fulfilled. His betrayal occurred according to God’s sovereign plan and in fulfillment of what Scripture had foretold. Act 1:16 Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled… But now I am coming to You; Jesus speaks on the eve of His arrest, fully aware that His death, resurrection, and ascension will bring Him back to the Father. His return marks the completion of the work He was sent to accomplish: revealing the Father, bearing sin, and securing salvation for those given to Him. Jhn 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world.… and I am saying these things while I am in the world, While still physically present with His disciples, Jesus prays openly for them. They will soon remain in a hostile world, often opposed to God, without His visible presence, yet His words prepare them for what lies ahead and assure them of His continuing care. Jhn 12:49-50 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me… so that they may have My joy fulfilled within them. Jesus desires His own joy—the joy of perfect fellowship with the Father and confidence in the Father’s completed purpose—to fill His disciples. Their joy rests not on ease or safety, but on belonging to Christ, receiving His word, and sharing in the eternal life He gives. Jhn 15:11 I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you… I have given them Your word Jesus faithfully delivered the Father’s revelation to the disciples, teaching them God’s truth and preparing them to continue His work after His departure. In receiving His word, they came to know the Father through the Son, whose life and ministry fulfilled God’s promises and revealed His will. 1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us… and the world has hated them. Their allegiance to Jesus placed them in conflict with a fallen order that rejects God’s authority. As the disciples proclaimed Christ, opposition arose from religious leaders, civil authorities, and others who resisted the gospel. 1Jn 3:13 So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you. For they are not of the world, Though they remained physically present among the nations, the disciples belonged to God’s kingdom. Their identity, purpose, and hope were no longer governed by the values and ambitions of the world. Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed… just as I am not of the world. Jesus came from the Father and carried out the Father’s will rather than the purposes of the world. His followers share this distinct calling, living among unbelievers while remaining devoted to Christ and His kingdom. Jhn 8:23 Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above.… I am not asking that You take them out of the world, Jesus prays that His disciples will remain in the world after His departure, continuing the work He has given them. Though they do not belong to the world’s fallen system, they are sent into it as His witnesses and will carry the gospel to the nations. Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own… but that You keep them from the evil one. Jesus asks the Father to guard them from Satan’s attacks, deception, temptation, and opposition. Their safety does not depend on escape from hardship but on the Father’s preserving power as they fulfill their mission. 2Th 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you… They are not of the world, Jesus’ disciples belong to God’s kingdom rather than to the fallen order that rejects His rule. Their new identity sets them apart in belief, conduct, and allegiance, even while they remain among unbelievers. Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own… just as I am not of the world. Jesus is distinct from the world because He came from the Father and perfectly obeyed His will. His followers share this separation through their union with Him, called to live under God’s authority rather than the values and desires of the world. Jhn 8:23 Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above.… Sanctify them by the truth; Jesus asks the Father to sanctify—set apart for a holy purpose—His disciples for the work they will carry into the world after His departure. Their consecration involves more than personal purity; they are devoted to God’s service and equipped to represent Christ faithfully amid opposition. 2Th 2:13 But we should always thank God for you, brothers… Your word is truth. God’s revealed word provides the standard by which they are sanctified. It exposes error, directs obedience, and forms them for their mission. Jesus identifies God’s word as wholly true, consistent with His own identity as the Word made flesh and the perfect revelation of the Father. Psa 119:160 The entirety of Your word is truth, and all Your judgments… As You sent Me into the world, Jesus came from the Father into fallen humanity to accomplish the work of redemption. His earthly ministry fulfilled God’s saving purpose through His teaching, sacrificial death, and resurrection. Though the world stood in rebellion against God, the Son entered it as its Savior. Jhn 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world… I have also sent them into the world. Jesus entrusted His disciples with the continuation of His mission. They were to testify to Him and proclaim the gospel among all peoples, not withdrawing from the world but serving within it as His representatives. Their work would extend through the Church as the message of salvation went to the nations. Jhn 20:21 Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me,”… For them I sanctify Myself, Jesus consecrates Himself to the Father’s will as He approaches the cross. Though already holy and sinless, He sanctifies Himself—sets Himself apart for a holy purpose—as the willing sacrifice for His people, fulfilling His priestly work by offering Himself for their redemption. Eph 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved… so that they too may be sanctified His self-offering secures the setting apart of His disciples for God. They belong to Him and are made holy in purpose and service because of His saving work. Heb 2:11 For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified… by the truth. Their sanctification rests on the truth revealed by God and embodied in Christ. Through His word and His sacrifice, believers are separated from the world and formed into a people who live under God’s authority. 2Th 2:13 But we should always thank God for you, brothers…
Prayer for All BelieversJesus’ prayer includes the disciples gathered with Him at the Last Supper, men who had followed Him throughout His ministry and would soon face His arrest, crucifixion, and departure. As He prepares them for their mission, He intercedes for their protection, faithfulness, and unity. Rom 8:34 Who is there to condemn us? For Christ Jesus, who died… but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message, His concern extends to all who would come to faith through the apostles’ testimony. Their preaching of the Gospel would become the means by which believers from every nation would hear of Christ and trust in Him. Jesus therefore prays not only for the first disciples but for all who would belong to Him through their witness. Rom 10:17 Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing… that all of them may be one, Jesus prays for the unity of all who believe in Him. Their oneness is spiritual, grounded in a common faith, obedience, and love rather than in human institutions or uniformity of background. The early church faced disputes and divisions, yet believers were called to remain one body under Christ. Eph 4:4-6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called… as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. The Father and the Son share perfect fellowship, purpose, and glory. Jesus’ relationship with the Father is unique and eternal, revealing the unity of the Godhead. The harmony between Father and Son establishes the pattern for the unity Jesus desires among His people. Jhn 10:38 But if I am doing them, even though you do not believe Me,… May they also be in Us, Believers are brought into fellowship with God through faith in Christ. This union gives them a new identity and binds them to one another as members of Christ’s body. It is a present spiritual reality that grows as they abide in Him and follow His word. Jhn 14:20 On that day you will know that I am in My Father,… so that the world may believe that You sent Me. The visible unity and love of Christ’s followers bear witness to the truth of His mission. A church divided by pride, hostility, or false teaching weakens that witness, while faithful unity displays the reconciling work of the One sent by the Father. Jhn 11:42 I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this… I have given them the glory You gave Me, Jesus shares with His disciples the glory He received from the Father: the revelation of God’s character, truth, and saving purpose displayed in His earthly ministry. This glory transforms those who belong to Him and equips them to represent Him in the world. Rom 8:17 And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God… so that they may be one as We are one— Their unity is to reflect the perfect fellowship of the Father and the Son. It is a spiritual unity grounded in shared faith, love, holiness, and obedience to Christ, demonstrating that His people belong to Him. Jhn 10:30 I and the Father are one.” I in them and You in Me— Jesus describes the shared life of believers with Himself and His Father. Through faith, Christ dwells in His people, joining them to the Son who eternally lives in perfect fellowship with the Father. Jhn 14:20 On that day you will know that I am in My Father,… that they may be perfectly united, Such unity is spiritual and moral, formed by common faith in Christ, obedience to His word, and love for one another. Though believers differ in background and calling, they belong to one body under one Lord. 1Co 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord… so that the world may know that You sent Me The visible unity and love of Christ’s people testify that Jesus is the Father’s sent Son. Their life together confirms the reality of His mission and the truth of the gospel. Jhn 13:35 By this everyone will know that you are My disciples,… and have loved them just as You have loved Me. The Father’s love for believers rests in their union with His Son. They are received and loved not as strangers, but as those whom Christ has brought into the Father’s household. Jhn 15:9 As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.… Father, Jesus addresses God with the intimacy and reverence of the eternal Son, affirming their unique relationship within the Godhead. Mat 11:25 At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father… I want those You have given Me He speaks of those entrusted to Him by the Father, whose salvation rests in God’s sovereign purpose and Christ’s keeping power. Jhn 18:9 This was to fulfill the word He had spoken… to be with Me where I am, His purpose for His people extends beyond earthly faith to their everlasting presence with Him in heaven. Jhn 12:26 If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am… that they may see the glory You gave Me Believers will behold the full majesty of the risen and exalted Christ, sharing unhindered fellowship with Him. 2Pe 1:16-17 For we did not follow cleverly devised fables… because You loved Me before the foundation of the world. The Father’s love for the Son existed before creation, revealing Christ’s eternal preexistence and the eternal counsel behind redemption. Eph 1:4-5 For He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world… Righteous Father, God’s perfect justice stands in contrast to the world’s rebellion, while “Father” reveals the eternal relationship between the Son and the One who sent Him. Psa 11:7 For the LORD is righteous; He loves justice.… although the world has not known You, Humanity in its fallen condition has rejected God and failed to recognize His revelation in Christ. Jhn 1:10 He was in the world, and though the world… I know You, Jesus alone knows the Father fully, sharing His purpose and carrying out His will. Jhn 10:15 just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father.… and they know that You sent Me. The disciples have come to recognize that Jesus is the Father’s Messiah, sent into the world to reveal God and accomplish salvation. Jhn 11:42 I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this… And I have made Your name known to them Jesus revealed the Father’s character, will, and saving purpose to the disciples through His teaching, works, obedience, and sacrificial mission. In Him, they saw the holiness, truth, mercy, and authority of God made known. Jhn 1:18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son… and will continue to make it known, His revelation would not end with His death. Through His resurrection, the sending of the Holy Spirit, and the testimony of the apostles, Christ would continue to make the Father known to those who believe. Jhn 16:13-15 However, when the Spirit of truth comes… so that the love You have for Me may be in them, The Father’s eternal love for the Son is extended to Christ’s followers, binding them to God and to one another in the life of the new covenant. Rom 5:5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out… and I in them.” Christ dwells in believers through the Holy Spirit, joining them to Himself and forming them to reflect His character and carry out His mission. Jhn 14:20 On that day you will know that I am in My Father,… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
