Gilead lay east of the Jordan and was assigned largely to the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. Its fertile land and strategic position made it an important part of Israel’s settlement in the promised land. 1Ki 4:13 Ben-geber in Ramoth-gilead (the villages of Jair… But Geshur and Aram captured Havvoth-jair, Geshur and Aram were Aramean powers north and northeast of Israel that contested the Transjordan region. Their seizure of Havvoth-jair, meaning “villages of Jair,” records the loss of settlements established by Jair’s family in Gilead and Bashan, lands valued for pasture, agriculture, and control of major routes. Deu 3:14 He renamed Bashan after himself, Havvoth-jair… along with Kenath and its sixty surrounding villages. Kenath and the villages under its authority formed a substantial district in Bashan. The capture of these towns shows that the loss extended beyond isolated settlements and affected a broad portion of the inheritance associated with Manasseh east of the Jordan. Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh, became the ancestor of the clan that settled Gilead. Sheshan, whose name may mean “noble” or “joyful,” belonged to a Judahite family whose inheritance was preserved despite the absence of male heirs. 1Ch 23:22 Eleazar died without having any sons; he had only daughters.… The son of Sheshan: Ahlai. Ahlai, whose name means “ornament” or “adornment,” is listed as Sheshan’s descendant, though Sheshan later is said to have had daughters but no sons. The record preserves the family line before noting that Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to Jarha, an Egyptian servant, through whom the household continued. 1Ch 11:41 Uriah the Hittite, Zabad son of Ahlai, The sons of Jada the brother of Shammai: Jada belonged to the family line descending from Judah through Jarha and Shammai. The record preserves the branches of Judah’s clan structure, showing the household relationships that shaped inheritance and identity within the tribe. 1Ch 4:17 The sons of Ezrah: Jether, Mered, Epher, and Jalon.… Jether and Jonathan. Jada had two sons, Jether and Jonathan. Their names are included as part of the careful genealogical record of Judah’s descendants. Jdg 8:20 So he said to Jether, his firstborn, “Get up and kill them.”… Jether died without children. Jether left no descendants to continue his branch of the family. His childlessness ended that particular household line, while the genealogy continued through the surviving branches of the wider family. Luk 20:28-30 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us… The sons of Jonathan: Jonathan, whose name means “Yahweh has given,” belonged to the Jerahmeelite branch of Judah. He was not Jonathan, Saul’s son, but a later descendant within Judah’s extended family line. 1Ch 8:34 The son of Jonathan: Merib-baal, and Merib-baal… Peleth and Zaza. Peleth (“swiftness” or “flight”) and Zaza (“belonging to all” or “plenty”) were Jonathan’s sons. Though little else is recorded about them, their names preserve the continuity of the Jerahmeelite household within the tribe of Judah. Num 16:1 Now Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath son of Levi… These were the descendants of Jerahmeel. Jerahmeel descended from Judah through Hezron. His family formed one of Judah’s recognized clans, contributing to the tribal line from which David’s royal house would later arise. 1Sa 27:10 Who would ask him, “What have you raided today?”… Sheshan had no sons, but only daughters. Without a male heir, Sheshan’s family line faced an unusual succession situation in a culture where inheritance normally passed through sons. His daughters therefore became essential to preserving his household and descendants. Num 27:8 Furthermore, you shall say to the Israelites,… He also had an Egyptian servant named Jarha. Jarha’s presence reflects the longstanding contact between Israel and Egypt. In the following record, Sheshan gives his daughter to Jarha in marriage, and their descendants are included among Judah’s families. 1Sa 30:13 “I am an Egyptian,” he replied, “the slave of an Amalekite.”… Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to his servant Jarha, Sheshan, a descendant of Judah, had no sons to continue his household. He therefore gave his daughter to Jarha, an Egyptian servant in his household. Through this marriage, Jarha became connected to Sheshan’s family line and inheritance. Exo 21:4-6 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him… and she bore to him Attai. Attai became Sheshan’s descendant through his daughter, preserving the family line despite the lack of a male heir. His place in Judah’s genealogy shows that this household remained recognized within the tribe. Gen 16:15-16 And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael… Attai was the father of Nathan, Attai, whose name means “timely” or “my time,” continued the family of Sheshan through Sheshan’s daughter and Jarha, his Egyptian servant. His place in the genealogy preserves a Judahite household that would otherwise have ended with Sheshan’s lack of sons. 1Ch 3:5 and these sons were born to him in Jerusalem:… Nathan was the father of Zabad, Nathan and Zabad, whose names mean “he gave” or “gift” and “endowed” or “gift,” carry the line forward as part of the wider genealogy of Judah, recording the continuity of families beyond the royal line of David. 1Ch 11:41 Uriah the Hittite, Zabad son of Ahlai, Zabad was the father of Ephlal, The genealogy continues the family of Sheshan through his daughter and Jarha, preserving a recognized branch within the tribe of Judah; Zabad means “gift” or “endowment.” 1Ch 7:20 The descendants of Ephraim: Shuthelah, Bered his son,… Ephlal was the father of Obed, Obed, meaning “servant” or “worshiper,” carried forward Ephlal’s line—Ephlal meaning “judge” or “intercessor”—as the descendants of Sheshan were recorded among the clans connected to Judah. His place in the genealogy records the continuing household established through Sheshan’s daughter and Jarha, an Egyptian servant in Sheshan’s household. 1Ch 11:27 Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite, Helez was the father of Elasah, Helez, whose name means “strength” or “vigor,” carried this family line forward within Judah. Little else is recorded about Helez or Elasah, whose name means “God has made,” but their inclusion preserves the ancestry of Sheshan’s descendants and demonstrates the careful record of Judah’s families. Jer 29:3 The letter was entrusted to Elasah son of Shaphan… Elasah was the father of Sismai, Elasah, meaning “God has made,” continued the family line of Sheshan, preserved through Sheshan’s daughter and Jarha, his Egyptian servant. His place in the genealogy records the continuing household within the descendants of Judah. 1Ch 8:37 Moza was the father of Binea. Raphah was his son… Sismai was the father of Shallum, Sismai, whose name may mean “high” or “exalted,” carried this branch forward to Shallum, meaning “retribution” or “recompense,” maintaining the family record through successive generations. The list shows that even lesser-known households remained part of Judah’s established tribal lineage. 1Ch 6:12 Ahitub was the father of Zadok, Zadok was the father… Shallum was the father of Jekamiah, Shallum, whose name means “retribution” or “recompense,” belonged to the descendants of Jerahmeel, a branch of Judah’s tribe. His place in the record preserves the continuing family line that descended through Sheshan’s daughter and her Egyptian husband, Jarha. 1Ch 3:18 Malchiram, Pedaiah, Shenazzar, Jekamiah, Hoshama… and Jekamiah was the father of Elishama. Jekamiah (“the Lord raises”) carried that line forward to Elishama (“God has heard”). Though little else is known of these men, their inclusion confirms the established households and generations within Judah. 1Ch 3:6 David’s other sons were Ibhar, Elishua, Eliphelet, The sons of Caleb the brother of Jerahmeel: Caleb belonged to the family of Hezron in the tribe of Judah and was the brother of Jerahmeel. He is distinct from Caleb son of Jephunneh, who entered Canaan with Joshua. The genealogy records the growth of Judah’s leading families and preserves the lines connected with its towns and clans. 1Sa 30:29 those in Racal and in the cities of the Jerahmeelites… Mesha his firstborn, who was the father of Ziph, Mesha headed the line associated with Ziph, a Judahite settlement in the hill country south of Jerusalem. As firstborn, he held the leading place among Caleb’s sons and represented an important branch of the family. Jos 15:24 Ziph, Telem, Bealoth, and Mareshah his second son, who was the father of Hebron. Mareshah was connected with Hebron, one of Judah’s most ancient and significant cities. Hebron was associated with Abraham’s household and later became David’s first royal center, linking Caleb’s descendants with places central to Judah’s history. Jos 15:44 Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah—nine cities… The sons of Hebron: Hebron was a descendant of Caleb through Mareshah and represented a family line within the tribe of Judah. His descendants formed additional branches of Caleb’s house. 1Ch 23:19 The sons of Hebron: Jeriah was the first, Amariah the second… Korah, Korah, whose name means “bald” or “ice,” was a member of this Judahite family and is not the Levite Korah who later rebelled against Moses. Num 26:9-11 and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan… Tappuah, Tappuah, meaning “apple” or “fruit,” belonged to Hebron’s line, preserving the record of another household within Caleb’s descendants. Jos 17:8 The region of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh… Rekem, Rekem, meaning “variegation” or “embroidered,” was likewise counted among the sons of Hebron, showing the continued growth of Judah’s clans. Num 31:8 Among the slain were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba… and Shema. Shema, whose name means “hear” or “obey,” completed the list of Hebron’s sons, whose families contributed to the tribal inheritance and settlement of Judah. 1Ch 8:13 and Beriah and Shema (who were the heads of families… Shema was the father of Raham Shema belonged to the Judahite line recorded by the Chronicler. Raham carried forward this family branch within the clan structure of Judah. 1Ch 5:4 The descendants of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son… the father of Jorkeam, Jorkeam represents the next generation in the household, preserving the family’s place among the descendants of Judah and its inherited identity within Israel. Jos 15:56 Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah, and Rekem was the father of Shammai. Rekem and Shammai formed another branch of the same wider genealogy. Its inclusion in the genealogy shows how Caleb’s descendants established families and settlements that strengthened Judah’s presence in the land. Jos 15:58 Halhul, Beth-zur, Gedor, Caleb’s concubine Ephah Ephah was Caleb’s concubine and bore sons who were included in his genealogical line. Gen 36:12 Additionally, Timna, a concubine of Esau’s son Eliphaz,… was the mother of Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Her sons formed another branch of Caleb’s descendants within the tribe of Judah. Their inclusion preserves the full record of Caleb’s household and its continuing lines. Gen 11:27-31 This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of… Haran was the father of Gazez. This identifies a second Gazez, the son of Haran and grandson of Ephah, showing the continuation of the family through successive generations. Gen 11:29-31 And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves.… The sons of Jahdai: Jahdai’s family is preserved within the genealogical record of Judah, showing that even lesser-known households belonged to the recognized line of the tribe. 1Ch 4:1 The descendants of Judah: Perez, Hezron, Carmi… Regem, Regem, whose name means “friend” or “companion,” is listed among Jahdai’s sons, continuing the record of his household. Zec 7:2 Now the people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech,… Jotham, Jotham, meaning “Yahweh is perfect” or “Yahweh is complete,” likewise belonged to this family line, distinct from others in Scripture who bore the same name. 2Ch 27:1 Jotham was twenty-five years old when he became king,… Geshan, Geshan’s inclusion confirms the breadth of Jahdai’s descendants. Mat 1:2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob,… Pelet, Pelet, whose name means “deliverance” or “escape,” appears as another member of the household whose name was retained in Israel’s tribal record. 1Ch 12:3 Ahiezer their chief and Joash, who were the sons of Shemaah… Ephah, Ephah belongs to the same line and should not be confused with other individuals or groups bearing that name. The name means “darkness” or “gloom.” Gen 25:4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, and Hanoch.… and Shaaph. Shaaph, whose name means “bald” or “bare,” completes the list of Jahdai’s sons, preserving a branch of Judah’s ancestry within the larger account of God’s people. Ezr 2:1 Now these are the people of the province who came up… Caleb’s concubine Maacah Maacah, possibly of Aramean or Canaanite origin, was a concubine in Caleb’s household, and her children were recognized within his family line. Her inclusion preserves a branch of Caleb’s descendants among the clans of Judah. Jos 15:13-19 According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave… was the mother of Sheber and Tirhanah. Sheber and Tirhanah belonged to Caleb’s extended household. Their names contribute to the record of Judah’s growth through its families and clans. Jdg 8:31 His concubine, who dwelt in Shechem, also bore him… She was also the mother of Shaaph father of Madmannah, Shaaph belonged to Caleb’s household and was associated with Madmannah, a settlement in the southern territory of Judah. The genealogy records the families through whom towns and surrounding lands were established and administered. Jos 15:31 Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah, and of Sheva father of Machbenah and Gibea. Sheva was connected with Machbenah and Gibea, preserving the memory of Caleb’s descendants as leaders or founders within Judah. These names show the continuing settlement of the land through established family lines. Jos 15:57 Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah—ten cities, along with… Caleb’s daughter was Acsah. Acsah was Caleb’s daughter and later became the wife of Othniel. Her place in the genealogy reflects the importance of Caleb’s family and the inheritance secured within Judah. Jos 15:16-19 And Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher…… These were the descendants of Caleb. This Caleb was a Judahite descendant of Hezron, distinct from Caleb son of Jephunneh. His family formed influential clans within Judah. Jos 15:13-19 According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave… The sons of Hur the firstborn of Ephrathah: Hur, Caleb’s firstborn by Ephrathah, continued this Judahite line. The family was closely associated with the region of Ephrathah and Bethlehem. Mic 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small… Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim, Shobal headed the clan connected with Kiriath-jearim, a Judahite town where the ark of God remained for a time before David brought it to Jerusalem. 1Sa 7:1-2 Then the men of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD… Salma the father of Bethlehem, Salma is named as the leading ancestor of Bethlehem, meaning “house of bread,” a Judahite town in the hill country south of Jerusalem. Bethlehem later became the home of David’s family and the birthplace of Jesus Christ, giving it lasting importance in the royal and messianic line. 1Ch 4:4 Penuel was the father of Gedor, and Ezer… and Hareph the father of Beth-gader. Hareph, meaning “reproach” or “autumn,” is identified with Beth-gader, “house of the wall” or “house of the enclosure,” apparently a settlement in Judah. These names preserve the family and town connections within Judah, showing how its clans were established throughout the land promised to Israel. Jos 15:36 Shaaraim, Adithaim, and Gederah (or Gederothaim)… These were the descendants of Shobal Shobal belonged to the family of Hur within Judah and headed a branch of the tribe associated with settlements in the hill country. Gen 36:20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who were living… the father of Kiriath-jearim: He was regarded as the founder or leading ancestor of Kiriath-jearim, meaning “City of Forests,” a Judahite city later known for housing the ark before David brought it to Jerusalem. 1Sa 6:21 So they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath-jearim,… Haroeh, Haroeh, whose name means “the seer” or “the visionary,” was one of Shobal’s descendants and likely the head of a family group connected with Kiriath-jearim. 1Sa 9:9 Formerly in Israel, a man on his way to inquire of God… half the Manahathites, This branch of Shobal’s family included half of the Manahathite clan, indicating that the clan was divided among separate family lines or settlements. 1Ch 1:40 The sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.… and the clans of Kiriath-jearim— Kiriath-jearim stood near the border of Judah and Benjamin and was an important settlement in Judah’s inheritance. The ark remained there for many years after its return from Philistine territory, before David later brought it to Jerusalem. 1Sa 6:21 So they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath-jearim,… the Ithrites, The Ithrites were among the families associated with Kiriath-jearim. Ira and Gareb the Ithrites later served among David’s mighty men. 2Sa 23:38 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, Puthites, The Puthites were another family descended from the people of Kiriath-jearim, preserving their place within Judah’s tribal records. Num 26:23 These were the descendants of Issachar by their clans:… Shumathites, The Shumathites formed a distinct clan within the same community and shared in its inheritance and identity. Num 26:42 These were the descendants of Dan by their clans:… and Mishraites. The Mishraites complete the list of Kiriath-jearim’s principal clans. Gen 10:13-14 Mizraim was the father of the Ludites, the Anamites,… From these descended the Zorathites and Eshtaolites. These families became associated with Zorah and Eshtaol, towns in the western part of Judah. The area later became closely connected with Samson, who was raised near these towns and buried there. Jos 15:33-34 These were in the foothills: Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah,… The descendants of Salma: Salma, a descendant of Caleb through Hur, headed a branch of Judah connected with several towns and clans in the region surrounding Bethlehem. Rut 4:18-22 Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez was the father… Bethlehem, Bethlehem became one of Judah’s most significant towns, later known as the home of David and the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Rut 1:1-2 In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine… the Netophathites, The Netophathites were a Judahite community from the area near Bethlehem and remained identified with their ancestral town. 1Ch 9:16 Obadiah son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal… Atroth-beth-joab, Atroth-beth-joab was a settlement associated with Salma’s line; “Atroth” means “crowns” or “villages,” preserving the memory of an early Judahite family or leader. Num 32:34 And the Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, half the Manahathites, Only one division of the Manahathites belonged to this branch, reflecting the spread of related clans among different settlements. 1Ch 8:6 These were the descendants of Ehud who were… the Zorites, The Zorites were another Judahite clan associated with Salma’s descendants, showing the growth of Caleb’s family into established communities within Judah. 1Ch 4:2 Reaiah son of Shobal was the father of Jahath,… and the clans of the scribes who lived at Jabez— These families were established at Jabez and served in the important work of preserving written records and instruction. Their settled community reflects an organized place for learning and administration within Judah. 1Ch 4:9-10 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers.… the Tirathites, Shimeathites, and Sucathites. These were distinct clans among the scribes, identified by their family lines and united in their service. Jdg 1:16 Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite… These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, Though of Kenite descent, these families had become associated with Judah. Hammath was their ancestral head, from whom their line was traced. Jdg 4:11 Now Heber the Kenite had moved away from the Kenites,… the father of the house of Rechab. The Rechabites were a recognized family within this Kenite heritage, known for maintaining the disciplined way of life established by their forefathers.
