1	Καὶ εὐθὺς πρωῒ συμβούλιον ποιήσαντες* οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ γραμματέων καὶ ὅλον τὸ συνέδριον δήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήνεγκαν καὶ παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ	And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.	Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
2	Καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν ὁ Πιλᾶτος Σὺ εἶ ὁ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ λέγει Σὺ λέγεις	And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”	“Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
3	Καὶ κατηγόρουν αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς πολλά	And the chief priests accused him of many things.	The chief priests accused him of many things.
4	Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν λέγων Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν ἴδε πόσα σου κατηγοροῦσιν	And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.”	So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
5	Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς οὐκέτι οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίθη ὥστε θαυμάζειν τὸν Πιλᾶτον	But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.	But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.
6	Κατὰ δὲ ἑορτὴν ἀπέλυεν αὐτοῖς ἕνα δέσμιον ὃν παρῃτοῦντο	Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.	Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested.
7	ἦν δὲ ὁ λεγόμενος Βαραββᾶς μετὰ τῶν στασιαστῶν δεδεμένος οἵτινες ἐν τῇ στάσει φόνον πεποιήκεισαν	And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.	A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising.
8	καὶ ἀναβὰς ὁ ὄχλος ἤρξατο αἰτεῖσθαι καθὼς ἐποίει αὐτοῖς	And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.	The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.
9	Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς λέγων Θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων	And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”	“Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate,
10	ἐγίνωσκεν γὰρ ὅτι διὰ φθόνον παραδεδώκεισαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς	For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.	knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.
11	Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς ἀνέσεισαν τὸν ὄχλον ἵνα μᾶλλον τὸν Βαραββᾶν ἀπολύσῃ αὐτοῖς	But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.	But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.
12	Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἀποκριθεὶς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Τί οὖν ‹θέλετε› ποιήσω ὃν λέγετε τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων	And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”	“What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.
13	Οἱ δὲ πάλιν ἔκραξαν Σταύρωσον αὐτόν	And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”	“Crucify him!” they shouted.
14	Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Τί γὰρ ἐποίησεν κακόν Οἱ δὲ περισσῶς ἔκραξαν Σταύρωσον αὐτόν	And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”	“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
15	Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος βουλόμενος τῷ ὄχλῳ τὸ ἱκανὸν ποιῆσαι ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν καὶ παρέδωκεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας ἵνα σταυρωθῇ	So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.	Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
16	Οἱ δὲ στρατιῶται ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν ἔσω τῆς αὐλῆς ὅ ἐστιν Πραιτώριον καὶ συνκαλοῦσιν ὅλην τὴν σπεῖραν	And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion.	The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.
17	καὶ ἐνδιδύσκουσιν αὐτὸν πορφύραν καὶ περιτιθέασιν αὐτῷ πλέξαντες ἀκάνθινον στέφανον	And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.	They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.
18	καὶ ἤρξαντο ἀσπάζεσθαι αὐτόν Χαῖρε Βασιλεῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων	And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”	And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”
19	Καὶ ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὴν κεφαλὴν καλάμῳ καὶ ἐνέπτυον αὐτῷ καὶ τιθέντες τὰ γόνατα προσεκύνουν αὐτῷ	And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.	Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.
20	καὶ ὅτε ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὴν πορφύραν καὶ ἐνέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ‹ἴδια› Καὶ ἐξάγουσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα σταυρώσωσιν αὐτόν	And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.	And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
21	Καὶ ἀγγαρεύουσιν παράγοντά τινα Σίμωνα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπ’ ἀγροῦ τὸν πατέρα Ἀλεξάνδρου καὶ Ῥούφου ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ	And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.	A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.
22	Καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Γολγοθᾶν τόπον ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον* Κρανίου τόπος	And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).	They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).
23	καὶ ἐδίδουν αὐτῷ ἐσμυρνισμένον οἶνον ὃς δὲ οὐκ ἔλαβεν	And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.	Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
24	Καὶ σταυροῦσιν αὐτὸν καὶ διαμερίζονται τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον ἐπ’ αὐτὰ τίς τί ἄρῃ	And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.	And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.
25	Ἦν δὲ ὥρα τρίτη καὶ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν	And it was the third hour when they crucified him.	It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.
26	καὶ ἦν ἡ ἐπιγραφὴ τῆς αἰτίας αὐτοῦ ἐπιγεγραμμένη Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ	And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.”	The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.
27	Καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ σταυροῦσιν δύο λῃστάς ἕνα ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ ἕνα ἐξ εὐωνύμων αὐτοῦ	And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.	They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left.
28	⧼Καὶ ἐπληρώθη ἡ γραφὴ ἡ λέγουσα Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη⧽
29	Καὶ οἱ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ λέγοντες Οὐὰ ὁ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ οἰκοδομῶν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις	And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,	Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,
30	σῶσον σεαυτὸν καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ	save yourself, and come down from the cross!”	come down from the cross and save yourself!”
31	Ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων ἔλεγον Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι	So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.	In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself!
32	ὁ Χριστὸς ὁ Βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ πιστεύσωμεν καὶ οἱ συνεσταυρωμένοι σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν	Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.	Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
33	Καὶ γενομένης ὥρας ἕκτης σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ’ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης	And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.	At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
34	καὶ τῇ ἐνάτῃ ὥρᾳ ἐβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἐλωῒ Ἐλωῒ λεμὰ* σαβαχθάνι* ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Ὁ Θεός μου ὁ Θεός μου εἰς τί ἐγκατέλιπές με	And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”	And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
35	Καί τινες τῶν παρεστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον Ἴδε Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ	And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”	When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36	Δραμὼν δέ τις καὶ γεμίσας σπόγγον ὄξους περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν λέγων Ἄφετε ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας καθελεῖν αὐτόν	And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.”	Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37	Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀφεὶς φωνὴν μεγάλην ἐξέπνευσεν	And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.	With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.
38	Καὶ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη εἰς δύο ἀπ’ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω	And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.	The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
39	Ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ κεντυρίων ὁ παρεστηκὼς ἐξ ἐναντίας αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως ἐξέπνευσεν εἶπεν Ἀληθῶς οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος Υἱὸς Θεοῦ ἦν	And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”	And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”
40	Ἦσαν δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι ἐν αἷς καὶ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ἡ Ἰακώβου τοῦ μικροῦ καὶ Ἰωσῆτος μήτηρ καὶ Σαλώμη	There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.	Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome.
41	αἳ ὅτε ἦν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ καὶ διηκόνουν αὐτῷ καὶ ἄλλαι πολλαὶ αἱ συναναβᾶσαι αὐτῷ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα	When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.	In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.
42	Καὶ ἤδη ὀψίας γενομένης ἐπεὶ ἦν Παρασκευή ὅ ἐστιν προσάββατον	And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,	It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached,
43	ἐλθὼν Ἰωσὴφ ὁ ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας εὐσχήμων βουλευτής ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν προσδεχόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ τολμήσας εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς τὸν Πιλᾶτον καὶ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ	Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.
44	Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἐθαύμασεν εἰ ἤδη τέθνηκεν καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν κεντυρίωνα ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν εἰ πάλαι ἀπέθανεν	Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.	Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died.
45	καὶ γνοὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ κεντυρίωνος ἐδωρήσατο τὸ πτῶμα τῷ Ἰωσήφ	And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph.	When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.
46	Καὶ ἀγοράσας σινδόνα καθελὼν αὐτὸν ἐνείλησεν τῇ σινδόνι καὶ ἔθηκεν* αὐτὸν ἐν μνημείῳ* ὃ ἦν λελατομημένον ἐκ πέτρας καὶ προσεκύλισεν λίθον ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τοῦ μνημείου	And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.	So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
47	ἡ δὲ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ἡ Ἰωσῆτος ἐθεώρουν ποῦ τέθειται	Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.	Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid.
