1When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain. After he sat down his disciples came to him.

1Ἰδὼν δὲ τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος καὶ καθίσαντος αὐτοῦ προσῆλθαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ

2Then he began to teach them by saying:

2καὶ ἀνοίξας τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ ἐδίδασκεν αὐτοὺς λέγων

3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

3Μακάριοι οἱ πτωχοὶ τῷ πνεύματι Ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν

4"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

4Μακάριοι οἱ πενθοῦντες Ὅτι αὐτοὶ παρακληθήσονται

5"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

5Μακάριοι οἱ πραεῖς Ὅτι αὐτοὶ κληρονομήσουσιν τὴν γῆν

6"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

6Μακάριοι οἱ πεινῶντες καὶ διψῶντες τὴν δικαιοσύνην Ὅτι αὐτοὶ χορτασθήσονται

7"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

7Μακάριοι οἱ ἐλεήμονες Ὅτι αὐτοὶ ἐλεηθήσονται

8"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

8Μακάριοι οἱ καθαροὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ Ὅτι αὐτοὶ τὸν Θεὸν ὄψονται

9"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.

9Μακάριοι οἱ εἰρηνοποιοί Ὅτι αὐτοὶ υἱοὶ Θεοῦ κληθήσονται

10"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

10Μακάριοι οἱ δεδιωγμένοι ἕνεκεν δικαιοσύνης Ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν

11"Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely on account of me.

11Μακάριοί ἐστε ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς καὶ διώξωσιν καὶ εἴπωσιν πᾶν πονηρὸν καθ’ ὑμῶν ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ

12Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.

12χαίρετε καὶ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε ὅτι ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς οὕτως γὰρ ἐδίωξαν τοὺς προφήτας τοὺς πρὸ ὑμῶν

13"You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its flavor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on by people.

13Ὑμεῖς ἐστε τὸ ἅλας τῆς γῆς ἐὰν δὲ τὸ ἅλας μωρανθῇ ἐν τίνι ἁλισθήσεται εἰς οὐδὲν ἰσχύει ἔτι εἰ μὴ βληθὲν ἔξω καταπατεῖσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων

14You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden.

14Ὑμεῖς ἐστε τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου οὐ δύναται πόλις κρυβῆναι ἐπάνω ὄρους κειμένη

15People do not light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.

15οὐδὲ καίουσιν λύχνον καὶ τιθέασιν αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τὸν μόδιον ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ τὴν λυχνίαν καὶ λάμπει πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ

16In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good deeds and give honor to your Father in heaven.

16οὕτως λαμψάτω τὸ φῶς ὑμῶν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὅπως ἴδωσιν ὑμῶν τὰ καλὰ ἔργα καὶ δοξάσωσιν τὸν πατέρα ὑμῶν τὸν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς

17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill them.

17Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι ἦλθον καταλῦσαι τὸν νόμον ἢ τοὺς προφήτας οὐκ ἦλθον καταλῦσαι ἀλλὰ πληρῶσαι

18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth pass away not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter will pass from the law until everything takes place.

18ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν ἕως ἂν παρέλθῃ ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ ἰῶτα ἓν ἢ μία κεραία οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου ἕως ἂν πάντα γένηται

19So anyone who breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever obeys them and teaches others to do so will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

19Ὃς ἐὰν οὖν λύσῃ μίαν τῶν ἐντολῶν τούτων τῶν ἐλαχίστων καὶ διδάξῃ οὕτως τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἐλάχιστος κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν ὃς δ’ ἂν ποιήσῃ καὶ διδάξῃ οὗτος μέγας κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν

20For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

20λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ περισσεύσῃ ὑμῶν ἡ δικαιοσύνη πλεῖον τῶν γραμματέων καὶ Φαρισαίων οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν

21"You have heard that it was said to an older generation, 'Do not murder,' and 'whoever murders will be subjected to judgment.'

21Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη τοῖς ἀρχαίοις Οὐ φονεύσεις ὃς δ’ ἂν φονεύσῃ ἔνοχος ἔσται τῇ κρίσει

22But I say to you that anyone who is angry with a brother will be subjected to judgment. And whoever insults a brother will be brought before the council, and whoever says 'Fool' will be sent to fiery hell.

22ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ὀργιζόμενος τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ ἔνοχος ἔσται τῇ κρίσει ὃς δ’ ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ Ῥακά ἔνοχος ἔσται τῷ συνεδρίῳ ὃς δ’ ἂν εἴπῃ Μωρέ ἔνοχος ἔσται εἰς τὴν γέενναν τοῦ πυρός

23So then, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,

23Ἐὰν οὖν προσφέρῃς τὸ δῶρόν σου ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον κἀκεῖ μνησθῇς ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἔχει τι κατὰ σοῦ

24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother and then come and present your gift.

24ἄφες ἐκεῖ τὸ δῶρόν σου ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ ὕπαγε πρῶτον διαλλάγηθι τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου καὶ τότε ἐλθὼν πρόσφερε τὸ δῶρόν σου

25Reach agreement quickly with your accuser while on the way to court, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the warden, and you will be thrown into prison.

25ἴσθι εὐνοῶν τῷ ἀντιδίκῳ σου ταχὺ ἕως ὅτου εἶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ μή‿ ποτέ σε παραδῷ ὁ ἀντίδικος τῷ κριτῇ καὶ ὁ κριτὴς τῷ ὑπηρέτῃ καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν βληθήσῃ

26I tell you the truth, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny!

26ἀμὴν λέγω σοι οὐ μὴ ἐξέλθῃς ἐκεῖθεν ἕως ἂν ἀποδῷς τὸν ἔσχατον κοδράντην

27"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'

27Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη Οὐ μοιχεύσεις

28But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

28ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ βλέπων γυναῖκα πρὸς τὸ ἐπιθυμῆσαι αὐτὴν ἤδη ἐμοίχευσεν αὐτὴν ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ

29If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into hell.

29εἰ δὲ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου ὁ δεξιὸς σκανδαλίζει σε ἔξελε αὐτὸν καὶ βάλε ἀπὸ σοῦ συμφέρει γάρ σοι ἵνα ἀπόληται ἓν τῶν μελῶν σου καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου βληθῇ εἰς γέενναν

30If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into hell.

30καὶ εἰ ἡ δεξιά σου χεὶρ σκανδαλίζει σε ἔκκοψον αὐτὴν καὶ βάλε ἀπὸ σοῦ συμφέρει γάρ σοι ἵνα ἀπόληται ἓν τῶν μελῶν σου καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου εἰς γέενναν ἀπέλθῃ

31"It was said, 'Whoever divorces his wife must give her a legal document.'

31Ἐρρέθη δέ Ὃς ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ δότω αὐτῇ ἀποστάσιον

32But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

32ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ἀπολύων τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ παρεκτὸς λόγου πορνείας ποιεῖ αὐτὴν μοιχευθῆναι καὶ ὃς ἐὰν ἀπολελυμένην γαμήσῃ μοιχᾶται

33"Again, you have heard that it was said to an older generation, 'Do not break an oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.'

33Πάλιν ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη τοῖς ἀρχαίοις Οὐκ ἐπιορκήσεις ἀποδώσεις δὲ τῷ Κυρίῳ τοὺς ὅρκους σου

34But I say to you, do not take oaths at all--not by heaven, because it is the throne of God,

34ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ ὀμόσαι ὅλως μήτε ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ὅτι θρόνος ἐστὶν τοῦ Θεοῦ

35not by earth, because it is his footstool, and not by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King.

35μήτε ἐν τῇ γῇ ὅτι ὑποπόδιόν ἐστιν τῶν ποδῶν αὐτοῦ μήτε εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ὅτι πόλις ἐστὶν τοῦ μεγάλου Βασιλέως

36Do not take an oath by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.

36μήτε ἐν τῇ κεφαλῇ σου ὀμόσῃς ὅτι οὐ δύνασαι μίαν τρίχα λευκὴν ποιῆσαι ἢ μέλαιναν

37Let your word be 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no.' More than this is from the evil one.

37ἔστω δὲ ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν Ναὶ ναί οὒ Οὔ τὸ δὲ περισσὸν τούτων ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ ἐστιν

38"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'

38Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη Ὀφθαλμὸν ἀντὶ ὀφθαλμοῦ καὶ ὀδόντα ἀντὶ ὀδόντος

39But I say to you, do not resist the evildoer. But whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well.

39ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ ἀντιστῆναι τῷ πονηρῷ ἀλλ’ ὅστις σε ῥαπίζει εἰς τὴν δεξιὰν σιαγόνα σου στρέψον αὐτῷ καὶ τὴν ἄλλην

40And if someone wants to sue you and to take your tunic, give him your coat also.

40καὶ τῷ θέλοντί σοι κριθῆναι καὶ τὸν χιτῶνά σου λαβεῖν ἄφες αὐτῷ καὶ τὸ ἱμάτιον

41And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two.

41καὶ ὅστις σε ἀγγαρεύσει μίλιον ἕν ὕπαγε μετ’ αὐτοῦ δύο

42Give to the one who asks you, and do not reject the one who wants to borrow from you.

42τῷ αἰτοῦντί σε δός καὶ τὸν θέλοντα ἀπὸ σοῦ δανίσασθαι μὴ ἀποστραφῇς

43"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor' and 'hate your enemy.'

43Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου καὶ μισήσεις τὸν ἐχθρόν σου

44But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you,

44ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν καὶ προσεύχεσθε ὑπὲρ τῶν διωκόντων ὑμᾶς ⧼εὐλογεῖτε τοὺς καταρωμένους ὑμᾶς καλῶς ποιεῖτε τοῖς ἐπηρεαζόντων ὑμᾶς καὶ μισοῦσιν ὑμᾶς⧽

45so that you may be like your Father in heaven, since he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

45ὅπως γένησθε υἱοὶ τοῦ Πατρὸς ὑμῶν τοῦ ἐν οὐρανοῖς ὅτι τὸν ἥλιον αὐτοῦ ἀνατέλλει ἐπὶ πονηροὺς καὶ ἀγαθοὺς καὶ βρέχει ἐπὶ δικαίους καὶ ἀδίκους

46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors do the same, don't they?

46ἐὰν γὰρ ἀγαπήσητε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς τίνα μισθὸν ἔχετε οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ τελῶναι τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν

47And if you only greet your brothers, what more do you do? Even the Gentiles do the same, don't they?

47καὶ ἐὰν ἀσπάσησθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑμῶν μόνον τί περισσὸν ποιεῖτε οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ ἐθνικοὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν

48So then, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

48Ἔσεσθε οὖν ὑμεῖς τέλειοι ὡς ὁ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος τέλειός ἐστιν
