Job’s Character and Wealth

There was a man in the land of Uz

Uz was likely east or southeast of Israel, in or near the region later associated with Edom. The setting places Job outside Israel and shows that the true God was known and honored beyond the covenant nation.

whose name was Job.

Job is introduced without a genealogy or national identification. His name may mean “persecuted” or “hated.” The account centers on his character, his suffering, and God’s dealings with him.

Job held God in reverent awe and deliberately turned away from what was wicked. His conduct showed that his devotion to God shaped both his worship and his daily life.

He had seven sons and three daughters,

Job’s large family displayed the prosperity and honor he possessed before his trials began. In the ancient Near East, children were regarded as a great blessing, providing strength to the household, labor for its estates, and continuity for the family name. Seven sons and three daughters present Job’s household as full and well established, with seven suggesting completeness and three divine wholeness. When Job later received the same number of children after his suffering, the restored family confirmed that the Lord had renewed His blessing upon him.

Satan’s First Attack

One day

A definite occasion came when events in the heavenly realm unfolded according to God’s purpose.

Job 2:1 On another day the sons of God came to present themselves…
1Ki 22:19 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD:…

the sons of God

Angelic beings assembled in God’s presence as servants accountable to their Creator.

Job 38:7 while the morning stars sang together…
Gen 6:2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men…

came to present themselves

The gathering reflects order within God’s rule, as these beings appeared before Him to receive or report on their assignments.

1Sa 10:19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you…
Jos 24:1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.…

before the LORD,

The scene centers on the sovereign authority of YHWH, whose rule extends over heaven and earth.

Psa 42:2 My soul thirsts for God, the living God.…
Psa 84:7 They go from strength to strength, until each…

and Satan also came with them.

Satan appeared among the angels as the adversary or accuser, not as an equal rival to God, but as one subject to His authority. His arrival introduces the challenge that would test Job’s integrity.

Zec 3:1 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest…
1Ch 21:1 Then Satan rose up against Israel and incited David…

“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan.

The LORD does not ask because He lacks knowledge, but because Satan must give an account before Him. Satan appears among the heavenly beings under God’s authority, showing that even this rebellious adversary remains subject to the Lord’s rule.

Zec 3:1-2 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest…
1Ki 22:19-22 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD:…
Gen 3:9 But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”

“From roaming through the earth,” he replied,

Satan reports his movement throughout the world, where he opposes God’s purposes and seeks occasions to accuse and destroy. His activity is restless and hostile toward mankind.

1Pe 5:8 Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil…
Rev 12:9-12 And the great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent…
Zec 1:10-11 Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained,…

“and walking back and forth in it.”

Satan’s answer portrays deliberate surveillance of the earth as he searches for targets. It prepares for the testing of Job, in which Satan will challenge the reality of Job’s fear of God, yet only within limits set by the LORD.

Dan 12:4 But you, Daniel, shut up these words and seal the book…
Zec 4:10 For who has despised the day of small things?…
Amo 8:12 People will stagger from sea to sea and roam…

Then the LORD said to Satan,

The LORD presides over the heavenly court and initiates the exchange, demonstrating His authority even over Satan. Satan can appear before God, but he remains subject to God’s rule and cannot act apart from divine permission.

Zec 3:2 And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan!…

Luk 4:8 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord…

“Have you considered My servant Job?

The LORD directs Satan’s attention to Job, whom He openly identifies as His servant. Job’s life stands as a clear answer to Satan’s accusation that people serve God only for personal gain.

Job 42:7-8 After the LORD had spoken these words to Job,…
Num 12:7 But this is not so with My servant Moses;…

For there is no one on earth like him,

Job was distinguished among the people of his day for his faithful devotion to God. The coming trial would reveal whether that devotion would endure when prosperity and protection were removed.

2Ki 18:5 Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel.…
Ezk 14:14 then even if these three men—Noah, Daniel, and Job—…

Job was not sinless, but his life was marked by integrity before God and honest conduct toward others. His character was genuine rather than outward religious appearance.

who fears God and shuns evil.”

Job reverenced God and deliberately turned away from evil. These qualities explain why Satan sought to test him and why Job’s suffering became a test of faith rather than punishment for hidden wickedness.

Job 28:28 And He said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord…
Pro 16:6 By loving devotion and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for,…
Pro 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD…

Satan answered the LORD,

Satan appears before God’s heavenly court as the accuser, permitted to speak but wholly subject to God’s authority. His challenge sets in motion the testing of Job’s faith.

Job 2:4 “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give up”…
Zec 3:1-2 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest…

“Does Job fear God for nothing?

Satan charges that Job’s devotion depends on the prosperity, protection, and honor God has given him. He contends that suffering will reveal Job’s faith to be self-serving rather than rooted in reverence for God.

Job 21:15 Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him…
Mal 3:14 You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God.…
Psa 73:13 Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure;…

Have You not placed a hedge on every side around him

Satan recognizes that Job’s safety and prosperity rest under God’s active protection. Nothing has been allowed to threaten Job without God’s permission.

God’s care has extended to Job’s family, servants, and the entire household under his authority, reflecting the security of a well-established patriarchal estate.

Gen 18:19 For I have chosen him, so that he will…
Psa 128:3-4 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine, flourishing…

and all that he owns?

Job’s livestock, land, servants, and other possessions have been preserved and prospered. Satan presents these blessings as the reason for Job’s devotion.

1Sa 25:6 Long life to you, and peace to you and to your house…
Ecc 5:19 Furthermore, God has given riches and wealth…
Pro 24:3-4 By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding…

You have blessed the work of his hands,

Job’s success has not come from effort alone but from God’s favor upon his labor and responsibilities.

Deu 28:12 The LORD will open the heavens, His abundant storehouse,…
Psa 90:17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us…
Pro 16:3 Commit your works to the LORD and your plans…

and his possessions have increased in the land.

Job’s wealth has grown greatly throughout the region, making the coming loss of his estate a severe test of whether he will continue to fear God apart from earthly blessing.

Gen 26:12-13 Now Isaac sowed seed in the land, and that very year…
Gen 24:35 The LORD has greatly blessed my master…
Pro 10:22 The blessing of the LORD enriches, and He…

But stretch out Your hand

Satan challenges God to remove the protection and blessing surrounding Job. He assumes that Job’s devotion depends on the benefits he receives rather than on genuine reverence for God.

Psa 138:7 If I walk in the midst of trouble, You preserve me…
Exo 3:20 So I will stretch out My hand and strike the Egyptians…
Ezk 25:13 and from Teman to Dedan they will fall by the sword…

and strike all that he has,

Job’s family, servants, livestock, and possessions represent the visible signs of his prosperity. Their loss would test whether Job would remain faithful when every earthly support was taken away.

Heb 10:34 You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted…
Deu 28:31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes,…
Deu 28:33 A people you do not know will eat the produce of your land…

and he will surely curse You to Your face.”

Satan claims that suffering will expose Job’s faith as self-serving and lead him to openly reject God. The accusation frames the conflict of the book: whether a righteous man will honor God even when obedience brings loss rather than blessing.

Job 2:5 But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones…
Job 2:9 Then Job’s wife said to him, “Do you still retain…
Rev 16:9 And the people were scorched by intense heat,…

“Very well,” said the LORD to Satan.

The LORD permitted the test while remaining fully sovereign over its outcome. Satan could act only within the limits God established.

Job 2:6 “Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “He is in your hands…”…
1Ki 22:22-23 And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit…
Luk 22:31-32 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you like wheat.…

“Everything he has is in your hands,

Satan received authority to strike Job’s wealth, household, and livelihood. Job’s coming losses would not be random disasters but part of a test allowed by God.

Jhn 19:11 Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me”…
2Ti 2:26 Then they will come to their senses and escape…
Luk 22:53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,…

but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.”

Job’s person and life remained under God’s protection. The boundary made clear that Satan’s power was real but restricted.

1Sa 26:9 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him…
Psa 105:15 “Do not touch My anointed ones! Do no harm to My prophets!”
Deu 32:39 See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me…

Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

Satan left the heavenly court to carry out the permitted assault, beginning the events that would test whether Job feared God only because of blessing.

Mic 1:16 Shave yourselves bald and cut off your hair in mourning…

He fell to the ground

His grief led him into a posture of humility and submission. Though the disasters had come through human violence and natural forces, Job recognized that his life remained under God’s authority.

Jos 5:14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander…”…
Gen 17:3 Then Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,

and worshiped,

Job did not curse God or abandon his faith. In the first moments after losing nearly everything, he bowed before the Lord, acknowledging God as worthy of worship even in sorrow.

2Ch 20:18 Then Jehoshaphat bowed facedown, and all the people of Judah…
1Ch 29:20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Bless the LORD…

Human life begins in complete dependence. Job had entered the world without possessions, status, or power, receiving every earthly blessing only afterward.

Psa 139:13 For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together…
1Ti 6:7 For we brought nothing into the world…

and naked I will return.

Death strips away all that has been accumulated in life. Job understood that his wealth, children, and health were never permanent possessions under his control.

The LORD gave,

The prosperity Job had known—his family, livestock, servants, and honor—had come from God’s hand. He regarded these gifts as entrusted blessings rather than personal rights.

and the LORD has taken away.

Although Satan had carried out the attacks, Job recognized that nothing had occurred outside God’s sovereign authority. He did not deny the reality of evil or his sorrow, but he refused to charge God with wrongdoing.

1Sa 2:6-7 The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down…
Deu 32:39 See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me…
Psa 104:29 When You hide Your face, they are terrified;…

Blessed be the name of the LORD.”

In the first shock of overwhelming loss, Job honored God’s character and rule. His worship did not arise from indifference to suffering, but from faith that God remained worthy of blessing even when His purposes were hidden.

Psa 113:2 Blessed be the name of the LORD both now and forevermore.
Neh 9:5 Then the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah…
Psa 72:19 And blessed be His glorious name forever; may all the earth…

In all this,

Job had lost his oxen, donkeys, sheep, camels, servants, and all ten of his children in a single day. The disasters came through human violence and natural forces, yet they occurred within the testing God had permitted.

Job did not sin

Grief did not drive Job to abandon the Lord or reject his former faithfulness. Though deeply wounded, he continued to acknowledge God’s authority over all he had received and lost.

or charge God with wrongdoing.

Job did not accuse God of acting unjustly or condemn Him for the calamities that had fallen on his household. His response showed trust in God’s righteousness even when he could not understand His purposes.

Rom 9:14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Certainly not!
Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just.…
