Then the man brought me to the front of the temple by way of the north gate.

Ezekiel’s angelic guide led him into the inner court through the north gate, bringing him before the temple itself. Ezk 9:2 And I saw six men coming from the Upper Gate,…

Reproof of the Levites

Tell the rebellious house of Israel

Israel had repeatedly abandoned the covenant through idolatry, injustice, and disregard for God’s commands. Though chosen to bear His name among the nations, the people often adopted the practices of the surrounding peoples.

Ezk 2:5 And whether they listen or refuse to listen…
Ezk 12:2 “Son of man, you are living in a rebellious house…

that this is what the Lord GOD says:

Ezekiel spoke with God’s authority, delivering a message of judgment against the nation’s ongoing unfaithfulness.

Ezk 5:5 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘This is Jerusalem…
Ezk 11:5 And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me…

‘I have had enough of all your abominations,

Their offenses included idol worship and the corruption of worship at the temple. God’s patience had not meant approval; their continued rebellion had brought them to the point of judgment.

Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Ezk 7:3 The end is now upon you, and I will unleash My anger.…

O house of Israel.

The nation as a whole stood accountable before God. Israel’s privileged place in His covenant also required obedience to His holy standards.

Ezk 20:31 When you offer your gifts, sacrificing your sons in the fire…
Ezk 36:22 Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is…

In addition to all your other abominations,

Israel’s desecration of the temple stood within a long record of idolatry and covenant rebellion.

Ezk 8:9-17 Then He said to me, “Go in and see the wicked abominations…

Lev 18:24-30 Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices,…

2Ch 26:16-21 But when Uzziah became powerful, his arrogance…

Lev 7:23-27 “Speak to the Israelites and say, ‘You are not to eat…
Deu 12:16 But you must not eat the blood; pour it on the ground…

you broke My covenant.

By disregarding God’s commands for worship, holiness, and priestly service, Israel violated the covenant that governed its relationship with the Lord.

Deu 31:16 And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest…
Jer 31:32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers…
Lev 26:15 and if you reject My statutes, despise My ordinances…

And you have not kept charge of My holy things,

Israel’s priests had neglected the duties God assigned for the care of His sanctuary, its sacrifices, and its worship. Their disregard for God’s commands reflected the nation’s wider rebellion and contributed to the defilement of the temple.

Num 18:5-7 And you shall attend to the duties of the sanctuary…
Ezk 43:19 You are to give a young bull from the herd as a sin offering…
Lev 22:2 Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect…

but have appointed others to keep charge of My sanctuary for you.’

Rather than serving according to God’s order, they allowed unauthorized foreigners to perform sacred duties. The priests had surrendered their responsibility and compromised the holiness required in God’s house.

Num 1:50-53 Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle…
Num 18:4 They are to join you and attend to the duties of the Tent…
1Ch 23:28-32 but their duty was to assist the descendants of Aaron…

This is what the Lord GOD says:

God speaks with sovereign authority, declaring His standard for worship in the restored temple. The command is not a human regulation but part of His order for preserving the holiness of His dwelling place.

Ezk 2:4 They are obstinate and stubborn children.…
Ezk 3:11 Go to your people, the exiles; speak to them…
Ezk 20:3 Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel…

No foreigner uncircumcised in heart and flesh

Those admitted to temple service and worship must show both covenant obedience outwardly and genuine devotion inwardly. Physical circumcision alone could not qualify anyone whose heart remained resistant to God.

not even a foreigner who lives among the Israelites.

Residence in Israel did not grant covenant privileges apart from submission to God’s requirements. Foreigners could be received among God’s people, but they could not disregard the covenant and enter the sanctuary on their own terms.

Israel’s priests abandoned their calling to serve the LORD and participated in the idol worship that had corrupted the nation. Rather than guarding the holiness of the sanctuary and directing the people toward covenant faithfulness, they joined in the practices God had forbidden.

The arrangement upheld God’s holiness, provided for the temple’s operation, and reminded Israel that service before the Lord required obedience.

Wool was excluded because it caused sweating in the heat of temple service. The priests were to serve in suitable linen garments, avoiding anything associated with the burdensome labor and uncleanness of ordinary life.

When they go out to the outer court, to the people,

When the priests left the inner court, where they performed their duties before the Lord, and entered the outer court among the people, they were to observe regulations that preserved the holiness and proper order of temple worship.

Lev 10:10 You must distinguish between the holy and the common…
Lev 22:2 Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect…

The garments worn during priestly service belonged exclusively to that service and were not to be used in ordinary settings.

and dress in other clothes

The change of clothing marked the end of their temple duties before they entered among the people.

so that they do not transmit holiness to the people with their garments.

What had been set apart for service in God’s presence was not to be carried casually into common use. The command preserved the boundary between what was holy and what was ordinary.

They must not shave their heads

The priests were to avoid shaving associated with mourning and pagan religious customs. Their appearance was to mark them as set apart for service in the sanctuary.

Lev 21:5 Priests must not make bald spots on their heads,…
Deu 14:1 You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut yourselves…

or let their hair grow long,

They were also forbidden to allow their hair to become unkempt. Those who ministered before the Lord were to reflect discipline and proper order.

Num 6:5 For the entire period of his vow of separation,…
Lev 21:10 The priest who is highest among his brothers,…

but must carefully trim their hair.

A neat, moderate appearance distinguished the priests from both pagan ritual practices and personal neglect, fitting their holy responsibilities.

No priest may drink wine

Priests were required to remain sober while carrying out their service before the Lord. Though wine was common in Israel’s daily life, it was forbidden when priestly duties were about to begin so that no impairment would affect judgment, ritual purity, or the careful handling of holy things.

before he enters the inner court.

The inner court was the sacred area of the temple reserved for priests performing sacrifices and other duties at the altar. Entering it demanded readiness, self-control, and reverence because the priests ministered in the presence of God on behalf of the people.

Lev 16:2 And the LORD said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron…
Exo 30:19-21 with which Aaron and his sons are to wash…
Heb 9:7 But only the high priest entered the second room,…

And they shall not marry a widow or a divorced woman,

The priests serving in the restored temple were held to standards that visibly marked their consecration to the Lord. Marriage was part of their public witness, and they were not to enter unions that conflicted with the distinct requirements of their office.

Lev 21:14 He is not to marry a widow, a divorced woman…
Lev 21:7 A priest must not marry a woman defiled by prostitution…
Deu 24:1-4 If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing…

but must marry a virgin of the descendants of the house of Israel,

A bride from Israel preserved the priestly household within the covenant people. Marriage to a virgin reflected the holiness expected of those who taught God’s statutes and ministered before Him.

Lev 21:13 The woman he marries must be a virgin.
Gen 24:16 Now the girl was very beautiful, a virgin…

or a widow of a priest.

A priest’s widow was permitted because she had already belonged to a household ordered by priestly service. The provision upheld the sanctity of the priesthood while providing for women connected to the priestly community.

Num 18:11-13 And this is yours as well: the offering of their gifts…

They are to teach My people

The Levitical priests were appointed to instruct Israel in God’s law and to preserve faithful worship. Their teaching helped the nation live under the covenant and recognize the demands of God’s holiness.

Lev 10:11 so that you may teach the Israelites…
Deu 33:10 He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law…
Mal 2:7 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge…

the difference between the holy and the common

What belonged to God and was set apart for His service was not to be treated as ordinary. Priestly instruction guarded the sanctity of the temple, its sacrifices, and the worshiping community.

Lev 10:10 You must distinguish between the holy and the common…
1Sa 21:4-6 “There is no common bread on hand,” the priest replied,…
Hag 2:12-13 If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment…

and show them how to discern between the clean and the unclean.

The priests also taught the regulations governing ritual purity, including matters of food, disease, and contact with defilement. These distinctions reminded Israel that access to a holy God required obedience and cleansing.

Lev 11:47 You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean…
Lev 13:59 This is the law concerning a mildew contamination…
Lev 14:57 to determine when something is clean or unclean.…

In any dispute, they shall officiate as judges

Priests were to settle disputes among the people, applying God’s revealed standard rather than personal preference or local custom. Their judicial responsibility supported order in the restored community and required impartiality, discernment, and faithfulness.

Deu 1:16-17 At that time I charged your judges: “Hear the disputes…
Exo 18:21-26 Furthermore, select capable men from among the people…
2Ch 19:5-7 He appointed judges in the land, in each of the fortified…

and judge according to My ordinances.

God’s ordinances governed both worship and daily life in Israel. Justice was to reflect His righteousness, protecting the innocent, restraining wrongdoing, and preserving covenant order.

Deu 17:8-13 If a case is too difficult for you to judge,…
Mal 2:7 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge…
Lev 10:10-11 You must distinguish between the holy and the common…

They must keep My laws and statutes regarding all My appointed feasts,

The priests were responsible to observe and safeguard the sacred calendar established by God. These feasts reminded Israel of the Lord’s acts of redemption, provision, and covenant faithfulness, while directing the nation’s worship according to His command.

Lev 23:1-4 Then the LORD said to Moses,…
Exo 23:14-17 Three times a year you are to celebrate a feast to Me.…
Deu 16:16-17 Three times a year all your men appear before the LORD…

and they must keep My Sabbaths holy.

Sabbath observance set Israel apart as a people belonging to the Lord. By honoring the Sabbath, the priests modeled reverence for God’s authority, rest from ordinary labor, and devotion to holy worship.

Exo 31:13-17 Tell the Israelites, ‘Surely you must keep My Sabbaths,…
Lev 19:30 You must keep My Sabbaths and have reverence for My sanctuary.…
Exo 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.…

A priest must not defile himself by going near a dead person.

Priests serving in the restored temple were to avoid ritual defilement from the dead, preserving the holiness required for ministry before the Lord. Death, the consequence of sin, stood in contrast to the life and purity associated with God’s sanctuary.

Lev 21:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron’s sons…
Num 19:11 Whoever touches any dead body will be unclean…
Lev 22:4 If a descendant of Aaron has a skin disease or a discharge,…

However, for a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a brother, or an unmarried sister, he may do so,

Priests could mourn and care for the burial of their closest relatives. The exception upheld family responsibility while limiting defilement to immediate kin. An unmarried sister remained within her father’s household and under the protection of her male relatives, making her inclusion consistent with Israel’s family order.

Lev 21:2-3 except for his immediate family—his mother, father……
Lev 21:11 He must not go near any dead body; he must not defile…
Num 6:6-7 Throughout the days of his separation to the LORD,…

and after he is cleansed,

The phrase “and after he is cleansed” indicates that a priest who became unclean through permitted contact with a close relative’s body had to complete the prescribed purification before returning to service.

Num 19:12 He must purify himself with the water on the third day…
Num 6:9-10 If someone suddenly dies in his presence…
Lev 21:1-4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron’s sons…

he must count off seven days for himself.

The full week marked the completion of his cleansing and ensured that he reentered the sanctuary only after restoring ceremonial purity.

Lev 15:13 When the man has been cleansed from his discharge…
Num 19:19 The man who is ceremonially clean is to sprinkle…
Lev 14:8-9 The one being cleansed must wash his clothes,…

And on the day he goes into the sanctuary,

The priest was required to prepare himself whenever he approached the Lord’s holy dwelling, recognizing that service before God could not be treated as ordinary work.

Lev 16:17 No one may be in the Tent of Meeting from the time…
Exo 28:35 Aaron must wear the robe whenever he ministers,…
Heb 9:7 But only the high priest entered the second room,…

into the inner court,

This restricted area was set apart for priestly ministry and marked a higher degree of holiness within the temple.

Ezk 8:16 So He brought me to the inner court of the house of the LORD…
Ezk 40:32 And he brought me to the inner court on the east side,…
1Ki 6:36 Solomon built the inner courtyard with three rows…

to minister in the sanctuary,

His duties included the sacrifices and other appointed acts of worship carried out on behalf of the people.

Num 8:15 After you have cleansed them and presented them…
Num 18:7 But only you and your sons shall attend to your priesthood…
Heb 9:6 When everything had been prepared in this way,…

he must present his sin offering,

Even the priest needed atonement before serving in God’s presence, since he remained a sinful man despite his sacred office.

Lev 16:11 When Aaron presents the bull for his sin offering…
Lev 16:6 Aaron is to present the bull for his sin offering…
Lev 4:3 If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people…

declares the Lord GOD.

The requirement came from God Himself and governed the priesthood’s access to the sanctuary.

Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…
Ezk 24:14 I, the LORD, have spoken; the time is coming…

In regard to their inheritance,

In regard to their inheritance, the priests were not assigned a tribal territory as their permanent estate. Their service at the sanctuary set them apart from Israel’s ordinary pattern of landholding.

Deu 18:1-2 The Levitical priests shall have no portion…
Jos 13:14 To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance…

I am their inheritance.

The Lord Himself was their appointed portion. Their security and provision rested on their covenant relationship with Him and on the support He established through Israel’s offerings.

Num 18:20 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance…
Deu 10:9 That is why Levi has no portion or inheritance…

You are to give them no possession in Israel,

They were not to receive any additional landholding that might distract from or replace their sacred duties. The nation was responsible to provide for those who served before the Lord.

Num 18:23-24 The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting…
Jos 13:33 To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance.…

for I am their possession.

God remained the priests’ true portion, placing their calling and welfare under His direct care.

Psa 16:5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup;…
Psa 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is my portion…

They shall eat the grain offerings, the sin offerings, and the guilt offerings.

The sons of Zadok were granted portions of these holy offerings as their appointed provision. Having remained faithful when other Levites went astray, they alone were permitted to minister near the LORD in the temple. Their share in the offerings supported them in their service and marked their participation in the sacrificial ministry through which Israel’s uncleanness and guilt were addressed. The grain offering expressed dedication and thanksgiving, while the sin and guilt offerings provided atonement and spiritual cleansing. The offerings ultimately anticipate Christ’s sufficient sacrifice, which accomplished the atonement they could only portray.

Num 18:9-10 A portion of the most holy offerings reserved from the fire…
Lev 6:16-18 Aaron and his sons are to eat the remainder.…
Lev 7:6-7 Every male among the priests may eat of it.…

Everything in Israel devoted to the LORD will belong to them.

Gifts and property set apart for the LORD were assigned to the priests, who received no tribal land inheritance. Their livelihood came from what God provided through Israel’s worship and consecrated gifts. This arrangement upheld the priests in their continual service before the LORD and distinguished what belonged to holy use from ordinary possession.

Num 18:14 Every devoted thing in Israel belongs to you.
Lev 27:21 When the field is released in the Jubilee…
Lev 27:28-29 Nothing that a man sets apart to the LORD from all he owns…

The best of all the firstfruits and of every contribution from all your offerings will belong to the priests.

The priests were to receive the choicest portions of Israel’s produce and offerings as their God-appointed provision for temple service. Giving the first and best acknowledged that the land, harvest, and increase belonged to the Lord.

Num 18:12-13 I give you all the freshest olive oil…
Num 18:29 You must present the offering due the LORD…
Deu 18:4 You are to give them the firstfruits of your grain,…

You are to give your first batch of dough to the priest,

Even the preparation of daily bread was included in this obligation. The first portion of the dough was set apart for the priest, joining ordinary household life to the worship and service of God.

Num 15:20-21 From the first of your dough, you are to lift up a cake…
Neh 10:37-38 Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms…
Rom 11:16 If the first part of the dough is holy, so is the batch…

so that a blessing may rest upon your homes.

Faithful obedience would bring the Lord’s favor upon Israelite households. The offering did not purchase blessing, but demonstrated covenant faithfulness and dependence upon God’s provision.

Pro 3:9-10 Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits…
Deu 28:8 The LORD will decree a blessing on your barns…
Mal 3:10-11 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse…

The priests may not eat any bird or animal found dead or torn by wild beasts.

Priests serving in the restored temple were required to avoid carrion and animals killed by predators. Such meat could not be properly drained of blood and was associated with death and ceremonial defilement. The requirement preserved the distinction between what was clean and unclean and kept those responsible for temple service prepared for their duties. In Ezekiel’s vision, the renewed priesthood was to uphold God’s standards faithfully, reflecting His holiness before the people.

Lev 22:8 He must not eat anything found dead or torn by wild animals,…
Exo 22:31 You are to be My holy people. You must not eat the meat…
Deu 14:21 You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.…
