Ecclesiastes 3
Berean Study Bible

To Everything There Is a Season

To everything there is a season,

God has appointed times and seasons within His ordered creation. Human life unfolds in changing periods of work, joy, sorrow, growth, and decline, none of which lie outside His sovereign rule. The familiar cycles of planting and harvest reflected the daily life of Israel and testified to the dependability of God’s ordering of the world.

Dan 2:21 He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings…
Act 1:7 Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons…
Psa 104:19 He made the moon to mark the seasons…

and a time for every purpose under heaven:

Every earthly matter has its proper place within God’s providence. People experience events in time and often cannot see their full purpose, yet God governs the course of life under heaven according to His wisdom.

Act 17:26 From one man He made every nation of men,…
Eph 1:11 In Him we were also chosen as God’s own,…
Est 4:14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief…

a time to be born and a time to die,

God governs the boundaries of human life. Birth begins a life given by Him, and death marks the mortality that entered the world through sin. No one escapes this order, yet death is not the final word for those who belong to Christ, who gives resurrection and eternal life.

Ecc 7:1 A good name is better than fine perfume,…
Psa 139:13-16 For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together…
Heb 9:27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that…

a time to plant and a time to uproot,

Israel’s agricultural life depended on recognizing God’s appointed seasons. Fields were planted for harvest and cleared when their usefulness had ended or the land required rest. The same order is seen in human affairs: God brings growth, establishes work, and at times removes what has completed its purpose.

Jer 1:10 See, I have appointed you today over nations and kingdoms…
Jer 24:6 I will build them up and not tear them down…
Mat 15:13 But Jesus replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father…

a time to kill and a time to heal,

Human life includes seasons when justice must be carried out and times when wounds must be restored. In Israel’s history, killing occurred in lawful warfare and in the punishment of serious crimes under God’s covenant law, not as permission for personal violence. Healing follows suffering, conflict, and judgment, bringing restoration to bodies, communities, and relationships. God governs both justice and mercy.

Deu 32:39 See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me…
1Sa 2:6 The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down…
Job 5:18 For He wounds, but He also binds; He strikes…

a time to break down and a time to build,

Cities, walls, homes, and even the temple could be torn down through judgment, war, or necessary change. Israel experienced both the destruction of Jerusalem and the later rebuilding of its temple and defenses. Breaking down may also involve the removal of corrupt practices and false security, while building marks renewal, order, and strengthened worship.

Jer 1:10 See, I have appointed you today over nations and kingdoms…
Amo 9:11 “In that day I will restore the fallen tent of David.”…
Isa 58:12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins;…

a time to weep and a time to laugh,

Weeping belongs to seasons of grief, loss, and repentance, when sorrow must be honestly faced before God. Laughter belongs to seasons of joy, relief, and fulfilled hope. Human life includes both, under God’s sovereign ordering of its seasons.

Luk 6:21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled.…
Jhn 16:20 Truly, truly, I tell you, you will weep and wail…
Psa 126:5 Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy.

a time to mourn and a time to dance,

Mourning was openly expressed through lament, fasting, and customary signs of sorrow. Dancing marked public celebration, thanksgiving, and worship, as when David rejoiced before the Lord when the ark was brought to Jerusalem. God appoints seasons of sorrow as well as seasons of restoration and gladness.

Psa 30:11 You turned my mourning into dancing; You peeled off…
Mat 11:17 We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;…
Isa 61:3 to console the mourners in Zion—to give them a crown…

a time to cast away stones

Fields often had to be cleared before cultivation, removing what hindered planting and growth. The image also fits seasons of tearing down, when obstacles, burdens, or defilement must be removed.

Ezk 26:12 They will plunder your wealth and pillage your merchandise.…
Mat 24:2 “Do you see all these things?” He replied.…
Luk 19:44 They will level you to the ground—you and the children…

and a time to gather stones together,

Stones were gathered for walls, altars, markers, and memorials. Such work belonged to seasons of building, preserving remembrance, and establishing what would endure.

Gen 31:46 and he said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.”…
Jos 4:20 And there at Gilgal Joshua set up the twelve…
Isa 62:10 Build it up, build up the highway; clear away the stones;…

a time to embrace

Embracing expressed affection, welcome, reconciliation, and family loyalty. It belonged to times of peace and restored fellowship.

Gen 45:14 Then Joseph threw his arms around his brother Benjamin…
Gen 33:4 Esau, however, ran to him and embraced him…
Luk 15:20 So he got up and went to his father…

and a time to refrain from embracing,

Separation, mourning, conflict, ceremonial uncleanness, or necessary restraint could make physical closeness inappropriate. Wisdom recognizes that love includes both nearness and proper boundaries.

1Co 7:5 Do not deprive each other, except by mutual consent…
Gen 20:6 Then God said to Abimelech in the dream,…
Exo 19:15 “Be prepared for the third day,” he said to the people.…

a time to search

Life includes seasons of diligent pursuit—seeking what is needed, recovering what has been lost, or pursuing wisdom, truth, and direction.

Luk 15:8-10 Or what woman who has ten silver coins…
Pro 2:4-5 if you seek it like silver and search it out…
Mat 7:7-8 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;…

and a time to count as lost,

There are also times when continued pursuit is fruitless, and wisdom requires accepting the loss rather than exhausting strength and resources on what cannot be restored.

Php 3:7-8 But whatever was gain to me I count as loss…
Luk 14:33 any one of you who does not give up everything he has…
Mat 16:25-26 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it,…

a time to keep

God entrusts people with responsibilities, possessions, relationships, and truth that should be guarded faithfully.

Pro 4:13 Hold on to instruction; do not let go. Guard it…
Jhn 17:12 While I was with them, I protected and preserved them…
2Ti 1:14 Guard the treasure entrusted to you, with the help…

and a time to discard,

Other things must be released: what is worn out, harmful, corrupt, or no longer suited to the work God has given. Discernment recognizes both the value of preserving what is good and the necessity of letting go.

Mat 10:14 And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words…
Heb 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud…
Col 3:8 But now you must put aside anger, rage, malice…

a time to tear and a time to mend,

Tearing garments marked grief, shock, and repentance in Israel, as when Jacob believed Joseph had died and when David mourned Saul and Jonathan. Such seasons acknowledge real loss and brokenness. Mending follows when what has been damaged can be repaired, portraying restoration, reconciliation, and the renewal God brings after sorrow.

Hos 6:1 Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us…
Mat 9:16 No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment.…
Mrk 2:21 No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment.…

a time to be silent and a time to speak,

Silence may be fitting in grief, reverence, waiting, or when words would only deepen pain. Job’s friends first sat silently with him in his suffering, though they later failed by speaking without wisdom. Speech is required when truth must be declared, injustice confronted, comfort offered, or God’s word faithfully proclaimed. Wisdom discerns the proper response in each season.

Act 18:9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:…
Jas 1:19 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…
Pro 17:27-28 A man of knowledge restrains his words, and a man…

a time to love

Love belongs in God’s ordering of life: within families, friendships, marriage, and covenant faithfulness. It reflects God’s care for His people and finds its fullest expression in Christ’s sacrificial love.

Sng 2:7 O daughters of Jerusalem, I adjure you…
Sng 3:5 O daughters of Jerusalem, I adjure you…
Sng 8:4 O daughters of Jerusalem, I adjure you:…

and a time to hate,

Hatred is fitting when directed against evil, injustice, idolatry, and sin. It does not justify personal malice or vengeance, but recognizes that what opposes God’s righteousness must not be embraced.

Psa 97:10 Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He delivers them…
Amo 5:15 Hate evil and love good; establish justice…
Pro 8:13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride…

a time for war

Human history includes seasons of conflict. Israel’s wars in the Old Testament were at times instruments of God’s judgment and the defense of His covenant people. War remains a grievous reality in a fallen world.

2Sa 11:1 In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,…
Luk 14:31-32 Or what king on his way to war with another king…
Deu 20:1-4 When you go out to war against your enemies…

and a time for peace.

Peace is more than the end of fighting; it includes restored order, safety, and reconciliation. God’s purpose moves toward lasting peace, ultimately secured through Christ.

Isa 2:4 Then He will judge between the nations and arbitrate…
Psa 46:9 He makes wars to cease throughout the earth;…
Psa 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

God’s Works Remain Forever

What does the worker gain from his toil?

The Preacher considers whether labor produces any lasting advantage when life’s seasons and outcomes remain under God’s control. Work is necessary and can bring provision and satisfaction, yet human effort cannot secure permanence or mastery over life.

Ecc 1:3 What does a man gain from all his labor,…
Ecc 2:22 For what does a man get for all the toil and striving…
Pro 14:23 There is profit in all labor, but mere talk…

I have seen the burden

Solomon speaks from observation and experience of life under God’s rule. Human labor, responsibility, and the search for lasting meaning mark life in a fallen world.

Job 5:7 Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.
Psa 90:10 The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty…
Rom 8:20-22 For the creation was subjected to futility,…

that God has laid

God remains sovereign over the conditions of human life, including its difficulties and limitations.

Gen 3:17-19 And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened…
Job 34:23 For God need not examine a man further…
Isa 45:7 I form the light and create the darkness;…

upon the sons of men

Every person shares this condition, regardless of position, wealth, or wisdom.

Psa 8:4 what is man that You are mindful of him?…
Psa 144:3 O LORD, what is man, that You regard him…
Job 25:6 how much less man, who is but a maggot, and the son of man,…

to occupy them.

Earthly concerns keep humanity engaged or occupied with work, hardship, and the limits of life, exposing the need for wisdom and dependence on God.

Psa 104:23 Man goes forth to his work and to his labor until evening.
Exo 20:9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
Pro 14:23 There is profit in all labor, but mere talk…

He has made everything beautiful in its time.

God’s work unfolds according to His appointed order. What He creates and permits has a proper place within His purposes, though its goodness may not be fully visible in the moment. “Beautiful” can also mean appropriate or fitting, reflecting the wisdom and order of His timing. Creation itself was declared very good, reflecting the wisdom and order of its Maker.

Gen 1:31 And God looked upon all that He had made…
Psa 104:24 How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom…
Gal 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son,…

He has also set eternity in the hearts of men,

Humanity bears an awareness that life extends beyond present circumstances and earthly limits. Men and women seek lasting meaning because they were made by God and for Him. This longing points beyond the passing world to God’s eternal purposes.

Heb 11:13-16 All these people died in faith, without having received…
2Co 5:1-5 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in…
2Co 4:16-18 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is…

yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.

Though people recognize eternity, they cannot comprehend the whole course of God’s plan. Human knowledge is limited to a small part of what God is accomplishing through history. The unknowns of life therefore call for humility before the God whose purposes encompass the beginning and the end.

Job 11:7-9 Can you fathom the deep things of God…
Rom 11:33-34 O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge…
Act 15:18 that have been known for ages.’

I know that there is nothing better for them

After observing the seasons and events God appoints, the Teacher concludes that people cannot master His work or secure lasting gain through their own efforts. Their proper response is to receive life as God’s gift within the limits He has set.

Ecc 2:24 Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink…
Ecc 8:15 So I commended the enjoyment of life, because…
Ecc 5:18 Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting:…

than to rejoice

Joy is not denial of life’s hardships or injustices. It is grateful enjoyment of the good God provides, even when His purposes remain beyond human understanding.

Php 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
1Th 5:16 Rejoice at all times.
Psa 118:24 This is the day that the LORD has made; we will rejoice…

and do good

God calls people to live rightly during the days given to them, acting with integrity, justice, and kindness rather than pursuing selfish gain or empty pleasure.

Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good…
1Pe 3:11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace…
Tit 3:14 And our people must also learn to devote themselves…

while they live,

Human life is brief and subject to God’s sovereign ordering. The Teacher urges faithful, grateful living in the present, since no one controls the future or can add to the time God has allotted.

Psa 63:4 So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name…
Psa 104:33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise…
Psa 146:2 I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing…

and also that every man should eat and drink

Eating and drinking represent the ordinary blessings by which God sustains human life. In Israel’s world, shared meals also expressed peace, fellowship, and gratitude for God’s provision.

Ecc 5:18 Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting:…
Psa 104:14-15 He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops…
Act 14:17 Yet He has not left Himself without testimony…

and find satisfaction in all his labor—

Work was given by God from the beginning and retains dignity despite the burdens brought by sin. Though labor cannot secure lasting gain apart from God, a person may rightly receive joy in the daily tasks entrusted to him.

Ecc 2:24 Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink…
Psa 128:2 For when you eat the fruit of your labor,…
Isa 65:22 No longer will they build houses for others to inhabit,…

this is the gift of God.

Contentment in life’s ordinary provisions and labor does not arise merely from prosperity or human effort. God gives both the means of life and the ability to enjoy them.

Ecc 5:19 Furthermore, God has given riches and wealth…
Jas 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above…
1Ti 6:17 Instruct those who are rich in the present age…

I know that everything God does endures forever;

God’s works stand beyond the limits of time and human change. Ecclesiastes repeatedly observes that human labor, achievements, and generations pass away, but God’s purposes remain fixed. His creation, providence, judgment, and redemption unfold according to His sovereign will and will reach their appointed end.

Psa 111:3 Splendid and majestic is His work; His righteousness…
Psa 33:11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever, …
Isa 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times…

nothing can be added to it or taken from it.

What God accomplishes is complete and cannot be improved, corrected, or overturned by human effort. People may build, plan, and act within the world God has made, yet they cannot alter His decrees or frustrate His purposes. His works reveal the perfection of His wisdom and power.

Deu 12:32 See that you do everything I command you;…
Deu 4:2 You must not add to or subtract from what I command you…
Pro 30:6 Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you…

God does it so that they should fear Him.

The certainty and greatness of God’s works are meant to produce reverence before Him. Such fear recognizes His authority as Creator and Judge and leads people to humility, obedience, and worship rather than confidence in their own accomplishments.

Exo 20:20 “Do not be afraid,” Moses replied. “For God has come to test…
Jer 32:39-40 I will give them one heart and one way.…
Psa 130:4 But with You there is forgiveness, so that…

What exists has already been,

Life unfolds in recurring patterns under God’s rule. Human rebellion, judgment, repentance, and restoration had already marked Israel’s history and would continue to do so. The same fallen tendencies appear across generations, showing that mankind does not escape the effects of sin.

Ecc 1:10 Is there a case where one can say, “Look, this is new”?…
Ecc 6:10 Whatever exists was named long ago, and it is known…
Rev 4:11 Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor…

and what will be has already been,

God is not surprised by the future. He knows the course of history and governs it according to His purposes. Earlier events often foreshadow later ones, including God’s provision of redemption through sacrifice and His promises of a coming Deliverer.

Isa 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times…
Psa 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written…
Isa 42:9 Behold, the former things have happened, and now…

for God will call to account what has passed.

Nothing is lost from God’s sight. He will judge deeds done in the past and bring justice where wrongdoing has gone unanswered. His final accounting confirms that history is morally governed and that every person remains responsible before Him.

Rom 14:12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;…
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…

From Dust to Dust

Furthermore, I saw under the sun

The Preacher continues his sober examination of life in a fallen world, observing conditions as they appear in human society.

Ecc 9:11 The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong;…
Ecc 1:14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun…
Ecc 2:11 Yet when I considered the works my hands had accomplished…

that in the place of judgment there is wickedness,

Courts, the place of judgment where justice was expected to be administered, and rulers appointed to defend the innocent and punish evil were often corrupted by bribery, favoritism, and self-interest.

Ecc 5:8 If you see the oppression of the poor…
Deu 16:19 Do not deny justice or show partiality…
Pro 17:15 Acquitting the guilty and condemning the righteous…

and in the place of righteousness there is wickedness.

Even places set apart for godly conduct and lawful order could be marked by hypocrisy and sin. Human institutions cannot produce perfect justice, leaving mankind accountable to God, the final Judge.

Isa 1:21-23 See how the faithful city has become a harlot!…
Jer 7:11 Has this house, which bears My Name, become a den…
Ezk 22:26 Her priests do violence to My law and profane My holy things…

I said in my heart,

Solomon reaches a settled conclusion while considering the injustice and uncertainty found in human life. Earthly judgments may fail, but no person escapes God’s authority.

Ecc 2:1 I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure;…
1Sa 27:1 David, however, said to himself, “One of these days…
1Ki 12:26 Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom…

“God will judge the righteous and the wicked,

God will render a final and righteous judgment upon every person. The righteous are not beyond accountability, and the wicked will not avoid the consequences of their deeds.

Psa 1:5-6 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,…
Rom 2:6-11 God “will repay each one according to his deeds.”…
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…

since there is a time for every activity and every deed.”

God has appointed the proper time to bring all human actions into judgment. What appears unresolved in the present will be addressed according to His perfect justice.

Ecc 8:6 For there is a right time and procedure to every purpose…
Dan 2:21 He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings…
Pro 16:9 A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines…

I said to myself,

The Teacher considers humanity’s condition before God.

Ecc 2:1 I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure;…
Luk 12:17 So he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do?’…
Ecc 1:16 I said to myself, “Behold, I have grown…

“As for the sons of men,

All people, regardless of status or achievement, share the same frailty.

Psa 144:3 O LORD, what is man, that You regard him…
Psa 8:4 what is man that You are mindful of him?…
Job 25:6 how much less man, who is but a maggot, and the son of man,…

God tests them

He allows their true condition to be revealed.

Exo 16:4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain down bread…
Deu 13:3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer.…
Deu 8:2 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you…

so that they may see for themselves

Human pride is stripped away when people recognize their dependence on God.

Ecc 8:17 Despite his efforts to search it out, he cannot find…
Deu 8:3 He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna…
Psa 119:71 It was good for me to be afflicted, that I might learn…

that they are but beasts.”

Though made in God’s image and accountable to Him, humans share with animals the mortality of the body. The comparison humbles mankind and exposes the emptiness of self-reliance.

Psa 49:20 A man who has riches without understanding…
Psa 73:22 I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast…
2Pe 2:12 These men are like irrational animals, creatures of instinct…

For the fates of both men and beasts are the same:

Under the curse of sin, both humans and animals are subject to the same fate—death; “fates” may also mean “events” or “occurrences.” Though mankind bears God’s image and has a distinct calling before Him, earthly life ends alike for all creatures.

Gen 7:21-22 And every living thing that moved upon the earth…
Job 12:10 The life of every living thing is in His hand…
Psa 104:29 When You hide Your face, they are terrified;…

As one dies, so dies the other—

Death levels human status, achievement, wealth, and power. The Preacher confronts the assumption that man’s visible accomplishments secure lasting advantage in this present world.

Psa 49:10 For it is clear that wise men die, and the foolish…
Psa 49:14 Like sheep they are destined for Sheol.…
Heb 9:27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that…

they all have the same breath.

Both receive life from God and depend upon Him for every breath (ruach, also meaning “spirit” or “wind”). Their shared mortality shows that created life is fragile and cannot sustain itself apart from its Creator.

Job 34:14-15 If He were to set His heart to it and withdraw His Spirit…
Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath…
Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground…

Man has no advantage over the animals,

In regard to physical death, man possesses no natural escape from the fate of the beasts. Human dignity is real, but it does not remove the sentence of death brought into the world by sin.

Psa 49:12 But a man, despite his wealth, cannot endure;…
Psa 49:20 A man who has riches without understanding…

since everything is futile.

Life under the sun is fleeting and cannot provide ultimate security or meaning by itself. The reality of death directs attention beyond earthly gain to God, who alone gives lasting purpose and judges every life.

Rom 8:20 For the creation was subjected to futility,…
Ecc 1:2 “Futility of futilities,” says the Teacher,…
Ecc 1:14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun…

All go to one place;

Humans and animals alike die, showing that death reaches every living creature. The immediate view is the grave, where earthly distinctions no longer alter the shared reality of mortality.

Job 30:23 Yes, I know that You will bring me down to death,…
Psa 49:11 Their graves are their eternal homes—their dwellings…
Ecc 9:2-3 It is the same for all: There is a common fate…

all come from dust,

God formed man from the ground, and human life remains bound to the physical world God created. Animals also belong to that created order and share its frailty.

Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground…
Psa 103:14 For He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are dust.
Job 4:19 how much more those who dwell in houses of clay,…

and all return to dust.

Death brings the body back to the earth from which it came. Ecclesiastes confronts the certainty of physical death while leaving room for God’s final judgment and the future hope He has revealed.

Gen 3:19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread,…
Psa 90:3 You return man to dust, saying, “Return, O sons of mortals.”
Psa 104:29 When You hide Your face, they are terrified;…

Who knows

Human observation cannot fully penetrate the boundary between life and death. Ecclesiastes recognizes the limits of earthly wisdom and calls attention to realities known perfectly only to God.

Ecc 6:12 For who knows what is good for a man during the few days…
Ecc 8:7 Since no one knows what will happen, who can tell him…
Job 14:14 When a man dies, will he live again? All the days…

if the spirit of man rises upward

Humanity bears a God-given spirit and is accountable to Him beyond bodily death. The upward direction points to man's destiny before his Creator.

Ecc 12:7 before the dust returns to the ground from which it came.…
Luk 23:46 Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father,…
2Co 5:8 We are confident, then, and would prefer to be…

and the spirit of the animal descends into the earth?

Animals share mortal life and return physically to the ground, but they do not bear God's image or stand before Him as moral beings. The contrast preserves the distinction between human life and animal life despite their common death.

Psa 104:29 When You hide Your face, they are terrified;…
Gen 7:22 Of all that was on dry land, everything that had…
Job 34:14-15 If He were to set His heart to it and withdraw His Spirit…

I have seen that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work,

The Preacher concludes that ordinary labor, received with gratitude, is one of God’s good gifts. Work was established from the beginning as a meaningful part of human life, providing for households and strengthening the life of the community. Though toil is burdened by the effects of sin, a person may still find genuine satisfaction in faithful labor.

Ecc 2:24 Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink…
Ecc 5:18 Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting:…
Psa 128:2 For when you eat the fruit of your labor,…

because that is his lot.

Each person lives within the responsibilities and opportunities God has assigned. Rather than striving to control what has not been given, people are to receive their portion with contentment and carry out their duties before God.

Ecc 5:19 Furthermore, God has given riches and wealth…
Psa 16:5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup;…
1Co 7:17 Regardless, each one should lead the life…

For who can bring him to see what will come after him?

No one can return to reveal the events that follow his life or secure the outcome of all he has done. The future remains under God’s authority, so the wise response is to live faithfully in the present.

Ecc 6:12 For who knows what is good for a man during the few days…
Ecc 8:7 Since no one knows what will happen, who can tell him…
Jas 4:14 You do not even know what will happen tomorrow!…
