Luke 6

The Lord of the Sabbath
(1 Samuel 21:1–7; Matthew 12:1–8; Mark 2:23–28)

1 Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) ἐν (on) σαββάτῳ (a Sabbath) διαπορεύεσθαι (is passing) αὐτὸν (that He) διὰ (through) σπορίμων (grainfields), καὶ (and) ἔτιλλον (were plucking) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) ἤσθιον (were eating) τοὺς (the) στάχυας (heads of grain) ψώχοντες (rubbing them) ταῖς (in the) χερσίν (hands). 2 τινὲς (Some) δὲ (however) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) εἶπαν (said)· Τί (Why) ποιεῖτε (do you⁺ do) (what) οὐκ (not) ἔξεστιν (is lawful) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths)?

3 Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) εἶπεν (said) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Οὐδὲ (Not even) τοῦτο (this) ἀνέγνωτε (did you⁺ read) (what) ἐποίησεν (did) Δαυὶδ (David) ὁπότε (when) ἐπείνασεν (he was hungry) αὐτὸς (he) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) ὄντες (being)? 4 ὡς (how) εἰσῆλθεν (he entered) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἄρτους (loaves) τῆς (of the) προθέσεως (presentation) λαβὼν (having taken) ἔφαγεν (he ate) καὶ (and) ἔδωκεν (gave) τοῖς (to those) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him), οὓς (which) οὐκ (not) ἔξεστιν (is lawful) φαγεῖν (to eat) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) μόνους (only) τοὺς (for the) ἱερεῖς (priests)?

5 καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Κύριός (Lord) ἐστιν (is) τοῦ (of the) σαββάτου (Sabbath) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

6 Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) ἐν (on) ἑτέρῳ (another) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) εἰσελθεῖν (entered) αὐτὸν (that He) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) συναγωγὴν (synagogue) καὶ (and) διδάσκειν (taught)· καὶ (and) ἦν (there was) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἐκεῖ (there) καὶ (and) (the) χεὶρ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of him) (the) δεξιὰ (right) ἦν (was) ξηρά (withered)· 7 παρετηροῦντο (Were closely watching) δὲ (now) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) εἰ (whether) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) θεραπεύει (He heals), ἵνα (so that) εὕρωσιν (they might find reason) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him).

8 Αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (now) ᾔδει (had known) τοὺς (the) διαλογισμοὺς (reasonings) αὐτῶν (of them), εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (now) τῷ (to the) ἀνδρὶ (man) τῷ (the) ξηρὰν (withered) ἔχοντι (having) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand)· Ἔγειρε (Arise) καὶ (and) στῆθι (stand) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) μέσον (midst)· καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having risen up) ἔστη (he stood).

9 εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them)· Ἐπερωτῶ (I ask) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) εἰ (if) ἔξεστιν (is it lawful) τῷ (on the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) ἀγαθοποιῆσαι (to do good) (or) κακοποιῆσαι (to do evil), ψυχὴν (life) σῶσαι (to save) (or) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy)? 10 Καὶ (And) περιβλεψάμενος (having looked around at) πάντας (all) αὐτοὺς (them) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἔκτεινον (Stretch out) τὴν (the) χεῖρά (hand) σου (of you). (-) δὲ (And) ἐποίησεν (he did), καὶ (and) ἀπεκατεστάθη (was restored) (the) χεὶρ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of him).

11 αὐτοὶ (They) δὲ (then) ἐπλήσθησαν (were filled) ἀνοίας (with madness), καὶ (and) διελάλουν (they were discussing) πρὸς (with) ἀλλήλους (one another) τί (what) ἂν (-) ποιήσαιεν (they might do) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus).

Woes to the Satisfied

24 Πλὴν (But) οὐαὶ (woe) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) τοῖς (who are) πλουσίοις (rich),

Ὅτι (because) ἀπέχετε (you⁺ have in full) τὴν (the) παράκλησιν (comfort) ὑμῶν (of you⁺).

Κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) αὐτὰ (same) γὰρ (for) ἐποίουν (were doing) τοῖς (to the) ψευδοπροφήταις (false prophets) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) αὐτῶν (of them).

Judging Others

A Tree and Its Fruit
(Matthew 7:15–23; Matthew 12:33–37)

43 Οὐ (No) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (there is) δένδρον (tree) καλὸν (good) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) σαπρόν (rotten), οὐδὲ (nor) πάλιν (again) δένδρον (a tree) σαπρὸν (rotten) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλόν (good). 44 ἕκαστον (Each) γὰρ (for) δένδρον (tree) ἐκ (by) τοῦ (-) ἰδίου (its own) καρποῦ (fruit) γινώσκεται (is known)· οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐξ (from) ἀκανθῶν (thorns) συλλέγουσιν (they gather) σῦκα (figs), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐκ (from) βάτου (a bramble bush) σταφυλὴν (grapes) τρυγῶσιν (do they pick). 45  (The) ἀγαθὸς (good) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ἀγαθοῦ (good) θησαυροῦ (treasure) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him) προφέρει (brings forth) τὸ (what is) ἀγαθόν (good), καὶ (and) (the) πονηρὸς (evil) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) πονηροῦ (evil) προφέρει (brings forth) τὸ (what is) πονηρόν (evil)· ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) περισσεύματος (the abundance) καρδίας (of the heart) λαλεῖ (speaks) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of him).
