Berean Study Bible New Stone TabletsAfter Israel’s sin with the golden calf and Moses’ intercession, the LORD directed him to prepare for the covenant tablets to be restored. Though the first tablets had been broken in response to Israel’s rebellion, God did not abandon His people or revoke His purpose for them. Exo 34:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets… “Chisel out two stone tablets like the originals, Moses was to prepare tablets corresponding to those God had originally given. The replacement tablets would bear the same covenant commands, showing that God’s law remained unchanged despite Israel’s failure. Exo 34:4 So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals.… come up to Me on the mountain, Moses again ascended the mountain to meet with the LORD and receive His instruction. As Israel’s appointed leader, he stood before God on behalf of the nation. Exo 24:12 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain… and make an ark of wood. The ark was to safeguard the tablets as the enduring record of God’s covenant with Israel. It would later be kept in the sanctuary as a sign that the LORD dwelt among His people and ruled them by His word. Exo 25:10 And they are to construct an ark of acacia wood,… And I will write on the tablets God Himself would restore the covenant tablets, confirming His authority over the Law and His willingness to renew Israel after their rebellion. Deu 4:13 He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded… the words that were on the first tablets, The second tablets would bear the same Ten Commandments given at Sinai. Israel’s sin had not altered God’s standards or annulled His covenant purposes. Exo 34:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets… which you broke; Moses had shattered the first tablets when he found the people worshiping the golden calf, visibly portraying their violation of the covenant through idolatry. Exo 32:19 As Moses approached the camp and saw the calf… and you are to place them in the ark.” The tablets were to be kept in the Ark of the Covenant as the enduring testimony of God’s covenant with Israel. Their place at the center of Israel’s worship showed that the nation’s life was to be ordered by God’s commands and governed by His presence. Exo 25:16 And place inside the ark the Testimony, which I will give… So I made an ark of acacia wood, Moses prepared the sacred chest that would receive the covenant tablets. Acacia wood, common in the wilderness and resistant to decay, provided a durable material for the ark. Its construction followed God’s command and prepared a protected place for the written terms of His covenant with Israel. Exo 25:10 And they are to construct an ark of acacia wood,… chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals, After Moses broke the first tablets in response to Israel’s idolatry with the golden calf, God commanded new tablets to be prepared. Their replacement showed that Israel’s sin had not canceled God’s covenant or His moral law. Exo 34:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets… and went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. Moses returned to Mount Sinai as Israel’s appointed mediator, carrying the tablets for God to inscribe again. The ascent marked the renewal of the covenant and the restoration of the commandments that were to guide Israel’s life before the Lord. Exo 34:4 So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals.… And the LORD wrote on the tablets God Himself inscribed the covenant law, establishing its divine authority and enduring character. Exo 32:16 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing… what had been written previously, The second tablets restored the words recorded on the tablets Moses had broken after Israel’s idolatry with the golden calf. Exo 34:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets… the Ten Commandments These commands set forth Israel’s basic obligations toward God and toward one another under the covenant. Exo 34:28 So Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights… that He had spoken to you on the mountain Israel had heard God’s voice at Sinai when He revealed His law before the entire nation. Exo 19:20 The LORD descended to the top of Mount Sinai… out of the fire The fire displayed God’s holy presence and the seriousness of the covenant being established. Deu 4:12 And the LORD spoke to you out of the fire.… on the day of the assembly. All Israel was gathered before the mountain as witnesses to God’s covenant words. Deu 4:10 The day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb,… The LORD gave them to me, Moses received the tablets as God’s appointed mediator and carried them to the people. Deu 5:22 The LORD spoke these commandments in a loud voice… and I went back down the mountain Moses descended Sinai after receiving the replacement tablets following Israel’s sin with the golden calf. His return marked the renewal of the covenant and his continued service as God’s mediator to the nation. Exo 32:15-16 Then Moses turned and went down the mountain… and placed the tablets in the ark I had made, The tablets of the Ten Commandments were placed within the ark as the written testimony of God’s covenant with Israel. The ark became the sacred repository of the law and a visible reminder that the Lord dwelt among His people. Exo 25:16 And place inside the ark the Testimony, which I will give… as the LORD had commanded me; Moses carried out God’s instructions without alteration, demonstrating the obedience required of Israel under the covenant. Exo 34:4 So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals.… and there they have remained. The tablets remained in the ark as an enduring witness to God’s covenant, His authority, and Israel’s obligation to live in holiness and obedience. 1Ki 8:9 There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets… The Israelites traveled from Beeroth Bene-jaakan to Moserah, Israel’s wilderness journey continued from camp to camp under the Lord’s direction, including Beeroth Bene-jaakan, meaning “wells of the sons of Jaakan.” These movements preserved the record of a generation living under God’s discipline while He prepared their children to enter the land He had promised. Num 33:30-31 They set out from Hashmonah and camped at Moseroth.… where Aaron died and was buried, Aaron’s death ended his service as Israel’s first high priest. Though he had faithfully served alongside Moses, he did not enter the Promised Land because of his disobedience at Meribah. His burial marked the passing of a leading figure from the generation that left Egypt. Num 20:27-29 So Moses did as the LORD had commanded… and Eleazar his son succeeded him as priest. Eleazar assumed the high-priestly office according to God’s appointed order. The priesthood continued without interruption, providing spiritual leadership for Israel as the nation approached the land of Canaan. Exo 29:29-30 The holy garments that belong to Aaron will belong… From there they traveled to Gudgodah, Israel continued its wilderness journey under the Lord’s direction, moving from camp to camp, including Gudgodah, meaning “cutting” or “quarry,” as He led the nation toward the land He had promised. These travels reminded the people that they remained dependent on God for guidance, protection, and daily provision. Num 33:32 They set out from Bene-jaakan and camped at Hor-haggidgad. and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, The journey from Gudgodah brought Israel to Jotbathah, meaning “pleasantness,” a place with streams of water, during the years of wandering. Each encampment marked God’s continued faithfulness to preserve the nation despite its repeated failures in the wilderness. Num 33:33 They set out from Hor-haggidgad and camped at Jotbathah. a land with streams of water. Jotbathah provided water in an otherwise dry region, supplying a necessary resource for the people and their livestock. Its streams were a tangible sign of God’s care for Israel as He sustained them on the way to Canaan. Deu 8:7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,… At that time After Israel’s sin with the golden calf and Moses’ intercession, the LORD renewed order among His people and confirmed the Levites’ distinct place in Israel’s worship. Exo 32:26-29 So Moses stood at the entrance to the camp… the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi God chose Levi from among the tribes for sacred service. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no tribal territory because their inheritance was bound to the LORD’s work. Num 3:11-13 Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,… to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, The ark represented the LORD’s covenant presence among Israel and was to be handled only according to His command. Its transport by the Levites reflected the holiness required in approaching God. Num 4:15 When Aaron and his sons have finished covering… to stand before the LORD to serve Him, The Levites ministered at the tabernacle, assisting in its care and in the worship of Israel. Their service showed that access to God required appointed representatives. 2Ch 29:11 Now, my sons, do not be negligent, for the LORD… and to pronounce blessings in His name, They declared the LORD’s blessing upon the people, reminding Israel that peace, protection, and favor came from God alone. 1Ch 23:13 The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses.Aaron and his descendants… as they do to this day. The Levitical calling continued throughout Israel’s history, preserving the worship and service God had established for His people. 1Ch 16:37-42 So David left Asaph and his associates there… That is why Levi has no portion or inheritance among his brothers; Levi was assigned to the service of the tabernacle rather than granted a tribal territory in Canaan. The Levites were dispersed among the other tribes in designated cities so they could carry out priestly and teaching responsibilities throughout Israel. Their material support came through the tithes and offerings brought by the people. Jos 13:33 To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance.… the LORD is his inheritance, Levi’s distinctive inheritance was the privilege of belonging to the LORD and serving before Him. While the other tribes received land, the Levites depended upon God’s provision through the worship and obedience of the nation. Jos 18:7 The Levites, however, have no portion among you,… as the LORD your God promised him. God had established this arrangement for Levi before Israel entered the land. Their lack of territorial inheritance was not a loss but the fulfillment of God’s appointed role for the tribe. Deu 18:1-2 The Levitical priests shall have no portion… I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, Moses again remained before the Lord for the full period in which he received renewed instruction for Israel. Mount Sinai was the setting of God’s revelation, covenant renewal, and provision of the Law after Israel’s sin with the golden calf. Deu 9:9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets… like the first time, His second stay recalled the first ascent, when he received the tablets of the covenant. Israel’s rebellion had broken the covenant relationship, yet God provided a way for it to be restored. Exo 34:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets… and that time the LORD again listened to me Moses interceded for the nation, asking God to spare the people and continue His purpose for them. The Lord received his appeal according to His mercy and covenant faithfulness. Deu 9:19 For I was afraid of the anger and wrath.… and agreed not to destroy you. Israel deserved judgment for its idolatry, but God preserved the nation. Their survival rested on God’s mercy and His commitment to fulfill His promises through the people He had chosen. Exo 32:14 So the LORD relented from the calamity He had threatened… Then the LORD said to me, God directed Moses as Israel’s appointed leader and mediator of the covenant. His command came as the nation prepared to leave Horeb and move toward Canaan. Deu 2:2 At this time the LORD said to me, “Get up. Israel’s time at the mountain had ended. The people were to resume their journey after the covenant had been renewed despite their sin with the golden calf. Jos 1:2 Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise… Continue your journey Moses was to lead Israel forward through the wilderness toward the land God had appointed for them. Exo 14:15 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me?… ahead of the people, Though Moses would not enter Canaan himself, he remained responsible to guide the nation in obedience to God’s command. Jos 3:6 And he said to the priests, “Take the ark of the covenant… that they may enter and possess the land Canaan was Israel’s promised inheritance, to be received under God’s direction and secured through their obedience and conquest. Deu 1:8 See, I have placed the land before you. Enter and possess… that I swore to their fathers God’s promise rested on the covenant He made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Israel’s possession of the land would demonstrate His faithfulness to that oath. Gen 26:3 Stay in this land as a foreigner, and I will be with you… to give them.” The land was God’s gift to Israel, granted according to His promise rather than their merit. Gen 12:7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said,…
A Call to ObedienceMoses addressed the covenant people as they prepared to enter the land promised to their fathers. After recounting Israel’s failures and God’s mercy, he called the nation to renewed faithfulness. Deu 4:1 Hear now, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances… what does the LORD your God ask of you God’s commands were not arbitrary; they defined the covenant life required of a people redeemed and set apart for Him. Mic 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good.… but to fear the LORD your God Israel was to regard the LORD with reverent obedience, recognizing His holiness, authority, and faithfulness. Deu 6:13 Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths… by walking in all His ways, Their daily conduct was to conform to God’s revealed will rather than the practices of the nations around them. Deu 5:33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God… to love Him, Covenant obedience was to arise from wholehearted devotion to the God who had chosen, delivered, and sustained them. Deu 6:5 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart… to serve the LORD your God Service included worship and obedient allegiance, rejecting all rival gods and loyalties. Jos 24:14 Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him… with all your heart and with all your soul, God required the complete devotion of Israel’s inner life, will, and actions. Mat 22:37 Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God… and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD God’s commands governed Israel’s worship, justice, family life, and conduct within the covenant established at Sinai. They set the nation apart from the surrounding peoples and directed its life under the Lord’s rule. Moses calls the generation preparing to enter Canaan to receive these commands as the covenant obligations of God’s redeemed people. Deu 6:1 These are the commandments and statutes and ordinances… that I am giving you this day Moses renews the covenant instructions on the plains of Moab before Israel enters the Promised Land. Though many had died during the wilderness years, God’s word remained binding upon their children. The command required a present response as Israel moved into a new stage of its history. Deu 4:40 Keep His statutes and commandments, which I am giving you… for your own good? The Lord’s laws were given for Israel’s welfare, preserving the nation from idolatry, injustice, and the destructive practices of Canaan. Obedience brought life, stability, and blessing in the land, while rebellion brought covenant judgment. God’s requirements expressed His righteous care for the people He had delivered. Deu 6:24 And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes… Behold, Moses calls Israel to consider carefully the greatness of the God who has bound Himself to them. 1Ki 8:27 But will God indeed dwell upon the earth?… to the LORD your God Israel’s covenant God is not a local deity or tribal power, but the LORD who chose their fathers and delivered them from Egypt. Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out… belong the heavens, All that is above the earth lies under His rule and ownership, including the ordered realms of creation beyond human reach. Psa 115:16 The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth… even the highest heavens, The greatest heights of heaven, where God’s glory is revealed, cannot contain Him or limit His authority. Neh 9:6 You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens,… and the earth The land Israel was about to enter, along with every nation and kingdom, remained the LORD’s possession. Psa 24:1 A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD’s… and everything in it. Every creature, resource, and human life belongs to Him, establishing His rightful authority over Israel and all people. Psa 50:10-12 for every beast of the forest is Mine—the cattle… Yet the LORD has set His affection on your fathers and loved them. God’s love for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob rested on His covenant promise and gracious purpose, not on their merit. He bound Himself to their family and pledged to make from them a people through whom His purposes for the world would unfold. Deu 4:37 Because He loved your fathers, He chose their descendants… And He has chosen you, their descendants after them, Israel stood before God as the heirs of the covenant made with the patriarchs. Their national calling came from God’s decision, not from their strength, number, or righteousness. They were set apart to belong to Him and to represent His rule among the nations. Deu 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.… above all the peoples, Israel held a unique place among the nations because the Lord had entrusted them with His law, worship, and promises. Their election carried responsibility as well as privilege, preparing the way for the Messiah to come through their people. Deu 26:18-19 And today the LORD has proclaimed that you are His people… even to this day. God’s choice of Israel remained grounded in His faithful commitment to the covenant. Their history, including both obedience and rebellion, did not overturn His purposes or nullify His promises. Rom 11:28-29 Regarding the gospel, they are enemies on your account;… Circumcise your hearts, Israel’s physical circumcision marked membership in the covenant established with Abraham, but God required more than an outward sign. He demanded inward loyalty, repentance, and a willing obedience that reflected faith in Him. Deu 30:6 The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts… therefore, In view of the Lord’s mercy, His faithfulness to the covenant, and His continued care for Israel despite their rebellion, the people were called to respond with wholehearted submission. Deu 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today… and stiffen your necks no more. Their past resistance to God had repeatedly brought judgment and discipline. Like an animal refusing its master’s direction, Israel was to abandon stubborn rebellion and humbly follow the Lord’s commands. Exo 32:9 The LORD also said to Moses, “I have seen this people,… For the LORD your God is God of gods Yahweh alone stands above every being worshiped as a god among the nations. Israel lived among peoples devoted to many deities, yet the Lord was not one god competing for rank; He was the true and living God, sovereign over all creation. Dan 2:47 The king said to Daniel, “Your God is truly the God of gods…… and Lord of lords, Every king, ruler, and authority remains subject to Him. Earthly power is temporary and accountable to the One who reigns over nations and judges their rulers. 1Ti 6:15 which the blessed and only Sovereign One—the King of kings…… the great, mighty, and awesome God, His greatness is seen in His power to create, deliver, judge, and sustain His people. Israel had witnessed His might in the exodus, the wilderness, and His covenant faithfulness. His majesty rightly inspires reverent fear. Neh 9:32 So now, our God, the great and mighty and awesome God… showing no partiality God does not judge according to status, wealth, ancestry, or influence. Though He chose Israel for His covenant purposes, He holds every person and nation to His righteous standard. Act 10:34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now truly understand… and accepting no bribe. No gift, sacrifice, or human advantage can corrupt His judgment. His decisions are perfectly just, and He cannot be persuaded to overlook evil or deny what is right. 2Ch 19:7 And now, may the fear of the LORD be upon you.… He executes justice for the fatherless and widow, God defends those most exposed to poverty, loss, and abuse in Israelite society. Orphans and widows often lacked a household protector and could be easily neglected or exploited. Their treatment revealed whether Israel honored the justice required by the covenant. Isa 1:17 Learn to do right; seek justice and correct the oppressor.… and He loves the foreigner, God’s concern extends beyond Israel to the resident alien living among His people. Though foreigners possessed limited social security and could be treated as outsiders, God commanded Israel to remember its own former vulnerability in Egypt and to deal with them justly. Lev 19:34 You must treat the foreigner living among you as native-born… giving him food and clothing. God’s love is shown in practical provision for basic needs. Israel was to reflect His justice by ensuring that the needy, including widows, orphans, and foreigners, were not left without food or covering. Gen 28:20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me… So you also must love the foreigner, Israel was to extend care and justice to non-Israelites living among them. God’s own concern for the vulnerable governed their treatment, requiring them to show practical kindness rather than exploitation or neglect. Lev 19:34 You must treat the foreigner living among you as native-born… since you yourselves were foreigners in the land of Egypt. Their years in Egypt gave Israel firsthand knowledge of life as outsiders under oppression. Remembering God’s deliverance was to shape their conduct toward others, leading them to give the mercy and fairness they had received. Exo 22:21 You must not exploit or oppress a foreign resident,… You are to fear the LORD your God Israel was to live in reverent submission to the holy and sovereign God who had redeemed them from Egypt and bound them to Himself by covenant. Such fear recognized His authority, justice, and right to command obedience. Deu 6:24 And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes… and serve Him. The Hebrew word for “serve” can also mean “worship.” Their service included worship, sacrifices, and faithful obedience to the law. Israel was not to divide its devotion among the gods of Canaan but to worship the LORD alone. Jos 24:14 Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him… Hold fast to Him Covenant faithfulness required Israel to remain loyal to the LORD, holding fast to Him in steadfast devotion, rejecting idolatry and every competing allegiance. They were to depend on Him and remain committed to His commands in the land they were about to possess. Deu 13:4 You are to follow the LORD your God and fear Him.… and take your oaths in His name. Oaths called upon God as witness and judge, requiring truthfulness and integrity. Swearing in the LORD’s name affirmed that Israel belonged to Him alone and would not invoke false gods. Deu 6:13 Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths… He is your praise Israel’s worship belonged to Yahweh alone, the God who had redeemed and sustained them. Their identity and gratitude were to be centered on Him rather than on the gods of the surrounding nations. Jer 17:14 Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me,… and He is your God, Yahweh had bound Himself to Israel in covenant, claiming them as His people and dwelling among them through His appointed means of worship. Deu 4:35 You were shown these things so that you would know… who has done for you these great and awesome wonders Moses recalls the Lord’s mighty acts in Egypt, the deliverance through the Red Sea, and His provision and protection in the wilderness. These works displayed His power, faithfulness, and authority over creation and nations. Psa 136:4 He alone does great wonders. His loving devotion… that your eyes have seen. The generation addressed had witnessed God’s intervention firsthand. Their own experience of His deeds left them responsible to remember His faithfulness and obey His covenant. Deu 29:2-3 Moses summoned all Israel and proclaimed to them,… Your fathers went down to Egypt, Jacob and his sons entered Egypt during the famine, where Joseph had been placed in authority to preserve the family of promise. What began as refuge from starvation became the setting in which Israel multiplied, though later generations would suffer oppression under a new Pharaoh. Gen 46:6-7 They also took the livestock and possessions… seventy in all, The household of Jacob numbered seventy persons when they settled in Egypt. From this small family, God formed the nation He had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Gen 46:27 And with the two sons who had been born to Joseph in Egypt,… and now the LORD your God The God who had preserved Israel in Egypt remained personally bound to them by His covenant. He had not forgotten the promises made to their fathers or abandoned His people through their years of slavery and deliverance. Deu 7:13 He will love you and bless you and multiply you.… has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky. Israel’s growth into a vast people fulfilled God’s promise that Abraham’s descendants would be beyond counting. Their numbers testified to the LORD’s faithfulness and prepared them to enter the land promised to their fathers. Deu 1:10 The LORD your God has multiplied you, so that you are… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
