1 One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields, and His disciples began to pick the heads of grain, rub them in their hands, and eat them. On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing <i>them</i> in <i>their</i> hands. Now it happened that Jesus was passing through <i>some</i> grainfields on a Sabbath, and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating <i>them.</i> One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.
2 But some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath? But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
3 Jesus replied, Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; And Jesus, answering them, said, “Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
4 He entered the house of God, took the consecrated bread and gave it to his companions, and ate what is lawful only for the priests to eat. how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful <i>for anyone</i> to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?” He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”
5 Then Jesus declared, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
6 On another Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He would heal on the Sabbath. And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. Now the scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him closely <i>to see</i> if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find <i>a reason</i> to accuse Him. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.
8 But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and stand among us. So he got up and stood there. But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and come forward!” And he got up and came forward. But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.
9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it? And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy <i>it</i>? And Jesus said to them, “I ask you whether it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy <i>it?</i>” Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
10 And after looking around at all of them, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand. He did so, and it was restored. And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. And after looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did <i>so;</i> and his hand was restored. He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored.
11 But the scribes and Pharisees were filled with rage and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus. And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. But they themselves were filled with senseless rage, and <i>began</i> discussing together what they might do to Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
12 In those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and He spent the night in prayer to God. In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. Now it was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer with God. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you <i>from their company</i>, and shall reproach <i>you</i>, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For their fathers treated the prophets in the same way. Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward <i>is</i> great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. 25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will hunger. 29 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. And unto him that smiteth thee on the <i>one</i> cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not <i>to take thy</i> coat also. Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic from him either. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.
30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back. Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask <i>them</i> not again. Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand <i>it</i> back. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.
31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. Treat people the same way you want them to treat you. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 39 Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Now He also spoke a parable to them: “A person who is blind cannot guide <i>another</i> who is blind, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. A student is not above the teacher; but everyone, when he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to notice the beam in your own eye? Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
42 How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye, while you yourself fail to see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye. Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye. How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
43 No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit. “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
44 For each tree is known by its own fruit. Indeed, figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor grapes from brambles. for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For <i>people</i> do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.
45 The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil <i>person</i> out of the evil <i>treasure</i> brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills <i>his</i> heart. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
46 Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord, but not do what I say? “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? “Now why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
47 I will show you what he is like who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them: Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like.
48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the torrent crashed against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when there was a flood, the river burst against that house and <i>yet</i> it could not shake it, because it had been well built. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
49 But the one who hears My words and does not act on them is like a man who built his house on ground without a foundation. The torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it fell— and great was its destruction! But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. But the one who has heard and has not acted <i>accordingly</i> is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the river burst against it and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.” But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
