Joshua 11

Conquest of the Northern Cities

Now when Jabin king of Hazor heard about these things,

Jabin, likely a dynastic title of Hazor’s rulers, governed the leading Canaanite city in the north. Hazor was large, fortified, and influential, making its king a natural leader for resistance against Israel. Israel’s victories over the southern kings showed that the land’s city-states could not withstand Joshua’s army alone.

Jos 9:1 Now when news of this reached all the kings…
Jos 5:1 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan…
Jos 2:10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters…

he sent word to Jobab king of Madon;

Jabin called Jobab of Madon to join a defensive alliance. Canaan was divided among independent city-states, and their rulers often united when threatened by a stronger enemy.

Jos 10:3-5 Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent word…

to the kings of Shimron and Achshaph;

The kings of Shimron and Achshaph joined the northern coalition, reflecting the growing fear caused by Israel’s advance. Jabin sought to gather enough forces to stop Joshua before Israel could take control of northern Canaan.

to the kings of the north in the mountains,

Northern Canaanite rulers controlled fortified cities in the hill country, including the rugged uplands of Upper Galilee. Their elevated positions and difficult terrain provided natural defenses as they joined forces against Israel.

This region lay in the Jordan Valley south of the Sea of Galilee, encompassing productive land and important routes through central Canaan. Its inclusion shows that the alliance extended from the northern highlands into the valley below.

Naphoth-dor covered the coastal region around Dor, a Canaanite city with access to Mediterranean trade. The gathering of kings from this area reveals the breadth of the opposition assembled against Joshua and Israel.

along with a great number of horses and chariots.

The army possessed the strongest military resources available in Canaan, including chariots that gave major advantages in open battle. Israel faced a force far greater in equipment and numbers, making the coming victory a demonstration of God’s power rather than Israel’s military strength.

All these kings

The Canaanite rulers set aside their rivalries to oppose Israel’s advance. Their united resistance reveals the scale of the threat gathering against the people God was bringing into the land.

The chariots, the chief weapons of Canaanite armies, were to be destroyed. Their removal showed that the land was secured by the LORD’s power and that Joshua was to carry out His command completely.

Joshua and his whole army

Joshua, whose name means “The Lord is salvation,” led Israel’s fighting men in united obedience to God’s command, foreshadowing Christ leading God’s people into the Promised Land. The army moved as one under the leadership God had established, prepared to take the land promised to Israel.

Jos 8:1 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid…

Israel struck before the coalition could fully organize its strength. The unexpected assault prevented the Canaanite kings from gaining the advantage they expected from their numbers, horses, and chariots.

Jos 10:9 After marching all night from Gilgal,…
Jdg 7:19-22 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts…

and attacked them,

The battle marked the collapse of the northern alliance and advanced Israel’s conquest of Canaan. God gave victory through Joshua as He had promised, showing that the strength of Israel’s enemies could not overturn His purpose.

Jos 10:10 And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel,…
1Sa 7:10 As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel,…

and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel,

Israel’s victory came by God’s direct action, fulfilling His promise to give the land to His people. Though Israel fought under Joshua’s command, the defeat of the northern coalition showed that Canaan’s strength, numbers, and fortified cities could not withstand the Lord.

who struck them down and pursued them

Joshua’s army pressed the defeated enemy without allowing the coalition to regroup. Israel carried out the command to take the land and remove the forces opposing God’s purpose for Canaan.

1Sa 17:50-52 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling…

The pursuit reached toward the Phoenician coast, including the region of Sidon, one of the major cities north of Israel’s inheritance. Misrephoth-maim, possibly meaning “burning waters,” marked another northern point in the campaign, showing that the enemy was driven from the battlefield across a broad area.

and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh.

The pursuit also extended eastward into the Valley of Mizpeh, “watchtower,” below Mount Hermon. Israel’s victory covered the northern approaches to Canaan and broke the military power gathered against them.

Jdg 11:29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah,…
1Sa 7:5-6 Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah”…

They struck them down, leaving no survivors.

Joshua’s forces completely destroyed the opposing army in obedience to God’s judgment on the Canaanite nations. The victory prevented these enemies from remaining as a military threat or drawing Israel into their idolatry.

Deu 2:34 At that time we captured all his cities…
Deu 3:3 So the LORD our God also delivered Og king of Bashan…

Joshua treated them as the LORD had told him;

Joshua carried out God’s command without compromise, continuing the pattern of obedience required of Israel’s leader. The victory belonged to the LORD, and Joshua’s actions showed that Israel was to remain faithful to the terms of the covenant rather than adopt the practices or military confidence of the Canaanites.

Deu 20:16-17 However, in the cities of the nations that the LORD your God…

he hamstrung their horses

By disabling the horses, Joshua removed them from military use and prevented Israel from depending on cavalry for security. Horses and chariots represented the strength of the northern coalition, but God had promised victory apart from such advantages.

2Sa 8:4 David captured from him a thousand chariots,…
1Ch 18:4 David captured from him a thousand chariots,…
Deu 17:16 But the king must not acquire many horses for himself…

and burned up their chariots.

The destruction of the chariots ended their use as weapons and displayed God’s judgment on the defeated armies. Israel was not to preserve these instruments of war for its own power, but to trust the LORD who had delivered the land into their hands.

Joshua acted in continuity with Moses’ leadership and the commands God had given through him. His obedience established that Israel’s success came through following the LORD’s direction rather than through military strength alone.

As the LORD had commanded His servant Moses,

The conquest of Canaan proceeded according to God’s instructions given through Moses. God’s purpose for Israel did not change with Moses’ death; Joshua carried forward the same covenant mission under divine authority.

That is what Joshua did,

Joshua Takes the Whole Land

So Joshua took this entire region:

Joshua’s campaigns brought the major regions of Canaan under Israelite control, fulfilling the land God had promised to Israel. No city made peace with the Israelites

The Canaanite kings and cities united in resistance despite Israel’s victories and the clear evidence that the Lord was giving them the land. Their refusal to seek peace revealed hardened hearts and brought the judgment long pronounced upon their idolatry and wickedness.

Joshua’s campaign involved the defeat of the remaining Canaanite cities through sustained warfare. Israel’s victories fulfilled God’s promise to give the land to His people and carried out His judgment against the nations dwelling there.

No Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites;

The Anakim, descended from Anak, were feared for their great size and strength. Their defeat showed that even Canaan’s most intimidating warriors could not prevent Israel from receiving the land God had given them. Joshua’s conquest removed them from the central and southern regions occupied by Israel.
